    My new "surplus market" is the Police trade in stuff. It's still reasonably priced and in some cases they're basically giving away .40 cal Glocks for 200 bucks. I really like the stuff that's marked "For Police and Government Use Only".

      I almost bought a 5906 for $280 on sportsman's guide. By the time I contacted my FFL to make sure they were taking transfers, it was sold out.
      Can confirm on the .40 glocks. Got a g22.4 for $299 with tritium sights, like new. Put a .357 sig barrel in and it's my woods gun

    I had a Fudd at at gun show try to sell me a MAS 36 with a beat up stock and a shit ton of rust for $700 by saying "the bore on this French rifle is in great condition because they surrendered before they could use it" I told him the bore is irrelevant with the current condition of the rifle.
    Later on another Fudd was selling a Finnish Mosin for $600 it had holes drilled into the chamber for an optics mount that was painful to see.

    I managed to get a beautiful 1908 Brazilian Mauser for $450 at my local gun show about 6 months ago. I believe it was made in 1910. Besides the marks from where it was dropped or sat on the ground, you would never guess the thing is 110+-years-old. Brazilian crest is in beautiful condition, only ever so slight faded in some spots. I love how it says, "United States of Brazil," which I believe they dropped way back in the 1960's. Everything is original, except the bolt. The stock is in impossibly great condition, I thought it had to be a replacement. Nope. Even still has "7MM" carved into it. Incredible shooter. Accurate, with very little recoil. It's become my second favorite gun, just below my Russian Makarov.
    I don't think you'll be able to find one in that condition for under $500, though. The guy I bought it from said to me straight up, he knew nothing about it. He made a trade with one of his friends, and the Mauser was included. He was just looking to get rid of it because he had no room for it. I would strongly advise any Mauser fan to buy one if the opportunity presents itself, so long as the price isn't outrageous, of course.

    My favorite surplus rifle has always been the Mosin m44. Partly because you used to be able to get them for under 100$ everywhere and if you know what you're looking for .you can't find a straighter shooting rifle. There's a reason the top snipers in history used the Mosin. Simo hayha the highest scoring sniper in history had access to mousers and Italian rifles and pretty much anything he wanted...and he still used his old iron sight Mosin. My second favorite used to be the 617 Argentine but those aren't really surplus anymore lol. I can't remember the last time I seen anyone get a bulk order. More than 20 years ago now.

    Glad to say that I've got a Mosin Nagant M91/30, a Carcano M91/38, a Carcano Cavalry Carbine (was my fathers from when he was a boy back in the 60's), and a Mauser M98. Love all of them. They shoot great, are very accurate, and a couple are rather hard hitting (the Mosin especially, it's been trimmed down to a 16 1/4" barrel). But the Carcano can be difficult to find ammo for (PPI is the only place I can find 6.5x52mm ammo for it), but recoil is rather mild and it is a pleasure to shoot.

    Back then, we had $29 M38 Turkish Mausers, $39 Mosin 91/30, $69-99 Swede Model 96, various 8mm Mausers less than $250, M1 Carbines for less than $300 unless it was a desirable manufacturer like Winchester or Rock-Ola.
    Then there was the ammo. I REALLY miss this. 8mm Turkish Mauser was $79/1440 rounds, Russian 7.62x39 $55/1000, Russian steel case .223 $79/1000, and even brass case, boxer primed, non corrosive 7.62x51 NATO made in Venezuela by CAVIM was $150/1000. “If you can get it to run right” does not give me any faith in the Carncono especially since it’s a bolt action. Shouldn’t take much effort at all to make a bolt action run well.

    Got the Carcano (40 bucks) carbine with no folding bayonet, got the Mosin's one is said to be a Dragoon 1900 date with the double headed eagle(80 bucks), another 1936 dated (60 bucks), the third is a carbine with folding bayonet made in China (110 bucks) because hard to find a Russian made one and the story was a green Beret brought it home from Vietnam after popping a VC who was carrying it (no paper work to prove it though). got two Turkish Mausers in the two different types in original cal, got both with the same price 120 bucks all together, but had to buy a bolt for one for a hundred with bayonet. all rifles are in good condition and not refurbished!

      Prices are a lot higher here in Hoosierville of the modern times, always expect to at least 50 percent more or higher for all firearms and ammo.

    When it comes to barrels I only care about rust, pitting, and erosion. I don't give a shit how dark the bores are. I've also have had great accuracy out of rifles with dark bores.

  • @garywillis9528
    @garywillis9528 2 роки тому

    In my experience Moison Nagants vary in quality but most are easily upgradable. You can float the barrel putting a thin shim between the action and the stock and carefully grinding out the hanguard and finished is not noticable. When buying one look at the muzzle as it was common to redrill the barrel to correct crown problems. There are aftermarket triggers but many are corrected by making sure the trigger screws are snug.

    I own tons of different surplus firearms. One of my favorites is my 6.5x50 Arisaka type 44. Unfortunately it’s been sporterized , what really sucks is that the chrysanthemum is intact. I’m sure it was done fairly early after the war and these guns weren’t really expected to be that collectible,,,who knows?? Dust cover is gone,which isn’t surprising, guess the Japanese got rid of them quickly too noisy,,turned down bolt handle, wood from the top has been made into design in the stock. Whoever did it did do a nice job but wished it was original. The person I bought it from had no idea what it was and I didn’t pay much for it. I’ve read that some were rechambered to 257 Roberts. Anyway, I still enjoy it. Really enjoy your channel Mike, definitely one of my favorites!

    IAM a country boy from Louisiana, hunt, fish and collect gun, I never was into new gun , I enjoy older guns. I didn't think much about military surplus but I found myself buying Mausers, Enfield's, krags, sks Czech v 52 and swiss arms the 1873 Winchester and 1884 trapdoor. It was easy to accumulate and trade off gun and not realize how many you had.
    The only concern I have is if we as a nation don't get a hand on gun control in the form of the damage done in our communities and school and where big business controlled reasonable access to us buying ammo. We will be in trouble should the enemy come.

    • @papovka
      @papovka 2 роки тому

      the issue is that you're looking online for sure. I do doubt you'd find a m38 for 200, yet even with gun prices being high in georgia, my local ffl just had 10+ refurbed m91/30 mosins for $400 each with a bayonet. the best thing you can do is look around at gun shops all around your area
