As a retired roofing contractor when the roof was first shown the first thing that came to my mind because it was an open area was nail pop. Good video. I used to volunteer and do bi-annual inspections of a little old lady in my church and fix problem areas. She didn't have any money so after fixing about 20 nail pops over a 2 year period I got some guys in the church to pitch in and we roofed it for her for free.
That's a nice church you all go to. No way you could knock on doors and get a set of neighbors to do that. I'm picturing a little old lady smiling after her new roof was installed. I bet she was thankful each time you came out too. Makes me want to return to church and see what it's like there. It was just like you mentioned and probably still is.
@@willoughby1888 In this day and age, some of the best people are found in church. Yes there will be some hypocrites' but many good people. Plus the Lord wants us to take care of the elderly.
@@jvillebil13 I am "the elderly". I have a hard time walking now, and I haven't driven in decades. I think I can still make it to church though. Last few times I went they had loud youthful music and nobody could head each other. Even S.A. was like that. The other churches I belonged to got sold and I ended up moving.
I remember working with a contractor, and we did the roof in a day and a half. The night we finished, we got a significant sundowner after dark. The contractor got a call in the morning, and the customer said large sections were just gone. The shingles had no sun time to stick together, and they all just started flapping and making a huge sale on top of the roof. Yep, the contractor at the job.
I wish you was just around my area. I've learned so many things from you over the last few years, but I know my roof is coming to the end of its life in the next few years and you would get my roof replacement without a doubt. Thanks Brian
love this kind of content...when you not only explain it but quickly show exactly how to do it. Sometimes I don't fully understand the explanation if you don't show it. This one was pretty straight forward but the dabbing instead of a straight line answered some questions for me. Thanks.
Easy job! ALL the leaks I had were totally INVISIBLE. All the roofers want to re-roof the whole area at $2500. Also mine not a gravy job like this one in the video! My roof is at a 45 degree slope!
Thank you. I repair for a living and have about given up locating the leaks. Tell the customer to call in the roofers. But you just shared that I have great hope to fix some of these little pests. But those California pavers. Nope, staying away. I have no idea what I am looking for..
Very good video. Great camera work easy to follow explanation.. can you put a link to the thing on your ladder? I have a hard time not damaging my gutters.
Awesome! Thank you for sharing that information, I am in hurricane territory, so always checking roof for problems but not a professional. Yes so much fly by night contractor soliciting like you said,….brittle roof replace all of it, thank you! a lot more confident on just repairs!
I've stuck a piece of random shingle underneath the damaged part of the shingle and glued it in. It has to be a thin piece of shingle so it doesn't stick up too much. Sloppy nailing causes a lot of problems.
Is the Goecell that much better than like Henries wet patch. I have a bunch of shingles to do this on cause the nails on my eaves are short (presumably to avoid penetration) and aren't sealing. I already bought the wet patch, should I ditch it and get the Geocell?
Hello there, first time tuning-in and already learning a lot. Thank you so much. So, how to find a honest and excellent contractor, big or small. Any tips on how to eye them??? Be well and safe.
Thanks, I saw water leaking into my garage and I thought I saw it coming from a screw, but I couldn’t understand why. I’ll get on top this week and try to find the nail that might be sticking out. Besides calking the nail anywhere else I should add sealant ?
No, as long as you can verify, there is one leaking. Just seal that and any shingles you may split loose. Typically, if you don't have flashing, chimney, pipe boots, or anything like that, this is usually the culprit.
kinda disagree somewhat on the brittle test, some are irreparable, but you are right that most roofers just wanna replace the whole roof instead of the repair, a great tool to help on a repair is the roof snake, I think thats the name, helps you not have to bend shingle too far up to make room for hammer, you have the best info on roofing on youtube, keep it coming
I don't think we disagree. I just don't want to give the false impression that everything is brittle and not repairable. Everything is repairable to an extent. But yes, some are worn out and brittle, they will literally crack. The majority of the time, they are repairable, but those others on youtube bend it up over 90° which is a bit ridiculous.
If it's just the one, why not pry the nail out and geocel the hole? Chances are that nail will back out over time. May be rotted wood because of the leak, or nailed to the edge of the plywood.
Very good content, thank you for your videos. I have a water leak on my roof, bout go up on my roof so soon. Do you have the link where I can buy that flat bar, caulk gun like the one you're using? TIA
10:23 - Question: what is your idea behind dabs instead of a line other than longer set times with the bead? Is that the only reason or possibly something else I haven’t seen? Thanks for the great tip!
It depends on what your sealing, what your attempting to do(stick something down, divert water away from entering, or just plug a hole or caulk a nail head) and lastly the quality of your sealant. NP1 & Vulcan are two excellent commercial grade exterior sealants.
It really depends, from market to market, and one somebody's willing to get out of bed and drive across town for. Whether they're skilled and know what they're doing or just a hack.
It's best to just pull the nail out, caulk the hole, and if you want to be foolproof, slide a piece of thin aluminum flashing over top of the hole with a dab of caulk on top to seal the shingle above down to it. This works especially well when working with old, brittle shingles that are prone to tear if raised.
@@briandurkin35 I know, not the answer you wanted to hear, but what you must understand is, when nails pop up they do so because of expansion & contraction which means the hole the nail was in also has expanded so if you drive a new one back in, unless you also drive one next to it with the second nails head overlapping the first nails head, it will most likely just pop back up again. With a dimensional architect shingle you may even cut a tooth off of the exposure and seal it down over a hole to blend it in.

nice tip with the sealer...not a full line but just dabs to keep the shingle down

You can also use prybar on top of nail then hammer on pry areas. If you run into one or two nails more than likely there will be more.
Best to pull the nail; renail to its's side and fill the nail hole with sealer---otherwise you explained how to do this exceptionally well😬

PacTool RS501 Roof Snake Tool or smilar to avoid prying worn shingles up too high for the hammer to get at it. A life saver.
They should call you the “honest roofer”. Good information thank you.
You are a great roofer....I am impressed. Keep up the good work!!!!
Nice work! I'm simply a homeowner, but I learned a ton of practical knowledge in 11 mins.
Appreciate the honesty. I do this as a homeowner and good to see just good common sense is the best.

Excellent info. GC of 15 years here in MI. Thank you for your good work.
Yes, they are not bendable ice-cold, so pick a warmer day. or bring a heat source with you.
Thank You for all you show us. Priceless information for those that can use it, and those having it done.

Got 2 tiny leaks in my garage roof.. drips.. gonna try to tackle this tomorrow.
Thank you for the video
You have the best roofing content. Too bad you're so far away. iId definitely hire you to roof my place.
Wish my doctor was as thorough as you during my examinations. On another note, you're some real eye-candy! I will be on a sugar high for a while.
Greatly appreciate this video as I just had a couple spots show up on the ceiling of my sunroom. Going to get up on the roof and take a look tomorrow.
I must have been doing this too long I seen it as soon as you said about your tools not being in that area
Just did my roof with Maze double hot dipped galvanized ring shank nails. Mmm great product.

How integral is that seal strip? It’s porous to let water shed from the shingle under, right? That’s why you did dabs of that geocell and not a line?

What is the difference between roofing sealant and roofing cement? Is roofing cement OK to reattach shingles at the tar strip? Thank you.
My question is.what do you do if the roof is tiles and not shingles?
Regarding what is causing the roof leak.
thanks

Does extreme wet patch work to seal the nail head?
One question is this a freebie? 😂

Would it be worthwhile removing the popped nail and replacing it with a new nail? Seems like if you don't, it will pop up again.
