    Love that DP and PT are assembling the engine in-house. I hope the whole engine build is done at the shop. Closer to what a lot of us would do to save some cash. I'm sure NV Auto or some of their other partners could do a great job quickly and with more knowledge, but that is not why I watch the channel!

    Not to be picky, but Most of the cheaper ring grinders use a thick fiber disc. If you try to grind both ring gap ends at the same time, you will taper the gap. Grind only one side and it is easier to keep the gap parallel and even. Plus if you are gapping for a boosted engine, the gap will be larger. This means a lot more grinding and a bigger chance of tapering the gap, so grinding one side is very important. Use a fine file to deburr the areas you just cut to stop bore scratching. Practice on an old ring first. Good going guys

    • @emc3065

      Dave says later in the video that he only grinded one side for most of them, and he takes a file to them to grind down the burs.

    In 2003/2004 I built a 560kw @32psi boost 4G63 for a friend which went into a GSR evo 3 replica. Didn't take much really. Ported evo 3 head. Cams, can't remember the specs, around 272° duration. Forged rods, pistons. GT 35/40 turbo (same as XR6 turbo). Link ECU with full anti lag. I designed and made exhaust manifold, true pulse tuned to suit cam specs, (unheard of 17yrs ago). Designed and built inlet manifold (pulse tuned aswell). 1000cc injectors.
    Engine would easily rev to 9,500 rpm (limiter). Car weighed around 1150kg
    The most insane car I've ever been in.

    i dont think people actually delete the balance shafts for the 3hp you may gain or not. The real problem with those is that the bearings like to fail and then you'll lose oil pressure.

    • @corwininadsm

      True, but many DSM's have had a hard life with poor maintenance/oil for a turbo car.

    • @jethrox827

      On my forged build, I had my balancer shafts turned down to eliminate that little belt in case of failure at high revs. I can't detect any more vibration.

    • @blackmount1
      @blackmount1 4 роки тому

      It's very rare, and often from extreme mileage, or a internal oiling failure... Also alot of people who "rebuild" 4Gs themselves skip replacing the balance shaft bearings due to them being "difficult" to replace, even if they are extremely worn or lightly damaged, will ultimately lead to the bearing failing very quickly.

    • @blackmount1
      @blackmount1 4 роки тому

      I only have had 1 4G puke out a balance shaft bearing, and it had 240,000 original miles on it, and was receiving a helluva beating by a 17 year old on some twisty country roads. One could argue the car was run low on oil, and the car started starving for oil in the harder corners because the mains bearings were toast too when the engine was pulled apart afterwords.

    • @blackmount1

    Plastigage is actually the more accurate way of measuring for 95% of people building an engine. At sizes as small thousandths of an inch , the ambient temperature and the the temp of your hand holding the tool will change the measurement significantly. Your tool also has to be calibrated and the measurement process itself is not hard to screw up. Also , plastigage can alert you to misalignment of the main bores or a bend in the crank, calipers wont.

    Guys, super to see this build,
    but the opening of the clips in the pistons have to be at the bottom or at the top, if they are facing the side they can `unlock'/'compress' at high rpm's and can get out of their groove because of the great forces.
    And that is motor failure.
    Keep up the good work.

    The ring orientation is one of the biggest myths in engine assembly. Everyone seems to know that the rings are supposed to rotate when the engine is running, but that means that how you orient them does not matter, they won't stay in that place anyway.
    Don't take my word for it, plenty of big engine manufacturers line up the grooves because that makes it easier for machines to assemble the rings.

    Pound out the dent on the original oil pan. The windage tray and improved baffles could easily make enough of a difference to prolong the life of the engine at the track, as like most 90s performance vehicles, oil starvation during extreme lateral Gs is a real thing largely due to primitive/basic baffeling.
    The R32 GTRs, and various Mitsubishis really seemed to suffer from this the most
