      CRD716 / Omega examen the only reason that myth exists is because it used to be true, some early TV’s could have defects and actually could emit harmful radiation which could obviously damage your eyes (and everything else). But we don’t hear stories of TVs leaking radiation and hurting people anymore, do we? Also i saw one guy that was saying every time blue light hits your eyes it releases free radicals and partially destroys them, which is ridiculous since the sky is literally blue and we’d all be blind by now.

      Don't count on it. Last it was mentioned, the Rift was still selling strong, and they've still sold twice as many as the Vive so far. Plus Oculus is getting a huge boost in a few months, when they have another big launch, with Touch.
      Considering that Valve just opened up their Tracking-technology for any HMD manufacturers to use, the Vive is the one that might end up in bargain bins in a couple years, if we start seeing better competitors, and the Touch controllers turn out to be way better than the Vives. ;P

    I Have a feeling VR will be a lot like phones with "Oculus" - The first real VR headset that was usable "like the iPhone" but now is copying other companys and being not very revolutionary and overpriced Then HTC VIVE - The Android very revolutionary and made VR as big as it is today only costing a little more for a lot more fetures and support for a much wider view of games.

  • @Cosmic_Corpse22
    @Cosmic_Corpse22 8 років тому

    We got the vive, and the oculus rift. We got the DK2 when that first came out, and it was a lot of fun, but when we got the Vive, the world changed. The experience of immersion is sensational with the Vive, as opposed to the "pretty cool" factor that the Rift has. Never once did I get turned around or forget where I was with the Rift, but after an hour with the Vive, I had no idea where I was actually facing in the real world, and forgot that my home had a ceiling. (Which is a good thing)

  • @Durrutitv
    @Durrutitv 8 років тому +5

    meh, if you're going to shell out $600, you might as well shell out $800 for the better tech the vive brings to the table. now that occulus has supposedly removed headset drm, you can legally buy any games off rift's marketplace and use them with the vive, and you can just use revive on any games that may still have the drm enabled. as for me, I'm going to wait a few generations for price to come down and a broader game market. right now VR is just an expensive novelty.

    • @hiyayakk0
      @hiyayakk0 8 років тому

      Plus, you can move around in the vive, and walk around your room, providing you have the space.

    • @Durrutitv
      @Durrutitv 8 років тому

      yep. and the vive has an ultra low-latency laser scanning positional system while the rift uses a significantly slower optical system that can introduce lag (something that will become a huge issue if they want to introduce room size VR like the rift has).
      Also, I won't be surprised if the cost of the Rift with it's touch controllers (when they're released) will be very close in price to the vive w/ controllers included.
      I have a feeling, though, that prices will decline rapidly with later iterations, much like flat panel TVs, because outside of the R&D costs to procure these technologies, the tech inside the headsets isn't ridiculously expensive stuff. You have a couple 90hz displays, a gyroscope, probably a hardware filter that splits the larger image received from the video card in two. I don't see any reason why these things won't be down to $300 or less in a few years.

    • @hiyayakk0
      @hiyayakk0 8 років тому

      negatyve I have no doubt that that is the case. It really is ridiculous how underpowered the oculus is.

  • @micahcowan
    @micahcowan 8 років тому

    Really solid review. Absolutely agree. Just got my Rift a few days ago, and the next day I'm already putting it down after about a half hour of play. Now that I have a couple more decent games, I'm spending more time (Chronos is teh awesome), but once I finish that... I AM glad I bought it, and also glad I didn't wait to upgrade my PC (vast majority of experiences, including my favorites, run quite smoothly on my underspec GTX 960 on a 3.8GHz AMD chip).
    Lucky's Tale turns out to be one of my favorite games to play on it - you're not wrong that videos do NOT do it justice. I actually even just love the opening "book" screens with the miniature villiages, getting up and peering around, stepping in to take closer looks at things. I love that looking for "hidden" items involves actually getting up and craning my neck to _look_ for them.
    Also, Gunfire Games' two current offerings, Herobound, and (especially) Chronos, are awesome, awesome plays (and are, like Lucky's Tale, 3rd person games, though more RPG-like than Lucky). And I'm awaiting Cyan's Obduction and Damaged Core with great anticipation.
    But that's pretty much it. 2-3 games that are out now, and (hopefully) a couple others on the horizon, are worth playing for any length of time. The other experiences can be great, but they're experiences, and the novelty fades very quickly if there's no gameplay to speak of.
    And yeah, my first thought slipping it on was, wow, the resolution's barely better than I'm already getting on my phone with Gear VR. Screen door effect definitely noticeable (though it IS less than Gear VR). Of course, you'd never get the level of detail in textures and shaders on the Gear VR, and just the simple fact that you can move your freaking head makes a BIG difference in terms of immersion. But you might want to get Gear VR (if you already have a compatible phone) while you wait for Rift to get better games.
    That said, I'm still glad I got it. When it's good, it's REALLY good. Can't help but giggle sometimes, or gasp, at some of the stuff you see. When playing Lucky, if my head (the camera) hits some vines or icicles while I'm following Lucky around, you'll knock them around or break them off just as if your head actually hit it. The chips of asphalt, or soda cans, flying past your head in the Showdown tech demo are incredibly real.
    But I'm a dedicated fan of 3D. Bought the Nintendo 3DS as soon as it came out (in Japan), got a 3D TV as soon as I could, still love those. So it makes sense that I'm satisfied in my purchase. More excellent, enjoyable games (not just experiences), and the Touch, will make a huge difference, and make it more than just the novelty it currently is.

    I think this product looks great, but having a Vive, and knowing what I now know about Roomscale, I can't imagine wanting to replace that with sitting down and looking forward. Minecraft is unbelievable in VR, and I think that the ability to walk up to a door, bend down towards it, and peer through the window at the moon as it sets is a really nice touch. Oh, so it turning around in a circle. And finding three zombies closing in on you. And fighting them off with, yup, your own hands.
    Rift seems like the way to go if you want to play a flight or driving simulator because it does the same thing the Vive does in that case, but it is $200 cheaper. You don't need touch controls or room scale when you've got your mitts on a dual throttle controller, commanding the after-burning Pratt and Whitney F100 engines as you zip through the mountain passes at 650 Knots, 25 feet off the ground... inverted... at maximum power, on the verge of blacking out.

    Get a goddamn vive.Its better.And vr companies were not all rich.Not everyone can build themselves a $1000 pc then get a $800 headset and then around $200(obviously this depends on the person) on some good games.Make some lesser cheap vr,or make it so people can play vr games on their pc so if there friend has vr they can tag along and play with them.

    I have the DK2 and most recently the "consumer" Vive. I was a huge fan of the DK2 but I have to say both the freedom of movement and tracked controllers leave me feeling the Oculus is simply missing the biggest draw card for VR. I never thought it would be that big a deal but it really is.
    The vive is way too heavy and still has the resolution constraints plaguing VR at the moment but the interfaces, forward thought and freedom mean I haven't thought about putting the DK2 back on since I first tried it. Now to just merge the best of both devices and wait for computing power to leap forward and the future in this tech is truly exciting and will be life changing for us all.

    Well, pretty much everything you said was spot on. It's not all that impressive and I'll probably sell mine since it's just collecting dust lately. The screen-door effect is hideous and you can't really make out objects in the distance, so trying it on for the first time is nothing but anti-climactic, especially if you've been waiting for VR for 20 years like I did. Nobody talks about those issues enough, VR is not there yet, Google Cardboard costs nothing and you get the same experience, so if you don't have the money or don't wanna spend that much money - don't be discouraged, you're not missing out on anything. Maybe in 5 years we'll have decent VR screens but so far you can strap your Samsung phone to your face and it's the same thing. There are Android apps if you wanna use Cardboard with your PC. Don't waste your money on VR until it's actually good.

    I bought the rift CV-1 as a brand new unit. So I paid 25 % less (as it is just out of production recently)then retail with no taxes and it came with the 3rd sensor a $90 value. I was happy. The replacement is the rift -S model. The improvement is not huge imo. Oculus built the CV line on their own then Facebook bought the developed unit and took it from there. I believe that is close to accurate. I was happy that mine was built by oculus as I am not a fan of FB or its CEO ( all I will say)
    I have been using it now off and on for 2 months. Ater finishing a learning curve I played a few games from simple to more complex. The net is full of tutorials and instructions to assist
    I think your overall assessment is pretty accurate in general as far as the negatives are concerned. I thought you could have a little kinder to unit because it's still a big jump from that flat 3d to near real 3d in your face.
    You really do need a fairly beefy rig to run oculus and the video card is the most important part. I have a 1660 ti with 32 gb o/c ram on a good asus mobo with an amd chip. It runs fine so far.
    Bottom line I got into vr for$ 500 total
    Including a new 500 gb SSD C drive.
    Would I pay upwards of $1000 or more for vr NO. I passed 3 yrs ago and would still pass today on the expensive systems. However with what I have for what I paid I can overlook the minor screen door ( which is really not that bad and after a few minutes you dont even notice it anymore). I am about to try star citizen today on my rift and quite frankly I believe the experience will be very immersive including the negatives in this review above. I gave this a like with a subscription addition
    May the rift be with me. 🤢 🤮

    I have a rift and it is amazing, but as Jake said, there just isnt enough stuff out there for it. Most likely because it has not been out for all that long, but also because like with any new medium (and VR is a completely different experience, especially from a developer standpoint), no one has any idea what makes for a good VR game. A good analogy is like how when a new generation of consoles come out, and the graphics usually are not that much better than the previous generation, but after a while as developers learn the new hardware, the games improve. The only problem is that in that situation there is already a built in audience, but with VR it has not been proven, and there wont be a mass adoption until the barrier to entry is less prohibitive, and must own games start coming out for it.

    Guys this is a very good review and is exactly what I would say if I were a writer. I owned the Vive for a week and then returned it because I got completely bored with it. It was pretty exciting at first, but after a few days you realize there is hardly any content at all, most of the games are just tech demos by indie developers (this often means 1 person built it himself in his spare time) and the few really good games are over in a matter of hours. I can easily light $1000 on fire and not care, but VR right now is a total waste.

    I was lucky to try the Vive on a showcase and it blew me away. I am not going to buy this generation, but I definetly will in the future. I love the tracking and the controllers, how the handling feels so natural in the VR environment. The two issues I could not come by is:
    First, I wear glasses, and the air managment is atrocious. Heat builds up, the glasses will steam up, this is ever present and breaks the immersion.
    Second, the resolution. Everything in close to midrange looks great, but everything afar is so pixelish - this breaks immersion and also limits the possibilities for the devs to create a well rounded experience since everything distant looks like a low res wall paper.
    Still, I would buy it and get contacts just for playing if I wouldn't have to care how to spend my money.

  • @briank3754

    I have to agree here. I had the Oculus for about a week and the "experience" is great. However, it will need some significant improvements in terms of resolution and screen quality. It may be a few years, but when 1440p or 4K becomes viable this will be a must have piece of kit. Until that time, if you are looking to VR as a full time immersive gaming/simulation environment then you will be severely disappointed. I returned my Oculus due to image quality and light bleed issues. Otherwise, it was a good experience, bit the price tag is a bit steep for what it offers at the moment.

    i agree. i have the rift...and so far chronos, lucky's tale and edge of nowhere are the 3 games that are "good games." dread halls and dead secret were both ok. defintely no games that i would sit there for hours "aside from chronos" like i would with witcher 3 or something similar. i do love the immersion, the screen clarity leaves a lot to be desired though. games like the assembly "first person exploration" bore me to death. i don't regret my purchase, but it's definitely a thing that compliments my gaming instead of overtaking it like i hoped it would

    Hi Jake. I had no intention of being an early adopter, but then I heard what racing was like in VR, so I had to check it out. It seemed the Rift was better for seated experiences, so I got that. And I'm hooked. Racing in 2D is great. Racing in VR is sublime... even with the compromised graphics.Turns out I also like Elite Dangerous and Subnautica, two games I would have ignored in 2D. Yeah, I know I basically bought the Atari 2600 of VR (Vive = Intellivision?), but what the hell, I'm loving it.

    one major thing to note is the headset fits pretty tightly around your head and doesn't allow room for glasses, so if you have very poor eye sight like me and you don't have contacts the VR is going to be just like in real life. blurry AF.

    I've been wanting to try VR ever since Oculus kickstarted their VR project. Now, zoom forward a few more years and I'm at best buy waiting to try out the new playstation vr. I was dead stoked to try it on, but after the experience, I have to say that it was OK. It sucks because I was super excited to use it after so many years, but it just didn't click for me. In fact, it was a bit underwhelming. The underwater demo I played was "eh" mainly because nothing really surprises me anymore, unlike other videos of people freaking out from the shark nearing their underwater cage. I tried the other games as well, and they were also OK, but not mind-blowingly awesome.
    That is until I tried the London Heist. That one clicked for me. It was my first time using motion controllers, so everything was disorienting for me (in a good-kind of way). I felt so immersed in the game, and moving your hands and gun around, felt natural. Even moving your head out of the window and turning to the guy felt very natural. I felt like a badass. On top of that, I felt like I could play the game for hours because of how comfortable the headset was. The only gripe I had with the playstation vr was the screen resolution and maybe the graphics of the game. It wasn't bad per-say, but it was noticeable. Though I did forget about all that stuff after I got a few minutes into the games. All in all, I think I'll wait just a bit longer for VR to get a little cheaper and better. To me, the price-range doesn't justify buying it yet. Maybe I'll change my mind after I try bigger games when the playstation vr officially comes out.

    I have it for FSX and I find it very good for flying small planes like the Cessna 172, the Carenado 182, and Carenado AeroCommander Shrike etc at low altitude. After about an hour the headset starts to get uncomfortable. Also, I wear glasses. I had to have a special pair made up to fit into the headset. That was costly. But all in all I enjoy flying the small planes with it. Planes with the old steam gauges work great. The new planes with glass cockpit panels don't look so good. The numbers are hard to read. You do get the feeling you ARE flying that plane though!

    I agree with the major portion of what you said in this video. A lot is lacking on the software side, games being short or generally simple, and the lack of (excuse the iOS lingo) retina-quality displays make the Oculus Rift still a bit unpolished. However, as a soon-to-be developer, and VR early adopter as well, saving up for and purchasing the Oculus Rift has been a dream come true for me, and though I know it may seem lack-lustre at the moment, I know with companies like Facebook and Valve in the race to make VR mainstream, it's only a matter of time until the VR magic of presence will be something we see all the time, not just in spotty sessions with minigames. :)

  • @keeperoflenneth
    @keeperoflenneth 8 років тому +1

    I can agree with that, in short: it just needs more time to be worth while. Thanks for the input here too Jake.
    My experience in VR so far:
    I bought a Gear VR on prime day, and i returned it after only a day. The deal breaker was how "hacked" it felt trying to get around Samsung's proprietary OS (similar to the Oculus Home). Now i know its not the same as a real-boy VR headset, but the segregation both in terms of hardware and software, and the amount of work to get it to just "behave" with other systems just killed the experience. The only free app i would have used on there that was worth anything to me was the Netflix theater, which was awesome. It gave me a cozy, spacious den and a 'massive tv' to watch my shows on, which was cool- just not $99 worth of cool.
    So to tie that in, it sounds like the current state of the games for Oculus/Vive alike: they both want exclusives, they both want to control the experience, and neither is much more than a single-topping pizza at the moment, not bad--but its no "supreme". I think i'll hold out for them to just make a standardized development platform so they're interchangeable and/or some more worthwhile titles that justify the expense.

    • @Steelebourne

      I got the Gear VR in January and really enjoyed it, but I hardly use it anymore. A big problem with it is the massive power drain on your phone. And if you want to use it for more than 30 minutes, you have to put cold gel packs on top to keep the phone from overheating, which automatically crashes the Oculus app if it does. And that terrible fogging...
      But yeah, that video theater is awesome!

      like, really the ability to use a wired headset, lag free and programs similar to that wold make a VR system worth while, even upwards of $300 if it was good for multiple games (the upcoming fallout 4 re-release for example, or skyrim's re-release) It would be an investment- but like Jake said, it just needs more time in the oven i think. At least is not like 3dtv and just a passing gimic. happy to see it succeed, i just want it to do it faster haha

    I've had an Oculus for a few months now. Still using it, still happy about it. But I agree : content is quite slim. It's better to wait untill the end of the year at least. Hopefully, Touch will release with more quality games.
    But I don't care much about the "fragmentation" of VR market. Unless price is too steep ( well you never know ), everyone owning an oculus will buy the Touch. Except the ones only into simutation games who won't buy arena shooters no matter what. And I don't see why they should be forced to buy extra controlers they might never use.

    I think an opportunity VR game makers are missing is simply giving VR experience as the camera.
