  • Mounting a trolling motor to a kayak with a control box can be difficult since every kayak out there is different. In this video, I outline a couple different steps I took to use a side mount and a rear mount for my trolling motor.

    My first time Kayaking and this Kayak held strong. ua-cam.com/users/postUgkx4k5UrhC3v_Y4hIEaXLGvHcN5a5aBmZNB The water got pretty rough as a speed boat zipped by me, and the Kayak withstood it (I expected to be capsized). The Ores are very easy to put together, the pump worked beautifully. the seats are a bit hard to sit in after a while (I recommend sitting on the floor). after reading the reviews I was very scared it'd get a hole in it, the material is very strong and durable. The Air valve may need a small Phillips head screwdriver to adjust, other than that, it's well worth the money!(update)I've gone Kayaking in 3 Lakes and 2 rivers totaling about 40 miles. the kayak had two holes and they patched easily and no other problems can't wait for kayaking season this year!

    I purchased the HOODOO SPORTS TEMPEST 120 HYBIRD EDITION. I run the cockpit fitted 46lb thrust trolling motor, they make where my PDL drive would sit. Then I purchased the Bixpy J2 motor, attached to my rudder. Both are on the kayak, for every trip. But I use one or the other, and always have my paddle, so I'll always get back to my launch spot. I researched for a year, and wanted the Oldtown 120 powered by Minn-kota. But at that time, you couldn't find any good kayaks. I didn't want to DIY any motors. But if it's working for you, food job bro. I know they're very tricky. Be safe..🤟🎣🙏

    Great video! Very clear explanations. The Newport NK300 and NK180 have me seriously looking at options for my 2016 Native Slayer Propel 13. The easy mount for me is to put the motor right in my Propel drive slot. Optimally, I want to speed up my trip to the hole and pedal the yak once there. The twin thruster models have advantages, but the ones I've seen are very weak motors. Still considering!

    I have a 10 ft Hoodoo kayak that I have a side mounted trolling motor and it works fine except obviously the kayak wants to Veer off to one side for a little while until it's up at speed and then I got a bigger kayak that was heavier I went with the rear mount and an extension tiller for the handle and it works phenomenal. I did not want to mess with a bunch of different wires and cables and having to deal with replacing pwms all the time but the setup I have now works perfect. If you aren't using a PWM or ESC then you are wasting about half of your battery power. The ESC/PWM allows your trolling motor to run 2-3x more efficiently, allowing you to use a smaller battery or the same battery for 2-3x the duration of your current setup.

    Cool system! The actuator is a great idea. Looks a bit slow though, but nonetheless very nice. I have an inflatable kayak so the options are very limited. I had to build my own system using a Bixpy motor mounted on the stern. What I particularly like about Bixpy, is the fact there is a wireless remote control to operate the motor. I believe they are the only ones with this technology. So you can operate the motor from anywhere in the kayak. Thanks for the video. Too bad I just found it.

    There is a lot I like about this design. Not totally convinced that AE Power actuator is necessary though. Does a kayak really need trim? Or is a fixed depth all we need in something going less the 6 miles per hour? I would do steering control cables to get ride of that rod getting in the way. Just my thoughts

    • @WhiskeyWood_Studio
      @WhiskeyWood_Studio  2 роки тому +1

      Trim isn't necessary. It's just nice so if I go shallow, it won't hit the bottom.

    • @WhiskeyWood_Studio
      @WhiskeyWood_Studio  Рік тому

      Wasn't terrible. Crappy thing in Mich is that you can't register a new watercraft online, you have to go into SoS.
      They'll ask for year, make, model, serial number stamped on the hull, and possibly a bill of sale/receipt. I didn't have the receipt anymore and they didn't give me trouble over it.
      Once registered, the sticker they gi e will need to go on the bow of the kayak. You'll also need to get white stickers to put your boat's registered ID on the bow.

      @@WhiskeyWood_Studio Yeah, I registered mine yesterday. The SOS lady sounded like a leaking tire with all the sighing. She walked away and had to confer with a coworker 3 or 4 times. She demanded that I pay tax a second time because I didn't have a bill of sale. When I explained that Walmart collected tax when I bought it, she responded with "How do I know that?". When I responded with "Common Sense", she got very upset. It was a drama filled event to say the least. But it's done and I'll be out on the water tomorrow. I ended up using a RAM Mount and a ball I 3D printed to hold the shaft.

    A problem I've run into trying to register my paddleboard with a custom transom and trolling motor in Texas -- the paddleboard did not come with a standard serial/hull# recognized by the U.S. Coast Guard. It has to be in this format: MIC-XXXXX-XXXX. MIC is Manufacturer Identity Code, so for example for Old Town Canoe it would be something like OTC-5 digits-4 digits. I can't get the seller to do this (I can't blame him: why would he go through this bureaucratic rigamarole for a single customer he's already made a sale to?). I'm probably the only customer who's putting a motor on one of his paddleboards -- not that common. So now I'm in a bureaucratic Catch-22 black hole. I either use it illegally and risk a fine, or dump the whole investment down the drain.

    First off, with the Bixpy, I would say don't buy it if you will have to install under the boat. These things collect weed and might stop and you will need access to remove that weed. He's using a cheap AGM 35 amp battery. Yesterday's technology. Lithium is the way to go. Yes it cost more but it's worth it.... Let's compare. His battery is about 24 lbs, my Battle Born 50 amp is just 17 lbs. If he treats his AGM in the best way he will never bring it down by more the 50% or it will die in a much shorter time. That gives him a much heavier battery at only 17 or 18 amp hours. I can and do bring mine down almost all the way. Do the math. Lets also consider that my battery will last much longer.
