If you hold Z and R at the same time while charged up, your shot won't lock on to anything and you can aim much more precisely for splash damage and get much more bonus points for group kills this way.
@@bottomtiercollector I learned just a few months ago watching "Starfox 64 2k% By Kelpsey: Speedrun Sessions 2022 Minneapolis". Still can't believe I didn't know about it, given that I've had the game since I was a kid and it's in my top five favorites of all time.
Peppy was so wise when he said things like... "Use the boost to get through!" "Never give up! Trust your instincts!" and even "Use the brake!" because it seems like all of his profound wisdom was significant for getting these medals... ...but he also once said, "You're the best, Slip." which is arguable at best
I actually forgot how difficult Venom 2 was for the first at least 5 to 10 tries. Looking back on it is kind of funny. I remember actually pausing and going to ride my bike for awhile after getting so frustrated. I was 7 or 8 at the time. It was around 1998 if my memory serves me correctly. Good wholesome times.
Dude! I remember getting all the medals as a teen. I love this game. I just fired my copy up, they are all still there. There is only one medal on my Venom, but according to my hit high score it was on the Hard Route. I remember yelling at the TV when I would mess it up, start all over again on Venom and when I finally cleared it I was screaming for joy so much my parents came to see what was going on. :D
I didn't know what, or how the medals were. All I did was see how many enemies I could kill and keep my allies alive. I mastered that and dominated all enemies. Eventually, a couple of friends told me about how to get the medals 🏅 and a trick with detonating the bombs earlier by pressing B. That's when I came in and helped them get further in the game with ease. I already knew how to kill multiple enemies but the bomb trick helped me double my kills.
When I found out that holding both z and R, laser charge shots won’t lock on and shooting next to enemies having them get caught up in the blast, gives you +1 or more depending on amount of enemies, the medals became a piece of cake and always tried to double the amount of points needed for the medal to create an extra challenge
Star Fox was the first game where I felt the impact that I was actually killing my enemies. Surprised it wasn't rated T for teen with all those bosses screaming after you killed them
The ones that gave me the biggest problems was Venom 1 and Sector Z, but persistence is key. That's why you gotta love the balance of difficulty in Starfox 64. Awesome vid Jeff. 🤘🏻🤘🏻🔥🎮
The reason so many old boards are going to talk about aquas being so hard to medal is a mix between the insane lag on that mission and depending on the TV you were using back in the day it was so dark you could barely see the immediate area around the torpedo. I went over to a friend's house way back in the day to help him with this level. It was dark on my TV but it was flying blind on his.
Some good insight! Yes they do get dark, I could imagine some old tubes making it hard! At least holding the brake down with another finger makes it doable either way!
@plissken94th57 it was meant to be dark by design however because of the way old tvs worked how dark it was varied. So it was definitely far darker than intended for some people. Even with torpedoes and being in the basement with all the lights off we really couldn't see anything on his screen.
@@hadrian3689 thank you so much, it was a horrendous pain 😢 lol definitely wanted to quit and had to spread bunches of attempts over a few days. Sooo many retries and so much frustration lol
Aquas and solar were the two easiest. Just have the hyper laser and the torpedoes lock on to targets even after deploying them. Solar, they give more than enough rings to keep your health bar full, even shooting enemies and the rocks so it's a win win. Unless you're talking about zoness, which is easy because you use your bombs 💣. The boss provides you with an endless supply to restock by shooting those balls at you.
I just got fed up with them and started doing sharp turns. Eventually, I realized their flight patterns on the map and understood how they moved. Later on they became extremely simple. I guess that's why I Eventually dominated my friends.
@olah547 Yeah, I did too. But I played it so much that I got too good to the point that they became push overs and I was able to experiment more. I didn't really need to chase them off because I knew I'd get their number. The only thing I couldn't do was Dodge their shooting because they're marksman, especially when 2 or more gang up on you. So I have to take them down in that case, especially if I don't have hyper laser.
Aquas medal is a pain in the ass, for me it was harder than venom 2, so many ragequits, zoness was also quite difficult. Meteo warp was my favorite thing as a kid and it still is.
Love this list and as an avid Star Fox 64 player, I agree with a lot of it. The only one I would change would be Venom (Easy) at #1 and Sector Z at #2 solely because playing normally without charging your laser/aiming bombs in good spots will not be enough to even have a chance at achieving the the medal, to the extent my younger self thought it was impossible for years whereas I did manage to get the Sector Z medal without needing to master charging up the laser for better combos. I never got a medal on Venom (Easy) at all by playing casually in the many years I've played Star Fox 64 and never wanted to attempt it until recently where I just barely got 201 hits after 4 tries. Though I do completely understand why you'd think Sector Z is worse because Venom (Easy) isn't required for 100% and Sector Z has a degree of chance to it with your teammates (& Katt) getting in the way of ruining your chance for the medal by helping destroying the missiles on top of the limited enemy count.
that Area 6 medal was no joke. legitimately spamming while doing the “doesn’t matter! just fire!!!” at those monkey cruise ships at the end. barely made the *300* it asked for.
It's virtually mandatory to have hyper lasers for Area 6. And even then, it's as if you don't get enough time to destroy everything even with spamming the brakes, etc.
Great work as always dude! I think the hardest levels even without gunning for a medal were Zoness and Titania. Land master levels are very unforgiving lol.
It doesn't get any harder than Sector Z. And if you fail & redo the level, you lose any laser upgrades & have to use the weakest laser, which makes it even harder, on top of competing with your wingmen & Katt (unless you come in from Sector X's secret warp).
@@fidelis3310 hope you’ve been well, my dude! How’s the last 2 years been? I’ve done a handful of Top 10s since this one, any that you still want to see?
There a total of 30 medals in the entire game 15 on the normal difficulty and 15 on expert mode, and you even get bonuses for earning them, if you earn a medal on Venom in the main campaign then you unlock the Landmaster for use in multiplayer, if you earn all 15 medals in the main game you unlock expert mode and a soundboard that lets you listen to the game’s music tracks, if you earn a medal on Venom in expert mode you unlock the ability to play on foot in multiplayer, and finally, if you earn all 15 medals in expert mode (by extension that is all 30 medals in the game) then you will unlock a new title screen, I’d say anyone who has earned all 30 medals has truly mastered the game, and I’m one of those, and I don’t mean to brag but I’ve actually done that twice, but that’s another story
Nice work! It really just comes down to the amount of time, I guess. 30 medals is no laughing matter, although I made a joke of it at the end. Not as if it couldn't be done, but it was just time to move on after cramming in all of that star fox action into only a few days lol. As far as skill or effort concerns go, the Running & Gaming series is an example of how far I can go when my mind is put to it. I really did consider playing through Expert mode, but this was fine for now. I think you'd enjoy the most recent F-Zero video. That game on Master is NO JOKE!
Hey, awsome video i loved it! Fun fact tho avoid mashing, it shoots faster if you hold A a bit then release it just before the charge and press back, the arwing burst a few shot before charging and does shots are super fast. But a like those tricks in sector Z to let you friends in danger and I didn't knew about the Venom 1 medal ! And the fact that the ship broken down too after being hit. Pretty nice.
Tbh the hardest level IMO to medal on is Sector Z. You just don’t have that much time to focus on downing bogies. Aquas used to give me trouble when I was a newbie for sure. Macbeth and Titania as well(the latter still being tough on normal tbh). Every other level is getter medaled by default.
Another banger man 👍 Yeah I remember thinking that it was literally impossible to get the sector z medal. Took me and a friend many attempts over the course of multiple weekends to finally grind it out. If memory serves, I was ready to throw in the towel on medal collecting and he pushed for us to get them all.
Thank you, sir! Haha what a bad ass friend :) congratulations on getting it all done back then... you guys must’ve been hopping up and down once you finally got it!
@@MarMaxGaming hey man, you had me inspired to replay this and while I already own it, I actually decided to pick up the remake for 3DS. The updated graphics and 3D effect really lend themselves to this game. It’s awesome! I highly recommend you check it out at some point if you haven’t already :-)
@@megamob5834 that’s so awesome, man! While making this video, it kinda made me realize that a really great series would be comparing the 3DS to originals for OOT, Majora’s Mask, Star Fox, etc. although I’m sure that’s been done, but maybe not in the flip back & forth / side by side style that we’ve done before... to the same extent. Plus dang those are longer games! Good to hear from you :)
@@MarMaxGaming oh wow, yeah didn’t even think of that, but you’d for sure be the right guy for the job lol but yeah the Zelda games are a bit lengthy, would be quite the project
@@MarMaxGaming Yeah, I haven't even bothered doing Venom 1 medal, since the game counts the Venom medal once regardless of which path you take. If I'm ever down for an interesting new challenge maybe I'll give it a try.
@@Mongovi for sure! Very convenient that it isn’t required, it’s such a hard level to complete as it is! Even if you don’t go for the medal, that place is just hard to survive 😰😰
I got a tip to anyone who is having trouble getting a medal in Zoness. You want to be caught by the searchlights. More specifically one right before the tankers. This is because getting caught causes more enemies to spawn in the 'base', but searchlights then lose their bonus hits as well.
Interesting fact about Sector Y, at the beginning of the level if you shoot down the entire squadron of Triangle Fighters that appear after the 2nd Green Shogun Trooper, a secret, Blue Shogun Trooper will appear, it may only be worth one point but every little bit counts, a bomb is your best bet to destroy the squadron, but if you only have one bomb I recommend saving it for when the Grazan-Class Carrier spews out those 2 formations of Triangle Fighters side by side, also I think there are physically more enemies on the path above the blockade, however, I wouldn’t recommend going that way if Slippy’s low on health or you don’t have a lot of bombs, (I’d say you need at least 4), try the lower path it still has plenty of enemies and you don’t have to go as bomb-crazy but there is a lot of braking involved if you want to get enough points for the medal
I remember trying for some medals. In particular, I remember getting a pretty good run on Area 6 going. It looked like I was going to be on pace, but as I got closer and closer to the end I started to do the math in my head and realized I might be short. Sure enough, I reached the boss with 288 hits - so with the 11 from a clean boss fight I would end at 299, one short of the requirement. I was so annoyed that I'm pretty sure I set a speed record for the Starwolf fight on Venom, easily getting that medal instead.
Wow, thank you for being brave enough to open such a terrible wound. Sounds absolutely horrendous. Way to take it out on star wolf and his team, this was certainly the right thing to do! I had to restart the whole damn thing too when Venom 1 surprised me with the zero point bonus… so lame, you know that was intentional too. They got you used to a pattern, a rock solid pattern of +10… then not even 1 point for Andross?? Horrible. I hope you like some of the other vids too man, appreciate you watching!
If you're willing to put in the time and effort and your teammates are in good condition, Solar's medal can actually become the *easiest* in the game. Once you reach Vulcain, you can wait until it does its lava geyser attack to fire charged shots at it and get bonus points. Shooting down an arm is recommended so that it can't create lava waves after this, only ever attacking with rocks (that will always keep you healthy) and lava geysers. Of course, you should keep shooting enemies to reduce the point count for the medal, but taking this strategy into account guarantees 100 hits! I'd probably put Macbeth on place of it in the top, while otherwise keeping your choices the same.
Thanks for watching, bro! I agree that mega man rocks, nice username! I don’t think Solar could ever be the easiest medal under any circumstances haha, because some of these don’t require much less effort and skill.. but I understand that you’re saying there are tricks to make it more obtainable. Speaking of mega man, I actually have a bunch of those videos including the hardest robot masters (buster only, no upgrades or e tanks) and same thing with the hardest mavericks on the Super Nintendo without any upgrades or sub tanks. Thanks so much for the in depth comment and looking forward to what another fellow mega man fan thinks of those lists!
This game is such a blast to play, and knowing some tricks to the game really help with score! Like in Corneria my best score, non-expert, is 200 points or so. Then in Area 6 best score would be 400 points! Those charge shots and bombs are a real blessing if aimed correctly.
Hardest to medal: Meteo: needing to get the warp. That alone is frustrating as one missed gate and you have to restart. Sector Z. Having to get the kill shot yourself on all six missiles is part luck.
I played the absolute crap out of this game as a kid, and seeing someone else share in my trials and tribulations is such a neat perspective considering I never had internet growing up, so I had to figure all of this stuff out on my own and with no help or advice from anyone since I was the only person I knew who owned this game. So, gonna flex my veteran Starfox cred a little, I still remember when I first got every medal one summer back when I was in middle school. At the time I could access the internet whenever I went to the library, and I used that opportunity to research medal requirements, around two-thirds of which I'd already obtained and had already guessed the basic requirements. (Hit count and keeping your teammates alive.) The Sector Z medal was around the first time I ever had to strategize how to get 100% on a stage in one of my games, and I took notes and did math to figure out the little quirks of that mission's requirement. I also resolved NEVER to play that damn stage again after I finally got the medal. (It's one of the only stages that can be completely skipped regardless of the route you took to get there or the route you want to end on.) After that it was pretty breezy for me to get the rest of the medals, I remember I used to struggle somewhat on Sector Y and Katina, but I don't recall any other level giving me significant trouble once I was resolved to 100% this game. I'd also like to brag a little and say I DID get the medal on Venom 1 long before I got it on Venom 2. Don't remember what I did, lots of bombs and Danny DeVito said "so I started blasting!" I also remember using the medal requirements and my own notes on the upper limits of each area to plan a "high score route" which led to my personal best of 1566. (these days when I replay the game my scores list is so stuffed with huge numbers I don't even rank anymore.) Anyway, this was a fun trip down memory lane. My high score run has lots of flaws and missed points, so one day I'd love to set some kind of world record, or at least surpass 1,600.
Love that this video found another genuine big fan of star fox 64 and the quest to get all the medals! It was really cool finally experiencing Star Fox and it’s challenges even if I was late to do it. Super glad you enjoyed it!! Also nice high scores 🎉🤘
I actually took that Venom 1 medal challenge and succeeded, finishing the level with a total of 213 points, but let me tell you it wasn’t easy, you were right putting it up so high, a neat little controller trick that you’ll find pretty useful is if you hold down the L and R buttons (and use the Z button to stabilize your Arwing) you can actually cancel the lock on, this is actually what those talented players that rack up insane points do to get those crazy high scores, however in order to do this successfully, you need to hold the controller in a rather awkward position the whole time, you sorta gotta use your left index finger to hold down the L button and your left thumb to manipulate the control stick, and with your right hand you need to use your index finger to hold down the R button, your middle finger to hold down the Z button, and your thumb to hit the A, B, and C buttons, at least that’s how I did it, you can still do barrel rolls but good luck trying to do a summersault, (then again you don’t really need to do a summersault there that often or even at all, maybe just in that one area in the beginning with the laser upgrade above the gold ring, but that’s about it), though I do have to say this much, this challenge is not for noobs it is a professional stunt, do not attempt without adequate skill
I also took other Venom 1 challenges, such as making it to the end of the corridor in the temple you chase Golemech through and making it through the level on expert mode, both of which I’ve completed successfully, but the latter I just barely made it out alive
I didn’t know about canceling! That’s awesome and interesting, Shane! Would’ve been good to know for sure. I’m glad you got a lot of joy out of these Star Fox vids! So many games out there to enjoy, it’s nice to keep moving and collecting experiences!
Its just Z and R for charged unlocked shots. You dont need L. It would be really annoying if L was needed since hitting L on an n64 controller while using face buttons and analog stick is basically not happening.
I’m really surprised by your high Katina rank! It didn’t seem too bad at all, and the ship gives a lot of points for its 4 sections… aside from that, looks like your ranking is the same?
No doubt that Katt's extra competition in Sector Z is unwelcome but I'd like to add that her entrance cutscene is also annoying. It interrupts gameplay and you can lose points because of it. Taking the warp from Sector X both gets rid of that competition and gives you a bit more time due to lack of extra cutscene. I also hated the first missile cutscene but having only one cutscene is better than two, imo.
also// if you fail to medal // once you clear a stage you can sac a life to go back and replay the level, your wingmates get full life if im not mistaken... basic laser and i think you lose bombs// maybe you get 3? been too long i cant remember// makes solar much easier
Venom 1 by far is the hardest for me at least. After playing this game through at least once a weekend since 97 it's the only one I can't consistently medal.
It was definitely a super tough challenge!! I contemplated it, it’s just that Sector Z was such BS with having to find the satellite crap in order to have a chance, plus taking a while to reach after game overs.. it sucked!
It’s either Katina or Sector Z that gave me the most grief. Katina because of how hard it is to rank up some kills without taking down Cornerian fighters by mistake, and Sector Z because either targets are scarce or you have the Copperheads to worry about. EDIT: Oh, and your wingmates trying to destroy the Copperheads for you.
I can't remember which gave me the most trouble but I honestly didn't think getting 200 on Venom was possible without going the hard path. Now I want to play the game again to get it
On the levels you have to take out Wolf and his team, you can light them all up at the beginning, it's not that hard but you have to know where they're coming in from
Thought I left a comment here. Venom 1's medal is super easy if you pay attention and pick the correct paths In this case, the best one is right, left, left, right, you can get more HITS and easier if you know what you're doing, my record is 307
wanna know why most of the medals for me weren't difficult on 3ds. Score Attack! Practice, Practice, Practice. Practice, Practice, Practice. There are 3 medals that are hell for me on expert; Katina, Sector Z and I haven't even cleared either variation for Venom
Sector Z on expert is a nightmare, getting there with blue lasers is the worst part of it all. coming from sector X through the warp means you cant hit a SINGLE beam on that sadistic worm hole section (designed to break your wings), coming from the regular hard path isnt fun either, zoness also has multiple ways of breaking your wings.
Thanks man! I greatly appreciate that. I hope you find other videos you like too :) if you haven’t seen the beating & reviewing Star Fox vid, I recommend that!
To be honest I think Sector Z is the hardest, because if any other helpers in your team (even Katt) will most likely kill the missiles first. But I guess they are slightly easier in the PAL version (known as Lylat Wars outside Japan and the US) since it’s slower than NTSC. But everyone knows that.
I had to access sector Z from sector X through the portals just to get the metal on sector Z so this way Katt doesn’t intervene. And I’ve never gotten the metal on the easy route for Venom. I’ve always done it on the hard route.
Trying to get all the medals on Expert is even crazier. You will lose a wing after crashing into anything once and there goes your dual or hyper laser abilities until you MAYBE get a wing repaired and then reup the laser. Not too mention bombs are scarcer in expert and all enemies do more damage.
It’s a big double edged sword there because surviving is much harder but the enemy count is way easier since there are way more of them. Expert to me isn’t even bad UNTIL VENOM 1 - screw that place
Well you are a trooper to go through all that for medals. I just beat the true game boss and counted that as beating it. But there's so much more. Like finishing the Pokedex after beating the Elite 4. Or getting all the Stars in Mario 64. Not really worth much, but there for the completionists. for me, I say beating a game means getting the credits. But if there's an extra boss like in Astroboy Omega Factor, then going through the extra stuff to get the True final boss counts. If there's multiple modes I just do one of em as you don't gotta beat Bison with all the fighters to count as having beat Street Fighter 02. Like in Super Columns on Game Gear I count beating Flash Columns as beating it even if I didn't do the Story mode. If a game has a Good and Bad end, I say: If you beat the final boss and get the credits, then it counts. Like in Phantom 2040 with 20 endings and 15 of em are bad. You went all out fore this vid Olde Sporte. Nice Worke.
Hey man, thank you very much! I’m glad you enjoyed the extra coverage. I don’t typically consider myself an outright completionist if it’s something silly that just takes an outrageous about of time, like all of those little guys in BoTW... that’s cool, but wow that’s ridiculous. Sometimes we just go for the extra mile here, with the Marmax difference ;) like beating all those time trials in Super Punch Out or doing the second playthrough with Super Castlevania, if it adds to the video in a fun way!
It’s been a very long time since I played this game, and I used to grind for the medals as much as I could, but I don’t think I EVER got the medal for Sector Z
I didn't even know it was possible to medal on Venom 1. That should be number 1! Sadly I don't have the skill and time anymore to attempt it. I remember the order of difficulty being different on normal vs hard mode. Corneria was a pain to medal on Normal, but on hard there were more enemies and it was much easier. Sector Z was the hardest on Hard, but I don't remember having much issue with it on Normal mode. Macbeth was probably the most satisfying when you see the train blow up.
Thanks for watching and commenting, man! I thought it was “easier” in general to medal on Expert since there are more enemies… Venom 1 on expert is freaking HORRIBLE… you get shot at nonstop for minutes, it’s so damn cheap lol
you mashing right? I saw you do good laser times at the end of corneria where the boss drops the framerate, I mash there too, otherwise you need to be holding for 3 laser shots per 1/2 a press and getting a rhythm of triplets. IF you get a good rhythm, you can basically shoot a string of lasers like a rope of paintballs. Also, splash damage gets you 2 points, so if you can shoot a charged shot before locking on, hit near an enemy so they are defeated by the splash, not directly hit, they are worth 2. You can get a lot of extra points following these two tips and then you won't have to rely on braking nearly so much. You're pretty skilled though. This is a hard game to medal on all of the levels. My best runs always have full medals though going the the asteroid field warp, a few times it is smart to run the course through the hard route and then change the route on the course select instead back to the medium or easy level. Sick game. Consistently over 180 on Corneria is where the real juice is. NVM you likely know this I saw a few other moments where you have good rhythm and are shootin ropes.
I was gonna disagree with Venom 2, but then I remember how long it took me as a kid to beat and how I was literally the only one out of my friends that could consistently do it. I always found Meteo, Sector Z, Solar, Katina, and Titania to be the worst. Meteo obviously can be mitigated with the warp. I've never gotten a medal from Venom 1 though.
17:50 I'll be honest ALOT of people rage on this medal when... I don't see the main issue here! Sure the space junk is annoying but I got the medal here on my 1st try! And keep in mind I was on the 3DS remake having taken the warp in Sector X and helping my teammates!
I would definitely say it’s significantly easier on the 3DS then, because it’s nearly impossibly on the N64 and you straight up need to find those seemingly random nuggets of junk floating around. Play on the N64 for an apples to apples comparison
@@MarMaxGaming Funny that you say that because the 3DS version makes the junk easier to find and the 3DS remake even has a N64 mode that recreates the original challenge.
I never had issues with Sector Z even on Expert. Zoness was the last medal we got on Normal and Titana on Expert. However I've never gotten a medal on Venom 1; ever.
Sector Z was the last medal I got simply because my route didn’t take me here as often. But in my humble opinion Titania is the hardest and the one that took me the most attempts
Venom 2, if you stay on the north side of center map and skip their into... you can pull a U and they will be flying in formation above the map as they enter and can be shot before theyve even entered the field of play.... ive never shot all 4 down this way but 3 hits left on leon was my PB// [yes you can down 3 of them almost instantly] its a lil ridiculous
Even though it’s only Number 7 on the list, I think that Corneria is the hardest medal in the game. To this date, it’s the only stage that I don’t have a medal for.
Hey Megan! I totally hear where you’re coming from, because it seems impossible! Like, where are the point opportunities, am I right? If it’s your last medal, you need to do yourself a favor and watch a vid / guide on how to get it. You need to fly under the roads, tilt between the cracked building, through arches, etc until you get enough enemies to pop out for you! You can do this!!
@@MarMaxGaming yes, I have watched numerous guides, but I don’t know what it is, but I just can’t seem to get the hang of it. I actually did get a 146 once, but after that, I haven’t gotten a score nearly as good since. I do believe that I will get it some day, though.
@@HCN-002OldChannel you must be missing some pocket of enemies, or one of the tank guys on the ground that gives you +5… or depending on how you use your homing shots instead of just shooting them down. That’s very close. It comes down to if you are TRULY doing the exact same stuff as them in the video, to the point where if I was one your situation.. I’d get a vid up, watch, pause, watch pause, watch, pause… you can see what point counters they’re at through parts of the level too, so as long as you do the exact same stuff they do and do not miss anything, you’ve got this. That’s what it takes… I wouldn’t just keep trying it without knowing exactly what you need to do, that is madness. @@HCN-002OldChannel 👏🏼 👏🏼 👏🏼 🎉 you can do this! Im excited to hear about when you get it! :D
I fail to see how Zoness and Solar are so difficult. Everytime I run them, I always get medal earning points on the first try. My best with Zoness is 339 and my best with Solar is 142
Nice job! Those are above average scores for sure, something tells me you’re practiced at detonating your shots away from targets to clear them.. if those two are that easy, I’d have to imagine you don’t have problem with any of these challenges! These scores are challenging but no match for a practiced Star Fox ace 👍
@@Dark_Wolf0626 I think the claw grip changes everything for you on Aquas! That one only took me a couple tries… and for sure I used bombs on Solar, the guides I leaned on only cleared the 100 by a handful. So you’re killin it on those stages! Sector Z is annoying for so many reasons haha
I would only play the hard route and could clear it with all gold metals, I would sometimes go through the Astroid Field warp if I wanted to change it up
Thanks! Expert Mode is a bit different because most of them are easier to get the medals since there are way more enemies… but my gosh, Venom 1 on Expert is straight up hell! Hardest thing I’ve ever faced in this game by far.
I think I need to pull back and consider Corneria for a newer player. Maybe it is hard in that context. I play this game multiple times a week. I try to get 1 full run in a day and I never beat Corneria without the medal... Solar is a tricky planet for me, the medal for Meteor is a little tricky for me because of the warps you have to hit, and I'd say without a doubt Sector Z, Zoness, and Area 6 are the hardest levels for me to medal.
I appreciate your comment and you watching :) love to hear from such a dedicated player! One run a day??? Haha! That’s freaking awesome, dude! Yes, if you erased what you know about Corneria, you’d be shocked by all the times you’ll get to the end and be like… what did I even miss?? I did a full beating & reviewing vid on it, if you’re curious! It sounds like this is your favorite game, or are there some others?
@@MarMaxGaming my goat list is varied through time and platform, it's hard to really put any of these games as my true number 1: Super Mario 64, Donkey Kong Country, Star Fox 64, Assassin's Creed Revalations, Assassin's Creed Origins, Star Wars the Old Republic, and Medieval Total War 2... All games I have extreme fondness of and try to never go too long without playing these games.
It's been very a long time since I played. I'm pretty sure I got all the medals. The only one I didn't get was shared Venom easy/fake route. I think I give up and decided that that the hard/true route was the intended way to do it. I don't recall Sector Z being that brutal. But I think I avoided the route were Katt appears. I know the player can fly into the hanger of the Star Fox ship but I can't remember if that give some free bombs to help with Sector Z. Even if the player misses by few points, I think they can restart the entire mission. I wouldn't mind playing this game again.
Thanks for watching! Sector Z is some AIDS bc of your teammates stealing the missiles from you. You may have gotten fortunate on an early try, because they’re terrible. Plus you need to find all those space chunks… And yes, you can retry but it takes away a life, so if you run out of lives… adventure is starting over. Let me know how it goes when you replay it!
I have starfox 643d and I’m trying to get the medal on venom 1 and let me tell you. It’s impossible. I got 200 and that wasn’t enough, so I got 220 and that still wasn’t enough. And the weird thing is that on score attack it says you need to only get 180 hits but clearly that’s not it. I’m guessing venom 1 does not have a medal in 643D
Oh wow, so I just looked into this man and you’re not going to be happy 😂 there’s an FAQ from 10 years ago asking this same question. Saying they cleared 200 and nothing happened. Apparently there’s a just bit more opportunity on the 3DS, but even still - you’d have to play it on EXPERT in order to have enough enemies spawned to make it possible 😭 that sounds horrendous. Venom 1 on Expert is so annoying and hard, and cheap 🤣 at least on N64… it’s awful.
@@kingstonwvnerfer211 no problem, thanks for watching the video! :) There are 100 other videos on the channel, I hope you find something else you like too!
Appreciate you watching! For the medal, that’s super hard to believe because Corneria is NOT the easiest lol unless you just flew exactly where you needed to go on a whim, multiple times throughout the course. Not sure if you saw the whole vid, but those top few are insane! And I talked about the other 7 missions before announcing #1, they weren’t as hard as the ones in the top 10.
Im replaying SF64 for the first time since 2015ish. I used to play it once or twice a year. I'm having a really hard time getting the medals that I didnt already have. I just got aquas today. Missed by like 19 on Zoness... completely screwed Sector Z... Im having a really hard time getting even close to the scores I used to. I plan on putting a lot of time into it to get better again.
Corneria was the easiest for me the hardest are the ones you have to make sure your team is high and you have enough bombs. The hardest is making it through the map properly
I can't say I found any of the medals in this game all that hard - there is potential to fail on the dogfight stages of course, but I've gotten well over 1800 total score with a bit of practice
You should give the 3ds version a shot. I know it's not entirely the same, but the score attack mode is unforgiving. 190 on Corneria for gold, and that's not on expert mode. I'll have to dust off my N64 copy to compare!
Venom 2 is pretty easy to get a medal on 51 hits for each star wolf member (if fast) And you can get extra points for beating Andross in case you missed the 51 hits on one
@@JohnLivingstonII maybe if you’re a pro 😅 Venom 2 isn’t easy in general! Andross seems to reward 0 points, is there another way to earn them? The brain?
@@MarMaxGaming Venom 2 is #10 because it's the last level + if you get a game over, you have to start from square one. As long as you're fast enough to take down all members you should have 204 hits (aka medal + 4 points)
@@JohnLivingstonII ah yes great point about the brain. And I agree, I had to put it at least somewhere on the bottom bc the stage is outright challenging when you’re figuring out how to fight these significantly harder ships! I appreciate you watching & commenting!
If you hold Z and R at the same time while charged up, your shot won't lock on to anything and you can aim much more precisely for splash damage and get much more bonus points for group kills this way.
I learned this watching a speed runner at an event. I need to experiment with the meta of the game to help boost my high scores.
I've played this game hundreds of times every single year since 1997 and I never this until today.
@@cleotasberkley9048 I never this also
Lol I did that when I was 10
@@bottomtiercollector I learned just a few months ago watching "Starfox 64 2k% By Kelpsey: Speedrun Sessions 2022 Minneapolis". Still can't believe I didn't know about it, given that I've had the game since I was a kid and it's in my top five favorites of all time.
Peppy was so wise when he said things like... "Use the boost to get through!" "Never give up! Trust your instincts!" and even "Use the brake!" because it seems like all of his profound wisdom was significant for getting these medals...
...but he also once said, "You're the best, Slip." which is arguable at best
lmao arguable at best
it is funny though that you can do the opposite of what he says and it still works.
“Use bombs wisely” also helped me get a lot of the medals
How are you forgetting: "Do a barrel roll!"?
Come on, that's not being fair to Slippy. He did build all of the vehicles you use!
I never realised it was even possible to get 200 on Venom 1. Kudos to you for pulling that off.
Not only is it possible, but the world record goes for the bolse + venom 1 route over the area 6 + venom 2 route
@@matheusvasiliauskassoares4361 Damn. I guess you can farm hits on Bolse since I think the enemies continuously spawn?

Haha so true, it’s a cool cutscene! awesome profile pic! only recently played kirby's blockball. Wouldn’t have understood the reference before that!
I always beat the boss like that every time when I play either the original and 3DS remake
That’s an epic memory, man! Great work on that accomplishment while growing up… it’s really tough!
I'm pretty sure I sent off a letter to Nintendo talking about how pissed off I was at Sector Z.
Lol! Let ‘em have it, did ya 😂 it’s a dirty job... but somebody’s gotta do it! Appreciate you watching and commenting
Thank you, sir!! Glad these Star Fox vids were up your alley :) and nice work!
I also think that was done by design given that you’re in the deep ocean, I think the torpedos were meant to illuminate the level as well
@plissken94th57 it was meant to be dark by design however because of the way old tvs worked how dark it was varied. So it was definitely far darker than intended for some people. Even with torpedoes and being in the basement with all the lights off we really couldn't see anything on his screen.
For me, the 2 hardest medals were on sector Z and Katina. Great video! With aquas and solar as runner ups
Thanks, Adrian! Those are definitely challenges right there. A big relief to finally clear each one lol
@@MarMaxGaming no way! I can’t believe you did venom 1! Mad Props!
The boss provides you with an endless supply to restock by shooting those balls at you.
venom 2 was pretty easy for me, but that was largely because I spent a LOT of time on the multiplayer with my brothers.
I just got fed up with them and started doing sharp turns. Eventually, I realized their flight patterns on the map and understood how they moved. Later on they became extremely simple. I guess that's why I Eventually dominated my friends.
@@younglove3362well over time I figured out you turn much faster if you hold z going left is sharper same with r then going right is sharper.
@olah547
Yeah, I did too.
The warps are fascinating!
Congrats on getting the 300, Osai! Definitely hard to reach the bar without dying or losing a teammate!
It's virtually mandatory to have hyper lasers for Area 6. And even then, it's as if you don't get enough time to destroy everything even with spamming the brakes, etc.
@@nameless646it really is a pain! It’s constant holding the brake while spazzing on the shot for minutes 😂
That’s exactly my strategy to get a medal on Aquas, in fact I’m so used to that I can get a medal without even trying
This is a fantastic video, takes me back :D
Great work as always dude!
I think the hardest levels even without gunning for a medal were Zoness and Titania. Land master levels are very unforgiving lol.
I could see that! The claw grip really helps on those... if you haven’t tried it, I’d say go for that
It doesn't get any harder than Sector Z. And if you fail & redo the level, you lose any laser upgrades & have to use the weakest laser, which makes it even harder, on top of competing with your wingmen & Katt (unless you come in from Sector X's secret warp).
You can fuck up Star Wolf II really quick if you cut the level entrance, go straight and shot them off map leaving them at least at 50% each.
That’s seriously such a cool trick, I didn’t know about that until after putting out this vid. Super pro strat!

@@MarMaxGaming Thank you MarMax

But a like those tricks in sector Z to let you friends in danger and I didn't knew about the Venom 1 medal ! And the fact that the ship broken down too after being hit. Pretty nice.
Great video. I completely agree with Sector Z being the most annoying to medal.
Thanks so much! I appreciate you coming by to watch!
Here's a tip to make this easier, go to Sector Z from Sector X warp, that way you'll never encounter an immortal 4th thief.
Another banger man 👍
Yeah I remember thinking that it was literally impossible to get the sector z medal.

Venom 1 on expert is the dang worst, I’ve never been slaughtered so many times and so quickly by so many bullets!!
Excellent tip, I wish I knew to include that! No wonder it felt so tight haha. Good to know!
I meant it hasn’t failed me once, that was a typo, and for some reason I can’t edit or delete comments anymore
Too bad you can't replay any level like Goldeneye. These really make this challenge hard.
I don’t think Solar could ever be the easiest medal under any circumstances haha, because some of these don’t require much less effort and skill.. but I understand that you’re saying there are tricks to make it more obtainable. sector Z is pain
Takes me back.. SF64 was the first game i ever got 100% on, and could dominate any of my friends in multiplayer (first & last 🦊)
Just one point on some hard level like Sector Z will score a life for a retry when accumulated total ends in 99 before starting it
Love the Cosmo profile pic.. what a show!
if you want an interesting challenge, try to score gold medals in 3DS's Score Attack mode.
Sector Z is why I hate Falco he always shoots down my missiles god damn falco.
This game is such a blast to play, and knowing some tricks to the game really help with score! Like in Corneria my best score, non-expert, is 200 points or so. Then in Area 6 best score would be 400 points!
Those charge shots and bombs are a real blessing if aimed correctly.
Hold A and Z to charge your laser.
Hardest to medal:
Meteo: needing to get the warp. That alone is frustrating as one missed gate and you have to restart.
Sector Z. Having to get the kill shot yourself on all six missiles is part luck.
I lent my game to an older friend as a kid. Whem he gave the game back I had all the medals and the multiplayer vehicles unlocked. Lol
Haha wow what a beast
(these days when I replay the game my scores list is so stuffed with huge numbers I don't even rank anymore.)
Anyway, this was a fun trip down memory lane.

Oh yeah, that’s a damn shame for sure
wanna know why most of the medals for me weren't difficult on 3ds. Score Attack!
Practice, Practice, Practice.
Practice, Practice, Practice.
There are 3 medals that are hell for me on expert; Katina, Sector Z and I haven't even cleared either variation for Venom
This is gold
Do ya thing
Thank you, Devin! I appreciate you.. hope you enjoy others too. Welcome to MarMax 🎉 🎉
The is aeswsome. Great job👍👍
Makes sense to me! Lol thanks for the quick comment, enjoy the vid!
ahhh yes Sector Z. Def correct
Area 6 was the most difficult for me, and was the last medal I obtained.
It really is such a pain and it gets so deadly to survive out there! Congrats on sticking through and making it happen!
let me give you a bonus: You don't have the medal in titania unless you save Slippy
Haha, you save him by beating the level!
that level's a dick. i thought the medal was 200
I didn't even know it was possible to medal on Venom 1.
However I've never gotten a medal on Venom 1; ever.
sounds like you knew where the space junk was, and your teammates never stole your missile kills! Venom 1 is really tough!
Sector z on expert is a nightmare to get, it sucks to begin with, but getting there with blue lasers to make it viable is even harder,
Sector Z was the last medal I got simply because my route didn’t take me here as often. But in my humble opinion Titania is the hardest and the one that took me the most attempts
Sector Z and Venom 2
Agreed with venom. I found it way easier to get the medal on venom 2 than venom 1.
I didn't even know there were medals LOL
Cool new Kid Klown pic bro!
Titania is an insanely tough medal
Btw you can disable the charge shot's lock on if you hold down Z and R. Makes Corneria and Zoness especially a lot easier
And Venom 1, I’m sure! Appreciate the comment!
I actually never knew this.
@@nameless646 it’s a pro tip! Not common knowledge
Get your game plan, know the marks you need throughout the stage, and finally put corneria’s medal behind you!
@@MarMaxGaming okay, I think I’ll do that. Thanks for the encouragement!
@@HCN-002OldChannel 👏🏼 👏🏼 👏🏼 🎉 you can do this! Keep your eyes on if they’re using homing shots vs shooting things down (so you can get the +Hits), go where they’re exactly going, and remember to see their point counters so if you get behind, you can say wait… let me restart.
@@MarMaxGaming well not entirely, I can achieve 339 on Zoness, without Bombs. My main issues are Z, Aquas and Fortuna.
Bombs on Solar are OP
@@Dark_Wolf0626 I think the claw grip changes everything for you on Aquas! That one only took me a couple tries… and for sure I used bombs on Solar, the guides I leaned on only cleared the 100 by a handful. So you’re killin it on those stages! Sector Z is annoying for so many reasons haha
@@MarMaxGaming I pulled a medal on Z once, about 14 years ago. Around 109 best
Its cursed how my second real badge was venom 1 by accident
I would only play the hard route and could clear it with all gold metals, I would sometimes go through the Astroid Field warp if I wanted to change it up
Should have this for getting medals on “expert mode”
Venom #2 would be much higher
1518 score.
Great video though
Plus you need to find all those space chunks…
And yes, you can retry but it takes away a life, so if you run out of lives… adventure is starting over.
Let me know how it goes when you replay it!
Pro tip: Use a turbo controller. A turbo controller makes getting a lot of the medals in the game much easier.
To be fair, that sounds like a bit more of a “noob tip” ;) we try to do it for real, but yes whatever it takes to get the job done! Haha
My personal hardest is Titania's.
I understand, I’ve heard that a few times too! I appreciate you watching and commenting, S0laris!
The switch needs a new Star Fox game.... this game was a fav and I still play the 3ds version once in a while
I have starfox 643d and I’m trying to get the medal on venom 1 and let me tell you.
@@MarMaxGaming I don’t even know how to unlock expert on 643d. It was fun getting all those hits tho
@@kingstonwvnerfer211 you can find out on Google easily if you ever decide to!
Okay, thank you so much for the help
@@kingstonwvnerfer211 no problem, thanks for watching the video! :) There are 100 other videos on the channel, I hope you find something else you like too!
Sector Y was pretty easy for me, and Corneria was the easiest for me.
It can be really challenging for sure.. when in doubt, use that claw grip to help slow you down as you shoot everything possible. You got this, bro!
The easiest ones for me are Star Wolf ones so Fortuna/Fichina and Venom 2
The first two wolf levels are quite easy but Venom 2’s improved ships make it so much harder!
@@MarMaxGaming but that's not saying much🙃
@@epicgamingwithgeorge lol first were definitely easy, but I refuse to call Venom 2 easy, since it becomes a legit pain in the ass
...
How did I get Sector Z's medal before anyother medal with Katt...? 😬
Sounds like you went for the hardest one first! Pretty crazy
Venom 2 is pretty easy to get a medal on
51 hits for each star wolf member (if fast)
And you can get extra points for beating Andross in case you missed the 51 hits on one
@@JohnLivingstonII maybe if you’re a pro 😅 Venom 2 isn’t easy in general!
Andross seems to reward 0 points, is there another way to earn them? The brain?
@@MarMaxGaming in Venom 1, the robot duplicate doesn't reward any points, but Andross' brain does.
@@MarMaxGaming Venom 2 almost got to the honorable mentions
I HATED Aquas
