  • The Mazda CX-9 is a great crossover that is competent on road and more practical than it gets credit for. However, when compared to the more hefty Subaru Ascent, Toyota Highlander, and Honda Pilot, is the CX-9 qualified for a demanding family? Let's try to find out.

We have the 2022 carbon edition and it works for us. Our last vehicle before this one was the Nissan kicks SV so the CX-9 for us is like a Cadillac. We can actually get in and out of it and gasp put things into it. Since its just the wife and I now I could care less about the 3rd row as it will always be down. This will be a good vehicle for long distance driving for us.

Excellent video, thank you. After almost 20 years driving a minivan, I just purchased a CX 9. My kids are older teens now, so I am not transporting gangs of kids or gear anymore. I looked at a lot of other 3 row midsize SUVs. One test drive of the Mazda and I was in love. It is such a pleasure to drive! The safety ratings and reliability ratings were very important to me and Mazda does very well in both. This car has everything I need and it is so pretty it makes me smile every time I see it.

In the market for an SUV right now and I've got my heart set on the CX-90. Moreso the idea of the 90 assuming they update the interior and it's exterior is as appealing as the CX-60. It's either that or an Audi Q7. I'm rooting for Mazda to impress me though. Here's hoping we don't have to wait much longer for some info.

I have the Signature 21' I like the captain's middle seats. Really catches your eye looks really like a luxury brand. Also the HUD and vent seats are nice. The Napa leather is what got me.
We also have a 21 GT CX-5. I had a 2016 got t-bones drivers side and rear door. SRS air bags deployed and saved my life. A little shook up but walked away undamaged.

It's a great vehicle. I purchased this same vehicle Touring Plus in Grey and so far its been excellent no issues whatsoever. I do have to say its not excellent in gas but it's not to bad either. Definitely recommend anyone in the market to check this vehicle out.

Best review I have seen on a CX-9 and quite possibly the one of the best car reviews I have ever seen. Great Job!

Ive driven only mazdas for the last 14 years.
Have seen them evolve in all aspects. I just like because they are different from the main stream and tend to offer a bit more details/perks than the mainstream car.
Having said that; the Mazda look is just amazing IMO and you will always be noticed when driving up to any place
    Summary
-Most fun to drive: speed 3 (in second place the 3)
    - biggest issue: Mazda 6 has low quality Brake discs and warp easily. I have reported this multiple times.
    - constant issue: road noise. Though my current cx9 is pretty quiet, but I compare this to previous lower tier modes.
    - best for daily commute: Mazda 6
    - best for family (small): cx5
    Just a few thoughts.

      Forgot to say.
I do not have kids and bought the Cx9 for road trips with my parents and it has met my expectations for that particular use.
I have been on road trips using the third row and had enough room for the basics.

Just got a 2020 Grand Touring with under 11,000 miles on it about 2 weeks ago. Great to drive and I am getting a little above the estimated MPG (24.1 MPG, real calculation, not computer). The CX-9 drives smaller than it is making the driver feel much more comfortable and confident.
I too don't like the hard plastics where my knee rests. Got a cushion I could stick to the side for my right knee and it helps a ton.
My biggest gripe with the CX-9 is the infotainment system. It can take forever to load. The USB port in the center arm rest is great because I am not tempted to glance at my phone but I am constantly leaving it behind since it is out of sight/out of mind.
The cargo is fine for our needs. We are viewing the third row more for emergency purposes, not every day.
Great video. I agreed with most of what you said.

Cool and down to earth review !
I currently drive a 2006 Sequoia SR5 that I am looking to downsize because the kids now drive and I would like to get something more agile, better gas mileage, modern but not be overwhelmed with electronics. The CX-9 is a standout amongst bloated 3rows.

    Great review, spot on .
93 from Shell is a big difference in acceleration and HP when torque transfers to HP as speed builds up.
Also it improves the MPG by 1-2 mpg as you don't have to push the engine as much .
Transmission is perfectly matched to the engines power band and if anyone decides to add Lubegard Platinum it will transform the quickness and smoothness into just unseen in other cars , up and downshifts will be much quicker also torque converter power loss will be greatly reduced ...for 18usd and 20minutes of lifted hood clean hands work is such a no brainer and worth trying ... And I did not mention tranny noise will be lesser .
I have used their product for last 20 years and it always makes a world of difference.
I had 2017 GT and we loved it , lease extended to 42months and zero issues until 44K miles... We may get it again if CX90 will be priced like a Bimmer. Cargo and space were more than OK for us and extra cargo space could help maybe a few times over the years of ownership so if I had to pay a penalty for extra cargo with floaty boaty handling I would never ever trade for as handling and ride are what I use every single times driving , empty air cargo is not .

I think the general consensus is most mid size buyers don’t know what they want so they stick to the brands they know. I know so many people who think Mazda is the brand of yesteryear. I’d argue that in every metric beyond interior volume and some smart storage features the cx9 is the most superior product in its class. Everything else just simply feels like an appliance…my vitamix has more personality than the new highlander... Since the masses don’t flock to it there’s a good deal to be had here for the minority that do.

I have a 2011 CX9 that may qualify as Ford era. It's bigger and it rides higher than the current models that I've driven as loaners. Mine still looks and drives like it's brand new at 113,000 miles. I baby it and no one has ever touched it but the dealer ... maybe that's why.

This is a great suv for a family that needs an affordable 3 row with better features than a Toyota and Honda and it’s shown it’s a reliable vehicle.

Simply love my 2019 CX-9. Its a pleasure to drive, like my 2000 Honda Odyssey. Not like my floatboat, light steering 2011 Odyssey! Maybe its because it's made in Japan, and they haven't turned it into my father's Oldsmobile like many other American cars.

I love the CX9 GT but I would love for it to have a moonroof over the second row seats (like Palisade offers) or panoramic roof (like the CX50 offers). The piano black surfaces scratch very easily and that annoys me. My other car, a 2008 Lexus RX 350 has no visible scratches on the fake shiny wood in the center console. I would love the cargo to be a bit roomier, and I would prefer if they switched the infotainment to touch screen like the Palisade although there are reasons to keep it externally controlled. Also, the Palisade Limited offers heated and ventilated second row seats as well as roomier and heated three row seats, which recline electronically. Fair to say I like the Palisade a lot and it is making me want to switch (although the driving is less exciting). I am looking forward to see what the new CX90 has to offer. A Palisade-like Mazda as far as features and room with the 2.5L Turbo engine would be amazing.

their infotainment screen will never be touch screen like the rest, that's not what Mazda is about. In my opinion the rotary is so much better. But to each their own.

Drive it, high torque = more power at low rpms. In other words, this likely has a power advantage on most of the v6 competition until 5000 rpm or so.

But unlike most of its competitors. The engine won’t blow up. Plus the transmission is smooth as silk unlike its competitors 8-10 speed transmissions that can’t decide what gear it wants to be in.

I can't stand the door panel and that there is no tiny compartment to just drop something small when I'm driving like coins, chapstick, etc. Makes it look cheap and cut corners. I can't stand that the wifi charger is where EVERYTHING you use gets thrown there. Why would anyone use the wifi charging pad if they also throw a wallet, keys, and other items there. They should have made a small cut out right in front of the 10 inch infotainment system. No one uses it because of limited options to place your belongings. The center console opening like a butterfly, it's is just stupid. Lazy and stupid cabin design.
