I have had succulents grow from leaves that have fallen on the floor, they really will grow if you leave them be. Once the mother leave completely dies off and breaks away, you’ll find the baby to find you baby with its own roots. Just plop that baby into a small pot with its own succulent soil mix, water, and place in a sunny window.
I almost always end up with leaf crisps and no new plant. When I finally had one survive I did a happy dance and acted like a proud new parent by sending pictures to half the people I know.
Ignoring them is really the best advice! When I first tried propagating succulents I did a whole fancy arrangement, covered them, spritzed them... All of them failed. Once I started just ignoring them and letting leaves fall, it's been so easy to propagate 🤣
Nature really knows what she's doing without our supervision sometimes. They just need healthy mix soil, water and sunlight and let them be grow on their own.
i had been trying for so so long to get a succulent to flower. well i had some various succulent trimmings in an open ziplock so the nubs could dry before planting totally forgot about them. been like 5 days, one of the succulent types in there now has 4 flower buds. what!?!?
I love how they make a teeny tiny lil version of themselves. I dropped some leaves behind my plant stand and didnt realize it. I had failed to proprogate for years.. now I know. Neglect makes them grow!
DESERT HACK! I tried just leaving my leaves on soil and ignoring them but they failed when I did that... My solution was to drape a sheet of saran wrap on an upright stick and make a little tent over the terra cotta plate and spray like 2x/week. I live in a pretty much zero humidity climate, it helps preserve moisture! Now almost all my leaves make babies, I have soo many lil beefs
Look into dryland farming. It's a method of utilizing as much mulch as possible to conserve as much water as possible. If done well, you never really have to water plants
I personally needed to water mine. Otherwise, they died or just never rooted or anything. but that's my own personal experience, and everyone's experience is different! I have heard a lot of people saying ignoring them is the best move, and if that works for you, then that is what you should do! but mine just dry out and die, or if they do hold onto life, they won't create more :') but if I water them a day or two after the dirt drys out, I'll get roots and babies SO damn quickly!! I got a tray with a bunch of sucks on it, and at first, I did ignore it, but like 3 months went by and not even a single root was growing on any of them. then i started watering them, and BAM in a matter of weeks a lot of them have finally rooted and started putting off babies!
I grow sedum at work, all the varieties, and they are like an in-between of succulents and grass... I mean, they're basically succulent grass. Point is, though, they are extremely prolific, or at least quick to take. They do better with the short droughts, and really, the dryness helps. Love the video!
Your voice and tone was very kind and personable/ welcoming. I don't know what succulents are but I am glad I watched. I wish you and others in pursuit of their goals a good tomorrow. Take care.
Yep I have like 20 of these growing in a take out container lol. Definitely forget about them otherwise you'll spiral thinking you're doing something wrong lol. Also don't water them after you pot them separately because they rot easily. Just let them grow bigger. Just spritz them once and leave lol.
Youd put this up at the perfect time for me as ive just started to propergate for the first time. I usually use cutting but im trying out the leaf propergation now 😊
Thank you for making me feel more confident with my plants... Especially my succulents & cactus... You reassure me that they will be okay... Don't TOTALLY ignore them... But, be assured that they'll be okay if I forget to water them for a bit... Appreciate the advice, always! Now, SHIMMY THAT SHOIL! LOL.
I agree, I have tried to propagate senicio and it didn't do anything for months... Until I gave up, didn't water it for weeks and weeks but forgot to throw it out. THEN the little thingies started throwing roots like the speed of light. Also, my best babies grow from leaves that broke off by accident compared to purposeful cut/broken off ones. Really interesting.
Did you ever have the babies grow really well but had no roots by the time the mother dried up and fell off? Mine has none and is no longer growing. Mother fell off 3 weeks ago and still not a single root! 😢. Not sure what to do... any ideas?
I have NEVER been able to get any succulent leaves to propagate.. ever. And I do *exactly* this, every single time I’ve tried.. which has been a lot. I honestly didn’t even know how they should look once they should propagate until seeing this video! Lol You just have a beautiful, green thumb, Krystal!!💕
I am currently trying to propagate succulents! I have several containers full of about 30 leaves. So far, I have one super tiny baby plant and one that is possibly a plant and possibly not, I can‘t quite tell yet. I sprayed some of the containers with water once but not all of them and now I am just ignoring them. They probably get enough moisture from the mother leaf. I‘m super excited where this will go and I can‘t wait for my little plants to grow so I can proudly show everyone I know my babies ☺️
I struggled too and found the best is to ignore them but placement is important. Try to find a spot in your house where the leaves will get a little morning sun and normal daylight. That’s the best way to success.
The LOAD off my mind you just gifted me with this information is LIFE CHANGING. I thought the mother leaves depleting life = failure. WOW…starting FRESH tomorrow! Thank you, Krystal! 🫶🏼
Thank you 😢 I love succulents and cacti so much. I'm notoriously bad at taking care of plants, and I always thought that was my issue but a lot of these yt shorts by gardeners like you have come out to debunk a lot of things and it's just really cathartic ♡
Man I have the same ones outside and they sprout like hell when I spritz them everyday . I guess every succulent is diff . These are actually the only succulents I can keep alive .
You give me hope! Actually, all the plants on my patio haven't been watered on purpose all winter. They are just fine. It's been a very wet winter in California.
I noticed spritz vs dripping water does better because the droplets are smaller and more easily absorbed by the tiny plants and their delicate little roots
"leave it alone, forget you have it" perfectly describes succulents generally lol. my flaming Katy started reproducing on its own so now I'll probably have to give it a bigger pot
In my experience, I find watering succulent leaves every 2-3 days helps them to grow much faster. 😄 Once they are outgrowing their place, I repot, and start watering them twice per week to acclimate, and eventually water only every other week, or as necessary. (once the leaves are looking a li'l too tender)
My question is??? Can you do a video on when you plant ya babies?😂 I've learned to leave the mother leaf on as long as possible. But I usually lose mine between thus stage and the next
I have several succulent propagations going and aside from a few duds, the majority have really taken and grown a lot! But it’s weird, I only had one where the main leaf shriveled up like the ones you show here, so I easily pinched it off- like with no force or damage, it was dead and gone and ready. And THAT growth has since died! It was in slightly different conditions, borrowing a lil pot space from a plant with room and similar needs, hadn’t actually grown as much as its outside fam, but mostly kept inside (although even the outside succulents are still in a north facing window/indirect light). Anyway, I have several lil pots & containers with my many succulent propagations on the outside windowsill, everything left at this point has taken, rooted and grown quite a bit, but the leaves they started from have not shriveled up at all like yours yet, they just seem like…part of the new plant lol. I have spray bottle watered them because they dry out SO MUCH outside (FL) although I also leave them dry bc they’re succulents… but maybe the watering has kept everything including the initial propagation leaf nice and plump? Idk they’re just fun.
So question, what do you do after that?? Do you plant the original leaf in soil with it, do you cut that off, how big does it need to get first…? 😭 I’ve killed so many, please help 🫠
How long does it generally take for them to start having roots/become a lil plant baby? because I have only one leaf and hope it'll grow but it's been a month and he's turning a little reddish Also love your videos, you are an amazing person :)
It took my problems that I'm doing right now about 3 weeks to get a tiny route a mat about 2 months right now and there's quite a few routes in there looking good. I haven't been able to grow a baby succulent yet just roots
I've been playing around with different ways to propagate succies. My favorite so far is using this boot shot glass filled with pebbles. leave it in the window with some sun and put a few drops of water in there. it stays nice and humid as the water evaporates upwards and encourages them to reach down real far with their roots. I've even been paying around with trying to see how long I can grow roots on one baby succy. its fun really!
Try putting them in a spot that receives a little morning sunlight and regular daylight throughout the day. I’ve struggled and tried so many variations but the best is to ignore them in a bright location. Maybe a window that you open a little during the day, but not a hot place. If it’s too hot, the leaves will simply shrivel up
Mine struggled until I kept up with almost daily watering under the grow light. The ones I leave in an outside pot in a semi shade spot are doing ok too.
How long should I neglect the babies to expect growth? I've never successfully done this before, but I think it was my own fault for constantly trying to mist them
Did nothing. Ignored them. Not even a spritz, nothing… Leaves are pointing in opposite direction today. So Obviously she lied and I’m heartbroken. How could my sweet plant crazy friend be a liar?! Ugh now I’m outraged! 🤬 😅 Love ya Girl!😅❤❤
Hey Krystal, I love your videos! You have inspired me to collect more bébés for my tiny bathroom window since they now all live past the 8 week mark! 😂 QUESTION: How long did it take to get from Jan 2023, to the first clip under the grow light and to "Today"?? Also, my condolences on the passing of your Significant Other 🤍 👑 Queen Krystal, please keep making content whenever you feel so inspired! I truly enjoy watching you, 😊💓 and learning from all you share!!! My living plants thank you too! (I have three varieties of Aloe Vera, Philodendron and a Ming Asparagus Fern)
Finally got a leaf to grow some roots 🙌 I left two succulent leaves in the same pot as my aloe vera plant and misted only the calloused part maybe once a week (where the roots grow) when it looked exceptionally dry. I took them from my mom's plant on July 4th, it is now July 27th and I just discovered roots coming from one leaf. The other looked like it was beginning to die/rot with no roots showing. You really do have to just leave them alone lol I have a south-facing window that receives bright indirect light.
I don’t even have to try an ignore them. I will forget I have them 😂. I have one plant that I forgot I had for almost about 2-3 months or longer and it’s still here I also have been keeping it alive for 5 years and it made a little baby too.
Ok, ok, I hope this works. I just got a beautiful succulent this weekend. Baby knocked it down and a whole side of leaves fell off (it's Monday). I hope there's hope.
you said it. when i cut my succulents i just throw all the leaves in a container, one spray, check in a month. boom, new plants. propagation is so helpful once you gain the confidence to start just chopping everything up.
Nope! I’m not that lucky! I keep failing and don’t know what to do anymore with the leaves! I’ve tried this and not even one leave sprouts! What to do, what to do! I love your videos!
I am the most miserable plant owner. My apartment gets no sunlight, and I am too broke to own lightspaces like others, but I wanna have succies do bad! What do I do? Any recommendations? On plants that don't need much sunlight? Also, love your videos! Trust me I binge watch your shorts all the time!
i bought a grow light stake from Amazon for $8.99 and crowd all my plants around it and girl it has worked so well my plants are thriving for under $10 🥹🥹🥹
Full spectrum LED bulbs work great as grow lights and can be put into any lamp, which is much cheaper than a whole grow light :) Also, haworthia are a great variety of succulent that don't require much light compared to other succs (though you still wanna keep them close to a window/grow light if possible). And as a rule of thumb, any plant that's more green/dark green will do better in low-light spaces than colorful/variegated ones, as they're more efficient at photosynthesis!
Some great low-light plants in my experience: ZZ plants, green heartleaf philodendron, mostly green aglaonemas, neon/jade/golden pothos, any green dracaena variety, scindapsus argyraeus (aka silver/satin pothos), & peace lilies. Hope this helps!
My rule of thumb (especially with succs) is the greener the plant, the less light it needs. This is because dispersing the light through other colors can help protect the plant from sun damage (can't really explain more than that, I was a bio kid and dropped out of physics). So, a red echiveria will likely need a lot of direct light to not stretch but a green aloe won't be able to handle that. Also try to avoid succs with a powder coat on top, thats another adaptation for high light. I'd say go for pothos or burro's tail. If you can get a growlight, try seeing if you can find an aloe "swordfish", they're a green succulent but their rough ridges can get beautifully red/ pink with enough light. Also try to avoid the blue-purple grow lights, I've had a lot of stretched succs from them 😭 Look for plants that people say can be kept in the bathroom, as well, since they usually do well in lower light (most people don't have huge, south-facing windows in their bathrooms 😂). This is really all over the place but I hope I could help at all ❤ also be sure to check toxicity if you have pets. Pothos are toxic to most pets, and lillies will k*ll cats 9 times out of 10.
I have had succulents grow from leaves that have fallen on the floor, they really will grow if you leave them be. Once the mother leave completely dies off and breaks away, you’ll find the baby to find you baby with its own roots. I propagated about 20 leaves in water (not touching it) and only 1 of them failed. I'm scared of just soil propagation now :D
you said it. when i cut my succulents i just throw all the leaves in a container, one spray, check in a month. boom, new plants. propagation is so helpful once you gain the confidence to start just chopping everything up.
What’s the next step after they root? Should they be buried under soil or still just left on top? When to water?
You’ve grown your succulents leaves, now what? #plantcare #succulent #propagation
This was helpful I’ve only had luck a few times
THANK YOUUU
Nope! I’m not that lucky! I keep failing and don’t know what to do anymore with the leaves! I’ve tried this and not even one leave sprouts! What to do, what to do! I love your videos!
How long does this generally take? I just started propagating some this week.
This is amazing
Learned this the hard way. Always struggled with it till I forgotten about it and returned with them growing new babies
I am the most miserable plant owner. My apartment gets no sunlight, and I am too broke to own lightspaces like others, but I wanna have succies do bad! What do I do? Any recommendations? On plants that don't need much sunlight? Also, love your videos! Trust me I binge watch your shorts all the time!
i bought a grow light stake from Amazon for $8.99 and crowd all my plants around it and girl it has worked so well my plants are thriving for under $10 🥹🥹🥹
@@frannypie. Omg, I really appreciate this! I don't think 10 dollars is much for me, I can manage that! Thank you so much for sharing your insights 🌼
Full spectrum LED bulbs work great as grow lights and can be put into any lamp, which is much cheaper than a whole grow light :)
Also, haworthia are a great variety of succulent that don't require much light compared to other succs (though you still wanna keep them close to a window/grow light if possible).
Also try to avoid the blue-purple grow lights, I've had a lot of stretched succs from them 😭
Look for plants that people say can be kept in the bathroom, as well, since they usually do well in lower light (most people don't have huge, south-facing windows in their bathrooms 😂).
This is really all over the place but I hope I could help at all ❤ also be sure to check toxicity if you have pets. Pothos are toxic to most pets, and lillies will k*ll cats 9 times out of 10.
