This is a Motormouth couple car review of the 2021 Mazda CX-9 7-passenger SUV. The Mazda CX-9 is an SUV for moving people around but mazda does it differently than most by adding an almost premium interior plus a turbocharged 4-cylinder instead of a V6 engine. Powering the CX-9 mid-size utility is a 2.5L turbocharged 4-cylinder engine with a 6-speed automatic transmission with 250 horsepower and 320 lb-ft of torque. This engine can run on regular gas but the power drops to 227 hp and 310 lb-ft of torque. This 6 or 7-seater has a luxury feel with plenty of soft materials used throughout a quiet cabin. The Kuro trim we are testing has a Garnet Red leather trimmed interior with red stitching along with captains chairs. These chairs have sliding and reclining functions and are available one up from the base model for $300, although they come standard on this Kuro trim. Although this is not the biggest 7-seater in its class, the seats are comfortable and plush with plenty of room for a family. The CX-9 comes standard with a 7” touchscreen, black cloth heated front seats, 7 passenger seating, leather wrapped steering wheel and shifter, Apple Carplay and Android Auto and i-Activsense safety features. There is a lot of value just one up from the base model. It gets you the bigger 9” touchscreen, a power moonroof, leather trimmed upholstery, power rear liftgate, heated second row seats, one touch swtich for second row bench seat, available second row captains chairs with sliding and reclining function, heated steering wheel, keyless entry and paddle shifters. The GT trim, two up from the base model will get you ventilated front seats, front and rear parking sensors, a Bose sound system, wireless charger and wireless Apple Carplay.
You’ll find Nappa leather quilted seats with piping details on the Signature trim. One area I feel the CX-9 could see some improvement in is the Infotainment system. Although, I do like the centre console dial, the touchscreen is too far away from the driver. Keep in mind, this touchscreen can only be used when the car is not in motion. The new CX-30 Turbo, it no longer has a touchscreen. The US offers a 10.25” screen in this CX-9, you can only use the dial like in the CX-30 Turbo and I feel Canada needs this upgrade as well. Maybe next year we’ll see this change. the Mazda gets 11.6L/100km, 20 MPG city

We really enjoy our 2019 CX-9. Agree with you on the electronics. The gas mileage is underrated. We get 27/28 mpg on the hwy. One big miss for us was no memory mirrors. Overall, well built and reliable.

People. I just drove a sport and touring CX9. I don’t need the space, but this thing drives so much better than the CX5. It really is night and day difference, plus it looks premium inside more so than the 5. It’s planted. The feel is so smooth. You put down the 3rd row and presto, more storage. This is a better buy than the 5. A Grand Touring 5 with Premium Package is 35k. A CX9 Sport is 36K. It’s a no brainer. IMO

I really appreciate the effort that you guys take to do the ‘Night Life’ shots/edits. There are not enough nighttime pictures of car’s interiors. And its always great to see downtown Vancouver! I like this Mazda enough that I would short list it. The interior is paramount for me, as well as price (obviously). Thanks for another entertaining video review.

We did a lot of research and test drove a bunch of 3-row SUVs, and found the the '21 CX9 GT the best fit for us. We loved the quality of the materials, handling and gas mileage. We get 24+ in the city which is surprising for such a big AWD vehicle. I would have liked a 110 volt outlet like some of the other 3-row vehicles.

My wife and I just picked up a new '23 CX9 touring trim w/captains chairs & the sun roof. Managed like 5.1k off MSRP with it being an outgoing mode making room for the cx90.

A lot of brands make claims at being the best value for your dollar, but I think Mazda has recently taken that title with their upscaling of their interiors, sound systems, and driving dynamics. I think I would still rather have an Acura or Genesis (Lexus are too boring and dated interiors), but Mazda is doing a great job.

Mazda has really raised their game in the past few years. Mazda's have always been well built and "sporty", but now they are really moving into the "value luxury" segment, if that segment actually exists. The interiors are amazing, really nice places to sit and they have a real quality to them. I had a 2011 Mazda 3 and it was a great little car, super reliable as well. They need a full length sun roof and better infotainment system and that would make a great refresh. Seeing the CX-30, I can only wish for a future "CX-50" and a "CX-90". Great review as always!

  • @joebass5163

When shopping for a three row my criteria was reliability and fuel economy. The CX-9 hits both targets and the added quietness and smooth ride are bonuses. We did an eight hour roundtrip and what an enjoyable drive. Averaged about 26 mpg at 80 mph. We only need the third row occasionally. I looked at the Traverse but the transmission issues and random electrical problems plus the start stop systems was a deal breaker. Plus the safety systems aren't available on lower trim levels like the CX-9.

We are shopping for a midsize SUV and currently drive a 2018 MAZDA6 Signature. Absolutely love that car! We cross shopped the Highlander, Pilot and even the Acura RDX with the CX-9. All the models we are looking at are within $1,000 (US) of each other. My Mazda dealer is knocking it out of the park as far as discounting the OTD price when compared to the others. I think I may like the RDX slightly more but the price difference is around $3,000…and it is not that much nicer. So it looks like there will be another Mazda in our garage soon. BTW Zac and Andrea, I love your reviews. It does help that you are so easy on the eyes Andrea…and Zac…you are a lucky man! Keep up the great work you 2! I look forward to the next review!

We have had Mazdas for the past 16 years. So I understand why you like them, Andrea.
I am in the market for a seven seater, but I refuse to pay $5k over MSRP for a Telluride. So, in spite of the small screen and the lack of a panoramic sunroof, the CX9 is high on my list. It’s such a great looking SUV. However, I am hoping to find a 2019 with low mileage, as that was the last model year, at least in the US, that the Signature trim was available with a rear bench seat.

I have had no major issues and LOVE my 2020 CX-9, BUT one common issue I have personally experienced, and heard from the dealer is a common issue in 2016-present CX-9s, are the power-folding mirror motors. These tiny electric motors have a tendency to break, requiring complete replacement. It is a warranted part, but I imagine expensive out of warranty. The worst thing is the option to disable power folding mirrors is NOT user defeatable or a selectable option in the UI. Turning off power fold requires a secret key combo at startup only found in dealer manuals. Luckily it spread on message boards, but that is seriously uncool.

    Dear Motormouth Family,
This review more or less convinced the wife and I to buy a CX9. We already have a vantastic van, which we drive without shame. Since I have owned three sports cars. This CX9 kind of provides a Mid Life Crisis sports car-crossover without causing a marital crisis. I think. Plus the uniqueness, and quality, as you point out. Negatives would be that only 30,000 or so sell a year. So not a lot of parts. Or even dealers. But we’ll made. So we shall see. Even if the warranty is pretty feeble compared to Kia. So with all the negatives, including pretty tiny third row, this car has style, quality and fun for those with familial obligations to consider.
BTW , your web site name (Motormouth) suggests that y’all are one of those fast talking, hyper young presenters on You Tube. You are actually the opposite: very sensible, reasonable and understandable. So maybe some other moniker, such as “Good Car Advisers”( that’s actually pretty lame) , or something in the same vein , but more catchy. I almost avoided the channel, because of the name, but wanted to hear about the CX9. Have watched several other of your car reviews since, n like them all. I suppose one of the main reasons would be that you both are very knowledgeable re the vehicles, without being boring. Then you also have the family driver perspective. And the mom vs. dad perspective.

"...the CX-9 AWD system doesn't send power to the rear wheels quickly enough, which can result in torque steer if you need to accelerate away from a stop quickly."
" In dry conditions, the system is designed to minimize the amount of torque it sends to the rear wheels, which means during full-throttle acceleration, the CX-9 and its 310 lb-ft of torque will chirp the front tires and then proceed to torque-steer, leaving the driver to wrestle with the steering wheel. Considering the AWD control module is monitoring both the accelerator position and steering angle, I feel like the moment the accelerator pedal is depressed fully, power should be moved to the rear to mitigate the effects of all of that torque on the front wheels." The CX-9 "Isn't the biggest vehicle in this class" ? (5:55) That's technically true. In terms of length the 199.4" long CX-9 is shorter than the Dodge Durango and the Chevy Traverse. But it's longer than every other midsize SUV! (Contrary to the comments in the video, the CX-9 is LARGER than either the Telluride (196.9") or the Palisade (196.1".) But in terms of interior passenger and cargo space, it's DEFINITELY "not the biggest." Not only does the CX-9 rank dead last among all mainstream 3 row SUVs, it has less cargo and passenger space than the smallest midsize 3 row SUV (the KIA Sorento) a vehicle that's nearly a foot less in length than the CX-9. Even worse, it has less total cargo space than a Honda CR-V!
An aging engine that requires premium fuel to deliver 252 HP. Otherwise, its 227 HP trails every other midsize 3 row SUV by a considerable margin. A similarly long-in-the-tooth 6 speed transmission compared to that of recently developed rivals. Dated electronics and a small sunroof. A cramped interior compared to rivals coupled with a length that's among the largest in the entire segment. Is it surprising that the CX-9 ranks 25th in sales among midsize SUVs (2 and 3 row) ? Outsold by every mainstream 3 row midsize SUV as well as by several luxury vehicles.
The CX-9 remains an attractive vehicle. Mainly as a result of its excessive length between the front bumper and the firewall, a design trick used by designers for nearly a century to imply, power, performance, and potency. (Freud provides one explanation for that implication.) But it trails the competition in terms of its "U(tility)" in the SUV category. And since it was introduced in 2017, the CX-9 has made very, very few enhancements. A new design is clearly warranted.

I bought a new 2021 Mazda CX-5. I believe the CX-9 has the same engine. It has burned engine oil from day one and getting progressively worse. I looked up and found a bulletin for my car to be repaired. I took it in and they agreed that my car fell under that bulletin according to the VIN but, that I had to wait for the engine light to come on. By my calculation that won't happen until one oil change after my warranty is up. Don't take a chance and buy Mazda’s. They don't stand by their product unlike Honda. Mazda will do whatever it takes to avoid paying to fix the problem, even when they themselves admit that there's a problem. My advice, stick to Hondas and Toyotas. I’ve had problems with their cars in the past but, they always fixed my warranty issues without question and after that they ran forever. Don’t fall for talking point that Toyota and Mazda are now collaborating and even use the same assembly line. It means nothing. There's a class action lawsuit against them (Haven't responded). I personally have filed with the Mazda, BBB, Attorney General, and a consumer agency. It's been two weeks and nothing. I'm lining up a lawyer as my last resort. Don't go through this hell, buy a Toyota or Honda instead.

Problem with electrifocation is the infrastructure. Car companies cam put out all electric cars all they want but if u dont have a lot of fast, reliable and reasonbly priced chargers it is useless. Still may stance is that car companies perfect the hybrid system. Government should 1st improve charging facilities. I aint buying electric cars when here in Manitoba ive probably seen charging ports in winnipeg amd 1 in brandon. Thats a whopping 2.5 hr away from each other

I was going to get rx 350 but I looked into fuelly and don't like mpg of rx. . Cx9 mazda a little better mpg and also cheaper and also reliable from what I have read. What is the difference between 2018,19 and 2021 cx9? Looking to buy used one. Will this suv be too big for 2 adults and a 90lbs dog? Dont need the 3rd row, so I feel we will be paying for 3rd row when we don't need it... drove the cx5 but did not like it much, too small in my opinion. Your advice will be greatly appreciated. Thank u.
Also looking at venza. We are looking for an suv pretty much.

depends on your situation. the CX-9 is 200 in long. if your living situation allows for longer cars, then the extra space isn't that "big," and your dog would love the room. maybe get the one with the bench seat.
