The M1 Mac I would suggest for Most➡ geni.us/jXQtKrO
Please test it with the full M1, in particular 16GB and 8 GPU cores.
Please Max, can you tell how is the actual render quality? I ask because I have a suspicion that the quality of the hardware encs on those M1s is not the same as the quality on the Intel machine.
Could you test this out? Export the exact same video, exact same settings, on both M1 and Intel Macs and check the final render quality?
My question is do you use this laptop to edit when not at work? Do you use it at work? Do you use the M1 iMac 24 inch?
@@markoconnell804 I use it all the time, Angelika uses the 24" iMac as her editing machine, and she is the main editor.
Set your timeline to 1080P. you don’t need a 4K or 8K timeline to export 8K. Resolve will always use the full resolution of the clips. But a 1080 timeline will speed up playback vastly.
Exactly
Wow... I did not know this 🤯🤯🤯
its not always possible
@@johnaart ur an editor?
@@johnaart nice 🙂
Why does anyone even use Premiere anymore? Just stop. Even on my PC, Davinci is flying through editing and rendering about a bajillion times faster. If I were adobe, I'd fire all my programmers and hire ones that know what they're doing. Davinci sure as hell does...
It's comfort. When you've used the same software for many years it can be painful to switch. I've been trying to learn to get off premier and it's not easy.
It’s not quite as fast in some tasks, but it’s faster in others. They both run like 💩 editing 4:2:2 60p h.265 without proxies. It would be hard to beat the speed of editing on Premiere if you know the keyboard shortcuts. Then tack on After Effects, Illustrator, and Audition. And to top it all off they just bought frame.io
Adobe doesn’t know how to code, they know how to buy other products and repackage them. 😅
A huge mount of "free" plugins for Premiere.
If you fired the programers Adobe will go broke. This is what is actually happening: They have an bunch of messy legacy code to support, billions of dollars in revenue link to thousands of clients using 10s of thousand of different hardware configurations with 1000s of different plugins and software versions. You also have to keep the product going and adding features and maintain the extraordinary interoperability between the Adobe suit that is their main strength. So the programers that you want to fire are smart enough (in particular in social terms to handle the frustration ) to keep all that business priorities going on, and still have a good product. So no, you don't have the right expertise to take that kind of decisions you are too emotional.
Gotta respect Davinci Resolve. Free but faster than most other editors most of the time, and forget about compared to Premiere.
DaVinci Resolve is free for commercial use, they don't limit you to personal use in the free version. The Studio version has many extras which professionals appreciate/need, that's about it.
These performance enhancements are valid for the free version as well? I thought device specific hardware encoding was exclusive to Da Vinci Resolve Studio. 🤔
I too want to know about that. I thought I heard that the studio version is better in the sense it uses hardware decoding more/utilizes the GPU more but if these results in the video are valid for the free version as well then I would probably switch from premiere to this easily
How does DaVinci make money with Resolve? Do they hope enough people will upgrade to the paid version?
@@bizmonkey007 They're big in color grading in the professional film industry and that's where the real money comes in. So they can give away the editing software to most people for free and get them used to it.
For a consumer-grade, "ultrabook" laptop to even handle 4.5 K RAW footage sounds like quite a feat. I don't know if I'd want to buy a MacBook Air and go edit hi-res video on it, but it is nice to know that it packs plenty of serious power in such a portable package. Thanks for sharing this.
Awesome video Max - appreciate the time and effort you put into these videos, pretty awesome the speed in Resolve now 🤯
Hey
Hey I’m a colorist and use Resolve. Would love to see a test involving R3D footage, noisy 6K or 8K, with a LUT applied and noise reduction, and maybe basic color. The noise Reduction is what really strains the hardware for colorists, the LUT doesn’t do much, nor the basic color. Film grain is highly variable and not always used, but everyone uses NR and it’s a resource hog. Test Resolve Studio’s built in NR and the Neat Video plugin on separate clips. You can get a dongle for Resolve on eBay or something since you bounce between a lot of computers. That’d really tell us a lot about performance in a real world test. And export it to h.264 if you really want to torture it, but if it’s hardware accelerated it may not matter if you export h264 vs ProRes, which would also be an interesting test.
Hey did you find any information on how it handles NR? That’s the issue I’m having on my MacBook Pro editing c200 raw video I have to add NR and it kill my 2018 MacBook Pro 15inch
Sweet! I’m interested to know how well the embedded Fusion performs. Specifically basic masking and text/ titles. Is that part of the effects that you’re using?
I installed 17.3 on my new iMac M1 8gb ram. And it crashed with Fusion tittles. I fixed it very easily just allocating more memory to fusion and changing graphics process to Metal only. No problems at all since that adjustment. Cheers!
My man asking the right questions in all the videos I also watch 😆🙌
an M1 with 16 gig cannot handle decent fusion clips. with everything turns down, timeline res, proxy media etc it still takes an age to render the cache and still stutters.
@@theslowfoodshow8939 Thanks for sharing your findings. Do you edit often?
@@WarriorsPhoto I do all the text and some graphics in edit tab + color grading and it flies. Resolve 17.2 same air
I really love resolve. Left Pr after 11 years of use!
Same here Joey! :)
the only Resolve issue is the keyframe editing in the Edit page, it’s a mess. Premiere Pro does this job a lot better. In Resolve to make a simple decelerating lens flare effect you have to switch to Fusion. In Resolve Edit page you don’t have a dedicated window to edit keyframes, edit tangents, curvatures, add ease in-out. Not all OFX effects have exposed parameters in the timeline. Fusing the timeline + curve editing was a big mistake. Switching back and forth between Edit and Fusion is a waste of time. Let’s see what Resolve 18 is going to offer for motion graphics.
agreed, keyframws dont alwayx work
Thank you so much for this video. To put it in perspective, I have a Windows workstation custom build (an i7-11700 Intel CPU, 64GB RAM, nVidia GTX 1080 Ti (really old GPU obviously) and I max out at about 72 frames per second when encoding using the Windows version of Resolve, V 17.3 - The M1 Mac machine does about 87-89 frames per second (As shown in Max's video) which is absolutely insane. Max's test came out at 1:23, my result came in at 1:46. So the M1 Mac has an 8-fold less amount of memory than my Windows machine and it's still faster lol
@Muhammad Ehtasam Thanks.
@Muhammad Ehtasam the free version of resolve isnt that gpu intensive thats more the paid version right
That’s intense.
Do you edit often?
@@WarriorsPhoto I do. What's interesting is that my test was for H.265 encoding. Now I upgraded to an RTX 3060 Ti and for H.265 encoding I get slightly faster encoding at about 79-80 frames per second instead of the GTX 1080 Ti which is 72, so not a huge different in speed. That being said, the RTX 3060 Ti is faster with H.264 encoding - I get around 97 frames per second in encoding speed. In Max's video he only got 46 frames per second. It's so weird how when you go from H.264 to H.265 encoding the encoding speeds are so different on the Mac M1 and PC computers. So to sum it up, if you're on the Mac M1, just encode using H.265 (it's twice as fast as H.264 encoding on M1), and if you're on PC, use H.264 to encode.
@@asafblasbergvideographer This is good to know. Apple must be pushing H.265 instead of H.264 for some reason.
What do you upload or produce content for?
That's incredible, I usually just edit the R5 8k raw in a 1080p timeline on my m1 MacBook pro, and then switch to 8k or 4k to render, now it looks like I could maybe even get good playback in a 4k timeline! Also, I'm thinking that the results will be even better on the 16 GB ram model I have. Having upgraded to it from the 8 GB air, I noticed massively better performance for editing 8k raw, and that was before 17.3. I think Resolve is one of few programs that really make the 16 GB of ram worthwhile on the M1 macs.
Windows fans be like: 8GB RAM pfff... while my 32GB takes waaaaaay longer to export on i9 then my M1 small macbook.
Max I went with the Air with 512 and 16Gb and it blew my now ready to sell Dell XPS17 w RTX2060 in all! As it has 16 Gb of RAM it also can do a lot in gaming even. Cheers!
Love the BlackMagic team! Resolve user since 2017✌️
As always Max,
your UA-cams are extremely useful,
Quick Question,
What are the tools you have in the Menubar,
GPU, CPU, etc.
A big Thank You
is this with studio? If not will it be faster with studio?
Just imagine that all software developers are optimizing their software to M1. That's just insane. I'm also using the base model M1 MacBook Air as my mains device
lol...m1?...The M1 is awesome but it is just an amazing first gen, weak throwaway SoC, basically released for optimizing before they release the real sauce. The M1X will have double the CPU High Performance Cores, 4 vs 8.....Quadruple the GPU Cores, 8 vs 32.....Faster Memory (LPDDR5), higher Bus Width, 128bit vs 256bit......The M1X macbook pro 16 will be as powerful as the most powerful windows laptops, with full performance on battery too......It will shred through absolutely anything, AAA Games, 8K Red RAW footage, potential ray tracing support, the high prices apple demands will finally be justified.
@@kninezbanks yeah can't wait for the next gen!
@@GaryJahman I'm waiting for the minute they announce the new ones so I can finally purchase a 16" M1X. It's just not worth it to put the money in my windows Workstation anymore when you see how much more performance + flexibility you get from a freaking mid-tear laptop without cooling. This thing sucks max 65Watts while outperforming my 350-400Watts sucking Workstation without even making a sound... for less money... with apple grade build quality and features.... from apple. I mean come on who would have thought?!?!
@@TheCHEATER900 what a time to be alive 😉
Dough Johnson debunks the myth that the M1 machines are eligible for serious video production. He puts them through their paces and advises waiting for a faster M1X or M2 if you want to get serious about video editing. Check out his findings: ua-cam.com/video/RzhvdRisNZM/v-deo.html
That Video was done before optimised resolve came out. M1 looks capable of handling complex 1080p timelines, and basic 4k.That covers 90% of "serious" productions. For the remaining 10% high end productions, M2 or M3 will get them there.
Hey I'm using Davinci stated recently, and facing some error in export. Can't figure out what's the issue.
@max yuryev.... Thank you bro for your efforts....I wish to do full size movies( like hollywood movies) heavy editing on pc or laptop. Can you suggest me cheapest (under$1000) pc or laptop for movie editing. I will be grateful for that
Does the full version vs free version effect speed at all on the M1?
it depends on the video codec. the full version has improved speed in h264 i believe
@@Max-cy6pb What about ProRes 422?
Great video! I would like to know if the performance of H.265 4:2:2 10bit is better than Premiere pro which you did last time.
I can't believe Max has not passed 200 K subscribers. He has been doing a good job for so long. Google must be shadow banning him like crazy. I bet if he paint his hair pink and added he/him in bio he would be at 2 mill subscribers. Keep up the good work Max and ignore the last sentence. LOL.
You are absolutely correct about the pink hair.....YT is so woke now it makes me want to puke
I thought the same. I remember watching his videos 6/7 years ago. Always great quality and production.. 🤷♂️
Great video. How do you add performance indicators like CPU usage on your toolbar? is that part of the OS or a 3rd party software? Thanks.
I got an ad for Adobe Creative Cloud on this video lol. Coincidence?!?!
Ya it's insane
I have i5 8300h 8GB RAM GTX 1050Ti
And it's heats up like hell at 100°C
Good video. Me, as a video editor, I don't care that much about the export time as much as I do about the performance, lag, playback, scrolling, smoothness, to not feel frustrated while editing.
Finally, great content again and no clickbait!@!@! Thanks!
with davinci resolve how playback canon eos r6 footage? Because on pc its horrible. Unusable codec! Thanks for answer Max.
resolve is amazing. the m1 is amazing. But also overhyped. I have the macbook m1 with 16gb ram and also a pc with a ryzen 3600x old nvidia 970 and fast nvme. On the m1 mac I only use native apple silicon software. Resolve 17.3, Capture one 21, Photoshop, Luminar AI, Visual Studio Code… . I already ran several times into something like a brick wall with the m1, with not enough memory, GPU glitches and memory leaks ... also with Resolve 17.3 and maybe to many nodes. For what it is, the m1 is mind blowing, but my trusty win10 pc is still snappier and often faster and much more reliable. Win10 feels much lighter than osx, less bloat. The problem is that so many pcs are super crappy configured and have bloatware all over.
I have windows and Mac, I love the m1 but windows with the right laptop is better. I really love how on the m1 with a 13 inch display i can edit my videos , and the integration with the iPad pro . That's the main reason I got it.
Nice. But the missing 10Bit H265 is all what counts these days.)
I must be doing something wrong because davinci resolve shits itself when im rendering out my video compared to final cut pro. Getting 18 fps with 2 video footages and png/tiff file. :/
what codec are you using?
@@ThatAverageMTBer video is proress 422 on an t7 ssd
Have you noticed that UA-cam takes over 3 times longer to process a H.265 vs a H.264?
True
It's absolutelly incredible how quick it's exporting de videos! Thanks for sharing
With all of that buffs what's even better is Davinci Resolve 17 is all FREE
I can feel the pain of Adobe subscription in your voice at the end!
Boss what's camera setup or gear you used, if you don't mind sharing. The quality is amazing
I love DaVinci resolve! Even on my two and a half year old PC, exporting to h265 is about four times faster than h264.
I did switched to Davinci resolve over a year ago from Final Cut Pro and I’m so happy
R you using the studio version of Da Vinci resolve which utilizes the hardware way better than the free version or is this insane performance is coming from the free version of da vinci?
That's a good question.

At 2:38 you can see that he has selected the option “Use hardware acceleration if available”, which means that he’s on the payware version.
@@cheese186 plus you can only encode in H.265 on the Studio version
@@linnyunt isn't resolve for mac and windows different? I thought mac included hardware acceleration for free version but with windows you need studio to enable it
These performance enhancements are valid for the free version as well? I thought device specific hardware encoding was exclusive to Da Vinci Resolve Studio. 🤔
free is up to 4k only
For Windows it is, but hardware encoding is Inc in free version on Mac 🙂👍
Anyone here know how fast the rendering speed is for 1080p 60fps H265 for gaming footage on DaVinci Resolve on the M1 MacBook Air with 8 cores?
Nice video! Where did you get those two wall art photos of cameras from?
All hype. 300% faster than previous resolve...na, still the same performance. Max MacBook slows when adding grades as expected. Can't run run a 4k timeline.
The reason Adobe Premiere runs terrible is because it’s Adobe. I dare say Premiere is one of the most unstable pieces of software for video editing. DaVinci just outperforms it in so many ways. My 8 year old laptop running DaVinci outperforms Premiere on my 2-year old PC at work. I have quit using Premiere for that very reason.
Hats off to Blackmagic Design. Already the best NLE on Windows, now also the best on Mac, and with free version to get to grips with it to boot! Between this, the URSA 12k price drop and the Pocket series they are the best company in video right now.
Thanks for sharing this information, it was really help full
Noticed all your test were on battery power with low battery. Would that effect CPU/GPU at all on the machine?
Hi Max, Great video! Was the film you applied a pre-rendered overlay or the fusion filter?
WOW!!!!!!! Thank you Davinci Resolve for this fantastic performance!!!!!!!! nBlessings to MAX for letting us know this great news!!!!
Oh… Here we go! Watching a ton of videos as I setup my M1 MacBook Air!
Over the next couple of years these programs are going to fly with the latest hardware. Looking forward to new hardware and software.
Yep, in'sha'Allah, but that'll be better and faster if all the manufacturers used similar hardware.
Had the same results with my air today, awesome😅
Great set of tests Max. I am not surprised those hardware accelerators in the M1 chips do make a huge difference. I wonder what’s up Apple’s sleeve with the next round of computers?
This is crazy 8 gb ram m1 and holding super strong. I’m btwn final cut and davinci. But davinci is free so it’s kind of a no brainer! Thank you
To be honest this is the best clickbait video title (that is not clickbait) I have ever seen on UA-cam, a good choice of words.
Awesome video as always, thanks
Based on your recommendation I downloaded it on my m1 pro. Its lagging a lot and taking too much memory that I couldn't even do a 2 minute project. My pro is the 16GB version.
I'M DEFINITELY BUYING THIS MAC!!!
Is anyone having an issue on m1 , i am cokor grading 1080 p footage but after a bit intence color grading even it cant display smoothly!!
Really love DaVinci they are so generous with their product
R3D, resolve 17.3 and macbook m1.....sucks!
Undoubtedly M1 macbook air works really well for all 4K footage and colour correction or luts applied. The place where it just completely drops frames in Davinci is when there is a fusion element applied on top of 4K. I have to ballpark my editing coz I cannot see the animation frames. 😭
hey is this same laptop that costs 85k ... m1 macbook air 1
How to download new m1 pro premier pro and final cut cracked version please
It is and it isn’t. Believe me. Rendering etc is fast but my issue is once you have a clip with a lot of nodes, added grain, color correction etc. The playback becomes very choppy and slow. I’m talking as slow as my old 2011 mac running 4K RAW on DR16….
And I’m using the same files 4K raw.
That being said. I’m no expert in the app. Editing and color correction is only a job because it has to be. It’s not my forte.
So. Perhaps I’m doing something wrong. But this is my experience.
Otherwise if it is just some basic color correction it is wicked good. But start adding more to it like, say stabilize or some grain. KARATE CHOP!
Still. For a mac M1 mini. 16gb ram it’s a killer buy. So worth it. I am able to do so much from home in my bedroom now just using that computer and two 4K BenQ monitors it’s unreal. I’m so thankful for this tech. But it still has its flaws.
How does the editing of the H265 10 bit 422 R5-R6 files go in Davinci resolve? I have been shooting 8 bit only and my current mac doesn't playback 10bit 422 h265... Thank you
that's great but m1 is getting on my nerves too much reviews !
Can't waitoto see the M1 pro and M1 max tests. How much unified memory do we need? 32 or 64? willteh pro be enogh or go for the max?
agreed, where are you max ? which mbp are you gonna grab next for us ?!!!??
Why you confusing people?
M1 shines only exporting ungraded timeline.
As soon you load more or less full time line with tens of cuts, with more or less normal color grade, M1 choking.
My 6700k and 1060ti beats M1 5-6 times the speed.
It is great mobile processor. But its not magic. It can not run heavy graphic tasks as good as intel/amd with graphic card.
Tests you show not representing real life scenarios.
@ Aleksey Leonov your comment is interesting as I was wondering today why my 8 yr old PC performed a web test far better than my new MacBook Pro MI .. this test was showing fish from 1-30,000 and fps starting at 60 my PC got to 20,000 at 60 fps. M1 had 60 fps up to 5000 and at 10,000 was 41fps 15,000 was 27 fps and 20,000 was 21 fps..
what am I doing wrong a 20 second 4k clip takes 5 minute in fcpx
1:35 In Germany it's around 1500€. Ouch.
The M1 MacBooks are definitely impressive though. I wouldn't touch a PC with less than 16GB of RAM for anything I do. Seeing what well-optimized software can do with 8GB on macOS is astounding. I've always been impressed by how well software works on macOS. The 2012 MacMini I have at home still blows my original "gaming" PC from 2014 out of the water in 1080p video editing.
Is this the free or paid version of Davinci?
Are u rccommand mac mini m1 for video editing?
Resolve jus opened the gates to hell specifically fr premiere pro...
Tests like these are ok. But after 5 hours of editing.. how does all these tests hold up with a constant workflow. THAT is the real question. my 16 inch macbook is blazing fast before it freaking dies after som hours in editing thermal throtling to another dimension
Is this the free version of Davinci Resolve or Davinci Resolve Studio?
So is this now faster than Gerald Undone’s custom pc with an NVidia RTX 3090 running divinci resolve with nVidia NVENC?
Guys, You dont have to worry about few second, min faster than others. Get use to with one application and be a pro with it.
yeah i did the upgrade n now is kind of glitchy when building your tree in color grading 😞 hope next update fix that is my favorite software for my bmpcc 6k footage
I'd be interested to see how the new imac works with this new update of resolve.
Hi Max. Are you able to export 8K/UHD H.265? I’ve been trying this but it doesn’t seem to export 8K/UHD H.265 at any frame rate, although it will edit 8K/UHD H.265. Cheers, Dave.
I wanna see how it handles Sony A7SIII XAVC S 4K 422 10 BIT.
Now i need a Davinci Resolve “Lite” as an fcp user to switch seamlessly :)
there is a free version for Resolve

Small Question Max can you make a video exporting a very large file like atleast 3hr long video file with it being 4k or 2k at 60fps the source of the video can be anything but don't forget to include some colour grade to it I want to know this because I am planning on buying this or the new m1x version but also debating whether I should do that even though I have a windows laptop with a i7 9th gen with a GTX 1650 so yeah I am heavily confused and I edit game footage and also 10bit camera footage so yeah
On my PC it fly's ...m.y first PC desktop....it's a dream machine
I saw you were running on battery. Wouldn't performance increase if you were plugged in?
nope
DaVinci Resolve UI is heaven! I feel like I wasted my time in Adobe but! the way of saving project are disaster! a deal breaker! I'm really sad that after finding what I wanted it's in the end horrible in the way saving projects! why all these complications?! why it's not saving the project like most editors apps like for example Adobe premiere pro?! or at least making an option to the user in the beginning of first time opening the app to choose between the 2 ways of saving projects! it's really an agony knowing this!
H264 is out in 4K
The M1 is slow as a dog with canon's raw converter, DPP. To convert my R5 photo's, the m1 macbook pro that i use, really heats up.
