TIP: there is a bus right at the main central area of the docking area and for $30 It will take you to Mendenhall Glacier round-trip! It runs every 15 minutes from both directions and you can stay as long as you want! The red dog saloon had fantastic crab sandwiches. I was lucky on Carnival Splendor last May we had a very sunny day and were right at the main center central dock. Absolutely loved the tram to the top, but there was snow on the ground so you couldn’t really hike at that time. It’s an awesome port 😊
When we did the Mt. Roberts tram it was a cold foggy day, completely overcast. About halfway up we were completely surrounded by clouds. Nothing but pure white out the windows, and then suddenly the sun came out! We had actually gotten above the clouds! We couldn't see a thing below us, but it was pretty amazing. It was even much warmer. It was like an island in the sky.
I am going on my first cruise and it is to Alaska in July. I have been watching all of the 'what to know before you go to Alaksa' videos for months. Yours has been by far the best one and was EXACTLY the information I have been looking for!! thank you!!!!!
Another free and frugal thing to do is visit the state capital, walkable from your ship. They offer free tours, and they usually last 3-4 hours, super informative and educational about Alaska.
I’ve are visiting for the 1 st time at end of September. You are one of the only ones who hilite the botanical garden, it is beautiful so thank you. I think more should visit and recommend it, we will include it in our plans for Juno
I had no idea you did port guides. This...format...is...AMAZING!!! The pacing, the editing between seeing you, maps, and b-roll...*chefs kiss*. Now I have to look for any and all you've already made. My wife and I are impressed. Thank you for making this, sharing it, and we look forward to more. ❤
Thankee! Yes, it was quite the happenin’ series until we shut it down during the shutdown, ha ha. I think we did about 20 episodes back in the day!! :P
We have been to this port city two times. There is a city bus to the Alaskan brewery that is easy to access and cheep to do. The city is very walkable and it is very easy to see the museum and all the other high lights
Thank you for the port guides which are so informative. It’s a real pleasure to watch your vlogs. You make a great couple and have a really great relationship.
Lots of great info! Will add Glacier Gardens to bucket list for next visit. Just FYI that there are bathrooms on top floor of library and free wifi there also.
We went there last year at this time and it was, by far, the best vacation we've ever been on. Juneau, as well as Skagway, Ketchikan and Victoria were magnificent. We WILL be back but probably will fly into Juneau so we can tour at our own pace and not be subjected to the cruise ship schedule. What ever you choose to do you won't be wrong. We did the gold panning, Gold Creek cookout, Tracy's Crab Shack, Red Dog Saloon, and walking around. Can't sing the praises enough.
So couple things About Juneau Alaska The sky tram is still pretty awesome even if you go during cloudy periods One of my favorite hikes It's the mount Robert's trail which starts where the road ends and you can hike all the way up To. Where The Tram Is at And then it's usually like 10 or 15 bucks of buying anything there and the let you ride back down. Also if you want To do something relatively cheap. The park across the lake from the Mendenhall glacier visitor center, where they do a lot of the rafting trif you follow, that trail for about a mile. On your right. We'll be a picnic area follow that, and then on your left will be the start of the trail to get to the glacier itself.
Great video. My family and I are going on Alaska Cruise in July and had no idea what to expect. I'm so glad I found your video and now we can save money. We don't have to book tours from the cruise ship. Thank you, thank you.
We used Harv and Marv whale watching. 34’ foot boat with 6 and your captain for on the water personal tour. We saw whales, stellar sea lions covering a island and a stop at the Mendenhall glacier. Way cheaper than the ship tour and they pick you up at the dock.
We have them booked for our first cruise to Alaska in July 2023. I’m so glad you had a good experience with them. We are so looking forward to this trip!!
Oh thank Goodness! I relied heavily on your port guides for Mexico last year, and I was so bummed I didn't see any Alaska ones yet. I did binge all of your other Alaska series, but I am especially looking forward to Juneau, Ketchikan and Sitka port guides!
Thank you. We are going in September and interested in going to Mendenhall Glacier and Nuggett Falls. We are there from 1pm - 9pm. We were there in 2010 and did the Whale watching.
I love your channel, very informative and an upbeat vibe. Hubby and I are going on sea and land cruisetour this May. Can't wait! I'm taking notes and watching your other port guides. Off the subject, but with your voice Jay you should be on the radio or a DJ.
For a small boat whale watching or combo tour, I can recommend Gastineau Guiding. They use 20 person boats where all the windows can fold up for views out any side of the boat.
Great content! I’m a new traveler. Thanks for getting to the point and getting some great pics for reference! I’m trying to wrap my head around how beautiful!!
Appreciate the info, haven’t watched any others that mentioned the Botanical Garden …. Something I will want to visit. Thank you for being so thorough!
It was very rainy and foggy when we visited Juneau. We did visit the museum and loved it. We also walked to the whale and saw a whale going by. I need to go back.
I love the inclusion of the maps but I wish you went into a little more detail a few time instead of saying, “there’s stuff to walk to.” You were so close to greatness. If I have to still go research somewhere else then you are not the guide I need. I know what the cruise line offers so what people need most are your port info and in-town guides. I do love the details you added about which places you booked independently. Well, you are still the best guide I’ve found but just a little encouragement to get even better.
We went to the Alaska FIsh Company, it's the area where the sea planes come in and dock right in port. The Fish was SO good. You can sit inside or out. Just a recommendation for a fish place.
So the mount Roberts tram is amazing even when it is cloudy and rainy. Also if you have the time if you hike up Mount Roberts to the top of the tram if you buy something up there for usually about $10 that counts as your ticket for the way down.
Thanks for all the great info! Were doing 1st Alaskan cruise end of May. Booked a glacier/salmon bake combo. Hope the weather is not yoo wet, but either way...im excited!
I so want a do-over on the Alaska B2B!! We want to give the Gold Creek Salmon Bake a second try. Our first time there was a bit of a miss. May have been the amount of rain we had that day, but it was a case of reality not meeting expectations. Saw you two walking into town from the AJ Dock. We did the bus because of my ankle and knee issues last year. Still not sure why they made us dock at AJ when the Franklin Dock was completely open. We did Deckhand Dave's for lunch. Awesome tacos!
This was such great info, especially for those that have never been...! Have you gone to the fish hatchery? Thank you again for all that you do for us! Can't wait to see the rest of the series!
I will put this out there about the AJ Dock, dont be fooled like I was! ha It is like a mile, uphill and away from town, before you loop back towards town! From the ship it looks like you are just right there and a very short walk. But there is all types of industrial buildings in the way, with no way to get around them. So you have to go out of the way the other direction to loop around those buildings. We started to just walk it, then figured out the path you have to take, and just got on the bus for $5 they offered. Which figured at the end of the day, would be better than walking back that long path.
You didn't mention the Naa Kahidi Dance Show. I'm really interested in seeing it with my 5 year old (and husband, but doubt he'll be as impressed as our kiddo), as well as the Fortress of the Bear and the Sitka National Historical Park. I'm hoping I can pull it off on scheduling all 3 into our day.
We definitely suggest having a plan in place before arriving in port. Some ports like Juneau and Ketchikan have vendors that try to sell tours on the spot, but other ports don't seem to have many of those options. We typically book independent tours to save some money, but we always set them up ahead of time.
Perfect timing, we will be there in May. Dee made the comment about planning. Since we are still kind of new to cruising, how far out do most folks plan? In non pandemic times at least.
I’d say typically a year ahead or so, the planning begins. Some folks wait until a few months before. It’s whatever your comfort level is since some tours may sell out months before the sailing.
Very good information, covered it all very well. There are new totem poles throughout the boardwalk and nice wood carvings on top of Mt. Roberts. I am not sure there were Aquillean sculptures when you visited. There is also salmon hatchery, but I have no info on that. Native culture is prominent and biannual native Celebration brings tribes from SE and farther Alaska to sing, dance and drum. Too bad cruise visitors don’t have time for that. My favorite port is Icy Strait Point and town of Hoonah. I visited 15x as independent traveler, flying to Juneau and then exploring small communities.
Where do we find the Native cultural activities. Would like to check if we'd be in port when anything is happening. Also, I was told if we wanted native made souvenirs to go to places where the native sell their stuff . Do you know where any are?
@@kathykelley2104 There are native owned stores and native art including jewelry are signed or have bear paw carved or engraved on them. Museums are great source of information. But, as I said, it requires more time than just a few hours.
Glacier gardens looks Awesome. I still can't get my head around somewhere being refered to as a rainforest that isn't in South America or Asia, I usually associate a rain forest with somewhere tropical not somewhere cold.
Going to Alaska this summer super excited! When you wouldn't use the cruise tours how did you get transportation to places? Sorry you might have mentioned this but I'm at work and might not have caught it.
It’s a scenic cruising day onboard the ship unless you choose to upgrade to the small boat excursion as we did last year!! :D ua-cam.com/video/Ytk4gsDiZdM/v-deo.html
Did you know Red Dog Saloon is women owned and operated? We went there to check it out and grab a bite to eat and was talking to the hostess, she lives actually about 20 miles from us, and was giving us some insight on the current business. I thought that was so cool.
What do you recommend for people who are NOT wheelchair or scooter bound but CANNOT walk long distances (1/2 a mile IS long distance to us)? We hated Juneau when we went earlier this year because we were not able to do or see much (Alaska Brewing for lunch).
If you have both on your itinerary, we’d say Icy Strait. There are a ton of other fun things to do in Juneau, particularly the glacier and maybe even the salmon bake or tram ride!! :D
We took the city bus, as documented in the daily vlog for that particular adventure!! :D Carnival Spirit Pt.4: Juneau, Glacier Gardens, Upside Down Trees, City Bus, Tracy's King Crab Shack ua-cam.com/video/OgOmljXUPq4/v-deo.html
It’s about eight miles away from the main port area, and we showed how to ride the city bus there in a recent Juneau vlog. Other than that, you would probably need a taxi or a tour to get there.
Just discovered your videos.. thank you, they are very helpful! We will be cruising to Alaska late July and we have one who is in a wheelchair. Would you recommend renting a car to go around, including Mendenhall glacier, or public transportation will suffice? Any suggestions will help. Thank you!
Thank you guys this helps a lot. I had a question though. We are trying to find a private tour that does both Mendenhall Glacier and the Glacier Gardens. The only one we found is through our ship (Quantum of the seas), but it's quite pricy considering the individual price for both...
When you went from your SeaTac area hotel to Pier 91, what transportation did you use and how can I book it? How much was it for 2? Did they automatically pick you up at the end of your Alaskan cruise and take you back to the airport? Thanks!
Thank you so much for doing this series. We are going to Alaska this summer on a SAS group cruise ( also a first). I have been struggling to choose excursions. Juneau is our second port and I splurged on a helicopter flight seeing and glacier walk tour. Since we missed booking the glacier tour at Tracy Arm. It is supposed to be finished by 1pm assuming everything goes well and we are able to do it. The ship leaves at 3pm. Does that leave us anytime for something in town? What would you recommend?
I have a question about the Gold Creek salmon bake. Some reviews say the salmon was full of bones, and not enjoyable to eat. Did you find the salmon to have a lot of bones? Thanks
Hey guys, we have a whale watch booked in Icy Strait through Glacier Wind. If we only have time for one whale watch, would you recommend Icy Strait or Juneau?
Icy Strait would probably be the better stop for whales since there are so many other options for Juneau, like the glacier, salmon bake, etc. Icy Strait options tend to be more limited, but that Port Guide episode is coming tomorrow morning!! :P
TIP: there is a bus right at the main central area of the docking area and for $30 It will take you to Mendenhall Glacier round-trip! Do you book these independent tours right at the dock? Or do I have to prebook on their website? Thanks.
@carolr.1118 We book ahead of time just to make sure the tours don’t sell out. You can sometimes pick them up at the dock, but there’s no guarantee!!

Thanks
I don't remember it having many bones. But maybe we had a good batch. It was very tasty.
Thanks so much! We have the interactive self-guided jeep adventure booked currently for Juneau. We’ll be on the lookout for your video tomorrow.
