Today is all about thinking as musicians and not as guitarists. We are going to build a song around an old theme of mine.
Using Logic Pro X, I'm going to recreate my original theme using midi instruments. I'm going for an orchestral vibe here.
The theme has some spaces that I'm going to fill with some open low sounds. I'll use some choir sounds to recreate the harmonies, as well.
The key to this kind of instrumental tracks is to build it layer by layer.

You are such a gifted dude - as amazing a tutor as you are a musician. Thanks David!
This is what I needed to see. I hear stuff in my head which I can sing but, translating that into playable music is intimidating and not at all intuitive. You've shown me a way to begin the process. Thank you!
*Few minutes in and only the violin already sounds amazing lol*
Thanks!
Thank you so much!!!
David seems like such a nice guy. The Bob Ross of guitar.
Thanks David this is extremely useful for us guitarists who can't sing or have to compose and make our music alone. Playing guitar is one thing but being a musician is another and any help in that aspect is always a good thing.
Everyone should have a 2 octave keyboard, It makes learning so much easier and enjoyable.
I always learn something from all your videos. You're a very good teacher that makes the hard things easier to understand. I'm really impressed with the amount of videos you have put out.
thanks so much for making this video! Many videos talk a lot about music theory, but this talks more about making by musical ear. thanks a lot dude! keep up the good work!
Working on my first EP and really my first shot at producing/writing. This helped a ton. Thanks!
Instrumentals or vocals on there too
Thanks David! Since I started following you (8 months ago) I have developed as a guitarist more than I thought was possible for me. Both with my technique but also speed and to develop my ideas. You do it in a way so that even I understand how to do to come forward as a guitarist
It's almost "Traverse Town" theme from Kingdom Hearts haha. Nice!
Watch DeadMau5 struggle with this same concept on Masterclass- This was free
I have been composing and song writing for over half my life... I do the same things you share and they work, along with other cool tricks. Hmm the humming on the phone is something I figured out a long time ago, it really works!!! Specially for me, I have orchestral constantly creating new pieces of music in my head, maybe since I am AS? but the moment I sit down to play that, or attempt to write what was in my head, well all of it gets swiped out of my brain and the current session takes over. Kind of like writers block, however humming and listening to it solves this problem.
Thank you sir for helping me make instrumentals for my villain cartoon
I’d love to hear it!
Somehow whenever I try to make music I find it Easy to make Opera or Musical Play songs.
Whenever I have no inspiration .... your videos motivate me 💞🙏 to get back on track .. Thank you ❤️🙏
This was very helpful. I wanted to try to start making my own music for my videos. Thank you David
It sounds like a Zelda ost! This video was very helpful btw
This is the best you have done .. so far = thank´s a lot for great ideas !
at 3:19, directions arent really clear for converting the audio into the violin track
Great video David. I wanted to like your video. Oh wait, I have already liked it without realizing :)
at 3:18 you suddenly have the melody in MIDI. Is there a way to convert audio to MIDI or did you just write your melody in midi?
I wanna know this too ; - ;
Great info !!
Awesome video David and great concepts. Would you mind elaborating on the video 2:50 to 3:30. What key commands did you hit to sync lane 2 to lane 1 and any of the actions in between. Thanks for the help
what do you use to control your cameras? really nice set up
pretty!
Great haircut!!
I make ringtones that would definitely help me
Very helpful video thank you , and I like your music , reminds me a little of Greenslade / Caravan / Camel of my youth
I love this channel. You’re one of the best dude!!
Thank you so much Andrew!
@@Wallimann You got it mate!
Thank you this video was super helpful!
Really Nice Job on this one-
Amazing! Which software is that?
What happened after 3:17??? How did he make his vocal points instrumental???
Chord changes remind me of "Jeremy" by Pearl Jam.
This theme reminded me of Zelda soundtracks
Bernardo Branco ocarina of time vibezz
7.59 why does Candyman 1992 intro theme and resident evil code Veronica x (murderous eyes) come to mind?
Beautiful concept I love how you teach bro Hey Dave where did you get the lab set up I'm speaking about the desk and the other separate pieces
You don't believe in punctuations, do you ?
Great video. I do the same thing, but in Garageband. Do you think it's worth it to upgrade to Logic Pro X?
GarageBand is great. If you don’t really know why you’d upgrade it probably means you don’t need to. You can create definitely create professional quality music with Garageband.
Do you teach how to create instrumentals officially?. How did you come up with the original tune ?
Is there a way to do the same voice to midi conversion with Ableton, or if not what about Garageband?
Which app or software did you use?
Logic Pro 10
This was very helpful! Thanks bro!
Thanks man!
Hey man, any tips on how to develop a theme? Instrumental song need alot of variation, but that variation need to make sense by having a theme right? That's what I'm struggling with
Yes I do! Take a look at this free workshop: www.guitarplayback.com/melodicworkshop/
EASY!!!
What song making program are you using?
What app is that?
URA phenom! What's up with that T-shirt?
So you basically “borrowed” the melody from Peter Gabriel’s cover of “The Book of Love.” 🤦🏻♂️
Funny, I tried to make a melody based on the one that David sang, and ended up with Piano Man. =D
That is Garage band…
It is!
