Thank you, extremely helpful
@jackson sprouse Sure. It happens frequently when you're writing in a minor key.
Wonderful.
could you make one of those on "how to write rock chord progressions" ?
Thanks for this amazing video.
I watch your videos as much as possible.
Now I have to start writing chords and I feel so stupid.
How do I make my mixes sound better?
Do u have videos on protools?
Logic? U have a great way of teaching.

I cant thank you enough for not having a useless intro
I know what you mean. I hate intros.
Im constantly second guessing myself on intros. I want to keep things quick but it's important to frame the videos content accurately... glad you thought this was well paced :)
Signals Music Studio a logo/branding is never a bad thing, it's the useless chatter in the beginning mostly, and you go straight to the point
Seconded. I'm on Hughes Net (not by choice) so useless intros can take hours to load, if you catch my drift.

*Music Theory in a nutshell*
Life in a nutshell.
I find it a lot more helpful to look at the theory as descriptive rather than normative, meaning there aren't rules so much as there are descriptions of what generally works; this prevents me from getting trapped in rigid forms of thinking, while still finding the "rules" useful as guides.
That's in life too
Man combined with sound as it's all vibration fools.
I have made this laws so you'll be childish and just brake the rules.
And there are of course also rules for breaking the rules for breaking the rules

I like what you said: "you can't rely on emotions", specially on days when "following your heart" is the motto. Better to have an informed mind on how things work, then emotions will safely follow.
Agreed!
Its similar to writing, learn the vocabulary, grammar and techniques so that you can express emotions - otherwise your like a baby that doesn't know how to talk yet!
@@laurant4282 you stole the words out of my mouth
@@laurant4282 accurate analogy
I truly wish I could get that through a friend's head.
A really good guitarist once told him decades ago that he "just kind of lets it flow..".
My friend took that to mean "I don't have to learn anything"
Once in a while he's in key, but more often that not he just makes noise.
Thinks it's all good.
Wonders why nobody wants to play with him.
The Bob Ross of guitar lessons. Great job, ton of info. Thanks.
might be my favorite compliment ever. thank you :)
Haha! Too funny
Bob Ross just smiled.
You should check out Chords of Orion for an even stronger Bob Ross vibe of guitar lessons!
Not sure that's really a compliment. Welcome to songwriting that's the equivalent of Bob's repetitive paintings!
right side of the screen where you visually explain what you're saying is the best thing ever. thank you
whole this video is sooooo great! thank you Jake for sharing your knowledge with us!
I agree , can't beat a chart some youtubers don't do that , that's when I turn off
I've learned some music theory in my past. Never was it explained in such a pragmatic, relevant way. Kudos.
This is literally the perfect exercise for me at my level of chord progressions and theory knowledge. I didn't realize it could be that simple to write your own progression. I really feel that this is what I needed to transition to my next level of playing. Thanks a lot!
This is the most important UA-cam video I've ever watched.
Why not become a talk show host? You have a voice meant for radio.
Haha i know right. I want hear him say Welcome to 98.9 Radio or something
I think he also has face meant for radio.

ikr !
@GuantanaMoe wooooahh you're right!
My bandmate and I get so mad because sometimes we sit down and things just happen perfectly but other times we get absolutely nowhere. This channel is amazing not only in teaching but also reminding that sometimes persistence is the biggest key
You can change keys for the chorus too. Or the bridge. That works sometimes. The Beatles do that a lot. Then there's learning how to solo over unusual chord progressions and that's fun. Shifting your mode to fit the key changes makes for some really interesting stuff.
Holy christ, literally the keys to the beginner song writing kingdom, thank you dude.
I'm having so many ah-ha moments and I've only seen like 3 of your videos so far. You the man!
You definitely should keep watching his videos. I've seen many of them, and have a lot more to go. This is the greatest music theory channel on the internet, HANDS DOWN!!! I get inspired just from watching his videos. It helps that he has a nice sounding, clean distortion on his guitar. :)
I read your comment and consider subscribing now
I love the ah-ha moments they come randomly and they really hit you hard make you take a step back look around and empty room and smile :)
I believe that the more you play with basics like this, the more magic moments you'll have.
Yea I definitely feel that it helps make it more natural and easier in our minds to flow outwardly in a confident manner
Writing riffs comes first, arranging songs comes later. Thanks man, you never disappoint.

I've been playing for 30 y now, and its hard as shit to try and teach my friend this basic , fundamental stuff. This guy does an absolutely amazing job teaching this.
2000+ comments of praise-I feel the same! So glad I found you!! I don’t play guitar, but your music theory and way of explaining is very thorough and organized-it helps a lot with piano too. I love watching all your videos! Thanks sooo much and take care!!! 🤙🎹🤙
You are a great teacher, you’re a natural at explaining your tutorials. I go back to your videos to recollect the music theory I know and you break it down with ease to understand and also instill the confidence with your personality. Thank you!
Your process in teaching and infographics improves with each video. Over time you are becoming a boon to music / song writing by equipping me and others with more and more practical music tools and song analysis with both what is being played, and how it is played with your holistic understanding of production.
You are a master of your craft, and I learned so much about chords, I actually learn so much about your videos. It infers you learn a lot too in the process of making these, I hope you continue to progress.

Dude your videos help me so much. Thank you man. Love and respect.
Never would I have ever thought I would get a guitar lesson form John Mulaney
Its Justin Looong
I've played. I've recorded. I've never had a lesson in my life. I'm that guy. And I appreciate shit like this. It's like marriage counselling between me and my guitar. Cheers man!
I'm in music theory and this is literally reinforcing what I've already learn in class. Thanks bro.
same!
This fucking guy just blew my fucking mind
You're a good dude man. I really like how honest and straightforward you are with this lesson.
I love when someone teaches something they have figured out ! They teach it with this clarity that you can tell when someone gets it ! And you sir get it ! And it shows. Thanks for the lesson ! Def went from knowing nothing to a rookie like that ! Nice power up moment there.
Although I study chords, I select final chords by the sound and how they highlight the melody, and the feel of the melody. And sometimes instead of just repeating the same chords for a repeated phrase, one simple tweak will give the melody a more emotional feel, especially for love songs. So in the end, it is the sound, the feel, the compliment to the melody and the lyrics. It take a lot of work.
Its crazy how good these videos are. You really take the extra step to take advantage of the fact you're making a video and not just teaching a lesson, the visual aids and the pacing of it all is just great and you're hitting subjects that other guitar teachers don't bother about.
He’s also hitting subjects that many others make more confusing.
This is one of the best teachers on youtube for music. Incredible how he brings it across so clear and easy. This is a guy that actually can teach.
Just watched this. Been playing for 44 years. Thank you. I immediately implied this lesson and chills up my spine for chord progressions.
Very grateful for your excellent lessons.
Man, you don’t know how inspired and happy I feel right now. Thank you for making this video, you explained everything so clearly in less than 15 minutes. 🙏🏽
+1
Yes. Us rhythm guitarist really need videos like this
Well, if the guitar/music instructor thing doesn't work out (it is and will continue I'm sure), radio is waiting for you. Voice is ready made for radio, or television for that matter. On top of that, the communication is extremely clear and concise. No stumbling and fumbling around. Very impressive. Just an honest observation. Great lesson. Thank you for putting this together and for sharing it with us songwriters. Much appreciated!
Thx Jake (Signals Music Studio.) For years I was stuck and going nowhere with my music development. With my limited talent, I've been fiddling on the guitar, synth piano and writing songs (that no one hears) for ever. There are many on youtube that provide help, but I could never wholy get it. I found your chanell and the heavens suddenly aligned. Soul destroying disappointment no more. Thx thx thx 😊😁
You deserve a medal for easisest to understand video ever. Thank you!
music theory has eluded me forever (I've been playing guitar for 24 yrs) and this little video opened up my eyes. THANK YOU! also, almost 1 million views B)
I’ve been trying to learn music theory on my own and often times I get really distracted. But your video was straight to the point, allowed me to pause and take notes, and went at the perfect pace. You weren’t condescending or know it all, you just were what a teacher should be, precise and to the point. Thanks for this video, I really appreciate it.
Probably the best and easiest to grasp video on this subject on UA-cam.
You might be one of the best music instructors on the web, keep up the great teaching!
That f#half diminished to g is one of the best things I've heard in a long time at 6:34
@Jim Baker that is very true, I really should listen to more jazz
this is one of the best videos on YT... I don't understand how you don't have 1 million subscribers
Your channel is the only channel that makes music theory simple enough to understand.
All of my questions are getting an answer without going into a complicated explanation from my music peers & teachers.
thank you and keep up the amazing videos
youtube teachers are a certain breed of special. The good ones like yourself present information and how to’s very simply and easy to understand in minutes. Thank you for helping us amateurs out.
I'm just getting back into playing guitar after a long absence and decided to learn properly. A friend of mine is a singer song writer and inspired me to have a go but I've been having real trouble making anything sound right, this is exactly what I needed. Thank you!
5:39 Congratulations, you've just written your first Christian rock song!
Sounds like 'Big Me', by the Foo Fighters.
@@lydin9678 just what I was thinking!
Well he wrote Fuck Her Gently first lol
😂😂😂😂😂
Sounds like the first 1,000 to me lol
Ive never heard of secondary dominant chords before but I am excited to learn . Theory doesn't scare me or bore me anymore because I recognize that it is a tool/ gateway that I can use to become a more diverse and accomplished guitar player.
I love the fact that Bowzer is teaching me how to write music. That makes my day.
After years of playing, Im watching your videos, taking notes and actually learning something, feels great thank you! Please make a part 2 for minor chords :)
This is the very most helpful bit of musical theory on music theory.
You just made it doable. Thank you. I'm not worried about simple and basic. Tons of famous songs are just a few chords strung together.
I never think about chord progressions. The melody just comes and I catch it.
I really like your voice.
Hey Jake... For your next video, could you build a time machine, travel 15 years back into the past, and then give me lessons? I would be a much better guitarist today if I had you teaching me from the beginning!!! All joking aside, your videos are awesome and your teaching method is extraordinary. Keep up the good work!
I'm third.
1972, when I started, (I was 9) would have been perfect for me. Keep up the great work, Jake. 👍🏻

Best channel I've found in 2019. Thanks for posting this.
Been lurking on your channel for a while; subscribing now. This is gold! Thank you so much 😊
Hi Jake, you have the best channel out there for music theory by such a long way. Really great content and really appreciated. I'll be joing your patreon, so we'll deserved. Keep em coming.
I feel like Obama is teaching me guitar lessons and I quite like it. Just needs to say "folks" a bit more
Dont forget the ole' Okie Doke!
Thank you. I can't unhear that now.

This was literally the most helpful video I've ever watched on UA-cam, thank u
This is simply one of the best video tutorials ever found on youtube. THANKS
I know this video is 5yrs old but I've just found it today and I got to say, it's been a "eureka!" moment for me. Thank you!
I love your videos :) especially your advance stuff, you explain things well enough so that everyone understands.
This is what I needed to progress past mimicking other songs, I’ve had a tough time understanding how to make my own cord progressions and this video has finally lit the lightbulb for me thank you so much, I’m going to subscribe and binge all the videos I can from your channel, I can’t thank you enough
Such a good video, now that it's been explained so simply but with such clarity, I wonder why I have not realised these progressions before. Thank you.
Brilliantly simple. The restriction to four chords does cut out some options - but heck - it works!
Very helpful for anyone who might not have done too much of this stuff.
I write songs starting with the 6th Chord...Then go to The 6th Chord...Then I finish with the 6th Chord. chord progression is 6-6-6
Congratulations, you have summoned a demon
Absolutely diabolical chord progression!

Your videos are very helpful. Thank you for making them available. I've learned a lot from them and you are a great teacher.
Hands down the best online guitar teacher I've seen.
I'm in that kind of situation, when I know and understand everything you're talking about, but it gives me some pleasure, this enthusiasm of yours, and the way you explain the stuff. You sir, doing a great job, I thank you for that!
I'm glad you showed that you have a video on diminished chords! Thanks. Great video!
This is the best 12 minutes I have spent in a long time! I know quite a bit of theory and can play ok but writing stuff normally fell more to luck for me but this video just brought all my theory into awesome practice! Thanks very much saved me many many hours of future frustrations :)
you saved me. all these years ive been living under a rock. now i can see light. thank you. my life will be better now. /srs
Great teachers like you and technology like youtube will literally save the world! Love it
Amazing lesson*, really clear and straight to the point, thank you sir.
I think that the hardest part of songwriting is making a song that is able to be dynamic but just enough to keep casual listeners as well as musicians interested in your music. For example most of us listen to Dream theater for their brilliant songwriting and how dynamic the music is but a lot of people that are not music enthusiasts get overwhelmed by music that has many changes.
I personally love when a song has many dimensions and doesn't stick to one riff or rythm.
I agree 100%. Variety and contrast is what makes things interesting. I think the best music is the stuff that might seem simple on the outside, but is ridiculously complicated on the inside (stuff like my beatles / beach boys video). I did literally spend years thinking I couldn't make music though, just because I didn't know how to string diatonic chords together. A lot of musicians just wanna write 4 chord music, and thats fine- I just want to make it easier for them to do it!
I personally love it when a song sticks to one riff or rhythm! There are so many subtle differences that add dimension while preserving the central motif. It's also a great exercise in songwriting to limit yourself in that way, forcing other creative muscles to work.
dude i agree so much
I dont think I've written a song in years now that hasn't at minimum had non-diatonic notes in it or a complete key change for certain areas. I might challenge myself today to do that though
Mr. Metalhorse Literally my type of best friend
You are the best teacher ever!! Focused, precise, get to the point, and very clear. Thank you for this 🙏✨
Your voice is so comforting
You could teach me anything.
Where have you been all my unteachable life? o_O
great lesson for beginners thanks
Can I "Thumbs Up" this more than once... Jake, this was/is absolute GOLD to me!!! Understanding the fact of completing a progression on the 4 or 5 helps turn the progression back around...? Is that all??? That was literally one of the missing pieces I could never find or understand. I cannot thank you enough for sharing your knowledge with us! And when you added that G Progression to keys, it sounded excellent! And your delivery on this whole thing is just excellent!
Number one intro lesson to songwriting right here. Clear, concise, comprehensive, yet to the point. 10/10 👌
9:11 when I have a good chord progression in place I get inspired to write lead lines and melodies and lyrics and the rest of the music even if the chord progression itself wasnt inspired to begin with. Thanks so much for this video. I loved it and am going to go write something now :)
Hey man, I love the way you explain things and I have learned quite a bit from your channel. Do you think at some point in the future you could make a video outlining chord theory be it how all chords are constructed, how they relate to parent scales, and why they are called what they are? I've been looking for good videos to clear this up for me but I haven't been having much luck.
You don't have to, It's just an idea that I'm sure would help out a lot of people :)
Thanks for the nice words! I do outline part of that process in the 2nd half of my video on the Lydian scale... I do intend on making a video where I talk about figuring out the chords of ANY scale/mode, but I have so many video ideas, it's a battle for which one gets made first!
been looking for videos like this for a while. this is the best one.
I just wanna say i have been looking forever for a channel that explains it just like you have, finally someone i can learn from thank you so much
Damn, i'm really glad i found this vid, subscribed...
OMG, thanks a billion for this awesome chords /music making tutorial
I love how you don't make us feel we can't do anything. You make us feel anything is possible ❤️
probably the most informative theory for songwriting content creator on youtube! thanks man, good work
Thank you, I thought I’d have a go at song writing and I was like ‘um how do people do this’ now I have some idea of what to do!
that chord progression in C reminds me of David Gilmour´s song called Smile, its a beatiful song
Reminded me of "Runaway Train" as well.

This was such an informative and easy to follow video. I still have questions but you've answered so many and left me with recommendations at the end of what to look into next.
Thank you for posting this, you've really shed some light on how to look at and understand music a little more!
This guy explains really well. I have watched couple of his vids here on YT, it's really explanatory and helpful
Would love to have a full course from you! You're very good at explaining complicated topics and make them easy to understand! Did you consider creating a full guitar course and offer it online for a reasonable price? Thanks in advance.

Dude you sound amazing! Do you have a video on borrowed chords or starting not from I but on different note for the progression?
hang tight for a few days :)
Fantastic! Nicely explained with great clarity!
Within 4 minutes into the video I have learnt more than I learn in some 1 hour video about chord changes. Very precise and to the point
You are an awesome teacher👍👍👍
