      If you grow from seed from a store it's not likely to ever make a lemon if it even produces fruit. Commercial lemons are grafted to root stock and the fruits seeds will reflect the root stock not the fruit. I did the same thing 7 year ago.

      @@Valentina-yo9ec The answer is yes. All Hass avocados came from one tree, and was grafted onto other avocado trees to bear the same fruit. Plants have hidden genetics too, just like animals. So your own seed could have been naturally weak/never bare fruit/bare tiny little avocados/basically could have any combination of avocado genes. The only way to 100% guarantee you get big fruit is to buy an already grafted hass(or other variety) avocado tree.
      Try doing multiple seeds if you try again, hopefully one will grow from there. Avocados are notorious for being difficult to grow due to needy conditions and fungus. I've had luck so far with my first and only attempt, but make no mistake. My avocado should be 3-4 feet by normal standards and it's only a foot tall. Best of luck to your avocado adventures!

    I had a tree in my garden in Arizona called a 'cocktail tree'. The tree had oranges, lemons and grapefruit all on the same tree. They take a grapefruit tree and graft on a lemon sapling and an orange sapling. The grafted on branches continue to produce their own particular fruit.

    When I was in 7th grade, I really wanted to grow my own lemon tree from seed. I went on to just place a few seeds on soil like you did. It took them a few weeks and I remember I got so excited when they sprouted. I took a really good care of them for a few years. I even bought a citrus fertilizer. After 9th grade, and before I went to culinary school, I became a little depressed and I lost all of my passion for everything. The plants sadly died. Now more than a decade later I've been thinking about growing lemons again. It's one of my favorite fruits. 🍋

Now, I have a “Starting Garden” on my windowsill with Venus flytraps, cacti, two mango seeds, forget-me-nots, daisys,and apple seeds, during quarantine I have taken a liking to it and learned a lot from this video. I, Nephi, having been born of goodly parents, therefore I was taught somewhat in all the learning of my father; and having seen many afflictions in the course of my days, nevertheless, having been highly favored of the Lord in all my days; yea, having had a great knowledge of the goodness and the mysteries of God, therefore I make a record of my proceedings in my days. Yea, I make a record in the language of my father, which consists of the learning of the Jews and the language of the Egyptians.
      And I know that the record which I make is true; and I make it with mine own hand; and I make it according to my knowledge". 1 Nephi 1-3
      Hello friends, I am a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. The verses above are the first three verses in The Book of Mormon. I know this probably isn't the most ideal place to talk about religion but I really do want you to know that God loves you. You may not love Him or care about Him at all, but He still will continue to love you. You are a beloved son or daughter of God. He knows you personally and He truly and deeply desires for your happiness. He loves everyone who has every lived on this earth, with a perfect equal love regardless of their race, gender, ethnicity, faith and values and beliefs. The Lord loves you more than you can think or comprehend. "He inviteth them all to come unto him and partake of his goodness; and he denieth none that come unto him, black and white, bond and free, male and female; and he remembereth the heathen; and all are alike unto God, both Jew and Gentile" 2 Nephi. He is our loving, caring Heavenly Father. We are literally His children and creations. When we were in the womb, he knew about us" Jerimiah 4:5. He knitted us and we were created in His image.
      I testify to you that you and I are not a mistake. He knows the very moment when we stand and when we sit. He is familiar with all our ways and knows us personally who we are. The hairs on our very head are numbered. God loved us so much, He sent His Only Begotten Son for us, that we may be able to return and dwell in the presence of God again. The Lord has not forgotten about us even when it feels like He has. He will never forsake us. When we are happy, He and His angels rejoice alongside us. When we are sad, He heals us and lifts us up from our trials. He has always been there for us. He has always been our loving, compassionate Heavenly Father and God. Will we always be His children and people?
      I testify to you that God lives and that Jesus is the Christ. Both love you exceedingly and rejoice when you are happy. They both love you so much. They love you with a love unfeigned. They will never ever stop doing good unto you. I know that The Book of Mormon is true. "And when ye shall receive these things, I would exhort you that ye would ask God, the Eternal Father, in the name of Christ, if these things are not true; and if ye shall ask with a sincere heart, with real intent, having faith in Christ, he will manifest the truth of it unto you, by the power of the Holy Ghost". Moroni 10:4 I promise and testify to you, that if you will read The Book of Mormon, ponder on its message and ask God if it is not true, you will come to know of its truthfulness, whether its true or not true.
      Remember my friends that God loves you with all his heart, might mind, soul and strength. He wants you to be happy. He knows what you are going through and dealing with right now. He desires for you to return back to Him. Unfortunately, He has been misrepresented and seen as a cruel and angry God who anticipates for us to slip and writes down every mistake we make waiting to punish us by those who do not know or know Him fully.
      My friends, God has stored many opportunities and blessings for you. He is incredibly eager and desires with all His heart to bless you abundantly. He wants you to live with Him again. He only wants the best for you and your well being. He wants to experience everlasting joy and indescribable happiness in this life and in the life to come. He wants you to partake of His goodness and come and follow Him. The Lord does not care how early or late you decide to come unto Him. I testify to you that if you have strayed and wondered off the path that there is hope in Jesus Christ, The Savior of the world. The Lord accepts those who come unto Him whether your early, late or just in time who desire to change. The Lord will accept you wholeheartedly and forgive you if you are willing to change. The Lord will welcome you and will always be ready to embrace you with open arms. The Lord will lift us up in our trials and use us to bless the lives of those around us if we are willing to change.
      If you desire to learn more, you are always welcome to visit comeuntochrist.org. There you will learn more about The Church of Jesus Christ and our core beliefs and values. If you have taken the time to read The Book of Mormon and this comment, thank you. It takes a huge leap of faith and a lot of courage to muster enough faith to read in the Book of Mormon and to believe in something in a personage that you may never see in this lifetime. Although we may not be able to see God and Jesus Christ in this life, I testify to you that they are real. They do truly exist. I promise you that if you will pray to know of their existence, you will come to know whether they exist or have been made up.
      You are my friends. The Lord loves you and is aware of you and despite all our weaknesses and shortcomings, he still loves us and will forgive us if we will humble ourselves before Him and diligently seek correction and do whatever is needed to repent.
      Remember that The Lord is always available to talk to through prayer 24/7. No question sounds too silly for Him. James wrote, "If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God, that giveth to all men liberally, and upbraideth not; and it shall be given him" James 1:5. If you must know whether or not something is true or evil and deceptive, you can always pray to God. He will help you know what the truth is and what is not the truth. He will never be too busy to talk to. He will give you strength you need to overcome and conquer your temptations and will give you the strength you need to endure through your trials and afflictions. Paul said that The Lord will not give you temptations that you cannot resist, but that in your temptations, He will provide a way for you to resist, overcome and conquer them. He will provide a way. He wants to bless you and reward you abundantly. The Lord knows you and will not forget you. You are loved. You are utterly amazing. You have incredible potential. You are not forgotten or ever will be forsaken. You are special. You are unique. You are one of a kind. You have been reserved for this time and The Lord needs you on His side.
      It simply would not be the same without you. That's just how much the Lord need you on His side.
      Thank you for your time.

    I am 75. Years ago (approximately 40) there was a “how to” that floated around and everyone tried it! You needed the following, a saucer, cotton balls, a shot glass and the seeds of a lemon. You dip the cotton balls in water, place on a saucer, place lemon seeds on top of the cotton ball and cover with an upside down shot glass. Then take the saucer and put it on top of the refrigerator and forget it.
    Of course with it up there, out of sight, it is easy to forget about! Weeks later I was cleaning off the refrigerator and lo and behold there was that darn shot glass! I pull it off the top and look and there were roots growing out one side and tiny shoots of green! I planted the seeds in a small pot of soil and stuck it in the window and darned if it didn’t grow! Of course you had to keep transplanting it to larger and larger pots but yes it did grow! As someone else mentioned, it will never produce lemons you can eat and I finally lost interest when I moved into a house that did not support indoor plants and I gave it away! It was a healthy three feet tall and bushy!
    But that gives you yet another method to try. I guess the reason they wanted you to leave it UN disturbed was so that it maintained that moisture to promote initial growth! Have fun!

    There things you need to know before growing a lemon tree from a seed:
    1) It most likely won't be the same lemon cultivar you get the seeds from. This is due to lemons don't breed true from seeds.
    2) There are gonna be 1-2 inches of thorn of the lemon tree. This is because thorns are a prevalent feature of young citrus plants. When they get older (many years), the thorns will shorten and eventually kinda disappear, but that's gonna be a long time. If you grow lemon trees from a cutting of already thornless tree, this can be prevented, this is because growing something asexually do not reset the "timer" unlike growing something from seed does.
    3) The fruit you get might not be palatable or even edible. You can get fruits with very thick rind with dry flesh. How to find that out? See the next point.
    4) It is gonna be 3-5 years for the tree to fruit if you grow it from seed. Thus, if the one you grew from seed is a lemon tree with terrible fruit, it's gonna take years before you find that out.
    5) There is something good about growing lemon trees from seed tho: Although very unlikely, it is possible that you can get a new edible cultivar in this way. That's actually how most of our domesticated fruit trees been through. Mutation from sexual reproduction (seeds) is essential to get something very different from the parental plants.
    6) Last but not least, it is a very fun thing to do, especially you had no prior experience working with seed like this.
    Hope you guys find this to be useful. Cheers.

      If you want a tree that will have the same caracteristics of that 800 years old one, you probably want to start it from a branch, since it essentially will grow into a tree with the exact same DNA. When you start a tree from seed it will always be in some way different than the tree where they came from since their DNA will be different much like a parent and a child.

      if it produces high quality lemons dont grow them from seeds.
      make a clone.
      all you need is to choose a branch, remove part of the bark, smear a bit of root growth hormone(optional but it helps) and attach a small bag of moist soil in the area where you cut the bark, and observe it for like 1-2 months, until it starts to grow its own roots. then carefully cut it off the tree and plant it, and you have an exact clone of your lemon tree.
      seeds have genetic variations, clones dont.

Luckily my Dad sent me down some lemons and mandarins from her trees before the new owners moved in so I’m hoping to try grow some trees from the seeds that I’ve harvested.
    I’m currently using the zip lock bag method with a slightly damn paper towel and stored in a warm dark area.. I’ll also borrow some of your methods and see what happens.

      Your right. It was from removing the shell. Seeds need the seed pod for nutrients. It helps give the plant energy to grow. When it has used up all the nutrients, the pod drops off. It's like little baby fish, that have a egg sac, at birth. It feeds them, until they can eat in their own. So that plant was deprived of nutrients, and the soil was not enough.

Anyway, we picked more than a dozen huge lemons last week (as long as the branches are over the fence, the local law says we are allowed to pick fruits from a neighbour’s tree), and after enjoying lemon meringue pies and lemon cakes and some lemon curd, it dawned on us that maybe we should try and grow our own tree from these delicious fruits so that we can have all the lemons that we could eat.

    When you see thorns like that, they're "suckers". Citrus trees are notorious for having suckers grow, especially when they're young. They're essentially a nutritional sucker for seedlings and trees. If you take off that stem, the tree will grow faster and healthier.

      @TechplantChannel  4 роки тому +25

      Interesting, thank you!

    • @MonotoneCreeper
      @MonotoneCreeper 4 роки тому +31

      'A nutritional sucker' aka another main stem for the plant, which will result in a bushier and more compact tree. If you're growing it as an indoor plant, it's actually better to encourage those, as it'll make the trunk thicker, and result in a wider canopy, instead of one leggy trunk with a few leaves on top.

    • @chanelprincess6061
      @chanelprincess6061 4 роки тому +17

      Also Suckers also come when the plant is in stress, such as for vitamin deficiency. etc. It is nature's way of trying to save the plant, when the main plant is in stress, a sicker will appear just in case the main plant does not make it, the sucker will continue to grow. Citrus plants are heavy feeders.Its signaling to give the plant nutrients.

    • @rafaelramos441
      @rafaelramos441 4 роки тому +6

      Thorns are present on vigorous growth low on the trunk as well as any other rapid growth. They are especially prevalent on immature, vegetative growth. As the tree matures the thorns on new growth are shorter, or absent, unless the cultivar is genetically disposed to thorniness. Suckers will eventually mature into productive branches, if their location doesn't interfere with the structural scaffolding of the tree. However, suckers growing below the graft union on a grafted tree are undesirable and need to be removed, as they will dominate and overtake the rest of the tree.

But cellar with a bit of light works better compared to a normal room in the winter, there its too warm. 2020 test:
    I had dry seeds from a store bought lemon that I soaked in tap water for a couple of days, fresh water each day. At planting I clipped/nipped a tiny opening of the outer shell with the side of my nail clippers. Planted in “tri” soil like the rest of my garden containers in a pot with holes in the bottom. Gave a good misting and covered with clear dome to help speed up the process.
    Although I started this “test” late in our short growing season and it has been a crappy growing season, both my lemon seeds have sprouted. I replaced clear dome with netting until my seedlings had two sets of true leaves as “something” (birds, squirrels) eats young seedlings. One is now 2 - 3” tall. Although I have no idea what I am doing, the test will continue as I bring them in over our long winter and hopefully continue their growth.
    I love testing in my vegetable garden. Covid summer gardening has been fabulous even if Mother Nature has been off. Hopeful that I can successfully do some Covid winter gardening. Stay safe everyone! 🌞🇨🇦

    You can make your own citrus friendly soil mix by combining 5 parts pine bark (like bark mulch or bark reptile substrate, 1 part perlite, and 1 part regular soil/coir/peat. It should be well draining (be able to dry out between waterings) as they don't like their roots to stay wet. I have a lime tree thriving in this mixture so it does work well.

It’s helpful to get the fruit juice off and sometimes rinsing your seeds with a hydrogen peroxide/water solution could be helpful. The pealed seed in the bag should’ve worked and in most cases will. Sometimes people have bad luck tho. But I personally love the bag method for germinating any seed. Loved the vid tho.

    I found a good way to help with peeling the husk off the seeds is to use a pair of nail clippers and just nip off the tip of the pointed end of the seed, this will usually leave an opening where something sharp can be inserted to start peeling back the shell.

    Planted around 50 lemon/orange seeds 18 months ago, and now have 6 very healthy trees and 6 slower growing trees that have survived the British weather in a greenhouse.
    I actually experienced having multiple polyembreotic seedlings which I initially separated out into different containers. It seems that these ones did quite well. Could be clones of the original?
    Really interested to see how they turn out. I'm planning to upload a video to show the updates.

    It's weird that the bag method rotted your seeds. When I tried it, I got a 100% germination rate and some seeds even grew leaves. Maybe you're using too much water and I found that they also have to be in a dark place or they rot.

    I know this comment is very long but it helps in the mistake conception
    So, I wanted to give my advice on your plastic bag...
    I have grown oranges before and now I have a tasty harvest!
    So what was my experience:
    I was lucky enough to not have any plastic bags when I decided to germinate my orange seeds so I took an opaque plastic container with a clear lid and then what I did was pretty much the same, I just took a paper towel and placed it on the base of the contanier and moisten it then I placed the seeds and covered the seeds with another paper towel and moisten it again and just placed the lid on and placed it in a cool and dry spot (with a little sunlight) and I think after a week the seeds had rooted! And well I left the seeds to grow in there for I think 2 months but definitely your seeds can take longer period of time to germinate so don't throw them away one of the seeds was so late it germinated 5 weeks later when I was about to throw it...
    And here are my tips to grow any Citrus fruit:
    1: Peel off the outer shell to fasten the germination process.
    2: Try to germinate them by the paper towel method in a plastic contanier as you know I had success with growing them like that.
    3: Wait until they have a little plant peeking out of the seed or from the bottom.
    4: (If the plant starts to grow from bottom) Always wait until the plant reaches the height of the seed.
    5: Never, place the rooted seed without creating a hole with your finger or something in the soil because the roots might BP get damaged if you force them to push through and they are not devolped yet.
    That's all I'm not saying that don't try the method shown in the video but consider this method too...

    For me the best method Ive tried is to peel the seed and just plant it, I put 4 seeds in one pot covered with a plastic bottle top to keep warm, put it by a sunny window, all germinated, this is in England by the way but one didnt make it, other three are growing nicely as I speak

    I will be updating this:
    Day 1: Planted 8 peeled seeds in seed raising mix. I have put some glad wrap over with some air holes. I water if there is any dryness on the surface.
    Day 12: 2 seeds have sprouted
    Day 13: 3rd seed sprouted
    Day 14: 2 more seeds sprouted (5 of 8), the first seed seems to have sprouted 2 seedlings (I know this as I planted each seed in different trays).
    Day 20: at this point there are 6 sprouts, a 7th one seems to be sprouting (I saw the seed on the surface thought it was dead, pulled it, there was a root so I put it back in).
