  • This is my latest project, a modular workbench with great storage capacity that can also be used as a mobile tool stand. It's built using the same system as the woodworking bench I made, but this one is smaller, about 1m long and 60cm deep.

This modular design has a lot of practical use in ways not considered. My wife is a habitual sewer, and between her need for storage, a place for cutting cloth, ironing as she goes etc, these boxes would be ideal. Work heights would need to be adjusted of course, but there is a real need... and of course when spending $ on themselves, spending money on cabinetry like this is a no brainer. Happy wife, happy life.

I've adapted this into single units. Instead of having two cabinet boxes and a wide frame, I do a slimmer frame and just one box for a bank of drawers. I put them all around the perimeter of my shop and just put a continuous top down them. For a miter saw, I simply connected the top to the sides to provide a lower platform and its amazing. I don't make mine quite as deep (deep enough for a couple systainers and a few drawers. My workshop looks awesome thanks to your design. I even went so far as to paint the "legs" in festool dark blue, the cabinet insides and drawer fronts in festool gray, and the draw pulls are painted in festool green. It looks like I have a festool super shop. Best money I ever spent getting the plans for this design. Thank you Paoson!

I've been playing about with designs for a new bench, with ideas ranging from flip top parts for tools, MFT style holes, drawers etc ... and then I finally came up with the idea of making multiple smaller benches which could be joined together in various ways to suit the application.
Then I find your video of exactly what I've been playing about with ... you beat me to it by a good few years.
Interesting, I've designed my drawers exactly the same way as you have, including the sliding mechanism ... however I'll be using laminate for the base of my drawers which will provide a smooth sliding action.
I like the method building the frame, simple, easy and immensely strong, with the advantage of using material which is all the same thickness and type ... my design uses a mixture of ply and pine ... I like your method better!
    Many thanks for sharing :)

    So...where to begin.
First of all, thank you for making the video - it is obvious it took a lot of work.
Very useful design - like the shots showing how it works, and how you leverage your existing workbench.
Amazing quality in the build and workmanship. really impressive - great attention to detail.
Great production quality in the video - just enough to give us an idea on your process and steps, but not long winded or overly drawn out on unnecessary scenes.
    thanks for sharing.

My first workshop table was a 4ft x 8ft beast with drawers and the same levelling feet as this one. I’ve started to feel it’s a bit too large for the majority of general assembly work so I’m considering making 6 of these, two for a mitre saw station and the other 4 to be able to assembly into a 4x8 workstation for breaking down large sheets but then allowing them to be pushed up against the wall of the shop to create an open floor plan area for other tasks when needed

I like the modular nature. I can't decide whether to build two of these or one big one. My concern about the modular one is that when connected together you couldn't use all the dogs for making perfect 90 degree cuts. No matter the connection type I think the error would be too great vs one big cnc/parf cut top. For small pieces and clamping it's great though. Really like the benches.

    • @ice4142
      @ice4142 4 роки тому

answering my own question I guess you cut have a t-track on both side and use another piece of metal to make sure the join the rock solid. The two tops would need to have the dog holes cut at the same time in this configuration too.

Hi. I just recently purchased your planes for the Modular Workbench and find it very organized and lots of detail however, as a suggestion, if you were to label the individual parts in reference to the exploded views I think, it would improve the figuring out what part is what and were does it go dramatically. I enjoy your channel and your very clever cabinet making style! Thank very much for sharing!

Hola. Cuanto tiempo!
My only concern is if I want to use a couple of the work benches as an assemble table - will the be dead flat and on the same plane? Assuming that each bench is built same size and accurately and that the floor is level.

Ok so I have purchased both the plans for this and the larger bench and plan to make them all.
What brand of hinges and drawer slides do you recommend for these?
After the larger table is made do you ever use a miter saw again?
If you do. should I make one of these to mount one with a dust shroud?
Do you find it easier to use a tablesaw or the track saw?
Is a tablesaw needed in the shop anymore?
I am limited on space and looking for compact yet customizable designs that flow with the evolution of my shop.

At 9:45 in your video, you shake something on the glue. Is it salt? And what is this done for? Grazie mille!
ps. I just looked it up on internet. apparently, salting glued pieces minimizes slippage of the glued pieces. thanks for sharing this tip.

yes, I sprinkle salt on all the surfaces so that the parts won't move when tightening the clamps. Send me some photo of your progress!

Just got round to watching this, it looks fantastic. Would something this small work for handplaning work (or two joined together)? Or do you think that it would not be stable enough? I could replace castors with solid feet for my needs I think.

Yes, you can lengthen the necessary pieces and have solid feet. This bench is stable enough for handplaning work!

Ok. What did you shake onto that small piece of ply, around 9:50 😄. Nice design. I’m looking forward to watching the rest.

I think you mean the salt, to prevent the pieces from moving when tightening the clamps

where do you go to acquire the build plans? Also I think I found them but what is the US dollar conversion? How many variations are in the build plans specced for this project?

Suso, I purchased these plans a while ago and would like to modify to expand to 3 banks of drawers instead of two in order to save some of the "wasted" space when joining multiple units together in a row. So instead of building 3 of these I would build 2 units each with 3 banks of drawers. Would the same framing style and width be strong enough if I put wheels or feet under the centre of the middle bank of drawers?

    • @Paoson_Woodworking
      @Paoson_Woodworking  Рік тому

hi Kevin, you will not have problems if you put wheels in the middle of each frame. Send me some photo!

This is a pretty solid little workbench. While once you figure out how it comes together, it is physically Easy to assemble ua-cam.com/users/postUgkxyFZUPFEey-PuqsPMxqaykBhgA1LWxFHh by yourself. But the diagrams explaining the steps are really pretty bad. I could not get the handle pins in all the way despite multiple attempts, so I just used a screw I had on hand for the 2nd handle. I could not get the first pin in further or pull it back out. You are supposed to hammer it in, but I had no leverage and the handle is plastic and I did not want to risk breaking it. I will get a lot of use out of the bench because of the convenient size and height. It does fold up nicely for storage. They even explain how to fold it so you don't get pinched...that is important!

hi Suso what do you think about using mdf for the cabinets instead of plywood? I would like to save a few euros with current prices.

Hello, I'm interested but I would ask you if you believe you can build it without a lot of tools, making the cut in parts store. I just approached the world of wood and I have no workbench currently use two wooden sawhorses and a board. Thank you and congratulations you are very good
