    Top notch teardown video. Is there any way to tell the difference between a 1080p logic board and a 4K? Is the display connector(s) any different?

    Hi, I have the same 21.5-inch, 2017 iMac, nevertheless I guess is way slower because is the Retina 4k upgrade. Anyway. I don´t know if I can apply the same procedure and ubgrade to ssd and up to 32 RAM.

    I'm so glad I got the i7 processor, 16 gb ram and a 1t ssd. My machine stays together, but thanks so much guys awesome video!

      That didn't look fun and putting it back together... nope! This post is 3 years old and I'd STILL be putting it back together.
      Glad I got the 3.6 GHz Quad-Core Intel Core i7, 16 GB 2400 MHz DDR4 instead of a base model.

      @@billytheweasel yes.... apple sure knows how to get people to spend their money lmao they make the 2017 base model 1080p with a slow hard drive and 8gb ram dual core not really upgradable and the 27" have the door on the back anyone could easily upgrade the ram etc I know you get what you pay for but come on apple! 🤣

    How is the fan noise on this?
    I have a 2014 15" macbook pro, I am looking for something quieter under load.

    Hello going to be doing this to my 2017 21.5 thanks to your kit i just purchased both the SSD and Memory. My question is do you have any videos where you are upgrading the Processor? I have the Dual-Core i5, what processor can i upgrade it with? Please do tell. thanks! hoping to not mess this up and have a great machine for many years to come. Thanks!

      Regrettably, we do not sell or support the processor installs. When in doubt, don't be afriad to contact a local Apple authorized technician during the RAM or SSD install; we highly recommend professional installation.

    The most expensive 4K model have fusion drive standard, is it removable?

    • @FatalityDiablo
      @FatalityDiablo 7 років тому +2

      as gandalf has said, you can remove both, the spinning rust drive and the m.2 ssd if you go with fusion/ssd. and like gandalf said also, you can only replace the 2,5" harddrive with an 2,5" ssd, if you go with the cheaper model. i wonder if there is a compatibility list with all officially unofficially supported parts. can somebody ask gandalf bout that?

    Instead of tearing the whole thing apart to get an SSD in there, can't you run an external ssd through-the lightning port with mac os? Another question, how do you put the screen-glass back on the unit? do you need to buy new adhesive strips or can you reuse what was with it?

    • @poweredbyowc
      @poweredbyowc  3 роки тому +1

      B Minkl,
      Going over your comment we can confirm that you can use an external SSD as a boot drive.
      As for removing the adhesive regrettably the old adhesive would not be able to be reused.
      However, if the internal SSD is replaced our D.I.Y upgrade kits would come with the reseal tape to close the machine back up properly.

    what is exactly the most high-performance intel CPU model you can put on a 4K 2017 iMac ? (l mean if you want to replace the stock i5-3,4 gHz)

    Ive torn down allot of 2011 imacs and macbook pro's, i just ordered a mid 2017 21.5" imac with a shattered glass, i was wondering if you think its doable to remove the displaay myself with the tools you used, im looking to upgrade to an ssd and 32gb ram

      In all honesty the hardest part of the installation has to do with the screen, if you're comfortable with upgrading your computer and following the directions it should be a very easy process. Make sure all the residue is clear, if you cleaned it with chemicals make sure it is entirely dry, and do not overlap the tape. To be safe I'd recommend laying it facedown on a flat and soft surface and leaving it for about 24 hours to properly seal.

    My question is once you remove the adhesive that keeps the glass on the screen, what are you supposed to do when you put the iMac back together?

    • @mitafs
      @mitafs 5 років тому +3

      Remove the old foam tape from both sides of the iMac screen and imac,
      Buy double sided 3M tape, place the iMac screen facing upwards, peel off only one side, being careful to not touch the sticky side of the tape, stick on iMac surface first then carefully peel the top part or the paper off the double sided tape, and slowly place the screen bottom first where the apple logo is on the imac, press lightly to affirm the bond, congratulations you've done it, 😃👍

    Fun fact: the LCD gets dusty quickly on the corners and you are basically scewed since they switched to glueing instead of magnets holding on the front glass... It's one thing to separate the LCD unit from the rest of the machine but you still need to get in between the LCD and the glass to clean the dust. Pretty bad design and it's irritating that I spent so much on this machine and when I'm looking at a homogenous image I can see the dust in both lower corners.

    Does that anti tamper sticker mean it voids your warranty, even though RAM is now socketed and on the back side so you'd have to flip the board?

    • @tipoomaster
      @tipoomaster 7 років тому

      Neat, at least there's that. So the tamperproof sticker I assume is just there in case you break something, but the warranty still applies if you don't

    I just had my iMac upgraded to 16MB and a 1TB solid state drive. The best $500 I ever spent-wow, is it fast now! Unfortunately, my repair shop damaged the inside of the bottom of the glass by using a razor all the way across instead of doing it like you show at 3:45. They should have watched your video!

    I would not recommend getting this model with the spinning hard drive. Boot and log-in times are minutes whereas the SSD version is seconds. Same with starting apps. Can't believe they still sell this model. It's so frustrating.
    I have the 2015 version. I did open it up after suffering for two years with the slow spinning drive. Unfortunately something went wrong with the screen while performing the procedure shown in this video. It has a permanent vertical black stripe. So the computer is fast now with the OWC SSD inside. But we have to use an external display now.

      Yep, sister got a refurbished 27 inch model with a HDD without asking me. The Core 2 Duo Macbook with an SSD in the family feels faster, while the iMac is an i7. Do NOT get a modern Mac with a HDD, macOS isn't suited to it anymore.
