And it started to sprout at the top then I put it in some moist dirt in a pot and watered it 2 times a week . The pot was left in a window for sun and the odd time I put it out on the deck on days it was insanely hot or raining

    People will pay good money for a maple sapling... but I got a big ol maple hanging over most of my yard and maple seedlings pop up anywhere there's a bit of bare dirt.
    Might try and get some deliberately going in pots and sell them on for a couple bucks, or even just give them away.
    Its a really nice tree, and there's just something very satisfying about seeing a tree get growing and establish itself.

    All you have to do to plant red maples is wait until April for the red maples to grow out of the ground after planting themself. Then transplant one of them into a pot.

    appreciate the video. I wanted to try planting a maple seed from my yard and without doing any research or knowing anything about it I grabbed one, took it out of the little helicopter sheath and stuck it in some soil in a pot. Watered it every day and about a week later I had a seedling. I even kept the pot in my basement without any natural light. It has now been about 3 weeks and I have a 4 inch tall seedling with a few sets of leaves. I moved the pot outside about a week ago.
    I didn't know that you only had to stratify the seeds that fell in the fall, so thank you.

I was confused and spit it out. the seed in the bite ( i dont eat the seeds btw i just hadnt noticed this one) had started to sprout inside the fruit. i cut the apple open and nearly all the seeds had already sprouted. I planted them and they lasted a long time but died of mildew.

    I’ve got one that landed perfectly in the centre of one of my empty planters. I’m currently living in Hell’s Buttcrack, Arizona, so I’m pretty happy that it fell in an area that gets indirect sunlight most of the day, direct sunlight very briefly, and shade all in variable amounts throughout the day and year.
    I decided to just let it be and give it water. We’ll see what happens, but if all goes well, I shall name it “Lucky” and it will be my friend-tree.

    Hi, so I have successfully grown a small tree from a seed and it's now approximately 70cm in height and thriving. As I'm planning to keep it in a pot on my balcony, I don't want it to grow super tall, but it hasn't yet developed branches, it's just one stick with leaves on it. Should I somehow prune it to ensure a "tree shape" in a slightly smaller form or will branches develop naturally over time? It's a rosewood tree, if that helps. I want it to grow a max height of 2m, so it stays manageable on a balcony.

    Hey man, awesome tutorial! If you plant it in container in the summer, and you need to plant it outside in the spring, do you need to change container in the bigger one because of the roots? One more thing, how long do you keep bottom of the bottle on the seed? Do you wait to sprouts and then remove it?

    • @DIYHomeandGarden
      @DIYHomeandGarden  7 років тому +4

      Depends on how big the container that you started your seed in was. If it is about 1 gallon in size, you do not need to repot it if you are planning on transplanting the following spring. Yes, you should wait until it sprouts and then remove the bottle. Best of luck!

    I appreciate your effort to present such a helpful video. If you kindly enlighten me a little more with the process in tropical region. I am from Bangladesh. I have already collected Red maple seeds here in Bangladesh and feeling thrilled to grow them from seeds. The weather is quite different from your region, you know. We have a short duration of winter having temperature between 66 degree F (19 degree C) to 84 degree F (29 degree C) on an average. Otherwise, it is summer, spring or rainy season. In that matter, it seems that Maple should grow better here. Like, now it is rainy season with at least one spell of rain every day amounting 15 mm. All through these summer, spring or rainy season mean temperature varies from 75 degree F(24 degree C) to 97 degree F(36 degree C). So, I like to know- 1)Do I need to go for stratification? 2) Any other deviation I need to follow from the process you presented. Thanks and heartfelt gratitude in advance.

    • @Fas7Blas7
      @Fas7Blas7 Рік тому

      Do not water it daily! Also most maples do not like full sun exposure, they like partial shade, especially if its a baby it can die from prolonged sun exposure! I hope you got the plant fixed :P Also if you have the bottle or some sort of cover on it the moisture remains in it, that way you can water it once a week at the beginning.

      Acer macrophyllum (big leaf maple or Oregon maple) a tall broadly columnar tree from western North America found along stream banks and in moist woods. It can grow up to 80 ft. (24m)with 5 lobed dark green glossy leaves 10 inches(25cm) long and 12in (30 cm) across on long stalks. Turns bright orange in autumn. We had these wonderful maples growing on our property on Vancouver Island north of Courtenay.My dad used the wood to make some of our furniture with. We also picked some of the early spring swollen leaf buds before they opened to eat after steaming them and adding butter and a dash of salt and pepper. They grow in zones 6-8. Let me know if you have any questions about these trees or any other trees. I love all trees and have grown many since I was 12yrs old . I am 69 yrs old. Be safe and happy planting!

      @@notsosobermama8850 Don't buy seeds they don't sprout. I'm trying to buy land so I'm looking for saplings or 1FT-ers.

    Is it applicable on Japanese maple...?

    • @nebraskabirdwatching9521

      No. They require stratification in order to germinate. In order for them to sprout, you need to Put the plastic snack bag with the Japanese Maple seeds, which are produced in the fall in the refrigerator to stratify for 60 to 120 days. not the freezer! The stratification process breaks down the seed coats and readies the seeds for germination. When you remove the seeds, you may see small roots growing from the tips, indicating that the seeds have begun to germinate. Sorry no one responded sooner!

    I grow many trees, except one's that a large. I would love to grow from seed, just don't know how long they would take to grow & if I would live long enough to see at least 1 or 2 reach some sort of height

      I live in Qc too, close to montreal and I don't have any problem growing maple trees from seeds.
