Hi John P I was a professional cellist, in the mid ‘60’s and as a member of the London Symphony Orchestra, we traveled and were the resident orchestra at the Daytona Music Festival and I remember well, a rep from Rolex turning up, at a rehearsal, with a box full of Daytona watches. He was asking a few hundred dollars each, if musicians wanted to buy. I didn’t, being quite young and needing money. 😱 Probable the same reference., as Paul Newman’s. Wow. What would that box of probably 20 or so, be worth now !Keep the good work up.
I've just bought a datejust 36 for my 65th, to me it's the classic Rolex watch. I'm not keen on large watches and the 36mm is a bit more discreet when out and about.
@@angelos6817 I dream of having a month like that. :-) Mine is just handing over my cash to my boss (wife), LOL. :-) I will say this - you have perfect taste in watches. I too love all three of these models you bought.
Absolutely correct. I bought my 6265 Daytona in 1982 when I was 15 years old. Actually I traded my unused midsize jubilee I got for my bar mitsvah (at 13) to get the Daytona that had been sitting in the ADs window for 2 years. The AD was happy for the trade. He thought he could sell my midsize in a heart beat. 37 years later my Daytona is worth a fortune and I am selling it now to finance my daughter’s college !
The Daytona was not a water tight watch. And in the 70s everybody wanted to wear their watches at the pool and beach. The real reason why many Omegas were not that popular.😎
I've been seeing some of your videos in the past days, this one I liked a lot. I think Cellini is beautiful watch but there is not many people who want them, too classic and too expensive. I had a Date 36mm (16500?) oyster dark blue dial, plexi, I got it in 1979 and sold it in 2013. It was really cosy, but too small. Then I bought an Explorer II in 2005, which I loved, but exchanged it 8 years later for Datejust II with gold bezel, which was too heavy and awkward, didn't like it at all so I sold it 2 years later. Then I bought a Datejust 36mm silver with jubilee bracelet which was excellent, especially the crown on top of the clasp, one of a kind, but after having it for some time, I thought that 36mm was far too small for a man. If this watch was in 41mm with same look and jubilee crown, would be perfect, but Rolex made a new Datejust 41 and put a normal clasp on a jubilee bracelet, a total miss! I never wanted Datejust again. Just to mention, nobody wanted 36mm Datejust, when I wanted to sell, everyone said: We don't want it, we cannot even sell ours for several years. Later I bought a Yachtmaster with blue dial and platinum bezel. This watch (silver) has been one of my favourite waches for over 30 years, but as silver dial got discontinued, I had to get the blue one. Beautiful, elegant, sporty... but after some time, I found it that it was too shinny, besides the dial seemed smaller and smaller every day, so I got rid of it soon. How I have a Cartier, :)) a new Santos released in 2019. Regarding Daytona, this is a horrible watch, and I would never buy it even if it was 70% off, the people who have it or are on waiting list to get it forever, are just snobs. I will never understand why people want it. How many times one would even look at the 3 chrono markers, or even use them. Total bullshit of the watch. Like in history, there are times when the artists are worth nothing, and their work very little, then 100 or 200 years latter, they are gods and their legacy inspire everyone, thus millions are spent to buy their works. Let's see how many of the watch makers will even survive this difficult 2020. Stay safe!
Spot on about the plastic crystal Dayton's. I had one in the late 80's. Paid $750 for it. No one wanted them. Sure wish I'd had a read from a fortune teller before I sold it in 1989.
I agree with your selection, I bought a 16570 black dial back in 2006. I liked the watch from the first moment I saw it. Still my daily wear after all these years and still ticking strong
My parents gave me a Rolex Datejust for my University graduation. I think that the fluted bezel and the jubilee bracelet makes it look a little too formal, but is indeed the one watch collection you could have.
Thank you. This was an excellent video. It really strikes home with me. In 1980 when I became a partner at one of the major, top 10 law firms I bought myself a Date Just. I wore it for years and still take it out once in a while; I believe this was a common thing to do among my fortunate colleagues. As you and Fed know, in the last few years during my retirement I have bought a number of very slick and collectable watches. I think you have it right on, and I found the historical stuff very informative.
I still remember Jos. Banks in Mineapolis. They basically bought distressed, clearance, and bankruptcy inventory. In the late 70s, early 80s they got a bunch of quartz Rolex models. Took them forever to unload them. My favorite buy was a Tudor chronograph when no one wanted them. Best $265 I ever spent. Always have loved chronograph watches.
I am into bigger watches, and only these 2 brands: Rolex and Panerai. I bought a 41mm Datejust as a gift to myself, and I have never regretted it. This is my perennial dress watch. For casual & everyday use, I love my 44mm Deepsea
That's because there was a stigma about fake Rolex watches with Quartz movements. Back in the day people would say "if it ticks it's a fake". In the 70's and 80's Rolex (Date Just/Day Date) were the most faked watches out there, along with Cartier watches. The guys with money back then wanted the hot model Rolex (not Submariners) Date Just/Day Date gold. It was all about gold/two tone back in the day.
I just turned 40 earlier this year and was beyond stoked to find my black dial 126660 deepsea at a local AD. It's my every day and figured at 40 I owe myself something nice to last the rest of these days
This is ABSOLUTELY true I purchased a solid gold Daytona from an AD in 1985 ref#6265 for $4800.00 that’s not a mis print my AD was happy to get rid of it. Today it’s worth about 100 grand.
John - The Rolex Milgauss is able to pass through airport x-ray machines without damaging the movement with repeat exposure. Great if you fly on business very regularly. But still a niche benefit.
I'm really surprised the Cellini Prince (any of the four) didn't make this list. Beautiful art deco dress watches with fully finished movements (really well done) and display backs even and nobody bought them. They are still available at less than 50% of their original retail. It's just not the sort of watch Rolex was known for and didn't fit in with what those who buy Rolex want from that company's watches.
My favorite Rolex is the 35mm Yachtmaster in Platinum + Stainless (168622) circa 2000-2005 -- nice, unassuming, monochromatic look and you can get one for less than $6000 in very nice condition. It is also 35mm which is nice since I hate big watches. Can't lose any more value too so that's nice.
You have to look at the current Air-King 116900, it is an excellent tool watch for Pilot and has a great history. The first time I saw it in my hand in Bangkok, I have to buy one, paid Thailand official Rolex retail price that worked out to be higher than Singapore Retail Price. Perhaps it is the appreciating Thai Baht or ‘Luxury Tax’. But totally no regret, the dial design looks better than many Rolex Professional Series time pieces. Wear it and you wouldn’t want to take it down. The movement is the same as Submariner and also has the same case as Milgauss, therefore, it is really at a great value. Rolex Cellini time pieces are also at great value for your money when compared to time pieces of many famous and leading Swiss leading luxury watch makers. They are not at easy entry prices compared to OP, DJ, DD and Stainless Rolex Professional Series time pieces. But I would definitely purchase a Rolex Cellini in the pipeline. The Cellini designs are timeless and you can trust Rolex quality and great after sales service. There is no stock of Explorer II in the official AD channel as I write this.
Good segment JP. Rolex is managing their product like a Boss, though I would not pay their inflated prices!!! Honestly cannot justify dropping such coin. 5711? Fracking Ridiculous!!!
Picked up a black dialed 1019 in 1985 to use at work. The watch had a hard life the first dozen years and it shows. It remains the best-looking non-vintage Rolex watch. Recently picked up a 2007 116264 to complement the 1019. Both models seemed to hold odd places in the Rolex line. Considered the Explorer II and Daytona but went with the TAG Heuer 1964 Carrera re-edition in black. Even though the respective dials/scales on the Rolexes would have been useful, the decimal scale on the Carrera was more so and had better human factors.

Forgot the Rolex Anniversary Submariner, bought mine in 2005 for 25% off retail because no one liked the green bezel, it sat at the Rolex store in Hartford, ct for 6 months after the second batch was released. The sales manager was extremely excited when I showed any interested in it. I got lucky, we got stuck in traffic between Boston and nyc and stopped at the local mall, turned out to be a great investment.
