My first day on duty an innocent child lost her life in a car accident. Her mother had just taken her out of the car seat to breastfeed. The driver, the child's grandmother, was on a road with very narrow shoulders. Her suburbans rear tire hits the shoulder and they dive across the road and into the ditch and roll. The little girl was the only one ejected and right after, rolled over by the vehicle. I had my own daughter at home almost the same age, that day changed me forever. RIP Elaine, I'll never forget.
Oh my. That is quite a story, thank you for sharing it with us here. We hope that you found the help needed to process such an event and that you continue to look after your own mental wellness. Also, thank you for your work and serving your community.
I had a call. A young male told his friend he had 3 things left to do 1. Smoke a cigarette 2.listen to favorite song and 3 I never knew. There was also a young child that od and had internal bleeding. Parents were drug addicts feeding that addiction. When her parents were arrested they said we can make another child.
I have PTSD as a paramedic in Chicagoland area - we put all our energy in helping others but we sometimes neglect ourselves - Godbless you all and thank you for your services
I am a Correctional Officer in Melbourne and I went through PTSD, my claim was accepted by the insurance company after an investigation that lasted 28 days, received professional help that it was just a joke, I then took massive action and I started to research on my own, I dug deep into the human brain how it's been programmed, I started to understand why we think what we think and how to manage those thoughts and stress and take advantage on them. That happened early 2020 before COVID, and today, August 2020, after just a few months not even half year, i am having the time of live, I have allowed myself to learn from that experience with PTSD and also, I have started to help other brothers in blue who are struggling with the same nightmare as I was. I have become a coach out of my work hours, to Emergency and Law Enforcement Personnel because when I was dwelling on that dark place I couldn't find exactly what I needed so I became my counselor, my therapist my coach and I met other coaches around the world, sharing my story, being vulnerable and trying to break the culture of silence that exits among Law Enforcement Officers. My first step to get out of that situation was changing the way I was communicating to myself , understanding that we don't own what we think, we don't own what we feel, we are not feelings, emotions or thoughts, they come and go, we are above and beyond any emotions, feelings or thoughts. We tend to get attached to labels such as depression, stress, anxiety, etc those labels disempower people and is very easy to fall into those traps and make them mean everything, but that's the way we've been programmed to live in, I am seeing it every day with the Officers I am currently helping. We might be different in many aspects of life but at core.... We all the same, we all have the same basic needs, we all want to be good enough so we can be loved. I trust this little story of my life can inspire you or at least can make you see that we can overcome everything in life, sometimes we need someone to guide us, someone who's been there before. Regards Bruce Sanchez
Thank you for this. I am in the police academy right now and everyday I realize a little more that I’m actually doing this with my life and some days that’s exciting and other days that’s terrifying. I am very thankful that long before I started even the academy, I have been passionate about mental/emotional health and doing the work it takes to be proactive in that area. I am so thankful I’m going into this career in a time where it’s okay to talk about it and okay to not be okay. Thank you for sharing your story and for your bravery in asking for help. God knows this will help whoever sees this video in gaining the courage themselves!
Don't feel shameful, you do so much for our country and you have to witness so much. Some officers may talk about how great action is on the job, but you at least have learned to understand another person's story because you have walked in the same blood as they half. That makes you a lot more precious than many officers out there. Thank you for what you do for our country.
My dad was in the department for almost 18 years and he suffered from PTSD, he used to tell me stories about gang wars, fights, all that stuff. After his retirement he went on a lot of trips, form that point his PTSD is gone.
I can totally relate to you with the PTSD aspect. I have horrible PTSD. not for the same reasons but as a survivor of rape, domestic violence, among other things. It does get better, stay strong to anyone who has ever been through stuff leaving you mentally destroyed.
Good for you Rob. I listened to this the second time, very few officers have shared their experiences online. That took alot of courage and humility. I think most people hearing this would have a different perspective. Wishing you all the best. Take care brother. I found this very informative.
Im a correctional officer in Washington state my father did it before me when I started I was honored to feel like I was doing some good during this Christmas in 2023 I was at my grandparents house everyone was happy except me everyone was talking about everyone else profession and how proud there were of them except me I felt alone isolated and afraid I started sweating and got the feeling like I need to get away I made my goodbyes and luckily got to my truck before I peeled out of the drive way drove 2 blocks parked and completely broke down and had a panic attack I called my uncle who is in the 82nd airborne division who saw combat in Afghanistan he told me he suffers the same and that we would be ok Point is you don’t have to be a veteran to have ptsd but if you know one or are suffering from ptsd reach out to them help each other and never fight alone
I really appreciate you being so vulnerable and sharing this comment with our community. C/Os have an incredibly hard job and they are underappreciated and not understood in civilian society, and they have an extraordinarily high rate of suicide, just like the prisoners for whom they are responsible for watching over. Your feelings are valid and real and I hope you never feel ashamed about reaching out for help when it's needed. I'm the Executive Director of the organization that made these first responder films, and my biggest regret is that we didn't feature a C/O among our film participants. I appreciate you. --Gabriel
