Here's Why You Should NEVER Buy A BMW M6 Or M5 *V10 Engine Failure*

I bought a 2007 BMW M6 powered by the mighty S85 V10 for $3,750. Only to find out immediately that my E63 would need rod bearings. The Car Ninja and I tackled it in record time and got the car back on the road. 66 Miles down the road the engine decided to stop running. Now this car will make its final trip to J&J Auto Wrecking to be dismantled for parts. Unless you find a perfect M5/M6 with well documented rod bearing changes I wouldn't recommend buying one.

The title is wrong. It should be: "Here's Why You Should NEVER Buy A BMW M6 Or M5 for $3,750"
do you have an m6 or m5?
I would buy it for that price each and every time!!!! he is foolish to give it away and mechanic who knows engine is bad, first thing starts it up and revs it.....give me a break. these guys have no clue how to deal with bad engine
@@martinkulik9466 broo that's what im saying!!! ive been looking at this m6 for 2 years and they're all 18-22k euros. HE got one for $3k and just needs to put in like.. what? $6k? and the car is totally sorted? that's a deal! he's got himself an m6 for $10k like what.... he could have totally restored it and sold it and got like $10k on it lol
@@qmarq he could have keep it for the channel. I couldn't watch it what they done to the car. he was driving it broken....mechanic without diagnostic first revs it....even though they both know engine is broken. they should immediately open up the valve cover at least and clean it up, check injectors, check that vanos and also other things even though I am not familiar with this engine. I have 335d e92 coupe, and I am terrible in technical stuff, but I researched and changed valve cover gasket and other things. my only problem I cannot raise the car, otherwise I would fix other problems too as I have not a good experience with mechanics...but this guy is a fool. bmw m6 will soon rise on prices too, such as all bmw m cars. also, if you search engines or even vanos and other parts you can buy them on ebay....not sure what is logic of this guy, but I couldn't watch how he was treating that bmw engine, so I don't know what was problem exactly, but again, YOU DONT DRIVE OR REV BROKEN ENGINE, but you get a recovery car first, always, especially v10 omg. yeah I can't watch this channel.
@@qmarq and btw I had some issues, but many faults on this car are very easy to fix, but servicemen misdiagnose it! for instance, mechanics wanted to change my turbo so many times, but only problem was split vacuum hose!!! then the boost hose was leaking. so it was few bucks fix. also, few days ago I was working on my engine and then it would not start, because guess what? I took out injectors, and there was vacuum in fuel system, but I run fuel bleeding procedure with BMW diagnostic software and it didnt help. then I run it again and then it worked, but when I was discussing it, I was told that my injectors are damaged, but they weren't....ok and lastly my car didnt want to start again, my INPA diagnostic said my glow plugs are all failed and guess what? the grounding cable was just loose and I figured this by googling my problem on internet!!!! but if I go to the service I would pay thousands!!! lastly. his mechanic doesnt even have bmw diagnostic system that all of the guys are using and they are either INPA or ISTA or for old cars even DIS v57, which all have various tests etc....morale of the story is, these cars are usually less broken that your serviceman tells you, but not always of course, but mostly yes
This is me drawing BMW Vanos....... First draw a wallet, second draw a vacuum cleaner.... That's how it works

What a shame. I was hoping to see this car restored to its former glory, but that’s pretty impossible on a mid 2000s BMW. Stick to Mercedes 😂

I have my e60 m5 and I'm at 181k now and love the thing did bearings at 128k and its been great. I honestly think the s85 was more so designed around being pushed and I think the damage is caused by short drives and being revved hard when cold.
Please drive it forever
The intro was hilarious. Getting towed by Primary Josh
My old boss had the m5 version had so many issues with the vanos system. Before it even got enough miles to grenade the engine, from the bearings. It got lemon lawed. He dodged a bullet.
He got lucky. Glad BMW had to buy this pile of junk back. These cars are only good while on a lease.
Title should be “never buy an M car for less then $4k, chances are it’s a piece of shit”. $20k and up is what m6’s in good condition sell for. Never get one off an independent seller or anywhere else other then a dealership, unless they have service records and very low mileage, and this engine was already failing since his first video on it for all the people with low IQ.

If JR listened to Scotty he would have bought a 1994 Toyota Celica and keep it for 50 years. It would still have it's original engine, transmission, power steering pump, and AC compressor.

Like i said before you have to use ISTA on the S85 , the autel scanners will not tell you the correct codes , also with him using the factory bolts and bearings the risk is high for error , ARP bolts and ACL bearings are a fool proof setup

Watch it just be a crank position sensor 🤣🤣 causing the stalling and no start issue. Vanos is another issue good move getting out before you got upside down in it!

@@james_chatman I know I will get burned for this but Mercedes is the only one that makes decent engines in Germany. I have owned a number of BMW's, Audis, WVs and Mercedes over the years and only had luck with the Mercedes.
I think their engineers and executives should have to watch youtube videos of their $100,000+ cars going off to the scrapyards every day. To make it worse they should have to drink American beer as they watch.
People who buy BMWs new don't keep them long enough to experience these issues. BMW doesn't care about used cars.
A.J. Green You’re drinking the wrong American beer 😅
Honestly I’m upset that ppl think bmw are bad cars when there really not. To own a bmw you gotta make sure your on top of the maintenance and it will last you ive owner a few and maintained them well and they rewarded me with good reliability. With bmw you gotta pay to play if you can’t afford the maintenance then get a Toyota or Honda that simple those are cars that can take passed oil changes and all the abuse you can throw at them. German cars are not meant for abuse or to be maintained bad. So yea in short a car is as good as the owner who cars for them 🤷🏽♂️
The in-depth automotive knowledge of this man is awesome and also explains himself well.
Noooooo I’m so sad about this!! Was so hopeful to see this one running around town. What a bummer.
Perventative maintnance is key, my buddy has had his E60 M5 for 8 years now and recently bought an M6 V10
Biggest problem was BMW themselves telling their M car customers they can go 15K miles between oil changes 🙈 Madness !!! especially with that 10W60 Castrol engine oil 🤣 I wouldn’t do that with a Diesel let alone a high revving performance engine.
I changed the oil & filter in my M3 CSL every 3K to 5K miles 👍🏼 and at 92K miles when I sold it, it still had the original unopened engine with original bearings, head gasket, etc with perfect compression and good power. 💪🏼😎
I had a 335i and it was very reliable. I put 132k miles on it before trading it in for a brand new Volkswagen Golf as I needed a more practical and fuel efficient car. Only thing it needed was a water pump and blower motor.
Ive had my 06 E60 M5 for the last 5 years. Titles like this bug the fuck outta me.
5 years and at 70k miles on my E60 M5. Runs like a champ! Take care of the car and it will take care of you. You buy a neglected junky one and expect it to work normally? Lol.
Thing is, most Americans should buy BMW.
Sorry for your loss. I own the same car of 7 years. I think it boils down to how these cars are driven and maintained. I've had minimal issues. I don't drive it much and my mechanic is awesome.
Sorry to hear that JR, unfortunately I had a feeling that was going to happen at some point. The vanos had always been a problem on those. Like the wizard 🧙♂️ said previously when he fixed Tyler’s former M5 you really have to do the rod bearings, vanos pumps, the whole nine yards. But yeah I agree with you that in your case a new engine probably would have been more ideal. I’m happy to hear that you were able to break even, a lot of times that doesn’t happen as we’ve seen from many of Tyler’s past videos lol
Old Aston Martin Vanquish's had the F1 single clutch automated box as well
Audi had one and Mercedes did too iirc
Just throwing rod bearings in never lasts anyway.
Exactly. I was surprised they threw bearings in and expected it to be good.
I don't understand, wasn't there A LOT of metal in the oil? Shouldn't that have been a dead giveaway that the engine was trash and needed a full rebuild/replacement? What was the point ins spending so much time and parts to fix it?
@@JakeobE I was wondering the same thing, but I figured that must be normal for a car that smokes rod bearings like crack.
Anyhow... It was a swing and a miss. It happens.
Maxwelhse it doesnt, people just dont know how to drive it. theres an oil temp gauge built in, youre supposed to drive it normally under 3k rpm until the oil gets to temperature, not the coolant temperature. then after that, you can do some hard driving if you want. there are tons of these in europe without any of the rod bearing failures
@@mph5896 why? He half assess everything.

This isn't rocket science. But it was designed to compete with Super Cars. Bearings and SMG maintenance need to be done period. If you don't do those, you can't be surprised if it breaks.
As much as it pains me to say "I told you so" , I told you so. Bimmer used to make a wonderful drivers car. The more the technology increased and the engineers cheaped out with plastic parts the worse things got. Sad times for BMW.

My sympathies. I honestly thought this M6 could be saved. JR is probably right in never fix an engine with major problems. Car Wizard has mentioned GM AFM 5.3 are to avoid as they usually cost $4500 to fix. I learned that the hard way fixing my 07 after head gasket failure at 125000 miles. I paid to fix it. The garage that did it didn't do it right. They tried getting me to spend another $7000 on another engine after spending $5500 fixing my old engine that developed oil pressure out of range. I declined. With the help of a friend's hooptie salvage Oldsmobile 88, I was able to wait a couple months and finally contact an engine specialist who figured out my low oil pressure at idle. Bad valley cover the original garage never replaced. So $6000 on repairs, my money pit of a truck is still going. Best of luck on future projects. Ultimately you showed it does pay to have friends in the salvage business.
I say this from the bottom of my heart:

This is the second BMW engine that car ninja has been cursed by. This and the Alpina right?
@psidman only in US. In Europe people are fixing BMW :P
Three actually. Tyler had another 7 series that they also drove to J&J. It was the BMW that the Car Wizard refused to fix and ended up as the 1st video with the Car Ninja.
@psidman I've definitely learned when these BMW repairs fail, it's not Car Ninja's fault. Sometimes there just beyond saving before he touches them. Ultimately with every vehicle, can't know until you try.
I was thinking the same thing
Automotive yes but the owner cannot be impatient and have ants in his pants. It seems a BMW owner needs to be patient and methodical.

House of broken dreams.... i died
Thanks for the breakdown of the Vanos system. People complain about it, but don't explain why its an issue. I wonder what Honda or Mazda engineers think of BMW's solution for Variable timing.......
The S65 V8 in the E9x M3s, derived from the S85, uses the main engine oil pump to run the VANOS system. The S85 is the odd engine out, using a high-pressure secondary radial pump to provide oil to the VANOS system. I'm assuming the reason is it takes a lot of pressure to phase those four cams, with each covering five cylinders.
I've only really been into Automotive YT for a couple of years, but I'd like to think that at some point some staffer at BMW reports to their execs that "ya know, a lot of our cars show up on these YT channels and they're always either completely broken from the start, or still fail after well meaning people put insane amounts of work and money into them. This might affect our reputation with future potential buyers".
Sorry to say I saw this coming (after almost buying one myself, but running away once I read up on these monsters).
The Vanos and rod bearings are the nails in the coffin on these cars.
BMW made sure of that by jacking up the prices on vanos parts, especially the 4 little solenoids at the front of the motor, which originally were about $180 each, until Beemer jacked them up to $1900 each!
Just showing their faithful customers some of that BMW love.....

You came out even which is great sort of 😂😂 but with all the awesome content you came out on top!
If your going to buy either this or the M5 V10 I would not recommend buying a cheap example without full service history from Bmw , I researched and waited until the right M5 came along ( M5 late 2007 LCI model) 3 years later apart from spending only £620 on throttle actuators with better circuit boards nothing else has needed replacement it’s been a fantastic car to own and run very reliable indeed, I’ve had the oil sampled to check for wear and tear which came back perfect.. a point to make regarding pre LCI models is exactly what’s happened here but the main reason this has happened comes down to neglect ie; reving the engine when it’s cold .. this engine and gearbox needs to warmed up for about fifteen minutes or so and when purchasing the all important 1200 mile running in service needs to be seen in the service booklet , along with preventative maintenance and servicing by a mechanic that knows these cars ( I have mine serviced at Bmw which is similar to a specialist prices that’s why I continue with Bmw plus it keeps the all important paperwork in check if I ever sold it ) don’t get me wrong if any work is carried out like for instance the throttle actuators that needed replacing I have an M specialist that works on my car who is fantastic and considering Bmw wanted £3500 he fitted mine for £620 inclusive in an hour and a half while I waited and that was on a hot engine which I thought was amazing 😳 ... since this work was carried out it’s been faultless which was a massive relief 😅
These cars are becoming quite rare in the U.K. because of situations like this which is sad really but at the same time the good examples like my one are only going to go up in price over the years ... it’s a shame this happened to this guys car ( what do you expect for $3750 ) ... just don’t be put off by the scaremongers that sit in their chairs with their laptops spouting rubbish about these cars and how unreliable they are bearing in mind that 99.9% have never owned one 🥴😭😎👍🇬🇧
Forgot to mention I did have the oil cooler changed ( located under the front bumper) I think it was a stone chip but anyway it was £300 fitted so again not expensive..... I hope all this info helps and if anyone has more info on these cars please share as every bit of information helps towards owning one of these fantastic M cars .. there is a very knowledgeable bloke on UA-cam called M tech Guy ( I think that’s what he’s called ) who’s British and lives in New Zealand that owns an M5 and works on his car very good mechanic and also the Bmw doctor from the U.K. 👌

Well I called it: their is a road trip to J and J in JR’s future and the future is now. Maybe you can get a flatbed with twin turbos.
Sorry for your loss buddy, just ordered a HEADLIGHT pot and motor for my 98 Firebird Formula from JandJ in Ohio
Such a shame I’ve always loved those cars and always wanted one. The more I learn about the problems they have, the less likely it is I’ll ever buy one.
My Audi A4 was the same, always a problem. Glad I got rid of it.
Did it blow a head gasket like Scotty Kilmer says that A4's tend to do?
I also had an A4 (B8) that always had something wrong too. Car had some fucked electrics that Audi never managed to properly fix (two ECUs died, no idea why), and the last straw was a chunk of one of the pistons breaking off right by one end of the wrist pin, causing the piston ring to break as well. Didn't help that someone backed their truck into my fender too, I think that car was cursed. Sucks because it was well maintained, and it was only two years old. Got tired of shit breaking and sold it for a Lexus. The A4 was a nice car and I loved it but being in the shop 25%+ of the year is unacceptable for a daily driver
Currently working on my s85. I'll have pictures of all the work done to it. Rod bearings, Piston Rings, Clutch, Lower Vanos high pressure line, Idle cortrol valves, Throttle actuators (solder new updated mosfets and replaced gears) , fuel vent valves, repaired alternator, Bilstien struts and many more. She'll be new... But not for sell! lol But if the time comes, whomever will have it next, will have peice in mind.
ive been looking at this m6 for 2 years and they're all 18-22k euros. HE got one for $3k and just needs to put in like.. what? $6k? and the car is totally sorted? that's a deal! he's got himself an m6 for $10k like what.... he could have totally restored it and sold it and got like $10k on it lol
