In this video we discuss our top 5 "sleeper" guns, these can be guns that are setup for hunting but serve the same purpose as their tactical counterparts, guns that no one really cares about but are actually awesome, guns that look stock but have special features "under the hood," military surplus rifles that can serve in defensive roles that few consider, or milsurps that cost less than their more desirable cousins but are cheaper and more accurate. Stay tuned, much more on the way.

A 12-gauge pump-action shotgun will never really be obsolete. I'd lay money 300 years from now, shotshells will still be manufactured and people will still put them to use.
Those Smith 422/622s are a very handsome firearm. Clean lines.
The Aklys integral suppression conversion costs a fair bit, but less than its competitors, e.g. AWC Amphibian.
Everyone wants an M1 carbine! Paratrooper version for me, please. .30 Carbine is an underrated round, but I especially like it out of a handgun :)

The M1 Carbine is a handy little firearm. I regret selling mine. However, depending on what type of magazines you have it could get lumped in with the AR-15 “assault weapons” group. I hate that term. It’s wood stock, like a mini14 makes it less “sinister” looking.

If you're talking about having to go to court, I'm thinking ANY suppressed gun would be a big disadvantage. Sleeper or not, I'm pretty sure a good prosecutor would tear that up.

    • @MaximRecoil

The only gun in this video that they said was in the "court sleeper" category was the Remington 870. The others were in different "sleeper" categories, which they explained for each one. The other "sleeper" categories didn't even have anything to do with self-defense, much less going to court.

Definitely agree this is a sleeper that gets overlooked from the myths of its past. Within 100 yards it is a force to be reckoned with! Something made in 1943 in my case is becoming one of my favorites in my collection.

I think kinetic weapons are here to stay for a very long time. I wouldn't be surprised if we're fighting wars on Mars in a hundred years using something that's basically an AR-15. Dreams of lasers and plasma weapons in the hands of the common soldier or civilian are probably a long ways off.
The real question is, will electromagnetically propelled projectiles overtake chemical propellants in the near future? You can already make a handheld "Gauss gun" right now with a little know-how and some off-the-shelf hardware, but it's not exactly practical. There's also caseless ammunition as a possible replacement for the traditional brass and lead. We could see some changes, definitely, but I have a feeling the basic technology behind small arms is going to be quite recognizable for centuries to come.

One of my favorite shotguns to play with is one my dad bought about 15 years ago. It's an old 870... the thing was painted some sort of drab green by the police dept who carried it locked in a squad car cabin carrier. It is absolutely beat to hell and looks like something you would hammer nails with. But that is the smoothest pump shotgun in the entire inventory... and he bought it for a song

You definitely expanded my idea of sleeper guns. To me, they’ve always been the gun that wouldn’t cause an uproar if it was used or carried for defensive purposes. As you first stated, this is often aesthetics. A few on my list were the 870, the M1 carbine, a Mossberg MVP Patrol and a Remington 7615. Perhaps the new Ruger PC carbine could be in that realm. Or maybe the fightlite SCR to a small degree.

Thanks guys, I'm glad you touched on the M1, I'm not the average 5'11 US male and being shorter I have found the M16 or Winchester 30-30 my grouping is like a football field. With the M1 or the Marlin 30-30 I can keep it pretty tight. I'm not saying one is better than the other but it is a better fit for me. Down side of the M1is after 2 full bananas you really should stop, swab the barrel, and let it cool before you run 2 more. And like you said the springs wear pretty fast. Still my goto when I need to put a slug where I want it under 300 yards.

I just recently bought my first firearm, and I'd definitely say it's a sleeper. It's an Astra A-100 in 40SW, 13+1 mag, double action and single action.
I bought it because it feels great in my big ol' paws, it was less than $300 after taxes, has a reputation for being reliable, and 40SW I think is a nice compromise between 9mm and 45 ACP. The downside is the Astra A-100 hasn't been manufactured since 2006, so spare mags can get pricey (north of $60), and replacement parts can be a tad tricky to find. It's also in no way a concealed carry pistol, as it was designed to emulate a Sig P228 while being economical. Makes for a solid home defense weapon, though.
I'm already saving up for my next pistol. I'm on the fence between an used civilian version of a Makarov (has thumb screw adjustable elevation rear sight), or a new Walther CCP M2. The Makarov clone is sub $300, whereas the CCP M2 is a tad over $400. I'm leaning towards the CCP M2 as 9mm is ultra common, and the weapon is designed for concealed carry.
People keep trying to push Glocks on me, but I really hate the grips on Glocks, as they feel like they're jabbing my palm with a spike, and I also don't enjoy shooting the M9, which dealers have also tried to steer me towards. Let's face it, if everyone had the same shooting experience, there wouldn't be so many dang models of weapons. Gotta find what works for you.

Grandpa’s 12 gauge is a true beast. Follow the math:
-loaded with 4 shells of 00buck
    -each shell holding 9 pellets
    -each pellet is 32 cal.
-each shell is fired one per second
-that’s 9 32cal rounds headed down range per second
-36 rounds in four seconds or 540 rounds a minute. That is the rate of fire of a slow to moderate full auto.
Like I said grandpa’s shotgun is a beast only fools would underestimate.

My house handgun is a S&W model 19 357 with night sights. Years ago a sergeant for a beach town (rough town, population quadruples in the summer and rift raft staying in the hotels in the off season) carried a 1911. This was not the Dept. issued gun. He was an avid firearms guy and got permission from the Chief to carry it. During a stolen car chase and apprehension he fired during the arrest of the driver (probably sympathetic reflex as he grabbed the door handle with his left hand and his right hand fired). Long story short he was charged with murder and the prosecutor introduced several gun rags with a 1911 or 45 acp on the cover saying "MAN STOPER". This is exactly what you're talking about. For the day and time this officer carried a non issued firearm of a higher caliber.

I would agree that a shotgun configured for bird hunting and a surplus weapon like an M-1 Carbine could be considered unobtrusive but I think what you guys should have done was consult a defense attorney who actually has defended at least a few clients in a citizen vs citizen shooting or even a youtuber I know who has himself/herself been involved in a shooting and actually went to trial for it. I have to say, you go runnin' around with a suppressed weapon with a can on it like those and you're involved in a shooting with another citizen, you're asking for trouble. Doesn't matter what you think is low profile/low key or 'no big deal' but with those suppressed weapons other people as in a jury are going to look at those in they way they look at weapons employed by assassins, the mafia, black ops and spy stuff and that's going to affect how you the shooter are seen, and it's especially going to have an affect on the police when they first come to investigate. It's the same thing with using some really exotic, or homemade, or negatively branded ammo like for instance the "R.I.P." ammo designed for over the average destructive power on the human body. Over the counter defense ammo should be fine but anything that is advertised for some kind of 'super destructive effects' is going to turn some kind of opinion against you. Even if a shooter goes to trial and is exonerated, there would be a very large legal cost because I'm sure you'd want your own retained attorney and not a public defender. Go ahead and ask an attorney what his/her fee would be for a trial like that, you might be very surprised. Once again, it doesn't matter what you the shooter think or what other shooters think, it's going to come down to the police, the DA's office and in the worst case scenario the jury. It's also quite possible to win a state case but lose a civil case in the amount of several hundreds of thousands of dollars or even a few million dollars. Get some information from someone who actually knows what trouble you can actually create for yourself in weapon and ammo selection.

Any semi-auto 22lr carbine with 10+rd capacity is a great home defense choice for seniors or disabled persons who can't handle recoil. For my 74yo mother, I put together a Rossi RS22 with 25rd mag and barrel-mounted flashlight that she keeps by her bedside. It weighs 4.5lbs and has virtually NO recoil.

If had to pick a sleeper rifle it would be a lever action rifle and my sleeper pistol would a single action revolver and both of these guns would have wood furniture because wood apparently makes the gun less dangerous to liberals.

My dad got a customized Mosin, its a badass gun. Got about $800 into it and shoots great and accurate. He uses it for deer hunting.

Customised stock, Gehwer 88 Comission Rifle in 8mm Mauser. 29" barrel shot SUB-MOA, with Rem 700 iron sights.
Used to pop crows at 200 yards with it.

This episode was very reminiscent of the old Barry days ... I was there at the start from Barry making that first phone call to Hi Point about shaking your ammo or something... Barry added a touch of colorful humor but added a wealth of knowledge also ... may he Rest in Piece...

You are completely right , that's because of the media.
But that's a conversation for a different video.
I love grandpa's ol 1911 and suit case gun.
The case gun is a antic but still fires and is beautiful.

That 622 in the same color is the gun I learned to shoot on many years ago with my Dad. I've been waiting for that to come down off of the wall to be in a video for a long time.

I have a 91/30 with about 8 inches of clapped out bore that shoots less than 4 inch groups, and an m38 that I can hit soda cans at 350 yards. (Checked with a blazer range finder) never count out the old milsurps. They can be phenomenal!

I have an old swedish Mauser someone had chopped the original barrel down to 25" or so, put a plastic stock on, forged and ground the bolt onit, and put a scope on it. It had a new trigger on it and everything. I traded a Savage 110/111 (whatever it was) that had a lot of problems for it. I plan on keeping it sporterized, but doing a new stock and a Vortex scope (it had a tasco. A TASCO!) I'll probably use it for longer range hunting if I ever go out west or I'll use it for longer range target shooting.

My personal sleeper that I own is a youth model 870...a simple hardware change and it becomes a tacticool shotgun that's already got a shorter barrel

My main sleeper gun would probably be my old Winchester model 12, bluing is worn out, some rust stains on the metal, but is in great shape mechanically and you wouldn't want to get hit with that sweet slam fire action on it. Pow!

The M1 Garand and the M1 Carbine are the ultimate sleepers in my opinion. Most people would look at either of them and not think anything of it, its just an old rifle. But they kick some serious ass if necessary.
