I live I massachusetts and I'm 43 and I can't see anything out of My Left Eye. I've been thinking about getting a Corneal Transplant for years. Keratoconus has ruined My Life and has contributed alot to My depression. I had to stop playing sports because of it and I have excelled in sports My whole life.
I had a corneal transplant in 2020 and regret it terribly. I have keratactonus in both eyes but so far great vision still in right eye. For four years I have had multiple injections and procedures to stop the graft rejecting. Significant pain, eyelid droop is severe, now developed cataract, cost is significant, can’t go outside without sunglasses, recently had glaucoma surgery which has caused migraines and further eye dysfunction and now eye tremor. My surrounding eye has lost fat and made it appear sunken from the medications. I previously played sport 5 times a week which I’ve had to give up. I have missed functions and social activities. I can’t wear eye makeup (I know sounds vain but I’m young and previously enjoyed this). I continue to have little vision but the impact the graft has had on my life is significant. 😢 My experience has been you will see little from specialists and groups talking about the graft and side effects post surgery and the lifelong medications you have to take (at one point I was on 7 different drops) most talk about contact lenses or cross linking. Just my experience I’m sure there have been many successes.
i feel like my kera is getting kinda bad. i want to get the transplant because i feel like its my onyl option thank you for your story and sorry for your loss. maybe i just need to live with being basically blind in one eye.
recently just got my corneal transplant yesterday, I was awake when they operated on me, however the anaesthetic they used was twilight anaesthetic which puts you in a sleepy state but you’re still conscious it was hella scary in the moment, im glad its over now though.
Sir please tell me whetger dalk or full thickness does it cause pain? During surgery its painless i knkw but after anaesthesia goes does it pain very much? I had compression sutures and it pained a lot please tell me about pain factor only then i will come to your esteemed hospital
I had a traumatic eye injury with a box cutter cutting more then half of my left eye. They were able to save it and i just had my second surgery to try to restore my vision with putting a new lens in my eye. But do to the injury being straight across my cornea my doctor is telling me I will now need to have a cornea transplant to be able to fully see. I’m sure nervous as this will be my 3rd surgery and it’s going to take place in Aug. 2023. Can anyone please share with me what to expect? And help share with me any of the struggles you may have had along the way. Please 🙏. I look forward to hearing from you.
I got my corneal transplant done in January of 2020. The surgery itself is not painful at all, but the recovery is a long journey, constant eye drops, one is a anti rejection drop which will be part of your life forever, and the other that I would recommend to get for dry eye is Blink Gel tears. The most cringiest part after surgery is the removable of the sutures, but it’s nice and quick and painless. Only problem that I have with it now is how fast my eye gets dry. I use contacts and for my corneal transplant eye I have to use a scleral lens and with it on I have 20/20 vision. Overall it’s so worth it in my opinion, and I forgot to mention never ever rub your eye during the healing process. Praying for a speedy recovery for you and also that the surgery goes well! 🙏

Not a doctor but from what I've gather, no, the cornea trasnplant will not complety heal one's vision especially if you have other eye conditions like astigmatism or myopia, the transplant will only heal the downsides of keratoconus itself (fogy vison/light distortion) Again, this is what I've learn form my own research, if someone more educated sees my comment, feel free to correct me
I'm might be getting the epismart epi on done soon .if I'm not mistaking it's going into phase 3 trials .I got advanced kc but still a candidate for cross linking and doc said he will do ck also .does ck hurt ?
I am not a doctor but if the Keratoconus is already crossed all limits then why to do cross linking? Cross linking is required to prevent further progression. In my case doctor advised that a cross linking is meaningless because my KC is very advanced alredy but then again I am not a doctor and not aware of your Keratoconus situation so my advise is to take two three opinions and preferably an option from a doctor who is working on a salary where doing cross linking won't make him extra money and yes the cross linking is painful but if its required then you need to go for it but as I mentioned take opinion from different doctors.
@@Kashif314 hey I have a moderate amount of keratoconus, I found out a year ago I had kc. I’ve been doing pentacam topography test every three months and since then my eye is stable do you think I should still get cross linking even tho I have been stable since then. I’m 23 years old
@@HarpSD858 Bro I am not a doctor but I tell you what my doctor told me. My Keratoconus was diagnosed at a very advanced stage in my right eye so my doctor didn't advise cross linking for the right eye. For my left eye I have moderate Keratoconus and he told me to have a topography every few months to see if Keratoconus is worsening. If it does than we need to go for cross linking. From your name I believe you are from India and my doctor was also from India. Doctor Gaurav Prakash a very reputed doctor practicing in Abu Dhabi. So if you need my opinion (As I mentioned I am not a doctor) I suggest you keep going as you are. You are still not out of the danger zone considering your age. I mean its still many years before you can safely say that it won't progress but till then you need to be very careful and NEVER delay topography. Sometimes we get lazy and delay things but later we pay the price. Also cross linking is painful and I believe in an year or two we have EPI Smart technology available so if your Keratoconus is stable and not progressing you can wait for the EPI. But that's just my suggestion. Your eye doctor has the final word but here I want to mention one more thing that always take two or three opinions before you go for any surgical or C3R kind of procedure because unfortunately some doctors do cross linking for everyone even with those having Keratoconus that can't get more worse and a cross linking for them is of no use. They do this to make money of the patient. As I mentioned you are young and you have chances of progression so keep monitoring your eyes for any changes and if you have any changes than you need to stop it. In my case my left eye didn't progressed much but my right eye progressed and became very bad. Feel free to ask any more questions you have.
