Thanks for making this Sara! I've used AE and Premiere Pro for 10+ years, done 2 Netflix shows and 2 big budget documentary productions and 100s of small/medium size projects, and I'm finally done with Adobe! Switching to Davinci for my next project. I'm giving myself 1 year of transition period. Really excited! My tools will be Davinci+Blender. I will replace Photoshop and Illustrator with alternatives too.
@@MatthaisUK I use the Affinity products, Affinity Designer is cool, you just have to get used to it, but the suite has some cool features, 1 time purchase, they make a lot of discounts on their products too. I brought mine at half the actual price. There is also a version for Ipad. Although I have not used it. But the Windows version works fine. It was faster for me than Illustrator.
@@MatthaisUK Affinity Designer is my current pick. I don't do much vector work. My only use case usually is preparing vector art to bring into Blender or AE. I should be able to do that in Affinity Designer.
As someone thinking of switching, do you find the export times in the free version slow? I tried it in early 2022 or thereabouts (I think) and was always upset by export times vs PP on a 12900k and 3090ti. Has it improved etc?

Little tip - Try using "Remote Grade" instead of groups to have all clips from the same piece of footage receive the same grade under the clip node tree. It's an overall much better practice to pick up. After your done editing you can right click on a clip on the color page and click "use remote grade" to turn remote grade on. This will remove the need to jump back and forth mid edit to color page.

Just one thing to note: the free version doesn’t have full GPU acceleration. If you experience poor performance on the free version, the paid version might actually fix all your problems (like it did for me). While this isn’t ideal, I feel like price of Resolve Studio is very reasonable considering that you pay once and you get all the new versions at no extra cost.
If you poke around the internet, you can also get a BlackMagic Speed Editor keyboard/wheel thingy for free with the license (or, if you prefer, a free license with the Speed Editor). Also, the paid version has other pluses beyond the GPU acceleration.
Can you also tell me how to get rid of error 59 on my laptop since you're talking about GPU? I just installed Resolve for the first time. I looked it up and changed the 3D setting to my dedicated GPU instead of integrated GPU already. The second step tells me to change the screen to using the dedicated GPU but I have no idea how to do that. Please help me?!
I don't think the free version is worth the switch for anyone doing moderate to professional work. I got the free version only to realize it's slower than Premiere, does not support above 4K 60fps, and can't work with my 10-bit videos. Colour grading is useless if you're not working with 10-bit videos.
Just a kind heads up: Exposure in Da Vinci Resolve is achieved with either Offset in a colour managed environment, Exposure on the HDR tool or Gain on a node converted to a linear gamma. Highlights and shadows only effect those parts of the tone curve. It can also be done with curves but can easily introduce inconsistency. The same with using a combination of Lift, Gamma and Gain.
Been using Resolve myself for the last 7 months and have been very happy with the software. Converting from Sony Vegas for at home use was a huge change for me. My video editing workflow has certainly been faster and better. I don't see myself ever going back to another video editing software when Resolve has everything I need and even more. I’ve been a commercial editor since 2001. If you think premiere crashes a lot, you’ve never spent weeks of your life on Avid Adrenaline’s tech support. I’m just so happy to see where editing has come. I do miss tape to tape linear editing sometimes. It was such a slow and pure experience. And I miss FCP 7 😂
@@ycal520w9 I'm on Premiere mostly because it was the only viable option post FCP-7 that made sense for larger projects. And I can't give up dynamic link between PR and AE. I've been loving Davinci and think it's doing all the right things, especially now that you can share projects in the cloud with other editors, etc. I cut one 30min doc on FCPx and it was total nightmare to share projects and organize files at that size. My impression is that FCPx is great for people who've never used anything else and are only editing by themselves. Maybe it's better now but I'm still traumatized by using it, lol. I have yet to fully switch to Davinci. I own it and love using it so far. I use Davinci to grade all bigger commercial jobs that need that extra sauce. I also love some of the built in OpenFx too! I miss colored tabs in FCP 7 like you wouldn't believe.
I'm an ancient Avid editor and Baselight colorist and I've gotten into Resolve pretty heavy in the last couple months. Going from Avid to Premiere was a struggle but not a huge one. The biggest struggle is how awfully it works in general and that's not just crashes. Resolve on the other hand has been a breeze to pick up. 2 days of keyboard setting and learning what the functions are called and I cut several trailers not quite as fast as I could on Avid but I saved time elsewhere in not transcoding anything, round tripping to After Effects for graphics, great color grading is built in seamlessly and lots of the little things like hardly ever fussing with the mixer and really convenient quick transitioning between SFX and music ducking. Audio cleanup is easier. Export is head exploding fast. Bin management is way better than Avid or Premiere. The titler is actually useable. Keyframing has proper professional level curves adjustments. Multicam is a breeze. Compound freaking clips, yeah, Avid has that too but no near as elegantly! Really good stuff. Honestly after these couple months, I can cut a trailer or a short video much faster on Resolve if I don't have a graphics guy. If I'm offloading any graphics work to a VFX artist, then I'm still faster purely cutting on an Avid but only barely. The only reason is Resolve's dynamic trim is still pretty clunky and weird. I'm used to it but it's just not the best way of doing things. Too contextually fussy. Needs to be simpler and without using the mouse for everything. That's probably the greatest thing about Avid editing. You need the mouse but most of the fine detail work is done on the keyboard. I've gotten Resolve as close as I can to that but can go no further. Simple things like just hitting the Record screen to choose the B side of a trim and the Source screen to choose the A side of a trim or clicking somewhere between both giving you a roll edit. No need to be precise with mouse or toggling an edit point key, just whip it around the screen and cut at the speed of thought. I shouldn't ever need to look closely at the timeline when rough cutting and feeling the pace. It's nice that Resolve only has 3 edit modes, Normal, Trim and Dynamic trim. Huge wish that clicking on a blank spot on the timeline can disable dynamic trim. Again, I've gotten used to un-toggling it with hotkeys but an option to do that would be incredible. Suffice it to say, Premiere vs Resolve? Resolve hands down. If you need AE, you can just use it like we used to but for simple stuff like titling and minor animations, AND 3D, I just use Fusion. Oh god and sending projects back and forth to clients. .dra files. Genius! AAF to ProTools, yup. VFX tracking, nearly automatic workflow. Oh and I've never once needed to use a proxy even for hour long projects but that's because I have a huge NAS to work from.
i've been using final cut for the past six years because of its ease of use and the ripple editing features. ripple editing is just so nice for editing quickly and efficiently, so final cut and imovie have been a joy for me. i do use resolve in addition, though, just to experiment with other editing styles and color grading. i do intend to switch or just use both in the future, but it hasn't been a feasible option yet.
9:17 About the color grading and any other settings applied on video. Let’s say you have already edited colours on one clip, then you go to the edit tab, click on the video, then command and “c” (copy) and then you go to the next video you want to apple the settings on and you click on the video and press option and “v” and then pops out a small window when you pick which options will apply on the clip and which not. It is very helpful and saves a lots of time and it doesn’t make to remember every category it belongs to, but even the folder thing is good, but this works too.
I love Resolve. Game changer for me. The group grade feature was a new one for me. Awesome! I gotta figure out how to not accidentally delete my entire timeline when I hit delete. The moment I see the beachball I know that I'll have to take a break and wait for it to "delete" everything and then hit undo to bring it back. I'm afraid that I'll lose the timeline eventually.
I did a few months ago. Never going back. There was a learning curve, but totally worth it. On my M2 air, I exported a 57 min 25gb file in 7 minutes. Crazy!!
19:38, if you want just the video on your second monitor while everything else on your main, turn 'dual screen' off and go back to workspace and select 'video clean feed' and select your second monitor.
The game changer for me was the Speed Editor controller. Don't pay $295 for the software, pay $295 for the controller that comes with the software! If you're old like me and remember editing with tape on Panasonic or Sony controllers, this will feel amazing. Trim in and out with the wheel is life changing.
@@jaizon yes, that's why the Speed Editor is a no-brainer. Right now, for example, Adorama and Markertek both have it for $295, so it's like buying the software and getting the controller "free."
1. When using Voice Isolation, to get better performance, you can bounce the audio clips or even a whole track, this is the audio equivalent to rendering out a clip. The original clip will be disabled and put on another audio layer within the same track (enable viewing audio layers in tracks by choosing "View" > "Show Audio Track Layers" ). Audio track layers work like video layers, where you only hear the top-most clip. 2. When using color management, there is actually a precise exposure control in the HDR panel. (Pro tip: using Gain in Linear also gives a very similar result) - Your friendly neighborhood DR trainer :)

Didn't feel like being stuck at my work station one day editing in Davinci Studio. So, I decided to snag my Quest 2 and Air linked to my PC, jumped into my comfy couch in another room and thought just for fun would give it a try while editing in VR and didn't expect to be able to do much at all if anything. To my surprise it actually all went really smooth, completed my video and had fun and comfortability while doing it! The things we are able to do these days :)

I switched over to Resolve about 4 years ago. I love the color grading aspect in Resolve + everything else. I also love that Resolve 's Fusion page and its true3D space versus After Effects 2.5D.
Those are strong tools but I'm not going to switch from Final Cut mainly because I don't want to go back to tracks. I also find Motion more intuitive than Fusion and believe it or not I prefer to grade with that color board and curves in FC. I might use Resolve when I need that magic matte though : ) Great video Sara.

I can't believe that's been 4 years ago, but I followed your channel then, started using Resolve then, and my life has been greatly improved by Resolve's capabilities and your knowledge sharing! Also, probably the best explanation on how to use groups. I was trying to group clips after all the cuts are made, but I didn’t know that you could cut after applying the grade. This will save me a ton of time.
Thank you so much for this video. I just made the jump from Premiere to Resolve and i am loving it but there are few hurdles to learn. This helped me with color so much.
I switched from Premiere to DaVinci and I have no regrets. It is faster in every aspect and more stable + in one program you get everything where with Adobe programs you would need Premiere Pro, After Effects, Audition and Media Encoder. In DaVinci you just switch between the tabs, and to be honest, I enjoy the fusion page the most.
One feature that I use a lot when editing in Premiere is the seamless integration with Audition. I do a lot of audio work (it's sort of my main wheelhouse), and being able to simply right-click a clip and apply EQ, compression, normalization, noise gates, etc, and then have those changes show up in Premiere is one of those features I absolutely love. If Resolve had something like that with, say, Reaper, I'd be very quick to switch. I work for a public university that provides comms, marketing, and creative teams unlimited licenses to the Adobe Creative Suite, and I learned to edit on Premiere Pro way back in 2004 (at a time when my professor was teaching us to edit on Avid and while my classmates and I were discovering Final Cut), so the thought of switching to something new feels a bit intimidating. I'm a big proponent of being proficient in as many different tools as possible, so learning to use Resolve is something that's on my to-do list for this year. And I should probably stop editing my personal stuff on work software (though, since I'm also taking courses, maybe I can call them "student projects"?)
@@saradietschy Fairlight is severely lacking compared to Reaper though, so a fast way to jump between Resolve and Reaper (or other DAW) would be great.
I’ve been using Premiere Pro for 5 years now and soooo sick of the crashing and even files just randomly disappearing. Been thinking seriously about switching to Resolve. This video convinced me to download it and to start playing around with it.
i have a little problem and need a little help here.... using same 4k clip in Premier it can play back smoothly at native resolution，but in Resolve the play back is kind of choppy even when i lower the timeline resolution and play back resolution and use 1/2 timeline proxy its still choppy，i have to use optimize media to make everything smooth，but it takes time and storage space，dont know why its like this because on internet almost everyone says Davinci is smoother than Premier，and my hardware is still good enough i think（r7 5800h rtx3060 laptop）so i really dont know whats the problem here need some help..
I'm having a simular issue in resolve 18.. it shows my 6k open gate 10bit all intra video footage (which it shouldn't because it's 10bit, but it does for a reason). When I try to work with those videos it's very choppy and I'm worried if I buy the full version that it will still be choppy.. we have same laptop specs so I'm worried have you found a solution? Which version do you have?

I’ve been through Adobe Premiere, Final Cut Pro, and the past couple years to Davinci, I love the ease of use though on Final Cut Pro, but the more I use Davinci the more I really start liking it, only issue for me is I have so many plugins for Final Cut that I wish I could use on Davinci, and nodes and color grading still confuse me. I’ll get there though and might just make the big switch!
I’m using both right now but have been editing 5+ years mainly in Adobe. Really haven’t had problems with Adobe crashing on me and love it’s Ai features (transcribe & auto reframe). The Ai features seem more intuitive and I like that auto reframe organizes into a separate folder (small thing but big). Using DaVinci it does seem faster editing but mainly just getting started with a project seems quicker. The layout is intuitive and the effects seem to run so much more smoother then premiere so I like that. I like parts of the audio for DaVinci like the iso and the fairlight page but hate not seeing my Parametric EQ with visual feedback. Now on Adobes side for audio, the Ai stuff they have (not the podcast thing, that’s amazing) I think is pretty garbage and haven’t been able to get really anything useful out of it. I’m holding out hope for Adobe and have the luxury to work with DaVinci so we will see.
After 17yrs of premiere I finally left it about 4months ago for Resolve. Haven't looked back! I'm amazed everyday because every day I edit for a living and love that I don't have to create a macro key to save my project every second in Fear of losing it in a crash.

From 2003 I videoed my son's rugby matches each weekend. I used a whole range of NLEs, trying to discover the stable one. Never got to it. I carried on editing and ended up with a stable edition of Power Director, with few crashes. I liked it, even went subscription without complaint, but I was told by a friend to try Resolve. No cost, ever. What's to lose? I loved it. I bought the Speed Editor (well recommended) and got the Studio upgrade thrown in. Whether Studio's worth the money on its own is something only individuals can say, but for me It's been magic. I try to learn a new process in Resolve every new project, but at this rate I'll be dead before I get it all, and in any case, they'll bring lots more in in that (hopefully long) time. I've had no hangs or crashes, although it does become very slow on heavy renders. I tend to split the video into shorter sections. I'm going to upgrade my GPU when I can afford it. I still use Live Save, but why defeats me.
I'm looking at Resolve, not tried it out yet. The one feature I really love in PPro is the AI music length editor, saves so much time. Interested to see what other AI tools they introduce, but will they be worth the monthly fee?
Thank You Sara! This was a great, explanatory and entertaining video. I have been PC/Premiere Pro user for years. The last project I did was on Sony A7S 4K 10 bit. My PC was build for audio and video work, but I could not scroll one second on Premiere Pro without glitches, dropouts and crashes. I wasted like x10 times more than I should on this project. Rendering 5 minutes clip took like 7-8 hours! That was it! I decided to switch. Since I am planning to buy MacBook Air I will have a chance to work both on PC and MAC. I think that DaVinci is my only way now (but tempted to try Final Cut Pro for a while). One thing that I was scared the most with DaVinci are those nodes. Looks like mix of matemathics and physics. Nothing easy to use. However the way you explained using nodes to colour grade in DaVinci was the first time I did not feel indimidated, but rather excited to move from Adobe Premiere to Resolve.
As a very old Editor , moving from Avid to Adobe per CS , where Adobe was still stable and worked with dedicated cards for rending and playback , on a daily based it become a nightmare to finish a project , we moved over to editing on Grass Valley Edius Pro which we still use on a daily bases today, It was real-time play back, it was stable and cost is not over the top expensive , but what it lacking is some features we missed, but the great thing was we are able to do a round trip into Davinci Resolve either finishing the project in Davinci Resolve it self or back to Edius Pro. This method is no different that use-sing Adobes bug riddle Bridge . Why we have not moved over to Davinci is due to a few things, but for newers users its great program , the benefits far out weigh Adobe, yes Adobe may have a eco system that works together , there are alternatives . you can not go wrong Davinic .

Stability is definitely important! That’s why I switched to using Final Cut and never looked back, one of best friends uses Devinci and loves it! I like learning new programs and seeing behind other people’s work flow it’s cool!
@@TechWandererYT I am working on M1 Max for full year and something plus and I can for sure say it crashed maybe 3 times in that year and that was because of some plugin. It is definitely something on your end.
I just purchased Davinci Resolve and I can't wait to start using it. After using the free version for a few months, I was sold! I also tried their iPad version, which I will be purchasing soon. Now when it comes to Adobe, I have always been a fan of their products, but sadly its sign-in method has been so restricting it kept me out of my job's account when we needed it the most. It's so frustrating that I couldn't even log into its mobile editing app, Adobe Rush. I still will like to try other software from Adobe, but for now I'm all in for Davinci. I purchased the software package that includes the Speed Editor, and I'm excited to start shooting some videos...maybe even finally posting some here on UA-cam. I use Shotcut for my video editing, it's a free and open source video editor with a lot of features to it. The reason why I use it is because I run Linux operating systems. Resolve has a Linux version but I don't have a powerful enough GPU to run it (I plan of fixing that soon). Shotcut is a great NLE that has a ton of features and effects built into it and has a similar workflow to Finalcut and it works one Windows, Mac, and Linux.
I've often heard that some people do most editing inside of Premiere Pro while doing color grading inside of DaVinci. I've made videos in both, from start to finish and honestly the price alone is making me think about switching to DaVinci, though I really do love being able to use After Effects and Premiere.
Thank you for these tips! As a beginner, I want to dive straight in, apply all the fun effects I KNOW I'll want, but sometimes it can cause editing to slow down a bit (sometimes even become a little painful). Love your videos like this!
I live and work on videos in France and the crazy thing is the ONLY reason why Im still with Premiere is the auto generated subtitles. I can export the subtitles and generate translations from french to english. Also I use after effects, so Im pretty daisy chained to that--- but as a professional editor for 20+ years who has used every NLE and even LE I can say hands down Resolve and FCPX are the best Apps out now for NLE.

All future upgrades are free. I purchased Resolve Studio 14 long time ago and I always get the latest version free of charge. All you have to do is to just download the latest version from the support page and activate it with same serial number.
Full time long-form editor here (most my clients are UA-cam channels). I've not heard of anyone I know switching to resolve. I'm sure it works just fine, but I'm not a fan of blanket statements like this because people who aren't yet working professionals, but looking to get into editing, it gives them the wrong mindset about editing and workflow. These are all just tools. When I do TV stuff, I have to be in Avid. Right Now I'm in Premiere for everything else because I like the Adobe infrastructure with After Effects & photoshop as well. (I can work quicker, which is the goal). Again, I'm editing at least 40-50 hrs a week; Avid and Premiere seem to be the most prevalent with my colleges & I right now. I WILL say I appreciate what Resolve offers for free as well. Very impressive, and a great tool for anyone without a budget to start learning & working.
Regarding premere and DaVinci, when I use premere I use the encoder to render and co tinue using premere, how does that concept work in DaVinci? When rendering can you still work on another project
One thing I like about PP is the trackmatte key and it’s so convoluted to do the same in DaVinci. Unless there’s something I missed that does the same thing? But recent issues with PP freeing when accessing the edit/prefs nd file menu is leaning me toward DaVinci now. I like the free version but it’s a tad slow on the effects added to the timeline so looks like the faster paid version is the way to go.
I Love your Vids and this one is on the point. I've used Resolve 90% of the time when I was editing vids, Its still my primary go to for most projects, However recently I've been in Premier because of the reason you stated in video, I'm creating a lot of vertical social media content that I'm often in the graphic tab in Premiere.. Other that that, Long form videos are all DVResolve! Its been my fav and absolutely exceeds expectations with each update.. You Rock Sara! Be Blessed
I'm glad I'm not the only one who thought the new project/import panels in Premiere were jarring. And you mentioned that the UI is flexible in Premiere, which it is... but they keep changing Workspaces so much and none of mine stay the way I put them. Great video, appreciate your perspective!
One reason why I might go ahead and install and try out resolve is to make sure that I am not caught on the wrong foot. If I actually have to stop using premier or an opportunity comes up where resolve is needed. I’m not as good about this, as I used to be, but it is important to be able to use a lot of different kinds of software, if you’re an editor. If you’re only editing your own content, and Contant is your job, then it may not matter as much. But for editors, who that is their job, if anybody offers a free version of their software that you can download and try out, it’s definitely worthwhile to at least be somewhat familiar with how the software works. I’ve had situations where I have gotten jobs because I am able to come in and just do some technical fixes because I can work with different pieces of software. So that’s a worthwhile reason as well.
As someone who primarily uses canva to edit it's a bit intimidating to see how advanced this software is however I'm optimistic that I will be a fast learner with switching over to DaVinci!
Ahh thank you that clip group tip I will use, previously I had just copy’d and pasted my node tree to each clip, which only took a a few seconds but still groups ! That’s excellent ❤
It is a master-stroke to create an app for a mobile 'phone. Now every kid can use the controls from a cinema camera, to jazz up their 'phone footage. I've never used other off line editors, and DR just keeps everything in one program. Getting DR Studio for free, when I bought one of their cameras was a great bonus.
I like Davinci Resolve Studio over Final Cut Pro and Adobe Premiere because I like the color grading feature better. Have you edited in Avid Media Composer or Lightworks?
I switched to Resolve as well about 8 months ago from Vegas Pro and never looked back. There is a learning curve at first but man I'm so glad I stuck with it, Resolve is just so much better and stable than Vegas Pro.
Sarah, maybe you or someone can help me with something. I haven’t messed with resolve in a while because of this. I couldn’t seem to get multi camera editing to work the way I wanted it to. My normal process is this : I will cut everything out of my a roll that I don’t need (-all my stumbling over words, etc), then insert other clips from different locations, etc, then add b roll , then graphics and sound effects. At the beginning of my UA-cam journey, I was trying to use more than one camera. however, when I tried to sync, the cameras, resolve wouldn’t let me cut out the junk footage that I no longer wanted. if I’m using three cameras, I don’t want to have to go through the footage from all three cameras just to get rid of my mistakes. is there a way to sync? All three cameras, have them use my audio from my microphone, then cut all my mistakes out on all three cameras? Thanks for any help
the voice isolation completely takes out the background sound making it sound like you dubbed it in post, having some background sound come through would be better or the ability to adjust it if that doesn't currently exist.
I remember pimping Resolve to many UA-camrs including to this channel and glad you switched. The amount of people who are willing to take years of crashing, poor performance, and bloated updates just to stay with Adobe is astounding. And subscribe for the privilege? Madness! Resolve is the game changer and has been for many years.
This was so good! Just decided to switch mainly because of some of the masking things that seem to be much easier to do in resolve (plus the one time fee). Nodes will be interesting to get back into as well from Shake back in the day as well. Seems like that is a much more efficient way of managing things. Yesterday I saw one about FCP future , years ago people moved to Premiere which copied FCP then now everyone Resolve..the thing in the media universe is people are ship I mean the 'biz' tell you what to do. I've been a MAC user since 95 and FCP since the 3 version and if I don't like The X I don't really want to switch. I saw people who use Resolve on their macs and they seem happy and once again it reminds me early FCP...so I can agree that you must stick to what you master and what you like. It's cool to see people like you who can use different software and test them for us. Thank you
I love Resolve for colour grading over FCP any day. And I’m motivated to learn Fusion too. The main feature I miss from FCP might seem trivial, but is the feature that make me stay in FCP. In FCP, the way you just see the current frame wherever you hover your cursor, and click any place to move the play head there makes me super fast. Where as in Resolve you need to click and drag the tiny timeline ruler. This still makes me significantly faster in FCP. I know the cut page is designed for speedier edits, but I prefer the full edit page, because I rarely edit one layer simple cut jobs that the cut page is designed for.
I switched to DaVinci Resolve a year ago and haven’t looked back. An incredible for the free version! At some point I want to get Studio just to have, as well as to support the work of the creators of it.
I recently worked on a shortfilm project in Premiere with my M1 MBP. Everything went well and business as usual until when I need to export AAF for the sound mixer person ….and little did I know that 2022 version has no AAF option. I was baffled. I went and download the intel version but the export gave me tons of error. Desperate and unable to find any answers I decided to download the up to date version and guess what ?! This version finally support AAF export. I was relieved after 2 days of stress of not being able to deliver what I need to and getting pushed back days behind. So after downloading it and proceed with the export…..same errors occur and desperation kicked in again. I was livid and tired. My last resort that I decided to go was downloading Free version of DR and run XLM from Pr to export AAF there. Guess what? Smooth as butter. After 2 days using DR it was a breath of fresh air. Just everything about it is such breeze and user friendly. Sad to say but good bye Premiere and hello Davinci Resolve.
I use Premiere because I am stuck. Honestly I just haven't had the time to switch, but this holiday season I really want to put in some time to learn and switch to Resolve and Affinity
Although I've used Resolve for color grading commercials and features, I tried to switch to resolve for editing but found audio to be spotty. Didn't like the Sony MXF files for some reason. Wondering if that ever got "resolved". Also use AE a lot so I would miss that integration.
I just started messing with resolve last week coming from finalcut and it was pretty easy once I orientated myself. I got the speed editor and its worth it. I had a hard time with premiere in the past.
You need a decent graphics card to run resolve. Bought speed editor and machine I run premiere on reliably can’t do much more than load resolve. Having to build a new machine.

I use DaVinci mostly for more “artistic editing” where I don’t need many effects. But when it comes to motion design, the integration with Illustrator, Photoshop, dynamic link and etc really makes it hard to fully switch to Resolve. I love both! And honestly I don’t have that many crashes in Premiere Pro as I used to have in the past 🤔 Color grading though, ALWAYS in Resolve
4:06 You just summarized why I'll be sticking with my trusty Final Cut. I'd want to use Davinci only for the more advanced color grading, otherwise Final Cut is all I need. When someone's not selling an 800$ course they can actually give a pretty objective opinion 😀

I've used AE and Premiere Pro for 10+ years, done 2 Netflix shows and 2 big budget documentary productions and 100s of small/medium size projects, and I'm finally done with Adobe! Switching to Davinci for my next project. I'm giving myself 1 year of transition period. Really excited! My tools will be Davinci+Blender. I will replace Photoshop and Illustrator with alternatives too.
Any idea what your alternative for Illustrator will be?

@@MatthaisUK I use the Affinity products, Affinity Designer is cool, you just have to get used to it, but the suite has some cool features, 1 time purchase, they make a lot of discounts on their products too. I brought mine at half the actual price. There is also a version for Ipad. Although I have not used it. But the Windows version works fine. It was faster for me than Illustrator.
@@MatthaisUK Affinity Designer is my current pick. I don't do much vector work. My only use case usually is preparing vector art to bring into Blender or AE. I should be able to do that in Affinity Designer.

As someone thinking of switching, do you find the export times in the free version slow? I tried it in early 2022 or thereabouts (I think) and was always upset by export times vs PP on a 12900k and 3090ti. Has it improved etc?
@@Squidy666 Exports are fast. I'm on M1 Pro and I can export 10 minute videos in less than 1.5 minutes.

Little tip - Try using "Remote Grade" instead of groups to have all clips from the same piece of footage receive the same grade under the clip node tree. It's an overall much better practice to pick up. After your done editing you can right click on a clip on the color page and click "use remote grade" to turn remote grade on. This will remove the need to jump back and forth mid edit to color page.

Just one thing to note: the free version doesn’t have full GPU acceleration. If you experience poor performance on the free version, the paid version might actually fix all your problems (like it did for me). While this isn’t ideal, I feel like price of Resolve Studio is very reasonable considering that you pay once and you get all the new versions at no extra cost.
If you poke around the internet, you can also get a BlackMagic Speed Editor keyboard/wheel thingy for free with the license (or, if you prefer, a free license with the Speed Editor). Also, the paid version has other pluses beyond the GPU acceleration.
Can you also tell me how to get rid of error 59 on my laptop since you're talking about GPU?
I just installed Resolve for the first time.
I looked it up and changed the 3D setting to my dedicated GPU instead of integrated GPU already.
The second step tells me to change the screen to using the dedicated GPU but I have no idea how to do that.

I don't think the free version is worth the switch for anyone doing moderate to professional work. I got the free version only to realize it's slower than Premiere, does not support above 4K 60fps, and can't work with my 10-bit videos. Colour grading is useless if you're not working with 10-bit videos.
Just a kind heads up:
Exposure in Da Vinci Resolve is achieved with either Offset in a colour managed environment, Exposure on the HDR tool or Gain on a node converted to a linear gamma. Highlights and shadows only effect those parts of the tone curve.
It can also be done with curves but can easily introduce inconsistency. The same with using a combination of Lift, Gamma and Gain.
Been using Resolve myself for the last 7 months and have been very happy with the software. Converting from Sony Vegas for at home use was a huge change for me. My video editing workflow has certainly been faster and better. I don't see myself ever going back to another video editing software when Resolve has everything I need and even more.

I’ve been a commercial editor since 2001. If you think premiere crashes a lot, you’ve never spent weeks of your life on Avid Adrenaline’s tech support. I’m just so happy to see where editing has come. I do miss tape to tape linear editing sometimes. It was such a slow and pure experience. And I miss FCP 7 😂

@@ycal520w9 I'm on Premiere mostly because it was the only viable option post FCP-7 that made sense for larger projects. And I can't give up dynamic link between PR and AE. I've been loving Davinci and think it's doing all the right things, especially now that you can share projects in the cloud with other editors, etc. I cut one 30min doc on FCPx and it was total nightmare to share projects and organize files at that size. My impression is that FCPx is great for people who've never used anything else and are only editing by themselves. Maybe it's better now but I'm still traumatized by using it, lol. I have yet to fully switch to Davinci. I own it and love using it so far. I use Davinci to grade all bigger commercial jobs that need that extra sauce. I also love some of the built in OpenFx too! I miss colored tabs in FCP 7 like you wouldn't believe.

I'm an ancient Avid editor and Baselight colorist and I've gotten into Resolve pretty heavy in the last couple months.
Going from Avid to Premiere was a struggle but not a huge one. The biggest struggle is how awfully it works in general and that's not just crashes.
Resolve on the other hand has been a breeze to pick up. 2 days of keyboard setting and learning what the functions are called and I cut several trailers not quite as fast as I could on Avid but I saved time elsewhere in not transcoding anything, round tripping to After Effects for graphics, great color grading is built in seamlessly and lots of the little things like hardly ever fussing with the mixer and really convenient quick transitioning between SFX and music ducking. Audio cleanup is easier. Export is head exploding fast. Bin management is way better than Avid or Premiere. The titler is actually useable. Keyframing has proper professional level curves adjustments. Multicam is a breeze. Compound freaking clips, yeah, Avid has that too but no near as elegantly! Really good stuff.
Honestly after these couple months, I can cut a trailer or a short video much faster on Resolve if I don't have a graphics guy. If I'm offloading any graphics work to a VFX artist, then I'm still faster purely cutting on an Avid but only barely. The only reason is Resolve's dynamic trim is still pretty clunky and weird. I'm used to it but it's just not the best way of doing things. Too contextually fussy. Needs to be simpler and without using the mouse for everything. That's probably the greatest thing about Avid editing. You need the mouse but most of the fine detail work is done on the keyboard. I've gotten Resolve as close as I can to that but can go no further. Simple things like just hitting the Record screen to choose the B side of a trim and the Source screen to choose the A side of a trim or clicking somewhere between both giving you a roll edit. No need to be precise with mouse or toggling an edit point key, just whip it around the screen and cut at the speed of thought. I shouldn't ever need to look closely at the timeline when rough cutting and feeling the pace. It's nice that Resolve only has 3 edit modes, Normal, Trim and Dynamic trim. Huge wish that clicking on a blank spot on the timeline can disable dynamic trim. Again, I've gotten used to un-toggling it with hotkeys but an option to do that would be incredible.
Suffice it to say, Premiere vs Resolve? Resolve hands down. If you need AE, you can just use it like we used to but for simple stuff like titling and minor animations, AND 3D, I just use Fusion.
Oh god and sending projects back and forth to clients. .dra files. Genius! AAF to ProTools, yup. VFX tracking, nearly automatic workflow. Oh and I've never once needed to use a proxy even for hour long projects but that's because I have a huge NAS to work from.
i've been using final cut for the past six years because of its ease of use and the ripple editing features. ripple editing is just so nice for editing quickly and efficiently, so final cut and imovie have been a joy for me. i do use resolve in addition, though, just to experiment with other editing styles and color grading. i do intend to switch or just use both in the future, but it hasn't been a feasible option yet.
9:17 About the color grading and any other settings applied on video. Let’s say you have already edited colours on one clip, then you go to the edit tab, click on the video, then command and “c” (copy) and then you go to the next video you want to apple the settings on and you click on the video and press option and “v” and then pops out a small window when you pick which options will apply on the clip and which not. It is very helpful and saves a lots of time and it doesn’t make to remember every category it belongs to, but even the folder thing is good, but this works too.
I love Resolve. Game changer for me. The group grade feature was a new one for me. Awesome!
I gotta figure out how to not accidentally delete my entire timeline when I hit delete. The moment I see the beachball I know that I'll have to take a break and wait for it to "delete" everything and then hit undo to bring it back. I'm afraid that I'll lose the timeline eventually.
I did a few months ago. Never going back. There was a learning curve, but totally worth it.
On my M2 air, I exported a 57 min 25gb file in 7 minutes. Crazy!!
19:38, if you want just the video on your second monitor while everything else on your main, turn 'dual screen' off and go back to workspace and select 'video clean feed' and select your second monitor.
The game changer for me was the Speed Editor controller. Don't pay $295 for the software, pay $295 for the controller that comes with the software! If you're old like me and remember editing with tape on Panasonic or Sony controllers, this will feel amazing. Trim in and out with the wheel is life changing.
I guest most hardware you buy from them comes with a license, am I right? Those panels sure seem impressive

1. When using Voice Isolation, to get better performance, you can bounce the audio clips or even a whole track, this is the audio equivalent to rendering out a clip. The original clip will be disabled and put on another audio layer within the same track (enable viewing audio layers in tracks by choosing "View" > "Show Audio Track Layers" ). Audio track layers work like video layers, where you only hear the top-most clip.
2. When using color management, there is actually a precise exposure control in the HDR panel. (Pro tip: using Gain in Linear also gives a very similar result)

Didn't feel like being stuck at my work station one day editing in Davinci Studio. So, I decided to snag my Quest 2 and Air linked to my PC, jumped into my comfy couch in another room and thought just for fun would give it a try while editing in VR and didn't expect to be able to do much at all if anything. To my surprise it actually all went really smooth, completed my video and had fun and comfortability while doing it! The things we are able to do these days :)

I switched over to Resolve about 4 years ago. I love the color grading aspect in Resolve + everything else. I also love that Resolve 's Fusion page and its true3D space versus After Effects 2.5D.
Those are strong tools but I'm not going to switch from Final Cut mainly because I don't want to go back to tracks. I also find Motion more intuitive than Fusion and believe it or not I prefer to grade with that color board and curves in FC. I might use Resolve when I need that magic matte though : ) Great video Sara.

I was just getting into video editing when you posted the original "Premier/Resolve" video. I can't believe that's been 4 years ago, but I followed your channel then, started using Resolve then, and my life has been greatly improved by Resolve's capabilities and your knowledge sharing! Thanks for all the videos and keep up the fantastic channel.
Also, probably the best explanation on how to use groups. I was trying to group clips after all the cuts are made, but I didn’t know that you could cut after applying the grade. This will save me a ton of time.
I mostly make short form content so the efficiency/magnetic timeline of Final Cut is great for me
Resolve has the cutpage that works like magnetic timeline but you can edit really fast with shortcuts in Resolve as well, I do as my job.
Thank you so much for this video. I just made the jump from Premiere to Resolve and i am loving it but there are few hurdles to learn. This helped me with color so much.
I switched from Premiere to DaVinci and I have no regrets. It is faster in every aspect and more stable + in one program you get everything where with Adobe programs you would need Premiere Pro, After Effects, Audition and Media Encoder. In DaVinci you just switch between the tabs, and to be honest, I enjoy the fusion page the most.

One feature that I use a lot when editing in Premiere is the seamless integration with Audition. I do a lot of audio work (it's sort of my main wheelhouse), and being able to simply right-click a clip and apply EQ, compression, normalization, noise gates, etc, and then have those changes show up in Premiere is one of those features I absolutely love. If Resolve had something like that with, say, Reaper, I'd be very quick to switch.
I work for a public university that provides comms, marketing, and creative teams unlimited licenses to the Adobe Creative Suite, and I learned to edit on Premiere Pro way back in 2004 (at a time when my professor was teaching us to edit on Avid and while my classmates and I were discovering Final Cut), so the thought of switching to something new feels a bit intimidating. I'm a big proponent of being proficient in as many different tools as possible, so learning to use Resolve is something that's on my to-do list for this year. And I should probably stop editing my personal stuff on work software (though, since I'm also taking courses, maybe I can call them "student projects"?)
Look up resolve Fairlight! Really great audio editing right in resolve. It’s just another tab 🙏🏻
Resolve has the best integration/suite out there. As mentioned, Fairlight is included and keeps you in the UI with one click.

i have a little problem and need a little help here.... using same 4k clip in Premier it can play back smoothly at native resolution，but in Resolve the play back is kind of choppy even when i lower the timeline resolution and play back resolution and use 1/2 timeline proxy its still choppy，i have to use optimize media to make everything smooth，but it takes time and storage space，dont know why its like this because on internet almost everyone says Davinci is smoother than Premier，and my hardware is still good enough i think（r7 5800h rtx3060 laptop）so i really dont know whats the problem here need some help..
I'm having a simular issue in resolve 18.. it shows my 6k open gate 10bit all intra video footage (which it shouldn't because it's 10bit, but it does for a reason). When I try to work with those videos it's very choppy and I'm worried if I buy the full version that it will still be choppy.. we have same laptop specs so I'm worried have you found a solution? Which version do you have?

I’ve been through Adobe Premiere, Final Cut Pro, and the past couple years to Davinci, I love the ease of use though on Final Cut Pro, but the more I use Davinci the more I really start liking it, only issue for me is I have so many plugins for Final Cut that I wish I could use on Davinci, and nodes and color grading still confuse me. I’ll get there though and might just make the big switch!

I’m using both right now but have been editing 5+ years mainly in Adobe. Really haven’t had problems with Adobe crashing on me and love it’s Ai features (transcribe & auto reframe). The Ai features seem more intuitive and I like that auto reframe organizes into a separate folder (small thing but big). Using DaVinci it does seem faster editing but mainly just getting started with a project seems quicker. The layout is intuitive and the effects seem to run so much more smoother then premiere so I like that. I like parts of the audio for DaVinci like the iso and the fairlight page but hate not seeing my Parametric EQ with visual feedback. Now on Adobes side for audio, the Ai stuff they have (not the podcast thing, that’s amazing) I think is pretty garbage and haven’t been able to get really anything useful out of it. I’m holding out hope for Adobe and have the luxury to work with DaVinci so we will see.
After 17yrs of premiere I finally left it about 4months ago for Resolve. Haven't looked back! I'm amazed everyday because every day I edit for a living and love that I don't have to create a macro key to save my project every second in Fear of losing it in a crash.

From 2003 I videoed my son's rugby matches each weekend. I used a whole range of NLEs, trying to discover the stable one. Never got to it. I carried on editing and ended up with a stable edition of Power Director, with few crashes. I liked it, even went subscription without complaint, but I was told by a friend to try Resolve. No cost, ever. What's to lose? I loved it. I bought the Speed Editor (well recommended) and got the Studio upgrade thrown in. Whether Studio's worth the money on its own is something only individuals can say, but for me It's been magic. I try to learn a new process in Resolve every new project, but at this rate I'll be dead before I get it all, and in any case, they'll bring lots more in in that (hopefully long) time. I've had no hangs or crashes, although it does become very slow on heavy renders. I tend to split the video into shorter sections. I'm going to upgrade my GPU when I can afford it. I still use Live Save, but why defeats me.

I'm looking at Resolve, not tried it out yet. The one feature I really love in PPro is the AI music length editor, saves so much time. Interested to see what other AI tools they introduce, but will they be worth the monthly fee?

Thank You Sara! This was a great, explanatory and entertaining video. I have been PC/Premiere Pro user for years. The last project I did was on Sony A7S 4K 10 bit. My PC was build for audio and video work, but I could not scroll one second on Premiere Pro without glitches, dropouts and crashes. I wasted like x10 times more than I should on this project. Rendering 5 minutes clip took like 7-8 hours! That was it! I decided to switch. Since I am planning to buy MacBook Air I will have a chance to work both on PC and MAC. I think that DaVinci is my only way now (but tempted to try Final Cut Pro for a while). One thing that I was scared the most with DaVinci are those nodes. Looks like mix of matemathics and physics. Nothing easy to use. However the way you explained using nodes to colour grade in DaVinci was the first time I did not feel indimidated, but rather excited to move from Adobe Premiere to Resolve.
As a very old Editor , moving from Avid to Adobe per CS , where Adobe was still stable and worked with dedicated cards for rending and playback , on a daily based it become a nightmare to finish a project , we moved over to editing on Grass Valley Edius Pro which we still use on a daily bases today, It was real-time play back, it was stable and cost is not over the top expensive , but what it lacking is some features we missed, but the great thing was we are able to do a round trip into Davinci Resolve either finishing the project in Davinci Resolve it self or back to Edius Pro. This method is no different that use-sing Adobes bug riddle Bridge . Why we have not moved over to Davinci is due to a few things, but for newers users its great program , the benefits far out weigh Adobe, yes Adobe may have a eco system that works together , there are alternatives . you can not go wrong Davinic .

Stability is definitely important! That’s why I switched to using Final Cut and never looked back, one of best friends uses Devinci and loves it! I like learning new programs and seeing behind other people’s work flow it’s cool!
Final Cut crashes on my M1 Max all the time. It's crazy.

@@TechWandererYT I am working on M1 Max for full year and something plus and I can for sure say it crashed maybe 3 times in that year and that was because of some plugin. It is definitely something on your end.
I just purchased Davinci Resolve and I can't wait to start using it. After using the free version for a few months, I was sold! I also tried their iPad version, which I will be purchasing soon. Now when it comes to Adobe, I have always been a fan of their products, but sadly its sign-in method has been so restricting it kept me out of my job's account when we needed it the most. It's so frustrating that I couldn't even log into its mobile editing app, Adobe Rush. I still will like to try other software from Adobe, but for now I'm all in for Davinci. I purchased the software package that includes the Speed Editor, and I'm excited to start shooting some videos...maybe even finally posting some here on UA-cam. I still use both. The integration between apps in Creative Cloud is pretty insane. But I use Resolve for my big videos. It’s just more fun.
I use Shotcut for my video editing, it's a free and open source video editor with a lot of features to it. The reason why I use it is because I run Linux operating systems. Resolve has a Linux version but I don't have a powerful enough GPU to run it (I plan of fixing that soon).
Shotcut is a great NLE that has a ton of features and effects built into it and has a similar workflow to Finalcut and it works one Windows, Mac, and Linux.
In your HDR tab in color grading, your global adjustment is an exposure adjustment, so -1 on the global is stopping down 1 f stop.

I've often heard that some people do most editing inside of Premiere Pro while doing color grading inside of DaVinci. I've made videos in both, from start to finish and honestly the price alone is making me think about switching to DaVinci, though I really do love being able to use After Effects and Premiere.
Thank you for these tips! As a beginner, I want to dive straight in, apply all the fun effects I KNOW I'll want, but sometimes it can cause editing to slow down a bit (sometimes even become a little painful). Love your videos like this!
I live and work on videos in France and the crazy thing is the ONLY reason why Im still with Premiere is the auto generated subtitles. I can export the subtitles and generate translations from french to english. Also I use after effects, so Im pretty daisy chained to that--- but as a professional editor for 20+ years who has used every NLE and even LE I can say hands down Resolve and FCPX are the best Apps out now for NLE.

All future upgrades are free. I purchased Resolve Studio 14 long time ago and I always get the latest version free of charge. All you have to do is to just download the latest version from the support page and activate it with same serial number.
Full time long-form editor here (most my clients are UA-cam channels). I've not heard of anyone I know switching to resolve. I'm sure it works just fine, but I'm not a fan of blanket statements like this because people who aren't yet working professionals, but looking to get into editing, it gives them the wrong mindset about editing and workflow. These are all just tools. When I do TV stuff, I have to be in Avid. Right Now I'm in Premiere for everything else because I like the Adobe infrastructure with After Effects & photoshop as well. (I can work quicker, which is the goal).
Again, I'm editing at least 40-50 hrs a week; Avid and Premiere seem to be the most prevalent with my colleges & I right now. I WILL say I appreciate what Resolve offers for free as well. Very impressive, and a great tool for anyone without a budget to start learning & working.
Regarding premere and DaVinci, when I use premere I use the encoder to render and co tinue using premere, how does that concept work in DaVinci? When rendering can you still work on another project

One thing I like about PP is the trackmatte key and it’s so convoluted to do the same in DaVinci. Unless there’s something I missed that does the same thing? But recent issues with PP freeing when accessing the edit/prefs nd file menu is leaning me toward DaVinci now. I like the free version but it’s a tad slow on the effects added to the timeline so looks like the faster paid version is the way to go.
I Love your Vids and this one is on the point. I've used Resolve 90% of the time when I was editing vids, Its still my primary go to for most projects, However recently I've been in Premier because of the reason you stated in video, I'm creating a lot of vertical social media content that I'm often in the graphic tab in Premiere.. Other that that, Long form videos are all DVResolve! Its been my fav and absolutely exceeds expectations with each update.. You Rock Sara! Be Blessed
I'm glad I'm not the only one who thought the new project/import panels in Premiere were jarring. And you mentioned that the UI is flexible in Premiere, which it is... but they keep changing Workspaces so much and none of mine stay the way I put them. Great video, appreciate your perspective!
One reason why I might go ahead and install and try out resolve is to make sure that I am not caught on the wrong foot. If I actually have to stop using premier or an opportunity comes up where resolve is needed.
I’m not as good about this, as I used to be, but it is important to be able to use a lot of different kinds of software, if you’re an editor. If you’re only editing your own content, and Contant is your job, then it may not matter as much. But for editors, who that is their job, if anybody offers a free version of their software that you can download and try out, it’s definitely worthwhile to at least be somewhat familiar with how the software works. I’ve had situations where I have gotten jobs because I am able to come in and just do some technical fixes because I can work with different pieces of software. So that’s a worthwhile reason as well.
As someone who primarily uses canva to edit it's a bit intimidating to see how advanced this software is however I'm optimistic that I will be a fast learner with switching over to DaVinci!
Ahh thank you that clip group tip I will use, previously I had just copy’d and pasted my node tree to each clip, which only took a a few seconds but still groups ! That’s excellent ❤
It is a master-stroke to create an app for a mobile 'phone. Now every kid can use the controls from a cinema camera, to jazz up their 'phone footage. I've never used other off line editors, and DR just keeps everything in one program. Getting DR Studio for free, when I bought one of their cameras was a great bonus.
I like Davinci Resolve Studio over Final Cut Pro and Adobe Premiere because I like the color grading feature better. Have you edited in Avid Media Composer or Lightworks?
I use the photoshop editing feature all the time, and I have a huge history of premiere projects. Any way to import them into Resolve?

I switched to Resolve as well about 8 months ago from Vegas Pro and never looked back. There is a learning curve at first but man I'm so glad I stuck with it, Resolve is just so much better and stable than Vegas Pro.
Sarah, maybe you or someone can help me with something. I haven’t messed with resolve in a while because of this. I couldn’t seem to get multi camera editing to work the way I wanted it to.
My normal process is this :
I will cut everything out of my a roll that I don’t need (-all my stumbling over words, etc), then insert other clips from different locations, etc, then add b roll , then graphics and sound effects.
At the beginning of my UA-cam journey, I was trying to use more than one camera. however, when I tried to sync, the cameras, resolve wouldn’t let me cut out the junk footage that I no longer wanted. if I’m using three cameras, I don’t want to have to go through the footage from all three cameras just to get rid of my mistakes. is there a way to sync? All three cameras, have them use my audio from my microphone, then cut all my mistakes out on all three cameras?

the voice isolation completely takes out the background sound making it sound like you dubbed it in post, having some background sound come through would be better or the ability to adjust it if that doesn't currently exist.
I remember pimping Resolve to many UA-camrs including to this channel and glad you switched. The amount of people who are willing to take years of crashing, poor performance, and bloated updates just to stay with Adobe is astounding. And subscribe for the privilege? Madness! Resolve is the game changer and has been for many years.
This was so good! Just decided to switch mainly because of some of the masking things that seem to be much easier to do in resolve (plus the one time fee). Nodes will be interesting to get back into as well from Shake back in the day as well. Seems like that is a much more efficient way of managing things. Excited to give it a try and thanks for all the tips! About to check out the keyboard shortcuts now
I think, for the most part, I like Resolve more. I used Premiere for a while and stability and cost was big thing. I just got tired off it.

Yesterday I saw one about FCP future , years ago people moved to Premiere which copied FCP then now everyone Resolve..the thing in the media universe is people are ship I mean the 'biz' tell you what to do. I've been a MAC user since 95 and FCP since the 3 version and if I don't like The X I don't really want to switch. I saw people who use Resolve on their macs and they seem happy and once again it reminds me early FCP...so I can agree that you must stick to what you master and what you like. It's cool to see people like you who can use different software and test them for us. Thank you

I love Resolve for colour grading over FCP any day. And I’m motivated to learn Fusion too.
The main feature I miss from FCP might seem trivial, but is the feature that make me stay in FCP. In FCP, the way you just see the current frame wherever you hover your cursor, and click any place to move the play head there makes me super fast. Where as in Resolve you need to click and drag the tiny timeline ruler. This still makes me significantly faster in FCP. I know the cut page is designed for speedier edits, but I prefer the full edit page, because I rarely edit one layer simple cut jobs that the cut page is designed for.
I switched to DaVinci Resolve a year ago and haven’t looked back. An incredible for the free version! At some point I want to get Studio just to have, as well as to support the work of the creators of it.
I recently worked on a shortfilm project in Premiere with my M1 MBP. Everything went well and business as usual until when I need to export AAF for the sound mixer person ….and little did I know that 2022 version has no AAF option. I was baffled. I went and download the intel version but the export gave me tons of error. Desperate and unable to find any answers I decided to download the up to date version and guess what ?! This version finally support AAF export. I was relieved after 2 days of stress of not being able to deliver what I need to and getting pushed back days behind. So after downloading it and proceed with the export…..same errors occur and desperation kicked in again. I was livid and tired. My last resort that I decided to go was downloading Free version of DR and run XLM from Pr to export AAF there. Guess what? Smooth as butter. After 2 days using DR it was a breath of fresh air. Just everything about it is such breeze and user friendly. Sad to say but good bye Premiere and hello Davinci Resolve.
I use Premiere because I am stuck. Honestly I just haven't had the time to switch, but this holiday season I really want to put in some time to learn and switch to Resolve and Affinity

Although I've used Resolve for color grading commercials and features, I tried to switch to resolve for editing but found audio to be spotty. Didn't like the Sony MXF files for some reason. Wondering if that ever got "resolved". Also use AE a lot so I would miss that integration.
I just started messing with resolve last week coming from finalcut and it was pretty easy once I orientated myself. I got the speed editor and its worth it. I had a hard time with premiere in the past.
You need a decent graphics card to run resolve. Bought speed editor and machine I run premiere on reliably can’t do much more than load resolve. Having to build a new machine.

I use DaVinci mostly for more “artistic editing” where I don’t need many effects. But when it comes to motion design, the integration with Illustrator, Photoshop, dynamic link and etc really makes it hard to fully switch to Resolve. I love both! And honestly I don’t have that many crashes in Premiere Pro as I used to have in the past 🤔 Color grading though, ALWAYS in Resolve
You can import PSD files in the Fusion page and edit the layers there...
When you're in the Fusion page, in the top menu click Fusion, then Import, then choose PSD
Every day I think about switching... still holding onto the future of Premiere but man, I love grading in Resolve.

I'd want to use Davinci only for the more advanced color grading, otherwise Final Cut is all I need.
