I have been looking for a cheap DIY to set this exact trolling motor up on my oldtown bigwater. I think I found it, thank you so much sir, very well explained!
It worked really well for me.
Knowing the items you are using & mentioning them correctly might keep others from creating a disaster. Plywood for the vertical mount (looks like pine to me). Also, carriage bolts with washers slid over them - you can see the washers do not sit flush to the head of the bolt! As this mount is used, the bolts will start to loosen up as the washers gets pushed onto the formed nut. Place washer on top of vise - vise opened to slightly larger than the nut formed on the underside of the carriage bolt - put bolt in washer - place bolt & washer on top of vice - bolt head facing up - hit bolt head (with BALL PEEN hammer) until washer is seated against bolt head. This drives the formed nut into the washer, removing any space, creating a much tighter grip.

Hey bud, great job. I purchased my new hoodoo element 100s this winter. I fish a 990 acre lake. I also installed my transom mount, I used HD PVC, With a 2×6. Just an idea for you. I added aluminum on both sides where the motor clamps screw in. The wood will eventually crack. But I have the 2.5 Suzuki, since I only weigh 152lbs, and the motor weighs 29 lbs. Great build though..🎣🙏

Good video. does this make the kayak go at an angle since its not mounted on the back or front?
The kayak went perfectly strait just had to hold the tiller handle a little off center.
I think you may have answered it already, but did you not need a counterweight? I duplicated your installation (haven't added a battery yet, and I haven't put it in the water yet). But just sitting on it in my basement, it seems very off balance, even though the motor I used is only about 12 pounds.
Hey Joe! I didn’t have a counter weight and I’m trying to remember my location of the battery. It’s been years since I have had Thai kayak. I think I put the battery in the middle section of the back. I used kind of a smaller battery and I may have my tackle Box or something on the other side but it never threw me off balance. It won’t affect you in the water in my opinion.

Do you connect your trolling motor directly to battery and use no breaker box?
Directly to the battery.
Tried to find it in the video what trolling motor is this? What size battery? I have this same kayak and I'm trying to gauge the cost to do this setup. I have some long paddles for duck hunting and this may save me TONS of paddle time lol
I got the cheapest min kota at Dicks sporting goods and I got a Duracell battery from batteries plus. I think the motor at the time was around 80 and the battery was around there as well. However, these days it’s going to be more expensive for sure.

Are you able to get full paddle stroke with the motor mounted?
Well that’s a little tricky on one side but the motor is why you don’t need to paddle. Ha! No you have to do a short paddle on the side of the motor mount and a full paddle on the other side.
What about counter weight for the other side?
Didn’t affect it at all really. I put my battery in the middle then I put a few things opposite side but didn’t really affect it . Definitely think having a trolling motor on the back in the middle would better but on this hybrid kayak it was the best option.
What size trolling motor are you using? How much thrust?
I got rid of this kayak a while ago and I can’t remember which trolling motor I had. I believe it was the cheapest minn kota I could get from Dicks sporting goods.
Will this work on my old town canoe
I’m sure you can rig it to fit. Can really work on any kayak or canoe just have to measure and have a long enough rod to put on the boat.
Hello there, what is the shaft length?
I bought the aluminum square tubing at Home Depot and then attached it to my kayak. Then I drew holes where I needed to drill holes for motor mount. Once I got all that done then I drew a line so I could cut off the excess and then put end caps on it. I can’t remember the exact length. I definitely had extra though

Ha! It does take some time to steer but you eventually get the hang of it.
