Really chill style, love it. I totally agree that thing I see people always struggle with is the idea of letting the tool do the work and just taking their time.
Great video. I have the MK1 blade attachment. To keep the knife horizontal I attach a levelling bubble from Amazon to the face of the knife and that keeps the knife level as I pass it over the belt. Very accurate.
It definitely would be simpler but like most measurement systems there are multiple ways to do it. Belts are measured on a micron scale. So and X65 is a 65 micron size abrasive. If you are interested in learning more we have a video on the subject! Check it out: ua-cam.com/video/PtXLn7WOtHc/v-deo.html
@@WorkSharpOutdoor Is there an equivalent chart to let you know what micron size is equivalent to which grit number. Also, do the belts have to be run in one direction only or can they be put on the machine either way, if so would there be any benefit in occasionally reversing belt direction?
Love the new MKII with one exception. I wish you could redesign the tool sharpener attachment plastic cover so it didn't interfere with changing belts. It's a bit harder to get the old belt off and the new belt on because the cover only provides a narrow channel. The cover really doesn't need to be as large as it is. I'm planning on cutting mine down.
@@kuramatd They ship with some belts but there's a pretty big gap between grit sizes so I ordered additional sizes for mine. Amazon had many available that filled the need and were inexpensive. Looking forward to checking it out this weekend
very very nice! I am a collector and user of knives and a collector of workshop. I am constantly amazed at how well made and versatile these machines are. I have a Jeff Park Kalbi (YEAH i miss used it) that I opened a door with. I sorta messed up the grind because of the very slight bend. But I think I can use these techniques to 'fix' it!
I just bought one, not even out of the box yet. All my life it’s been stones, ceramic rods, steel rods and it’s annoying as to some of the whacked edges you see on some blades. So I bought this to hopefully clean up the BS I encounter from time to time. Shears for cutting hair, you got vids on that?
i've been using the WSKO/BGA for years, there's not much it can't handle, like my riding mower blades. And the WSKO can do handle repairs or you can create a whole new handle for any size knife. I'd love to see more of your tips and hacks about different steels ..etc. Make some deep detailed KO Master Classes. You can teach Kyle how to sharpen his own damaged blades...lol...
Wouldn't you know, that I have had the version 1, or mark 1 of this tool for years, and we now have new and improved. Do the belts from the earlier version fit the mark 2? And are attachments interchangeable between the earlier version and the mark 2? I have several Ken Onion designed knives so I purchased the Ken Onion sharpener, but this mark 2 looks like it may have a feature or 2 worth having.
Do you only have to form a burr on one side, or should i sharpen til i feel a burr on one side, then sharpen the side till the burr forms/moves to the other side?
Bought one yesterday and watching the videos it seems I bought the mark 1 which is already retired by work sharp? Not real thrilled I bought a brand new product that’s “retired”. It works as it should but I would’ve gladly paid more for a current product
My Work Sharp, this one, and others I have seen all sound like they are about to fly apart at any given minute. lol Sounds clunky and not smooth. Always concerns me for longevity.
The difference is one will be sharp and the other one will NOT. Consistent angle is everything in blade sharpening. Your going to get a bunch of people turned off to this.
Thank you for your feedback! Ken’s point is to focus on consistency in holding the angle rather than worrying about a specific angle. Hope that helps clarify!
I just recently got the Work Sharp Ken Onion MK1 with the blade grinding attachment and I freaking love it. I've sharpened everything I own and have moved on to offering to sharpen knives for friends and family. I'm still learning and not the best at it, but I don't have to be to get the knives sharp, the tool really does make it easy. Not sure I'll have a need to get the MK2 one, but if my MK1 dies I'll be replacing it with the MK2. I assume they use the same sized belts?

Why the arbitrary belt grit names? Would much rather they just call them by the grit number as it’s familiar to many of us.

Because they made them and named them what they want. When you design something better you can name it what you want.
Thanks for the tips Ken! This system is all I ever use exclusively now. It's hands down the best available!
It really is!

We do too! The new cover is a safety regulation we had to adhere to when updating the attachment. It does get easier with practice!
@@WorkSharpOutdoorI sincerely appreciate the transparency and honesty. Thank you.
@@Armenian_Muscle I did cut mine down, and it made changing belts MUCH easier.
Can’t wait to get one. Thanks for the insight Ken and Worksharp.
Great video! Just got one for Christmas and looking forward to implementing your tips
Same here! I've been eyeing one for a long time and received one for Christmas today. I plan on having a sharpening session in the next couple days.

Got my mkii elite for Christmas, love it so far.

Love your machines , common sense video!
This is great. I have a Mk1 but limited experience with the BGA so far. I'm sure I'll pick up a Mk2 at some point but the skills are the same, thanks
I got the BGA and honestly I find it more intuitive and easier to use than the standard attachment, I only break out that one for scissors.

Should we wear a N-95 or something when sharpening to avoid breathing in the metal?
No. Masks are dangerous. They are only for people to wear in single occupancy vehicles. Set a fan up to blow the dust away from you.
Can you do a video on scissors?
I second this!
How to sharpen tools (including scissors) is coming soon! Spoiler alert, the scissor guide on the cassette is still the best way to sharpen scissors.
Do you guys minus a degree or two to make up for any belt slack?

omg, why do we even bother listening to looking at Anybody else ... this is it. Don't leave.
This guy has the name of a sharpening machine 😮
😂😂😂

You gotta be careful in Ken Onions kitchen. One little slip and you'll chop your leg off.

Same size belts, but you can't get the old leather strop belt on unless you remove the flat plate to make a wider channel for the leather belt.
