That one dude has a lovely tone on the soprano sax!
hello samurai! nice to see that worlds collide. you have a fantastic channel.
Thanks brotha!
Was just about to say the same - beautifully expressive playing.
I'll jump on this bandwagon as well. Your content is awesome Samurai!
Thanks, I'm glad you like it!
Props to that last guy who just said, "Screw it, metal is life." That was amazing.
It was so great
I shed a tear when I heard it turn around. It was fantastic
I almost clicked to another video thinking it was over and then bam time for metal!
Didn't see it coming at all. Was really expecting Reggae.

the first guy who added lyrics (who was singing along to a taylor acoustic guitar) sounded so good!! i loved the lyrics, too
Oh hey, yeah, that guy was awesome! Go, that guy!
I also loved ukelele girl who wrote lyrics.
oxymoron0o Yes! I wish I could find their submissions to add to the playlist, they were two of my favorites.
I know! It reminded me of I fight dragons and it made me so nostalgic and I loved it so much!
what's his name???
Why does this video make me cry? Because people making music together is one of the most beautiful things in the world.
ikr!?
When you mentally finish the melody by yourself, it feels wrong to hear other people play the song differently.
Nothing to do with your comment, I just love Kaytranada.

Gosh sometimes I wished I could transpose the symphony that can come out of my head if I had any interest in writing partitions :>

Rob Scallon do I smell a collab coming?
I'm kinda disappointed that 1.) you didn't submit anything and 2.) if you did, that you weren't featured. Oh well, maybe next time, huh?
Didn't expect this dude to be here too. This video needs more ducks.

you should do a vid like this

I'm loving this diving into music style of video. It's really helping me learn a lot about how music comes together and is making me super stoked about getting back into learning the guitar.
This is an amazing channel, WELL DONE! I really love the way you both share your talent and inspire/teach your community.
poorlyfound I'm also trying to get back into guitar so I was wondering how you're practicing (gonna practice) did you hire a tutor, youtube vids something else?
The one at 7:59 has to be my favorite. Her voice is just so vibey and calming. Its something you could feel but also just dance around to.
I know it's been three years but that's Sidney Gish, you should totally listen to her music, very dancy
This is really interesting. When I'm writing a melody it often feels like there's only one obvious solution, but you've shown here that everybody has their own unique solution - and that they're all valid! It's like each person's song is a little package of their own consciousness....
Everything about this video is just absolutely amazing! My goodness, the dedication and time this must have taken! Fantastic!
Agreed! This is nuts.

lol the girl at the end
It's really nice to see the way you addressed this clinically and statistically. Also really nice to see the community united in these submissions!
Guy with tenor/soprano sax and girl with melodica. You both are amazing!

the music world is beautiful, why did I spend my 7 years in architecture:(
Sam Zheng you can start at any time! :)
Architecture is beautiful! And you can do music too :)
I found so much possibilities in music than architecture as each building design requires justification. Whereas musicain can have the total control over the music. Even the song is bad, at least you can consume the product that you created straight after. Architecture taught me not affraid of creating things and improve on it. Music is probably the same but more freedom on the process of creating.
Never too late!

Jesus, some incredible Talent in this video. A lot of those melodies sounded like sitcom-intros to me for some reason.
I really enjoyed this, thanks for making it!
TMC (Topgame Media Crew) I think it's probably that Picardy 3rd coming in. I feel that it's most commonly used at the end of the theme songs for such shows. If you have a look around you could prove me right/wrong :)
I really loved all this. I had to be a spectator, since I unfortunately have no musical talent or skill to contribute, but I love seeing everyone able to participate, with you showcasing everything. Reminded me a lot of the "We Go Together" song you made with everyone.

As a music producer, I find this video absolutely fascinating...interesting to see what people come up with, and in what patterns. The findings here say a lot about what's being made by musicians of all styles, from pop to eclectic, and as to what people listen to and let influence them.

Have you ever heard about the Schillinger system? It's basically a set of 'rules' for writing music, a lot of which stem from Maths and numeric sequences. I learnt about it at university, as I was taught by one of the leading acedemics on the subject (Jeremy Arden, he's on the Schillinger system Wikipedia). One of the things I've always taken from it specifically was a certain approach to melody writing regarding phrasing which is pretty much perfectly exampled by the girl at 4:00. Your initial melody follows the rules as far as phrase, followed by a variation on the phrase (similar phrase, overall higher pitch), and then she embellished it with an expansion (I might be a little off the mark with wording, it's been a while since I've explained it, I've just been using it without telling people >.>) which is essentially filling up the bars with a whole bunch of notes that often go higher than the original phrase. Finally she came to a cadence which finished off the melody at a satisfying end.
Naturally not all music follows this rule (kudos to Melodica girl, that was some intense re-working), but if you're stuck on a melody I find it so useful to use his teachings. I'd highly recommend the book with foreward by Jeremy Arden if you're interested (The Schillinger System of Musical Composition Vol1&2, though Vol1 is a very useful book in its own right).
***** Everyone who knew SOAD in our class spotted it! Did you go Herts too?

Hey Andrew, this is a really cool video, and I just found your channel because of it! I love the idea of this experiment, but I have one nitpick with your theory on the subject of the picardy third. Your description of it is correct, but what you play isn't really a picardy third. I would say it is more of a modulation or a secondary dominant. A picardy third occurs when you are pretty solidly in a minor key, so you really expect the cadence to be on a minor chord. The song starts with a C major chord, and pretty solidly seems to be in C major. Your final chords are even the classic IV->V->I (F to G to C) progression. For it to be a picardy third, it would be in C MINOR and then when you do F->G it would then go to C MAJOR unexpectedly. Instead, you start in a major key, and then finish with an unexpected A major chord. This is the major 6th chord in C major, not what a picardy third would be: a major tonic when a minor is expected. I would say it is more of a secondary dominant to modulate to D major, or a type of deceptive cadence where you expect it to go to the tonic C chord but it goes to the A (VI) chord instead. You are certainly raising the third of the chord from what is in the key (C->C#) and it does sound cool, but I wouldn't call it a picardy third. Just my two cents!
This is my understanding of the Picardy Third" as well.
The oboe one and the girl right before them at around 4:00 were so good, in my opinion! They seemed to fit what the hypothetical "song" was trying to do the best.

13:22 Cadence Hira (melodica girl)
I really want to know who melodica girl is her music was so interesting
Oh my bad i found her its Cadence Hira
This was so awesome, and it was wonderful seeing people around the globe contributing.
Fascinating study, and a particularly fab entry from the jazz melodica at the end. I had a busy week, so didn't record a submission, but for the record my first instinct was to continue with the same three-note stepwise sequence rising from the last note of the supplied melody as you said five other people continued with. So call it six! :)
It's just occurred to me that that's because it's "Some Day My Prince Will Come" from Disney's Snow White. Dang. It's so tough not to write in borrowed fragments!!!!
Is the prince in that movie called Tom? If so....... :0
I usually really hate watching videos that are over six minutes long but this video is an exception whoa
6:45 exactly what I started humming right after you asked what was next. I don’t want to sound like I’m including myself in any special group, but I can’t quite shake the feeling this is some kind of synesthesia (perceiving the melody as a story)
No one is tagging the perfection at 3:59 so I guess I will
This is why I love musicians who love to be creative and emotionally expressive. I am touched by the love.
Wow, you really broke that shit down like a student who had to do a dissertation on song writing. Great job!
Wow this video felt meaningful actually
7:58 sounds like something out of Steven Universe
get her on the show now
Omg yessssas

This is sooo clever!
I ve said it in previouz comments on another vid!!!
Top marks on your upcoming of
1- the concpt of the experiment
2- the analysis of the results
3- your use of wording and descriptions of those results
4- your synthesis of all those results!
5- it makes so much sense and ... i can only admire
5a- the way your brain works
5b- the way you inspire strangers to come up with ´ART'

This videos shows how great humans are in essence. So much love and compassion put in a melody. Very moving
This is one of the most interesting videos I have seen in a long time. Happy that someone makes such videos!
Where can I find the guy at 5:09? That one's my favorite and it sounds like something I'd listen to.
sophisacat :3 .
sophisacat :3 i want to know too! he sounds so good
sophisacat :3 I looked through the description, he's called Devon Prontack, there isn't that much that I found of him though, only one song and a couple UA-cam vids, here's his SoundCloud:
soundcloud.com/devonprontack
Do you know the name of the song he is singing? its too good!!
Anyone great at guitar know what is the term for that strumming/pluck pattern or method he used? Sounded much better than strumming alone.
8:34 this can be in a studio ghibli film.

6:50 aw i'm flattered. finished it myself while watching this video and I also happened to start it like that.
i cant think of anything me too! I got the chills when I got to that part. Guess we were late to the party, but still part of that group of people. Have you ever heard of synesthesia?
Who was that in the second to last piece? That jazz theme was amazingly well written! That bass and out of scale notes on the piano are so PERFECT!
Hi that was me. Thanks :D
I subscribed to you. But there is just one video =(
Yeah. More vids please :C
Cadence Hira it was amazing and kinda sounded like something out of Pokémon (no offence)
My girlfriend looks over at what I'm watching just now at goes "Look at his eyebrows!!! They're isosceles triangles!!!!"
Ahahahahahaha
But... they’re scalene...
....but tbh, I think they look like that black rabbit in watership downs.
Those scalene triangles
Ridiculous. Could not listen such a useful information with the Castlevania bat-brows.
Love yer stuff mate but... :)
Sorry, man. Couldn't watch your very well made video nor listen to all those cool submissions over THOSE FLEEK-ASS EYBROWS!
I actually really liked those two from 4:36 onwards, sounded very upbeat and happy ^^
Andrew, I think one of the reasons why a lot of people (myself included) used the E, F, G note pattern is because the melody is very similar to "L'Hymne à l'amour" which also does the E, F, G after the first part of the melody. Go check it out!!
it makes me so happy that all these people took inspiration and just did different things with it, experimented and made something cool. everyone made their own style of music and it was just so cool and inspiring

Dude; loved this video 7 years ago, love it just as much now. Thanks for doing content like this!
Tried to finish the melody in the (to me) most logical way in my head and came up with the same 3 notes. Cool to see it confirmed.
OH MY GOD SIDNEY GISH!!? She's so amazing
Really cool video! I am always intrigued at how many different ways there are to complete a melody.
I hate to be "that guy" especially considering how much I enjoyed the video, but the final cadence in your example isn't quite a picardy third. A picardy third is actually a pretty specific type of cadence that can only happen when the music before it is in a minor key (or modal). What you would actually call that cadence is a direct modulation to the chromatic submediant, which is just music-theory-speak for you modulated to the major chord based on the 6th note of the scale. I can definitely go into more detail about why it is what it is if anybody is actually interested.
I did not contribute, but I love this kind of engagement you have with your audience and this sort of composition style project. I really appreciate the work you put into this :)
The examples you showed were so varied but so talented! I feel so honoured to watch this video; its so engaging- like a real class!
this video is adorable, even if only because of the fact that Andrew took the time to actually listen to and analyze about a hundred and fifty different works of art, and also present examples to us despite video quality and other factors. I just think it adds to the charm of this being a community project for all backgrounds? It's pleasant! ^.^
omg that vinyl in the back, who's the artist, it's too eye catching to not notice.
ANDREW HUANG You like JDilla? me too!
Irene Montemayor I haven't noticed it half through the video... you just made me recognize it 😂
the metal one at the end was beautiful
I keep coming back to this video to check the comment section to see if anybody starts talking about some kind of music-story synesthesia. For so many years, in different songs, there are times I sense a really clear and concrete story and it’s just amazing to me how nobody is talking about that. When I thought about the resolution of this melody it also started the way Andrew noticed a lot of people were coming up with. I need, please, someone tell me I’m not alone in this. I’ve looked everywhere for this kind of synesthesia but I just find sound-color, sound-taste, sound-smell... not even sound-emotion because well I guess emotion is something everyone feels when listening to music.
But it’s just so real this story/logic to certain melodies you can’t deny it if you feel it.
For example, for Vivaldi’s Spring I “sensed” a beautiful start of a day back in the renascentist times and two boys playing, then an accident happened to one of the boys at a river (but I don’t want to dig much into that). And I know this melody was intended (I’m sure I saw it somewhere) as a drunk man after (or before) a hard day of work.
Another example is Pachelbel’s Canon in D major (but I only sensed this one time) a man thinking about how much he loved his wife while picking up some kind of hay bale (I don’t even know what it’s called) at a field that he owned in which his house was located. This scene took place in a past time, because (in my head) the man dress in an old way.
I even created a short melody with a very clear story in my head, but I don’t know anyone who feel the same way I do. I made people listen to it and when I asked what story they could have perceived they told me some logic ones that were kind of similar to the one in my head in some ways. I really wish I could talk with more people who feel this way.
Ooh, you know what? I read about that a little while ago. Some people who daydream a lot (called immersive daydreaming) are triggered by music. Same stuff happens to me occasionally, but not as vivid as what you described.
Like with Lindsey Stirling’s Masquerade, as I was listening to it I imagined two people, a man and a woman, entering a ballroom at two opposite sides. Everyone in the room is is extravagantly dressed and wearing masks. The man and the woman see each other immediately, for they’ve known each other for a very long time. They’re mortal enemies, and each one has been trying to defeat the other for years. But as they meet on in the center of the ballroom, they both silently decide on a truce, just for the night. And they dance, but it’s... tense, each watching the other closely.
I dunno, it was pretty neat, though. Just popped into my head as I was listening.
Abria that’s amazing! I just heard it for the first time and the melody is fantastic, it really does have a clear sense/logic and the story you described fits perfectly. I love the unspoken background you perceived about them being enemies for a long time (the feeling you get through the tension when they’re dancing). Thank you so much for sharing this with me, I really hugely appreciate it. And will definitely check about immersive daydreaming!
Abria if I had to add more to the story or just try to understand what parts of the melody or for what reason you perceived it like that I’d say. There’s a conversation between the melodies that have mainly two motifs (I don’t know if you heard about leitmotif, basically short melodies that represent something: mostly a character in a story). These two motifs are similar, but sometimes exactly the opposite which probably why you perceived it as male and female and also as antagonist characters. If I may add, I think they both think high of the other and acknowledge their potential, their rivalry consists on a competition to prove themselves better than the other. This last part, though, I don’t know if you agree since you said “mortal enemies”, for me it’s more like they enjoy this game of competition between them (or maybe I’m just a romantic, or maybe they just realized this after dancing together) haha. This makes me so happy! 😊
@@BrinnaOfficial you know it's something unique I guess that the story process through your brain instantly after hearing a song I guess you can be video director of any music video because correct visual brightes the melody 100 times more
Noman Saleem Noman Saleem I completely agree with the last thing you said! Right visuals also help understand and convey an even clearer message. Thanks for saying I would be a good video director of music videos, I actually get a lot of ideas of music videos when listening or composing music 🤗 I guess the story I perceive is not going to be exactly the same, but at least very similar to one someone else might perceive (sometimes, when it’s more abstract it’s just certain feelings or logic to the melody resolution, like in this video). I’ve seen lately a lot of music producers talking about it. I hope one day someone can actually put a name to it and start doing more research on the subject so we can find more spaces to talk about it freely and actually being understood 😊
Wow! This was so unique and fascinating to see other people build on this melody. It was so cool to watch this analysis!
this video made my night! entertaining on so many levels. And I learned the whole time without knowing til I learned. I am Inspired! Thank you So MUCH!
