    One thing I learned while in Juneau was that most of the stores near the docks were owned by big outside companies that didn’t even hire the locals. So to give your business to locals, look for a sign in a store saying “This store owned by an Alaskan.” I feel that if I am invading someone’s home area, the least I can do is give them my business.

      Our tour guide (on a bike ride I did) told us the same thing. I was wondering why Alaska had so many jewelry and watch stores - they said “The cruise lines own them, do your business locally.”

    Due to the travel requirement of a contract with the state I traveled to Juneau for basically 2 to 3 weeks every month and stayed at the Barnoff while there. You are pretty spot on in your review of Juneau but you missed so so much. Also from the look of it you spent a large amount of time based out of the downtown area. Juneau is actually the second largest cities in the US in terms of area. If you explore the area around the airport you will find several national chain stores. It is expensive there, and you already mentioned the reason why. Only two ways to get merchandise there, boat or plane. If you are there in the winter you could very likely get to see the northern lights, which is absolutely amazing. There is so much more there. I can not recommend Juneau enough but it is not for everyone. By the way the fireworks are actually on the 4th of July at 12:01 am making their fireworks the first to go off in the country.

    Springtime is the least rainy/cloudy fyi. Which is good for being able to actually see the landscape. Summer can be extremely rainy, thus blocking the views. Although I personally love the rainy/mist/fog/rainforest vibes. The sunny spring days are what I’d recommend for being able to see all the epic scenery. I live on a boat downtown. Springtime is what I recommend.

      Visiting Juneau AK would be great as a young person versus waiting until you’re older. Fly in with a week long hotel and you can get around everywhere via the public bus system easily. Additionally, the tourist employee industry is all young people so you’d have a very easy time getting invited to bars, bonfires, etc.
      Travel while young - your future isn’t guaranteed

      LDR, if you ever make it to Canada you'll find the Yukon and the Northwest Territories to be a beautiful place to visit. In the summer time Dawson City, Yukon
      has a four day party in mid August known as Discovery Days which celebrates The Klondike Gold Rush Days. Nearby is also the picturesque Kluane National Park (pronounced Clue-annie). Next door is The Northwest Territories and the city of Yellowknife. Lots of great fishing, hunting, hiking etc., and they too have
      the very picturesque Nahanni National Park. You might want to check out the videos and pics of all of these places. Enjoy!

    • @dothtott
      @dothtott Рік тому +1

      The fireworks start at midnight exactly when 4th of July starts. They are done over the Gastineau Channel, and the best view used to be from Mt. Robert's before it was developed imo. It is dark at that time and latitude. Further north it's not dark at night for the summer months (=midnight sun), so there are no big organized 4th of July fireworks shows.

    I agree. My biggest regret was not paying extra to have a window seat for the landing.
    Yeah, it definitely didn't have a capital city vibe at all. Even as tourists, we would run into the same people who would say, "Hello" to us.
    Architecture, I agree. The area around the Capitol is kind of ugly, but aside from that, Juneau probably has the most beautiful architecture of any capital city.
    I felt it was a bit lacking in wildlife, but for a first time visit, Juneau is perfect because it has a little bit of everything, in just a small area. But if you're doing a longer trip, I'd recommend pairing it with another city, as the entire region can be toured in 3 to 4 days. I also recommend coming later in the summer, if you want to see the flowers.
    I will say though, the town does have a tweaker and homeless problem, and is a bit sketchy after dark.

    • @AlaskanInsights
      @AlaskanInsights 2 роки тому +5

      They moved the homeless shelter and food bank from downtown to lemon creek.
      so it is not as bad now "downtown" but still an out of sight out of mind solution
      to cater to the princess cruise overlords.
      we have about 500 homeless here. the 30k population number is not a real number.
      more like a little over 20k, and we have many outlying areas that are not on road system they count.
      a bunch of these people are legislature and aids that reside in other places like anchorage and claim to live here for "reasons" .. Governor is usually the biggest culprit LOL...

    Count on rain it rains about 250 days a year "it's a rainforest". umbrellas are taboo!
    You cannot see fireworks if you are on a cruise ship. they have to leave before 11pm.
    most of the time we get to see pretty colors in the clouds anyway.
    Seasonal workers,, they end up staying a lot of time because they can't afford to leave.
    We got beer, support your local brewery.
    yes, Tracy arm is a must do. a lil spendy.
    On a budget, mendenhal glacier is a city bus ride and a short walk...
    good place to go if you need a handicap accessible trail to see a glacier up close.
    Juneau is the Alaskan Triangle, Stay on The Trail. more people go poof here
    than everywhere else in the world combined.. seriously.
    Travel here for seasonal work?
    Get a Round TRIP Ticket... Don't play games with yourself.
    1 bedroom apt, if you can find one. $1400
    They are not the greatest paying jobs, but you can get mass overtime.
    most people here work for Govt, construction, mining, fishing.....

      True. Everyone is stocked up on sturdy rain gear, no one uses umbrellas. You spend so much time in the rain, carrying an umbrella around is just a nuisance. Been to Juneau many times, and people are very down to earth, in general with less of a mean edge. I couldn't deal with the winters, though.

    I booked a cruise last minute and most of the excursions were sold out. I rented a car for the day, is that not necessary? tiA

    • @RunTheAtlas
      @RunTheAtlas  2 роки тому

      Rental cars aren't necessary since most sights are walkable form the downtown including Mt Roberts Tram, perseverance trail, the restaurants, and ferries to join the glacier cruises, etc.

    Im going to Ketchikan and juneau next week, I’m a bit worried because of the flights but also because I don’t know how welcoming they’re towards foreigners, does it feel safe? Are they welcoming to other cultures?

      Oh awesome! You’ll love it. Ketchikan is a cute little city on the water and very walkable! Both Ketchikan and juneau are friendly to tourists.

    Just a minor correction: From the Mt. Roberts tramway, you cannot see the "entire marine highway", which runs from Ketchican to Skagway.

    I just got back from flying into juneau. I got hotel but honestly I shouldnt have. You can camp damn near anywhere you want for free and the only time I spent in it was when the sun went down at like 11, and 7am when my friend woke me up to go do well everything. Also the Rookery and Peleni have some of the best food

      I visited SE Alaska 15 times, started with a cruise and following as solo independent traveler. A couple things omitted in video is strong native presence and a new museum and several art galleries and locally owned stores with Alaska artifacts. If you are lucky, you can attend biannual Native Celebrations. Natural beauty of Juneau and the whole SE is unparalleled to anything I ever saw. I was lucky not to have many rainy days, in all my visits.

    LOL, visiting this town (not a city) would be nice for a few days, but there is a reason why it is only a one day stop on the cruise ships. The real action in Alaska is in the main, northern part of the state, and even within southeast Alaska, Ketchikan will be a more interesting town.

    Been driving cab in Juneau for roughly 20 years. I have a much different perspective on the people, the government, and the cruise industry.
    We are expecting 1.8 million passengers this year (2024) and it's gross.
    On my tour we will talk about the sewers, the bridge, the derelict cars that show up randomly, the homeless shelters, and how water works in and around the dump.
    The city is now asking me to charge you $3.50 per passenger if you want to take a picture at a public park.
    Since I am not the Sheriff Of Nottingham trying to fleece the traveler for the millionaire overlords of Poop Lake this year is going to be funnier than ever.
    Bring your cameras.

    • @RunTheAtlas
      @RunTheAtlas  8 місяців тому

    By what I saw was you didn’t get out of the downtown except for a boat ride to a glacier. If that is so you missed things like the Mendenhall glacier, the mountainside gardens, one of the oldest churches in Alaska with the 12 stations culminating with a statue of Jesus on the cross with the setting sun glistening over the Gastineau channel, the world class theatre on the island, or the art of the native craftsman. The, one of a kind library at the University of Alaska Southeast. You do an injustice to Juneau and all it has to offer a visitor.
