I've have the Ken Onion version with the larger tool grinder attachment for 1-2 years and have used it a lot. I've always used Gatco's diamond hones on my nice folders for a couple decades (always will) and the grinder on my fixed and kitchen blades.. there are two types of edges; smooth hair shaving highly polished edges and highly polished course grit edges. If I want an edge that'll shave hair, carve wood, or do "push cutting" well I'll step through the belts/hones from course down to fine then polish. But if I want a truly sharp knife, a real slicer with an edge that'll cut to-the-bone I start with a fairly new course belt for a few passes to embed deeper scratches, then switch to a semi-worn course belt for a pass or two, then switch to the polishing belt(s). Highly polished micro serrations crated by the deeper sratches left behind on the edge by the course belt is the key to a really great slicing edge that rips right through meat, hair, rope, and tomato skin (anything fiberous or resilient). The tradeoff is that the tips of the tiny serrations can chip away more easily, especially on harder more brittle chip-prone steels that hold an edge longer without the serrations. So study your steels, sharpen different ways, examine before/after your intended use with a 30x or higher magnifier and also drag the edge across your fingernail, lean it over on both sides, slide it backwards up your nail.. is it snagging and/or scraping, did the edge chip or just roll a little? If it chips polish back the serrations a bit more, maybe decrease the edge angle a little (ie from 25deg to 20deg), if it just rolled try only reducing the angle. A couple of my own tips on top of those in this video. Keep the speed low - the belts run dry and heat ruins heat-treating. Any and all burrs must be polished away without over-polishing those serrations away, its a very fine line. Dont confuse a feels-sharp-as-hell burr edge with true sharpness, its not. Burred metal might feel sharp, but its bent, fatigued, weak and waiting to fall off leaving a dull edge behind. Lots of polishing is too much of a good thing - if a edge shaves hair and pushes thru paper like crazy but feels smooth when you lightly run your finger down it and it oddly struggles with a tomato, rope or a skin callus .. its over polished, maybe even blunted. On the plus side, thats typically a durable edge that won't easily chip/roll, good for bushcraft wood processing, not great for skinning/dressing but tolerates some bone contact. Compromises.. are probably the most constant *and* irritating fact of life. Finding the best edge angle and type for each knife and its intended use is an art.
That was fantastic advice, I am in the process of getting into making knives and have researching some different types of blade sharpening techniques and machines. I am kinda torn between this system and the wicked edge.
Just bought my Work Sharp two days ago. Previously...I'd been able to get a decent hunting knife edge....but never could get a decent edge on a fillet knife. Well, after doing a bit or research, and a LOT of reading, I bought the Work Sharp. WOW!!! My fillet knives are now sharper than when they were new. I got carried away and sharpened every knife in the house too. (Wife very happy with newly sharpened kitchen knives.) Love the Work Sharp!
For years I was buying and trying a variety of the "latest and greatest" sharpeners but was never satisfied with the results vs the time and effort expended until I bought the standard Work Sharp tool. Even then I didn't pay enough attention (like I should have) to the instructions until I stumbled across your UA-cam video instructions a little over a year ago. Holy Cow, what a difference! I can now sharpen and re-sharpen our kitchen and my hunting knives in no time at all. I was so impressed with this tool that I just had to get the Ken Onion tool. That thing is incredible! Thanks for the very informative video. Only one thing I don’t understand clearly - do you put JB bore cleaning compound and brown polish compound into the old used 6000 belt? Do you use leather honing belt for the polish with the compound like JB Bore or Flitz?
i own one, and am a slaughterer by trade, the basic worksharp sharpener is great i use it mainly on hunting and kitchen knives but have used it on a few work colleagues knives and theyve been very happy with the out come.

I just sharpened my 32 year old Shrade LB7 Uncle Henry with this Worksharp and it is just as sharp as the day I bought it at the factory store in New York. What a difference that 6000 grit honing strip makes! Now I can shave with all my pocket knives.
Just wanting to know I just got a Ken Onion sharpener. There's a speed setting they call for is X what speed is X? Thank you if I can get a response on that it would be great.
Another tip, You can also use a mild degreaser such as purple power along with a magic eraser and clean the purple stropping belts back to almost brand new condition. After cleaning, rinse with warm water, allow belt to dry and it’s ready to be reused. It also works on the grey 12000 grit stropping belt in the blade grinding attachment belt kit. Try it, been doing it for years.
One thing I haven't seen commented on is that some knives such a Buck is factory sharpened to a convex edge at 13 to 16 degrees on each side. I had 4 Buck knives that I changed there profile to 25 degrees and they are very sharp. It took alittle while to raise a burr the first time so be aware. I love my Work Sharp. Great videos Doug.

Thank you for a great video. I have the KO knife and tool and love it. It saves a lot of time especially when you have several knives to sharpen. One of the first things you mentioned I think is the most important with this system is read the instructions carefully. From what I’ve seen failure to do this is the major reason for those that experience problems.
Very nice tutorial, we appreciate you very much. I have the original and had a rounding tip issue. But was running the motor continuously. This should solve that. Only question is I don't ever get a burr, although I'm using D2,154cm, S30V, ect. Run more times per side until a burr is formed? I should not move on until I have a burr, correct?
AssistanttoRM , actually I use my Dremel to sharpen my extream curve blades. you have to be very light and use a fine round sandpaper bit. fine !!!!! and go slow until you get used to it

I thought this thing was a gimmick till I bought it. Now I love it. I still prefer stones, but using this is quick, it works, and it's fun to use. Guess I'll be getting the KO version too. Good stuff.
I try to grind and sharpen as slow as possible. I never go below 220, and most of my work with the sharpener is to regrind severely damaged knives. I always finish and profile on wetstones
Hi Doug I've been following you for years and I was wondering I have the original Work Sharp and I have a cold steel folder with the Kris blade would I be able to sharpen it on the work Sharp?
Nice video and I'm glad you were honest about what this system is designed to sharpen and what it is not. There are lots of promises in the sharpening world about some system being the end all be all in sharpening and it's simply not true.
Doug, given the rotation of the belt in one direction, are there any issues with sharpening one side of the knife with the belt going towards the leading edge, and the other side against the leading edge? Possible issues with the blade geometry, or even snapping the belt? Great video!
Both you and the manual explains to turn the belt off when the tip gets to the center of the belt, yet you are pulling all the way through while the belt is on. Can you explain that?

highonimmi PreparedMind101 does a great vid on the comparison between the two. Check it out. He prefers the original for a variety of reasons, though he recognizes the Ken Onion as a nice tool. Most of his gripes are that the KO doesn't accept thicker blades, the guides don't stay put so you may end up with an imperfect edge, and a couple of others I don't remember right now.
Hi Doug, I have a KO Work Sharp and I really like it but I have a problem when I try to sharpen my Ontario USAF Pilot Survival Knife. I can't seem to get this blade to take a good edge and I think it may be because the knife has a very thick fuller that actually touches the angle guards and throws the angle measurement off. Any suggestions on how I can correct this problem? Thanks!

i bought a leatherstrop for the basic model is it worth it will it make my knife sharper

I've been blessed that I learned to sharpen by hand, actually have a knack for it.
I know how to sharpen anything, by hand. I still use my work sharp. Lol. It's nice to know how to do things by hand, buts it's very time consuming.

Can you use them for profiling a blade that you have forged, where the cutting part of the blade thin down to say 2mm thick?

LOVE mine.ALL of those arm type sharpen machines are slow.
I try to grind and sharpen as slow as possible. I never go below 220, and most of my work with the sharpener is to regrind severely damaged knives. I always finish and profile on wetstones

Nice video and I'm glad you were honest about what this system is designed to sharpen and what it is not. There are lots of promises in the sharpening world about some system being the end all be all in sharpening and it's simply not true.
I love this sharpener! The knives seemed to be sharp while I was learning how to use the WSKTS!
How long do the belts usually last.
Doug, given the rotation of the belt in one direction, are there any issues with sharpening one side of the knife with the belt going towards the leading edge, and the other side against the leading edge? Possible issues with the blade geometry, or even snapping the belt? Great video!
Can you show the names of the polishing materials you spoke but it was not clear to me.
Both you and the manual explains to turn the belt off when the tip gets to the center of the belt, yet you are pulling all the way through while the belt is on. Can you explain that?

i am trying to figure out which one to get...the basic or the ken onion....what does anyone suggest?
if you ave the money ken onion, if your a little strapped for cash the basic model.
highonimmi PreparedMind101 does a great vid on the comparison between the two. Check it out. He prefers the original for a variety of reasons, though he recognizes the Ken Onion as a nice tool. Most of his gripes are that the KO doesn't accept thicker blades, the guides don't stay put so you may end up with an imperfect edge, and a couple of others I don't remember right now.

Any advice on a knife with a curved blade
Hi Doug, I have a KO Work Sharp and I really like it but I have a problem when I try to sharpen my Ontario USAF Pilot Survival Knife. I can't seem to get this blade to take a good edge and I think it may be because the knife has a very thick fuller that actually touches the angle guards and throws the angle measurement off. Any suggestions on how I can correct this problem? Thanks!
Take off the angle guide and free hand it
