When my friend's 2012 21,5" iMac's hybrid HDD died, he tried to put in a new drive, but broke the lvds screen cable, and he didn't know what to do, so he bought the 2019 21,5" 4K iMac. 😂 I bought his old 2012 iMac very cheaply (in fact almost criminally cheaply, but he wasn't using it anymore, and besides he didn't know what to do with it), and I ordered a new lvds screen cable, a 1 TB WD SSD, put it all together, and now it works fine! I've seen his 2019 4K iMac of course, but because of the screen size, it isn't that noticeable, without comparing the two directly.
If you see the side by side difference with the retina and the 1080 p you definetely see the difference. And what about the possibility of 4k video editing?

I've got a Macbook pro retina, and it's a joy to write on (PhD student), but I tend to use my i7 PC machine far more simply becuause it's a desktop. However, my PC, while being powerful and super fast produces a considerate amount of noise...humming is driving me nuts and, frankly, I'm happy to invest in a machine that is silent or at least near-silent. And since the work-experience on my Mac is a lot better and I hear the Imacs are almost silent, I was thinking I should probably get an Imac and ditch the PC. Any suggestions?
I don't understand why people keep saying 4k or 5k give you more space? your display size is fixed to 21 or 27 inches. higher resolution just make the windows smaller which you can also do manually in a low resolution.
5400 rpm on a base $1500 iMac 4K essentially means it's a mandatory cost to spend $200 extra for an 256GB SSD or a 2TB Fusion drive. Even the 1TB Fusion drive is worth skipping since it only has 24GB of SSD flash. The memory cannot be upgraded which means spending $200 extra to go from DDR3 8GB to DDR3 16GB but in the real world an extra 8GB of DDR3 costs only $40-50. Another blunder is lack of discrete GPU option, and cannot use the iMac as a 3rd party display connected to another computer once it becomes outdated. Another downside is they are using a Broadwell 5th gen CPU instead of the Skylake 6th gen. All-in-all, it's well worth to skip the 21.5" 4K $1500 iMac and just spend the $300 extra for the 27" 5K model if one was looking for an iMac.

Well, for the price of this, it's almost a no-brainer to consider the 27" 5K iMac for dedicated graphics, and just a better experience. Seems that's clearly Apple's bang for the buck Mac right there.

This is a dumb comparison tbh. At least compare models of the same year :-) Obviously an older iMac will be deficient to a new one. The late 2015 regular 21.5" and 4K retina iMacs are identical internally, apart from processor speed which is 0.2 faster in the 4K. The only reason to buy a 4K is for someone who does photo or video work professionally. The average person would have no use for it, there certainly is a lack of meaningful 4K content out there right now (and I own a 4K tv). Id like to see a speed test on both models, seeing as they are are pretty much identical, I would bet the regular 1080p model is faster with the same tasks.

having an higher resolution allows you to have smaller windows on your screen and still being able to read without distortion of the image
with 2k iMac when you resize the window the image will be distorted? I think it's the same just the image becomes smaller
