    I installed 5.5"/R20 of open cell spray for an unventilated attic under asphalt shingles in 2014 and have had ZERO issues. An unventilated attic with spray foam is "god's" gift to air conditioning in a hot, humid climate. PS I have friends that have had the same type attic installation 18 years with ZERO issues.

    If you use silicone paint on the wood directly make sure the first coat dries then apply second coat and make sure second coat dries . Note that silicone paint applied over shingle roofs ( always 2 coats ) will usually last 10 to 15 years . Read product label on cans . However , most silicone paint is covered by twenty years warranty on painted shingles . If it is painted on wood roof deck with underlayment and shingles over it , who knows how long it will last . Reference my comment on roof fan leak .

  • @nicopolis7377
    @nicopolis7377 Місяць тому

    The roof fan should be nailed directly onto the roof wood not nailed onto shingles . You can nail this 3 ways. : 1 ) Nail the fan directly onto the roof . 2 ) Roll silicone paint on the roof with 2 coats - make sure the 1st coat is dry before applying the 2nd coat . Nail the roof fan onto the roof over the silicone painted area .Make sure the the silicone is painted 3 inches past the roof fan flashing and use neoprene washer shank nails on the flashing . 3 ) Put synthetic underlayment on the roof and nail underlayment and cut the circle out for fan exhaust hole . Nail neoprene washer shank nails into the roof fan flange . Make sure you put another synthetic underlayment over the fan flange that is exposed by cutting a O out of it with a slit at the bottom on the downward slope ( straight cut from the fan tunnel toward the roof edge so water will flow to the downward slope . This slit should be 1 / 4 to 1 / 2 inch wide to let water flow downward to roofs edge . Make sure their is underlayment the entirel length of the slit or you will have a roof leak . Lay synthetic underlayment on rest of exposed wood and nail it down . Make sure you are running underlayment up the roof to the highest part of the roof . Put next underlayment 3 inches over the previous underlayment . The next row of underlayment should always be tucked under the next underlayment 3 inches . Nail NEW shingles onto roof . REMEMBER YOU ARE NAILING NEW SHINGLES FROM EDGE OF ROOF TO HIGHEST POINT OF THE ROOF . Good luck .

    @nicopolis7377 Місяць тому

    The first vent was not put on right . See that a leak occurred on the downslope of the roof where a nail rusted out due to improper placement of the nail .

    I noticed you were nailing directly above the cutout on every shingle. I thought this is the weak point. Preferably a 6-nail pattern sh/be used; namely one at each end and two on either side of the cutout, instead of one directly above it. Great tips, thank you

    If you have attack access. Drill a hole and saw a long the stud and stud to stud around your work area. Go up and remove the blank. Strip away 3 layers above and below the blank and 1 shingle to the sides. Cut a 2×4 nailer and install it along each stud Install a cross support between studs were boards meet to stomp any cushion. Cut your new board. Install. Replace water barrier 1 shingle deep top and bottom and half shingle wide side to side. Install new shingles. It's simple, easy and quickly done in this way.

  • @WickedGod-l7x
    @WickedGod-l7x Місяць тому

    You should install cross support were the plywood meets between studs and a nailer along the stud were the wood meets wood to. This stops all cushion movement.

      Is it over your entire roof? To install felt you would have to remove the existing roof. If you do not have a leak, I would say leave it alone until you either start seeing leaks or until your next replacement, but for now, I would say to at least install felt over the patching area.

    I've been having a hard time finding a contractor that is willing to install a roof vent cap to connect to the 6 inch range hood duct already installed in the attic. Just found a sheet metal company that gave me a quote. However, the quote referenced a "roof jack". I've never heard of it so research lead me to your video. May I ask, what the difference is between a roof jack and the more low profile vent caps. Does the roof jack prevent birds, critters, or insects from getting inside?

    • @AurumRoofing
      @AurumRoofing 2 місяці тому

      The purpose for both style vents are mostly the same, only some regions in the U.S. have different rules with what is allowed over heated vents. For example; in central Texas, we are required by city ordinance to have a roof jack over the kitchen exhaust. I suggest you check your local building codes and comply with their rules and regulations.

    LOVE this video. Looking forward to checking them all out! Not suggesting there is fault in the video when i say -> screws are great for plywood. Ive found better at correcting for uneven studs/ joists. Firms up entire roof, imo in a good way but i could see how maybe faint wiggle from nails was needed to not crack interor drywall. Also holds well to beeswax or tar, and easy to dip and zip. easy to push below surface and fill, and still easy to remove, vs covering nails.

    Hi! What roofing caulk would you recommend for using in Houston? Is there any product on the market that won't dry out, crack and shrivel too quickly on a hot Texas asphalt shingle roof? I am looking at resealing vent flashing, their exposed nails, as well as securing down the parameter of roof edges to minimize first course shingles blow off from strong winds. Your expertise is greatly appreciated!

    So how do you remove shingles that were installed on top of Ice & Water shield. I've tried to remove some shingles and the top half of each shingle is in contact with the roof which has I&W shield, and as I'm sure you are aware the shingle is now bonded like its grown to the I&W. If you know of a technique to remove the shingle from the I&W I will be eternally grateful. Thanks and be safe up there.

    • @AurumRoofing
      @AurumRoofing 3 місяці тому

      There is not an easy way. You would have to peal the ice and water shield off the plywood. Ice and water shield is easiest to remove in hotter temperatures.
