Nice comprehensive breakdown!
Good hell this video was great! Looking at buying my first 440i. So excited for mods!
This reminds me of the Big 16g setups foe our DSM’s back in the day. They were an awesome simple upgrade.
Keep up the great informative content!
Thanks, I was just starting to investigate what type I wanted and this narrowed it down fast ✌️
I have a stage 4 big boost and the waste gate is so worth it. Sounds like a 2j
Yep it's all about preference bro. They also have a blow off valve now that people are going nuts over.
Thank you for the information I really appreciate it. Keep up the good work. Love the channel.
You know your stuff. Thanks
Very good video, nice and informative, given me an idea on a few things B58 related, as I'm hoping to get an F31 340i in the next year or so
Now that the Spool top mount kit has been out for a while, do you recommend the Spool kit over the Doc Race kit?
Ordering for my 2019 Gen 1 B58 M240I tomorrow and i'm on the fence.
Planning on going with the Spool DI upgrades regardless. In my mind i'd rather keep everything from the same company.
What are your thoughts?
Thanks im going with the pure 800 soon
@@sikh7563 that’s very fortunate. Sorry to hear you had a bad experience with them. I was planning to go with pure 800s after a couple years
Great video, very informative! I wanted to get your opinion on the Vargas GC+ or Vargas turbos in general. Are they reliable? I've heard some mixed reviews about them.
The vargas gc has been proven but I can't recommend the gc+ until more people show results with it. Currently I'd recommend a pure800 or turbosystems stage 2 over the gc+
@@kern417 fair enough. I haven't heard or seen long term results either, that's why I was asking. I think it's best to just wait a little longer.
best mod for the street is drop in filter catback exhuast csf cooler and a decent tuned you pushing easily 450whp that should be more the enough for a daily machine.
The filter and catback so nothing for hp gains so not really needed. And plenty of people enjoy more than 450whp daily. A Downpipe and hpfp upgrade are the default mods to get the most out of a stock turbo tune.
Is a tune necessary with a hybrid turbo? I know it's ideal but can I get by without one?
Thanks for the video!
My bad I commented that before I watched it, just because I didn’t see it in description
Great video! I had a question about which set up would be best for retaining daily drivability, stock boost curve/torque curve, etc but maximising power delivery. From previous research is seems the Vargas GC might be the best in terms of stock boost characteristics with increased power. Would you agree? Thanks!
@@kern417 great thanks.
What are your thoughts on running an upgraded turbo without a tune? Particularly for the DME locked modern Bosch cars? Is piggyback enough or can the stock ecu compensate for the bigger boost? Thanks for your advice
@@scott4101 that's not going to be ideal at all. A piggy back can help but still leaves a lot on the table
@@kern417 figured as much. Best wait until the new DMEs have a better unlock and tune process I assume
Kern, love the channel. Is it possible to keep the stock downpipe with an aftermarket turbo? I want to run the quietest setup on 93 octane. Max horsepower isn't the goal here. I just wondered if there was another way to make more power after a stage 1 flash tune.
Very informative, thanks!
I'm considering the Pure 800. I'm currently running on the stock turbo with a upgraded intake and 200 cel downpipe. Makes 455 engine HP, (21 psi turbo pressure) but the fuel pump is still stock.
Do you recommend upgrading the fuel pump for this setup, or is it safe ?
@@kern417 even with the same ECU map? Or would it need a revised map for more power?
@@markvanderwardt3345 i should say it will *allow* more hp because you'll need a tune to take advantage of it
@@kern417 is the xdrive worth it over rwd because im seeing ppl hook up on big turbos rwd on the street
Hey @kern417 -- I know one of the reasons you like DOC is b/c they use the factory external w/g with the full aftermarket kit and you can run stock and OTS maps. Is that the case with the cold-side and hybrid upgrade options? Is the w/g the biggest issue when having to custom tune an upgraded turbo? Leaning P8 or GC+ but I want to maintain value for all of my FBO upgrades thus far and don't want to rely solely on a custom tune for DD situations.
Yes the hybrid turbos will have a similar response. As always you should love the car when you flash the tune just to make sure everything is working well. My latest video covers my feedback from running the Doc Race kit with an OTS map. Check it out
Awesome info👌
Great video. I am looking for a f30 340i. Should I get 6-speed or auto. Rwd or AWD?
I've watched 3 or more of your videos. I'm enjoying your content. I'm trying to learn up on the B58. I'd like my next vehicle to have one.
Are the Vargas turbos vetted enough now? I might be flying to Florida to pick up a F30 soon and already looking at that stage 1 GC turbo 😭😭😭 insanely cheap
Pure 800 vs turbosystems stage 2 turbo? Only on 98 octane (93). Daily driven
Dumb question do you got to buy 1 or 2 pure 800 turbos for the b58 cause I’m used to the twin turbo e9x platform
Is the vargas gc+ really boreing out the housing like you said? I thought that kit replaces both the intake and exhaust side...the pure turbo I can see what you said because you have to send them your original turbo to get it done. Sorry Im just trying to understand.
I have catless DP, intake, axle back exhaust. A carbahn stage 1 tune. Would I gain HP and TQ if I swapped the stock turbo out for the GC, without having to adjust the tune or anything else? I only have 91 octane available. Fuel system is stock. What should I do? I need more power! What about if I added meth INJ to my current setup without changing my tune? Just trying to get an idea of what I should do next to get more power for lower $.
@@kern417 did you see my edit about meth? Thanks for your reply man. What would you do in my situation? Ideally I’d like to gain another 50-100 WHP as the end result. Maybe be around 500 whp. Not sure if I should do a meth setup to help compensate for our 91 octane restriction? Or is a HPFP upgrade would be enough to get me to 500 WHP with just 91 octane ?
@@badass1g a custom tune can get you there easily. ditch carbahn and get BM3, MHD, or MG Flasher
@@kern417 awesome! Is there one of those you’d recomend over another? I was thinking about doing a combo including JB4+MHD, and then eother adding meth or a better HPHP on top of that? What would you do?
Nice video
@kern417 So basically it's down between the pure 800 and Big Boost. So my question is for you if you're wanting to make the 700 ish horsepower range with his little turbo lag as possible which one would you go with?
When he says hybrid turbo does he mean some OEM parts or does he mean an actually hybrid turbo like with an electric air compressor?
I have a 2019 X4 M40i and I am looking upgrade the turbo how do you feel about the GC+ a year later?
Great video! I run about 480 hp and 500 torque off the stock turbo with just an ecu tune, intake and exhaust.
Hi, planning to do bootmod3 stage 2 tune, downpipe 200 cell( some say its not good enough but i dont like the smell around the car)…also car is TU so already got HPFP…
My questions: is 200 cell downpipe good enough , and if i put pure turbo 800/850, does the car lose that fast response it now has? When i push it out of nowhere, the car now responses imediatelly…
Thanks in advance
Hi, you seem very knowledgeable, Im not sure but do you know the difference between the b58 in a 440i compared to the new supra or the m340i? I'm looking to get a 17 or 18 440i but is it worth it to wait to get a supra?
The biggest difference is the m340i/supra come with the bigger fuel pump that i swapped into my car. So they can support more power easily. The supra is also lighter, more aerodynamic, wider (fits wider tires), etc. All around it's a better performing car. The m340i will be more comfortable and more practical. So really it just depends on what your needs are.
@@kern417 Im looking to get a 440i but I heard that the b58 in the m340i/supra was better or built different but if its just the fuel pump then I think Im good to go
@@B58_TAYF the bottom end is the same but the cylinder head is different. the new 2021 supra will share the same b58 thats in the m340i now. the b58 in the f series cars have a 6 port exhaust manifold like in the new g20 m340i but the cylinder head design and whats inside is probally different and more efficient but i dont know for sure. the current 2020 supra shares the same engine, or at least the same cylinder head design as the non M g series vehicles with the b58 with the two port exhaust manifold so like the x5, 540i 840i im pretty sure.
I hava a 19 440i stock turbo and am pushing 500whp and 524lbt with bm3 E30 stage 2+Dorch Hpfp and methanol injection 💉 🤭🤭🤯
I plan on staying on a 93 custom tune but I haven’t seen anyone pass 500whp with pure 800 so I might go with gc turbo seen someone get 519whp on a custom 93 map no meth no ethanol what you think?
A pure800 will make more power on 93 than a vargas gc, so really it's up to you and your budget. Both are decent options
Hi...what's the difference between the pure800 turbo and the 800G.. for 2017 340i b58....? As posted on the web site...
Doesn’t anyone have an M240i? All comments are from 300 or 400 series owners. Assume the same upgrades would apply to my M240i??
Very nice video! I’m looking for 500 whp on 92 pump gas. Which kit would you go with? Prefer fast spool. Thank you!
@@lixiang7349 youll need to sacrifice spool to reach that high of hp. You can run a smaller turbo, but you'll need to add e85 or meth to reach 500whp
@@kern417 just watched this again. Seems like gc+ is a better option? Because it doesn’t ask for my old turbo to build upon? I want all new turbo. Confused again.
@@lixiang7349 personally I'm waiting for more people to use/test the gc+ before I recommend it to people. The pure800 is proven. But yes, on paper the gc+ is the better value.
Would this be the same on the new g20 m340i? Is the engine the exact same just more boost?
It is extremely similar, but it has lower compression so it should handle more boost and lower octane better. It also has better fueling from the start.
@@kern417 Wait, I thought the TU high power has the same compression as the gen 1, and the Supra engine has higher compression. Do you have the exact numbers?
@@Ultrabenbooyah the A90 supra (TU engine with 2-port head) has the same compression as gen 1 at 11:1. The A91 supra and M340i (TU engine with 6-port head) have lower compression at 10.2:1.
Whats the best if I want some extra power without too much additional turbo lag?
Vargas turbo hood ?
Better is Turbosystems or vargas gc+ or pure800 ?
From what I've seen so far, i recommend
1. Pure800
2. Turbosystems stage 2
I can't recommend vargas until i see more positive customer reviews

hi great video i have an m140 with the vargas gc installed . somebody know if i can use the gc with the gc+ exhaust turbo
how do you pass emissions? 🤔
depends on your state tbh. You need to know if your state actually puts a sniffer in the exhaust pipe, or do they just read the OBD2. I'm in NC and they only read OBD2 so you can put an O2 sensor offest on the catless DP to clear the code, OR you tune the code off. If your state uses a sniffer, you should stick with a hybrid setup.
Flow max or gc+??
Don't mount a turbo at the engine's head level, it will cook it.
Oil leaks, dried gaskets, etc guaranteed. Always mount it away from the top of the engine as far as possible.
@@DD-hj3sj I own one, but it doesn't pack turbos at the head level or inside the V like BMW and Mercedes have done previously causing major issues and finally a lawsuit against them for the heads getting cooked.
Do you know what rpm a g35-900 would come on boost?
depends on a lot of things but most start spooling around 2500-3000 and peak boost can be from 3500-4000
