As a composer myself, I can really relate to this amazing video. The way you try bashing some notes, explore interesting ideas, reject boring ones. With practice, you eventually start to see things, which speeds up the process a lot. Great video! Hope it inspires people to just go out there and create music!

Kudos from across the pond!
As someone who does pretend to be one, I'm not that good lol, that exact fascination got me hooked. It got me hooked on writing graffiti as a kid, and making music as an adult. 24:15 to me this illustrates how important instrumentation is to the melody. The horns give the same tune a Completely different feel, and it really comes alive. The same is true with vocals too, I could sing "Shape of You" and it would not be the iconic melody that it is when Ed Sheeran sings it. Melody and instrumentation have to be considered together!

Maybe a bit late answer but one nonetheless. Just.. do it. Just keep on doing it. Also, it does not matter if 9 times out of 10 you fail, when you do succeed, it's enough. But you just need to keep on grinding and failing and sometimes you get something good. Just don't get stuck into the times you failed, that just has to happen, even most of the time you try to create something. And when you manage to create something good... nothing has changed. Next time you try, you'll probably still fail most of the time. But still sometimes you make something good.
Really enjoyed this. I'm a guitar player and my take away was, start with a melody for voice (your right hand on keyboard) and then find variations for accompanying guitar chord progression (your left hand on keyboard). My favorite melody writing trick (which I noticed I'm using all the time in retrospect) is to repeat the same phrase (as-is or transposed, some times with a bit of variation) over different harmony each time. The chord changes can be pretty bold; the bolder, the better, in fact. The repeating melody will hold the harmony together.
@@samanthabramley9162 I wish you were right. Pop music repeats the same melody all right, but it normally also repeats the same harmony (that everybody else uses). There are, of course, honorable exceptions to the rule.
In the last 10 years, I was composed over 3.5k tracks. They have all been released. I have no musical education and I am not contaminated by any rules. But today I learned something. Thank you.
I feel the tune ends on such a crescendo, I wish Guy continued on developing that... Really sounds like an amazing film score piece on a big climax there.
Guy is indeed movie score composer ( The Invincible Iron Man, Dr. Strange, Ultimate Avengers, etc...). Now I see he's also a great teacher...Love this Guy.
A drummer who stumbled upon your channel during lockdown and now plays bass and is also learning guitar. Thanks for the inspiration and I do believe that Date Sandwiches are the finest biscuits in captivity.
This is lovely and very helpful. One technique I have found useful is to actually start on a chord different than the tonic ( I) and extended your progression and melody as long as you can before you resolve it to the I chord. then when you actually do resolve it, this move has more impact. But the same tips on shape, repetition and variation still apply
For some reason the first time I stopped watching the video before the end and I did not see that coming! That was a really nice surprise, hearing the melody in that context. Thank you Guy, very inspiring!

I think it’s harder to find a drum pattern if you start with the melody. It reminds me of that Kanye video where he had to get timbaland to help him with the drums.
Thank you so much for making this video! I've played piano and percussion for over 20 years. I've learned tons about ear training and theory lessons and chord progressions over all that time, and I've made song arrangements, but I never managed to compose anything original. I could never seem to come up with melodies I liked. Your explanation of rhythm and variations on a pattern was a total breakthrough breakthrough for me. "Start with a rhythm" and "make variations on a pattern" seem so obvious in retrospect (especially as a percussionist, heh) but somehow, through all the lessons on theory, rhythm and repetition had never once come up. With that part of composition cracked, everything came together and I've been having so much fun composing little pieces over the last month. Thank you so much for putting the 'obvious' right up front!
re: Imperial March rhythm Perhaps THE MOST important part of the Imperial March is not even in the melody, but in the non-stop «quarter, eighth-triplet eighth-triplet triplet-eighth» in the background. In fact, as Cory from 12Tone pointed out, even played on a woodblock that rhythm is entirely recognisable as the Imperial March.
Thank you so much for your video posting. I must admit I had trouble following you but found your synopsis really helpful. When I was young I used to write little songs, as you would say, in “My own Style”, but haven’t written much in years. Now that I’m a senior citizen, I seem to have more time, but I have lost my ability to both sing and write…. Thankfully that hasn’t stopped me from purchasing a little keyboard this week because I have a strong desire to write a song… Thank you so much for posting. I found your video very funny, interesting and informative, And for me it’s taken a little bit of the fear away… Oh and by the way it’s lemon cream biscuits for me😊
The most universal part of that tutorial, except the common universatility of music, was shown up at 10:40 of this video when you couldn't break the wrapping of your bisquit. That probably appears all over the world with the same intensity you demonstrated. To open today's wrappings is really a special task!
thank you! this is actually GREAT melody advise, i feel like you actually gave a solid techniche in a structured way, there are 100000 videos and lessons and paid courses on melody writing that they just give you very structured but vague things , and theres the other extreme where they say "it just comes to you", i think yours is the best video i have found.
Why did my music gcse never ever teach me this, they were more interested in avant garde atonal crap. Makes me so angy. I have to admit it Guy I am a piano masher, just plonking on the piano till it sounds right. I thank you for putting this out there. I did learn it the long way round on your course, but my sunglasses of doubt has held me back. I need more chocolate malted milks to get me going. Also love the Garibaldis of Fire Outro.....
You write and play what you listen to, practice, and like. But you probably shouldn't blame anyone for your musical education unless they forced you stop listening to music you like. 0nce you know what chords are being playing just by hearing them, you can write what you hear in your head. Discovering melodies and progressions via improvisation (masher) can work as an entry point into a composition, but once you've discovered a motif or harmonic structure by chance, you have to build upon that depending on what your ears hears, and where you want it to go. If your create a song entirely by chance, well that is essentially avant garde. Everyone has doubt on occasion. Sting's case of composer's block is well known. But like all creative processes, you need to write everyday, whether you're inspired or not. It's a process that requires dedication. ua-cam.com/video/oy25A7vnigg/v-deo.html

23:48 - YES! i had been waiting for this from the first Vangelis reference :D
I’m a choir teacher that is trying to write melody after many years of studying music. I’ve always been scared to write something for fear of my own judgement. It’s silly really but this video really inspired me.
It's great to see your creative process. Being a process of creation, the sheer number of angles one has to examine to find that melody is sometimes daunting, but I 100% agree that this particular melody being created is the composer acting as filter to some aspect of life - whether it is a take on romance, or heartbreak or war or peace or whatever. It is a composer's view especially at that particular point in time. So then it always stands to reason that a melody or theme I discard today, might work at another point in time. Everyone has a story, and everyone has a song of their very own. For some they might never be published, and for some it might create a living and a legacy. But make sure your story and your song sees the light of day. Search for it - it is out there. Also - I love the reference to Pirates of the Caribbean! But that's just my own proclivities... And Ginger biscuits for the win 😁 (I have nothing to sell anyone, but your videos inspire me. Thanks!)
I have been looking at videos on songwriting and this is by far the best I have seen, subscribed and will definitely share this hidden gem. We need more people like this in the world!!
This is soooooo educational in many ways! And I had a lot of laughs with this as well. Interesting tips, but it's not the way I write tunes at all. My secret? (mumble mumble mumble) Seriously, there's an angel that whispers beautiful lyrics in my ear, and I just have to match the words with the chords that tell the 'story' right. 💚

This is basically how about 50% of pop music works.
@@samanthabramley9162 I wish you were right. Pop music repeats the same melody all right, but it normally also repeats the same harmony (that everybody else uses). There are, of course, honorable exceptions to the rule.
This guy is what happens when a British person has the energy of an American
Thanks for showing the chords as text on the screen. Made it allot easier to follow.
The composition at the end should definitely be called “Biscuits of Creativity.”
In the last 10 years, I was composed over 3.5k tracks. They have all been released. I have no musical education and I am not contaminated by any rules. But today I learned something. Thank you.
Guy is the music teacher which we all wish we had! He is so infectious.
GUY! you rock, so glad I found your channel!
This has absolutely made my day! Very helpful, I will give this a try for a song I am working on.
Loved the ending of this too! 😁
Not only your lesson is valuable to me but also I feel the camerawork of your videos is very nice. It is so comfortable to watch.
Bruh this guy hasn't even gotten to the teaching part and I'm already loving this video 😂😂💙💙 learning has never been more fun
A drummer who stumbled upon your channel during lockdown and now plays bass and is also learning guitar. Thanks for the inspiration and I do believe that Date Sandwiches are the finest biscuits in captivity.
"...and that's the secret to writing a great tune" :D love this Guy
Disliked the video for not disclosing the secret😂
We are blessed to have you as our music teacher 💞🎶🌟
This is lovely and very helpful. One technique I have found useful is to actually start on a chord different than the tonic ( I) and extended your progression and melody as long as you can before you resolve it to the I chord. then when you actually do resolve it, this move has more impact. But the same tips on shape, repetition and variation still apply
Well said
Bro in 10 minutes I was able to come up with something good
Thank you 😭
Love your videos! :D
10:58 - 11:10 The clearest statement Guy ever made .. Help .. my stomach hurt after laughing
A master never gives away their secrets.. clearly
Its a very simple joke but he delivered it pretty well.
@@chrismeyersproductions 😂😂😂
Clearly a memorable moment.
Same! 😂
Maybe the biscuits are a metaphor for weed
🤫
That would explain his whole persona.
No. Drugs only hinder your workability.
@@user-ot4rc9jh8e I strongly disagree. Art and drugs go hand and hand in history. Ex. Scott Storch
lol that is what i thought. everyone has their own 'biscuits'
For some reason the first time I stopped watching the video before the end and I did not see that coming! That was a really nice surprise, hearing the melody in that context. Thank you Guy, very inspiring!

Those of us with Ableton Live Suite can use a built-in conversion tool that turns an audio recording into midi. Simply HUM into the microphone whilst recording and when you're done, right-click on the recording in the track lane and convert harmony/melody to midi

Ok.
I bought it so I can learn something new. Thanks Guy!
Hummmm Ah ah yes sir re Bob, Hummmm ah ah its all "free" ha !!.
Hummmm ah ah its all me now ;)) (repeat).........
P.S. I especially like the part were you tell us the"Secret" with a mumbling mouth of bisket !!! 😐 >>>> ouch um...... Thanks????
I like how you can see him focusing and just playing what he thinks off, it's inspiring and kinda motivating tbh :)
Fantastic energy, creative presentation and genuinely useful content. This is my new favourite music sub
my biggest tip is make something you like weather it be a drum pattern or bass line just make something and build on top of it
I think it’s harder to find a drum pattern if you start with the melody.
Thank you so much for putting the 'obvious' right up front!
re: Imperial March rhythm
Perhaps THE MOST important part of the Imperial March is not even in the melody, but in the non-stop «quarter, eighth-triplet eighth-triplet triplet-eighth» in the background.
Thankfully that hasn’t stopped me from purchasing a little keyboard this week because I have a strong desire to write a song…
Thank you so much for posting. I found your video very funny, interesting and informative, And for me it’s taken a little bit of the fear away… Oh and by the way it’s lemon cream biscuits for me😊
i accidentally watched the into on mute and thought I was watching the start of a Top Gear episode hahaha
He is the Jeremy Clarkson of music lol
Because that was GCSE, not School of Music or Conservatory. They don't teach composition formally at that level, not that I'm aware of.
You're our Champ Guy!
Thanks Guy for all your inspiration and humor
I love how engaging you are, always keeps me interested and gives me a good laugh while learning 🔥

And Ginger biscuits for the win 😁
(I have nothing to sell anyone, but your videos inspire me. Thanks!)
Found this channel over Christmas 2021 and New Year 2022. Thank you so much for the content and the laughs. You Sir are a true gentleman!
I have been looking at videos on songwriting and this is by far the best I have seen, subscribed and will definitely share this hidden gem.
We need more people like this in the world!!
So I just subscribed you because you're the first guy explaining melodies with a mouth full of cookies. You're so sympathic! :D
You might want to blur the moment at 3'57" - we can see some of your card details!
Additionally, blur is still recoverable. Hopefully that is some dummy/expired card since he did put it in front of the camera.
@ It probably is now :)
I just ordered a new music studio with his card LOL

"you are not my son, or whateva" I love this guy already. Just found out about him. 😂
This was fun to watch while actually learning something!! Thank you :D
You are fast becoming my favourite musical uncle! Love your art and your antics; great teaching style! Thank you Guy.
Guy just followed me back on LinkedIn and I couldn’t be happier 😂
it's 12am but now i feel like i need to stay up and write a melody
This is soooooo educational in many ways! And I had a lot of laughs with this as well.
Interesting tips, but it's not the way I write tunes at all. My secret? (mumble mumble mumble)
Seriously, there's an angel that whispers beautiful lyrics in my ear, and I just have to match the words with the chords that tell the 'story' right. 💚
the absolute best video I've ever watched, the humor kept me concentrating and learnt so much at the same time
Your enthusiasm is always infectious. Loved the part about rhythm being just as important with Darth Vader theme.
