A year later.....not so ridiculously priced now!
Codey Dummer Nope, its 400 permanently now
can you play games that are not desgined for the oculus rift with it? i want the oculus rift for horror games, but i'm not sure if it's worth it.
I got for 400 with touch 2 sensors and five ausome games includin robo recall
It will become cheaper and cheaper by time~like computer
GRaToMiC sorry for late reply, but most steamvr games should work, but some wont work
Remember when your parents told you not to sit close to the TV ... well now prepare to strap a tv to your face because VR is here.
*make existence b e c o m e a screen*
There’s nooooo evidence that it hurts your eyes
CRD716 / Omega examen the only reason that myth exists is because it used to be true, some early TV’s could have defects and actually could emit harmful radiation which could obviously damage your eyes (and everything else). But we don’t hear stories of TVs leaking radiation and hurting people anymore, do we? Also i saw one guy that was saying every time blue light hits your eyes it releases free radicals and partially destroys them, which is ridiculous since the sky is literally blue and we’d all be blind by now.
@Paul Allen It's a myth
Harry Loveland look above
I got one of those little ad's on the side of the video and it was for the Vive XD.
Yanked em

Its better anyways lol

Videos like these is why I consider gameranx to be one of the best gaming and tech review channels on YT.
agreed.
+Kevin Hernandez same
exactly. they don't just brown nose the big companies.
Yeah, they're not afraid of saying ''not worth it''.

This is how a product should be reviewed. I love how gameranx just gives you their honest opinion and backs it up.
If you have the money is it worth it? Hell yeah it's worth it. Dude this is for everyone, I'm 49 and it's the best thing I've ever bought. It's like I've got a movie theater in my house, there is nothing better in this world of tech. My beliefs 100,000,000 %
i think it's worth it too
hey? what's the best scary game to get for oculus?
Do you need a good pc for it

July 14, 2017: It's interesting how much a year can out-date a video review covering a tech product.
really digged the set today. colors are nice and well lit. looks good guys
Thanks! It's quickly becoming my favorite.
+gameranx Yeah it's like it just says"gameranx" Also really awesome that you replied. One of the reasons I love you guys at gameranx! 👍
#communitygoals
gameranx does it right, in terms of presentation and review quality. your channel is the only one i go to each day. very informative, thanks to all the peoples behind the scenes.
its not just that pretty face we know and love.
Wow. Thanks!
Thank you to.
I've tried Roomscale VR with the vive AND the oculus with the motion controllers on both (PAX conventions). I personally like oculus's controllers and headset much more. ;) I also got my own oculus after that so I'm glad I picked that over the vive.
Karltroid thanks! Helped me out because I didn’t know which to get😆
why did that warrant a winky face
I am having trouble reading text even with oversampling and a 1070 TI at 1.5 (super sampling) so would the HTC be better for a desktop experience? Doing work but immersed is my main goal.
I swear I was gonna like the video and go, but the intro was a smart move that got me interested because I'm not a fan of VR "Yet", that is why I'm happy that some one is testing them and making an honest opinion about them for us
I want more stuff
Maybe a Xbox big screen TV inside VR is that more stuff.
I want more money
I want a dad
You should do an updated review now that the controllers are out and everything comes in 399 package
This background is amazing.
thanks!
I found the bokeh a bit distracting.
the best thing about this series is the honesty of the review not just advertising it like others, keep up the good work :)
I respect that you actually lived with it for a while and didn't spit out a review like everyone else.
REVISE AND UPDATE THIS VIDEO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

@@kuromifan10 chief, they are the leading smart phone processor on the market lmao "processor aint that good", the A14 is rumored to be enough to power their new Mac book, tho the macbook is kinda ass.
Thank you for giving an honest recommendation. I have no physical experience with the Oculus but everything you mentioned is exactly how I felt about it and so it is great that we have game reviewers that can see things from our perspectives in addition to the company's and new tech perspectives. I'm not a big fan of your closing tag line Baldino, but your reviews top notch. Thanks again, frfr.
I bought one, and it's totally worth it! I've started making my own games for VR because of it. Plus I can't wait for the Touch controllers to come out, in a few months! ;)
Thanks for being real, Jake.
You missed something:

I was able to buy one and i would totally agree with most of what you said. One of the things i did notice was the less tech savvy a person was the more they were blown away by it, especially old people. I've only had it for a couple of weeks but it has been a ton of fun using it.
Last time I was this early, I won a giveaway, which was never

+Charlie Keyrole I understand that he never won a giveaway like me :(
+Jonas Feldborg you have an amazing understanding of people with poor grammar and bad jokes
+Charlie Keyrole thank you... I think
I just bought it because of the sale. $400 for headset and touch bundle. I think that's a good price point.
So what's the difference between 'price point' and 'price'?
The lawnmower man is a must watch movie for VR lovers!
dude, I seriously appreciate your approach and when it comes to your reviews and videos, it seems like you're genuinely honest, and I really do like your style this is my first video watching now and I will not be following your regularly. I am in the market trying to decide between each to see in oculus, so I look forward to following more of your material thanks
As an owner of an Oculus is 2018 and it's $400 price point with controllers.I find it very worth it! The quality of the product is very good. And most games are VERY emersive!
Kit Fox can you play walking dead on it
You know what's really sweet? In a year, you'll be able to buy the entire Oculus set-up for bargain prices.
doubt it, the DK2's are still selling on ebay for upwards of $400
Anyone that is buying the DK1 or DK2 for any amount of money is a moron.
+Don M exactly my point
Don't count on it. Last it was mentioned, the Rift was still selling strong, and they've still sold twice as many as the Vive so far. Plus Oculus is getting a huge boost in a few months, when they have another big launch, with Touch.
Considering that Valve just opened up their Tracking-technology for any HMD manufacturers to use, the Vive is the one that might end up in bargain bins in a couple years, if we start seeing better competitors, and the Touch controllers turn out to be way better than the Vives. ;P
Don good predictions my boy
Two years later, and the Oculus is said to be really hard to set up, when there is Mixed Reality, which just uses One USB Port and One HDMI Port.
I really liked this. I can't wait to see where the VR experience goes.
The price of the full setup has gone down to 400 dollars, by the way, with the touch controllers.
Good to know I might get one 😆
my grandma is dead
Sorry.
sorry :/
Sorry
D- do I click like? Sorry man.
Cool
I love how you used the original image for the numb nail.
Now I hope you do the same honest, time spent, review of the VIVE!!! These before you buy videos are super helpful especially since I am eyeing the VIVE.
Am I the only person just wants play skyrim in VR?
do the vive
Oh we will. :D
Yes!
+gameranx yesssssssssssss!!!
Watch the full video...
There's no reason to buy this over the vive, devs mostly left the occulus when facebook got their hands on it, the vive is made by the same people who own steam, it has controllers, theres no pixel google-cardboard vision, It can do everything a vive can do and better with more features, has twice as less ram requirements, less USB requirements, and if you can spend 600 dollars on something just commit and wait until you can get 800 for something that isn't garbage.
I'm actually getting the Oculus Rift this Christmas. I saw the reviews on other videos and they're great,
same!
Thanks for the review. I want one VR set. Question: When you say "under developed" what do you mean?
+gameranx btw No Mans Sky 13 days until it's out just saying I just pre ordered it and I am hyped for it, what about you? And will you make a video about it????
Yep and yep!
Yep and yep makes the day go around
they just delayed it to 2018 :(
+Rustlin James hahahaha nah xD it's coming out on the 10th August
Imo it's overhyped just like elite dangerous was
Before I don't buy... because I'm too fucking poor :/
We got the vive, and the oculus rift. We got the DK2 when that first came out, and it was a lot of fun, but when we got the Vive, the world changed. The experience of immersion is sensational with the Vive, as opposed to the "pretty cool" factor that the Rift has. Never once did I get turned around or forget where I was with the Rift, but after an hour with the Vive, I had no idea where I was actually facing in the real world, and forgot that my home had a ceiling. (Which is a good thing)
Yo, GREAT JOB! You are a gold standard for reviewers.
I dig Jake, but all I see is his hair bouncing, since day one my friend.
It may just be jealousy, I'm bald, get a hair cut you hippie haha. Great video, keep it up man. I'm waiting on this whole VR thing until you can basically convert a room with a VR walking station.Power gloves and all.
Can you do a before you buy on the ps vr when it comes out please
why? this is pretty much the same except PS VR is worse...
+JR Texx I doubt you used either of them so your opinion is invalid
+JR Texx OK but it is a lot cheaper and doesn't need a beast computer . Not every one is bill gates here
MrMetalbandit damn, you know more about me than I do!
dude gtfo.
Ninja Robot What I'd say do.. just wait years when they come down in price. I have a feeling it's gonna be like when the Wii first introduced their sensor bar, it was huge for a little while, then they dragged it out for a few years... then we got Kinect and no one really cares about that anymore.
I've experienced RIFT irl, and it is actually very impressive. I didn't feel under whelmed but I hadn't looked into it much because I didn't care.
I'm just waiting for vr to mature and grow a little. Because with things on the horizon like vr gloves I'm starting to get really excited about how far vr will go.
I Have a feeling VR will be a lot like phones with "Oculus" - The first real VR headset that was usable "like the iPhone" but now is copying other companys and being not very revolutionary and overpriced Then HTC VIVE - The Android very revolutionary and made VR as big as it is today only costing a little more for a lot more fetures and support for a much wider view of games.
you couldn't be anywhere further from the truth XD
Before you buy.
More like......

i just got a doritos flame vs mtn dew ice ad on this and i love it
Really solid review. Absolutely agree. Just got my Rift a few days ago, and the next day I'm already putting it down after about a half hour of play. Now that I have a couple more decent games, I'm spending more time (Chronos is teh awesome), but once I finish that... I AM glad I bought it, and also glad I didn't wait to upgrade my PC (vast majority of experiences, including my favorites, run quite smoothly on my underspec GTX 960 on a 3.8GHz AMD chip).
Lucky's Tale turns out to be one of my favorite games to play on it - you're not wrong that videos do NOT do it justice. I actually even just love the opening "book" screens with the miniature villiages, getting up and peering around, stepping in to take closer looks at things. I love that looking for "hidden" items involves actually getting up and craning my neck to _look_ for them.
Also, Gunfire Games' two current offerings, Herobound, and (especially) Chronos, are awesome, awesome plays (and are, like Lucky's Tale, 3rd person games, though more RPG-like than Lucky). And I'm awaiting Cyan's Obduction and Damaged Core with great anticipation.
But that's pretty much it. 2-3 games that are out now, and (hopefully) a couple others on the horizon, are worth playing for any length of time. The other experiences can be great, but they're experiences, and the novelty fades very quickly if there's no gameplay to speak of.
And yeah, my first thought slipping it on was, wow, the resolution's barely better than I'm already getting on my phone with Gear VR. Screen door effect definitely noticeable (though it IS less than Gear VR). Of course, you'd never get the level of detail in textures and shaders on the Gear VR, and just the simple fact that you can move your freaking head makes a BIG difference in terms of immersion. But you might want to get Gear VR (if you already have a compatible phone) while you wait for Rift to get better games.
That said, I'm still glad I got it. When it's good, it's REALLY good. Can't help but giggle sometimes, or gasp, at some of the stuff you see. When playing Lucky, if my head (the camera) hits some vines or icicles while I'm following Lucky around, you'll knock them around or break them off just as if your head actually hit it. The chips of asphalt, or soda cans, flying past your head in the Showdown tech demo are incredibly real.
But I'm a dedicated fan of 3D. Bought the Nintendo 3DS as soon as it came out (in Japan), got a 3D TV as soon as I could, still love those. So it makes sense that I'm satisfied in my purchase. More excellent, enjoyable games (not just experiences), and the Touch, will make a huge difference, and make it more than just the novelty it currently is.
How could you not talk about the porn? Oo
Dj Khaled right Oo haha
+c00lcheezewhizz lol yeah you can

+c00lcheezewhizz friend of my friend watches only porn with it
c00lcheezewhizz Yes dude, the best function so far hahaha
10 people saying they're first. Guys, wake up
Great video, Jake! Exciting stuff's going on here. If I had the opportunity to buy an Oculus right now, I wouldn't. A LOT of money to spend on a curio right now, but as the user base grows and devs get comfy with their kits we'll no doubt see some FANTASTIC games in the next year or so.
Speaking of anticipation, I'd love to get your guy's take on the HTC Vive. Thanks!
This video has not aged well.
yup.
Henrik Swenson What do you mean??
Before you buy : dont :) save up for vive
tru
Yes sir
pretty much
Nathaniel Green i got the rift for free since i bought the first one on kickstarter, and i dont think it was worth the effort off typing in my adress
Nowdays yes, but if Oculus Touch come out, I would choose CV1
So hyped for the next generation of VR headsets :D
When we get to immersion suits for vr sign me up. Would love to truly experience the games. Till then the screen and controller will do just fine after experiencing my friends and seeing reviews like this. Cheers and great review.
meh, if you're going to shell out $600, you might as well shell out $800 for the better tech the vive brings to the table. now that occulus has supposedly removed headset drm, you can legally buy any games off rift's marketplace and use them with the vive, and you can just use revive on any games that may still have the drm enabled. as for me, I'm going to wait a few generations for price to come down and a broader game market. right now VR is just an expensive novelty.
Plus, you can move around in the vive, and walk around your room, providing you have the space.
yep. and the vive has an ultra low-latency laser scanning positional system while the rift uses a significantly slower optical system that can introduce lag (something that will become a huge issue if they want to introduce room size VR like the rift has).
Also, I won't be surprised if the cost of the Rift with it's touch controllers (when they're released) will be very close in price to the vive w/ controllers included.
I have a feeling, though, that prices will decline rapidly with later iterations, much like flat panel TVs, because outside of the R&D costs to procure these technologies, the tech inside the headsets isn't ridiculously expensive stuff. You have a couple 90hz displays, a gyroscope, probably a hardware filter that splits the larger image received from the video card in two. I don't see any reason why these things won't be down to $300 or less in a few years.
negatyve I have no doubt that that is the case. It really is ridiculous how underpowered the oculus is.
"it's seems like an apple product it feels like quality" since when did apple release a quality device?
iphones are really high quality what are you talking about lol.
now the OS is a different story.
@@silk1440 litterally any android brand is acceptable lol
@@gflav if you call a phone released this year with 3 year old specs quality than I guess
@@yeetbomb2015 i was talking about build quality, but the fact that they run just as smooth as top of the line androids with way better specs make them even more impressive. This is coming from a dude thats had android since day 1, then switched to the iphone 7+ and then switched back within a year.
@@gflav yeah no. They have been proven to purposely slow down phones too get you to upgrade and since when is 60HZ just as smooth as 90 HZ
Thanks for the info, I would really like to get one sooner then later. Everyone is pointing toward the htc.
Reviews are on point and give a great perspective of the product, good work 👍🏻
Don't and if you're even thinking about it. Get the the vive.
HTC VIVE -Before You Buy!
I totally agree with you about waiting it out,
for me unless the display exceeds what i see on a 4K display it wont move my wallet.
and I too am a tech early adopter but not for VR YET..
I hear 8K is on the horizon soo lets see.. U never know..
Great work on this channel keep it up..
Thanks!
gonna be a while until gpus can power screens like that..but by then there should be a good amount of content
Super sampling especially on my vive, makes the screen door effect nit visible. I love my vive, but the oculus is god damn underwhelming
3d nvidia glasses were pretty cool. I may try this when I can afford the time for games or if they ever adapt this tech to support virtual presence work, but really looking forward to the full biofeedback suit, treadmill, spending the rest of your life in a matrix tank experience.
600 is not a lot of money for a new technology. The first HDTVs were 10000 dollars and had no content.
These VR headsets don't look very user friendly for people with glasses.
Coming from someone that needs glasses all the time... I tried one last year... yeah it wasn't comfortable in the slightest. I even have one of those headsets where you put your phone in... and yeah that isn't any better, hurts after about 10/15 minutes. after that I'm usually just holding it.
JR Texx The problem is we can't just take our glasses off either, as people so close to a screen like this will hurt and strain our eyes.
Depends, since I'm near-sighted, I'm literally just looking at a screen super close to my face, and that's where I see best.
In fact, because of the fact that I see things much better up close, means that the screen-door effect is simply more present.
If you're far-sighted though, well.. I dunno
They are especially Oculus.
Saphire Linkerman Everything is a blur to me :P
please make a new before you buy of the rift. the price is only $399 now and it has motion controllers which people say are better than the htc vive one's.
This review is seriously flawless. Thx!
Why do you say the price is ridiculously high? No more than a high end phone
600 dollors for a phone is reasonable, for a game system NO
Because your paying 600 dollars for a tiny , low resolution tv you can strap to your face to play games .
If you really think that's how simple the technology is then you are extremely ignorant and talking about something you don't understand
+Rayza NC if you think that 600 dollars is reasonable for this easily outdoable piece of crap then you're ignorant
You haven't even tried it have you
Get a goddamn vive. Its better. And vr companies were not all rich. Not everyone can build themselves a $1000 pc then get a $800 headset and then around $200(obviously this depends on the person) on some good games.Make some lesser cheap vr,or make it so people can play vr games on their pc so if there friend has vr they can tag along and play with them.
Cough* PS4 Neo Xbox Scorpio Cough*
Yeah the 480 looks really good seen a bunch of vids on it already. And is it equivalent to a Nvidia GTX 980 or is it the 970 its equivalent to?
Yeah lets hope ps vr is good :P
+Infamous I tried it out at Best Buy, it doesn't look great.
Vive is not better at all. We wait for touch and then its game over for people claiming that
2016 is the startyear of VR. I always shake my head, if i see such videos. What all people think about gaming in vr. Our Pc with all games and Grapic-engines had raised about 10-20 years. This is the first year of VR!!!!! The first year! Does everybody thought that in the first year only Triple-A-Games arrived in VR? Has the gaming industrie started with Triple-A-Games? I think not!
I like the "live" Before You Buy more. It's cool.
well this is odd, I'm the second comment.
Your 3RD :P
+alfredo arredonodo his 3rd what?
+alfredo arredonodo you're*
Who cares
I just want this to find de wae
I got to play with one of them, and I thought it was the most comfortable thing ever. It was a good experience
From the sounds of it, we are 1-2 years away from making this a great item to have, not just for gaming but for a lot of tasks around the house or office.
Before you buy, realize that this piece of shit is owned by Facebook.
Just use the money for a HTC Vive lol.
The Rift is going to fail against the HTC Vive, like PlayStation VR is going to fail against all other VR headgears.
PSVR isn't even out yet, you can't judge it. But I kinda agree with you.
PlayStation VR is the cheapest though
Valve is the future, and there's a reason they back Vive
They invented vive its HTC who backed vive.
Most agree that the rift is the superior headset when compared to vive. The picture is clearer, its more comfortable, it is lighter, its cable is better, it has built in headphones (big deal), tracking is as reliable as the vive unless you have a HUGE space to work with. The only thing vive has over oculus is controllers. The rift controllers are reputably better than the vives wands (subjective but widely held). Expect a release date announced in october with them being released almost immediately (touch games have release dates for november)
I'm sensing that your a PC gamer that talks crap to console gamers what I don't get about you PC gamers is that you guys pay wayyyyy more than console gamers I know the games look better but they don't look good enough to pay about a thousand dollars for a PC when all we have to pay is 200/400 dollars when Thiers not the biggest diffrence
I haven't tried the Vive but I did mess with the Rift at an event at my local museum and I have to say it was impressive.
But the price was way too high
i did too :) was it in auckland?
Caenir Nope, Cincinnati, Ohio.
***** The Oculus I used didn't have hand controllers but it could identify my hands and so I could still see and move my arms without them.
It is now Mar 2019 and the Rift is now $350 and it comes with the hand controllers. I was really impressed with the system at the Microsoft store where I tried it out. I almost bought one, but decided to wait a little longer to see if version 2 would be coming out. I have to admit that after trying it out it is very hard to wait! I might end up giving in soon. :)
I feel like stores should try to start up a sort of new-age arcade setup with VR technology as long as it isn't available for the average consumer.
You know what would be cool? Connecting an Oculus to a 360 degree camera and see a room from a weird prospective. Hey, that would be an awesome thing to put on a RC.
I think an opportunity VR game makers are missing is simply giving VR experience as the camera.
Imagine playing Arkham Knight, soaring through the sky, but this time, having full control over a 360 camera and being closer to the action.
Love playing in VR on the Rift. :) DCS world is amazing! If you're into sims... you'll never go back to monitor :) Though I would agree that the content really needs time to develop... I'm sure we'll see huge improvements all around in the next 5 years. VR is definitely here to stay :)
I think this product looks great, but having a Vive, and knowing what I now know about Roomscale, I can't imagine wanting to replace that with sitting down and looking forward. Minecraft is unbelievable in VR, and I think that the ability to walk up to a door, bend down towards it, and peer through the window at the moon as it sets is a really nice touch. Oh, so it turning around in a circle. And finding three zombies closing in on you. And fighting them off with, yup, your own hands.
Rift seems like the way to go if you want to play a flight or driving simulator because it does the same thing the Vive does in that case, but it is $200 cheaper. You don't need touch controls or room scale when you've got your mitts on a dual throttle controller, commanding the after-burning Pratt and Whitney F100 engines as you zip through the mountain passes at 650 Knots, 25 feet off the ground... inverted... at maximum power, on the verge of blacking out.
Already bought, love it! ;] Arma 3 + DCS + Oculus, gives me everything I need.:)
I'm waiting for something like SAO's full dive vr technology, even though I know its far off, you bet i'm gonna get that as soon as its released.
I was a early adopter and I love my rift, I just wish there was more content.
vr is like this generations version of when video games started existing back in the 80s, it is far from perfect
I can agree with that, in short: it just needs more time to be worth while. Thanks for the input here too Jake.
My experience in VR so far:
I bought a Gear VR on prime day, and i returned it after only a day. The deal breaker was how "hacked" it felt trying to get around Samsung's proprietary OS (similar to the Oculus Home). Now i know its not the same as a real-boy VR headset, but the segregation both in terms of hardware and software, and the amount of work to get it to just "behave" with other systems just killed the experience. The only free app i would have used on there that was worth anything to me was the Netflix theater, which was awesome. It gave me a cozy, spacious den and a 'massive tv' to watch my shows on, which was cool- just not $99 worth of cool.
So to tie that in, it sounds like the current state of the games for Oculus/Vive alike: they both want exclusives, they both want to control the experience, and neither is much more than a single-topping pizza at the moment, not bad--but its no "supreme". I think i'll hold out for them to just make a standardized development platform so they're interchangeable and/or some more worthwhile titles that justify the expense.
I got the Gear VR in January and really enjoyed it, but I hardly use it anymore. A big problem with it is the massive power drain on your phone. And if you want to use it for more than 30 minutes, you have to put cold gel packs on top to keep the phone from overheating, which automatically crashes the Oculus app if it does. And that terrible fogging...
But yeah, that video theater is awesome!
like, really the ability to use a wired headset, lag free and programs similar to that wold make a VR system worth while, even upwards of $300 if it was good for multiple games (the upcoming fallout 4 re-release for example, or skyrim's re-release) It would be an investment- but like Jake said, it just needs more time in the oven i think. At least is not like 3dtv and just a passing gimic. happy to see it succeed, i just want it to do it faster haha
I saw another review from an honest sounding guy who said the Oculus experience is amazeballs
I played the Oculus and the Vive. For some reason the screen bothered me in the Vive, but not Oculus. I was more blown away with the clarity of the Oculus. That being said the Vive was more interactive due to the hand controls .
Screen door affect and focus are horrendous. It was pretty disappointing... The demo with the alien in front of you is pretty cool though.
