You get excited, your going to survive the night.. you run over to the can to frantically open it to find ... string.. paper clips and sewing thread!
Hey, at least you can make a fishing line or snare trap with it, provided that wildlife is still alive it’s better than trying to hunt with your bare hands
Those matches are strike anywhere matches. The dipping in wax makes them harder to light however, as the wax acts as a lubricant and reduces the friction. Take the wax off the white tip with a fingernail and try striking by keeping the tip at a 90 degree angle to the rough striking surface (try using a rock without so many pits, sandstone works well)
Thank you! I couldn't believe he doesn't seem to know what waterproof matches are and how they work (or strike anywheres in general). I prayed that someone in the comments would know and make me feel better. Thanks!
That kit is like the magician's hat that he just keep pulling things out of it like it doesn't have a bottom. Maybe the 2 nails are to secure a clothes line? Could always put everything in the ziplock bag aftet opening up the can. As long as the wooden match has a white tip you should be able to strike it on anything dry and rough. It's a nice kit, thank you for sharing.
@Kind Man not for nothing, but hypothermia is a huge concern when in a survival situation, so yea dry clothes could mean life or death. i mean personally, those nails if anything would be great for hanging notes for your hunting buddies like he was saying or The nails could poke holes in the tin can and could be put in a fire with some natural fibrous materials to make char cloth, i mean the possibilities are endless really.
Problem with that technique is that you sometimes end up accidentally scraping the head off the match. At least it's happened more often for me that way compared to pressing my finger against it - the "wrong" way.
Same. I got some paper matches in a US MRE Kit and was using them like regular wooden matches and had to hold them at the very edge to keep them bending.
I love this review! I got one of these kits in my stocking about 12 years ago and have always tossed it in the bottom of my bag when hiking and backpacking "just in case". I've never opened it and the label has long ago worn off but the seal is still good. Nice to know what might be in there if I ever find myself in a dire situation! I'm pretty impressed by the amount of stuff they packed in there and how well thought out the choice of items appear. Nice!
When I was a kid we would fish with a small branch, a piece of line from grandpa's pole and a safety pin. We would catch sun fish in a small lake down the street. Always tossed the fish back in. Good memories for an old lady.
This guy is literally complaining about how bad the quality of these products like my guy no hate or nun but what do u expect from 12$? A supreme lighter with a Gucci compass?
Yes, like the video. A guy who has self striking match(Any survivors/campers favorite) that can be rubbed on a shoe, nail or even a teeth to light it up.. Then he fail badly at using them because he try to use them improperly by grinding it instead of using friction to light them up. and for 12$... What were you even expecting ??? Of course it's cheaply made! But who know, maybe you fan the dollar store and think 12$ is expensive.
Kasey D you are indeed correct but it’s still better than nothing you know .the quality doesn’t matter when your in a real event fighting for your life.i know I will use that 3 inch duck tape to stop a gushed wound from bleeding that’s some xtreme survival thinking 💭 all for 12$ it’s logic and quick thinking in a real situation then quality ;)
You otta take a day to make your own in an Altoids can for the fun of it. Could be a good way to talk about bare essentials and your personal recommendations on items and brands of various items.
I caught a 20lb. Mackerel with a safety pin when my nephew forgot to pack my hooks into my tackle box. Out in the wild I took a safety pin 🧷 that he had pinned to his top 👖 where a button had broke off and my sister had temporarily fashioned together. I Jerry-rigged the safety pin to my line and casted off & within a few minutes had a bite, unfortunately the safety pin 🧷 was lost & nephew wore his swim trunks home 😂
Estimates are fairly easy for shorter distances, but knowing length of shoe and length of arm from elbow to fingertip makes for fairly accurate gu-est-imates!
What type survival conditions are you preparing for?Forests, oceans, city, floods, nuclear wars,a broken down car or truck? A small water purifier would help you to clean containment water even drink your own urine and the chances are good i will have at least a pistol with some clips on me and some string and a lighter and some kind of knife and this is because some people have a issue with me bringing shotguns and assault rifles into a store or restaurant , banks or to work and is not something i normal tell them when working or going to the store.
Ughh in Asia you can buy the individual stuff (actually more) for pennies but I don’t think we can stack all those stuff in a tuna can though because It’s really hard like in SL a 50 was matches(only stem) cost a little less than 5cents. And fish hooks are cheap and a little quality. If you want safety pins you can get like a bunch of em for less than 30cents quality ones but low quality one for 10cents. Also thread is cheap if you really push you can buy thangus/nilone strings for really cheap too....

I particularly liked the end of the video, Cody. Maybe you could create a new video with a compact survival kit you've made yourself. Use an Altoids box or something similar that someone would have access to and fill it with what you feel someone should have in their pack should they find themselves in a survival situation.
I made a mini med kit with a fisherman's friend tin that i used to carry when I went to college it actually worked well for the small stuff you encounter day to day. It would be cool to see what someone with real experience could make.
That's what I was thinking. they could have had a few alcohol disinfecting wipes that also double as fire starters since they're also small and cheap to get in bulk. Oh well, you're better off making your own in an Altoids tin or something
bill R You know give those survival kits to some vegans and throw em onto an island and see how long they can survive I bet one of them will eat each other..
12:50 The sundial is simple to use, place it on a flat floor point the pointer to the south. put the nail in the middle of it. where the shade of the nail/stick goes shows the time of the day. Nice video by the way really enjoyed it :D [ As Vincrand reminded me it has to be pointed to the equator ]

Instead of trying to have one tin to do it all, I like to carry separate specialized tins in a vest. I have one for fire starting, one for first aid, one for fishing, ect. With a good hiking vest you can have everything you need to spend a day or two outdoors.
This little kit is actually pretty great for the price. I’ve definitely seen much worse out there. I do really wish the tin had an external lid, tho, so that you could close it back up after opening the thin metal seal.
Being something extra in a kit would make it a great emergency ration of items. I clicked to tear this thing apart, but it had more things than I expected and all useful.
we made fish hook out of safety pin one summer in Alaska when I was a child. we bent them in more of a hook shape. They worked. we did have some fish get off. However, we landed 4 for everyone that came off the hook. When your live 500 miles from a large town and 150 miles from any store you improvise a lot.
Its easy to catch a bug or worm to use as bait and you can use the ductape as bandaids using the razorblade. But one or two water purifikation tablets would be nice
to me this is a survival kit that is different from a first aid kit,, I am pretty sure they have that separate unless you pack one yourself and put it all together :) but that is a good point you made there Daniele and screw Suntorns comment ,, lol
Usually Coghlan products are rather gimmicky, aimed primarily at "car campers." But for the price, I think this a decent starter kit. I would upgrade some of the gear- get some small water purification tablets, folding razor blade knife, "stormproof" matches, a real (mini) signal mirror, small flashlight. And carry the contents in a waterproof pouch.
throw in a couple of condoms and you have lots of water carriers, and a folded up space blanket - my survival poncho mac fits into a wallet and I carry it in my work bag for emergencies

After the world ends and just a few of us survived, starving and close to the end; rummaging through a camping store looking for supplies you spot a can of sardines or tuna or something.
Thanks!

As long as the wooden match has a white tip you should be able to strike it on anything dry and rough. It's a nice kit, thank you for sharing.
yes its an emergency the most important thing is to be able to dry our washed clothes, i mean we cant hang them on a tree branch!

I was thinking the nail could be used with the sundial and compass to tell time.
@Kind Man not for nothing, but hypothermia is a huge concern when in a survival situation, so yea dry clothes could mean life or death. i mean personally, those nails if anything would be great for hanging notes for your hunting buddies like he was saying or The nails could poke holes in the tin can and could be put in a fire with some natural fibrous materials to make char cloth, i mean the possibilities are endless really.
.... I’ve been using paper matches wrong my whole life
Problem with that technique is that you sometimes end up accidentally scraping the head off the match. At least it's happened more often for me that way compared to pressing my finger against it - the "wrong" way.

Thanks for your input Phil. Let me know where I can buy them for pennies online in the United States.

Or put a mirror at the bottom of the can ??
I think if you stick the bottom of the can on the circle with one of the nails stick the reflective tape to bottom pole hole through that it’ll make the aim thing he was talking about.
It can get beat up and dulled after a while of being in a bag until needed.

But does it have the power of flex tape?
We both know nothing has the power of Flex Tape.
we made fish hook out of safety pin one summer in Alaska when I was a child. we bent them in more of a hook shape. They worked. we did have some fish get off.
