I use the base spec for office work while working in the office or remotely. I easily get a full day out of it with 50-60% charge left at the end of the day. This after Teams, Chrome, Edge, Word, Excel, PPT, Preview, Apple Notes, Calendar, Messages, Messenger and Spotify all running non-stop. The screen is great with colour that pops. Above all it never misses a beat and is ultra light and portable. Almost a perfect laptop.
This is the kind of work I do, and would have loved a review of the MBA M1 for someone who does the same work and how it'll fair for more years to come.
Two years later the screen still impressed me every single day- a pleasant feature apple could have never conveyed in any commercials. It’s really nice and with the speakers going too.. pinches way above its weight for sure.

I bought one Dec 2020 and haven't regretted a thing. Currently typing on it now. Sitting at 89% battery "life" and it still gives me a few days on a single charge. Probably won't upgrade until they release an air with a 120hz OLED display

Been using a base M1 MacBook Air for a few weeks now (new for $750!). Replacing a 2015 13" MBP. It's a couch serfing computer and one to take on the road. I'm frankly amazed with the computer. Appreciate its quietness and long battery life. Touch ID is unexpectedly convenient. I can edit my 4k GoPro videos on it if needed. The MBP could not play my GoPro videos, instigating the upgrade. It's so snappy and light compared to the 2015 MBP I find myself using it all the time, where my 2015 often sat unused unless I really needed it. I think I'll keep using this until base M3's drop to lows in a few years.
@@chuchumanga7948 I went with the base 8/256. This would be too small a config for my main computer. For my modest needs as a 2nd computer it's been great.
I own the 16gb ram 256gb ssd MBA M1 and it has replaced my older windows laptop and replaced my desktop computer. This fanless MBA is blazing fast still and I love using it docked through a usb C hub and hdmi-out to a 1440p monitor. Hopefully a good deal on a 4k or 5k monitor appears in the future but for now 1440p is fine with MacOS. Also, discharging the battery to around 80% and then plugging a 30w USB C Charger or higher, the M1 MBA will begin using the AC adapter as the power source instead of the battery, such a cool setting. Not sure how it will affect battery health in the long term though.

Yep, I have an M1 MacBook Air configured with 8-core graphics, 512 GB SSD and configured with 16 GB of RAM (bought it in spring 2021), and it's definitely currently my fastest and most powerful Mac on hand (since it's my only Apple Silicon Mac I currently own), making it great for video editing. I remember being blown away at first by how the M1 Air would render a video project in only a third of the time it'd take a similar project to render on my 2012 quad-core i7 Mac Mini (and that, too, had 16 GB of RAM and an internal SSD replacing the spinning hard drive). It was even great to have a Mac laptop I could run the latest Adobe Creative suite on with minimal fuss! Hopefully some time early next year I will be buying an M2 Pro-equipped Mac Mini with 32 GB of RAM and a 1 TB SSD to replace that quad-core i7 Mac Mini and become my main desktop, taking my Mac computing power to the next level, while I still use the M1 Air when I'm on the go.
I'm thinking of buying the specs of your MBA m1 with 16gb/1tb for me. Would you still recommend this for the end of 2023? I will be using it for video editing work using Adobe Premiere for FB/UA-cam ads. More or less 1-3 layers of footage with captions but no heavy plugins and color correction. Still using the M1 Air with 16GB of RAM and 256GB of storage. Hasn't lost its step in the least. Thought about upgrading to another MB Air with either 512GB or a TB of storage, but I haven't even filled HALF of the current storage in my M1 Air. I'm keeping this as long as I can.
I mean I'm currently using the base model to emulate, capture, and edit Gameboy, Gameboy Advance, PS1, and Sega Saturn footage. So, like, it does work pretty good for a base model. I couldn't really ask for more at the $649 I paid.
1:54 fun fact that’s actually one reason why I don’t like the Air but like the Pro. now I’m a pretty big guy so I’m OK bulky and I actually like bulky and big. I don’t think I’m compensating for anything. I just like it like that. Also, one day I noticed about having a big bulky laptop like my 23 16 inch MacBook Pro is the fact that I know it’s in my bag and not forgotten or stolen.😅
Regarding the speakers, I haven't heard any other macbook speakers or other premium windows laptops. I have usually used laptops that are slightly below the price point of the MBA. As you said video editing drastically downgrades my battery backup time in a day, i am confused i have two options either m1 air with gb ram or i9 specked up 16 inches, 16 inches screen estate is amazing because of the sheer size, m1 air base model is how much faster than this i9, how much performance am i gaining or loosing choosing either of these, main software i use is fcp, need to edit 4k iphone footages and occasional 10 bit footage from a camera but mostly 8 bit , m1 pros are beast i do agree, but in the second hand market i am getting these models in a similar price range,i do own a 13 inch macbook pro 2012 i edit my small instagram reel in 4k without any issue, but i would like more screen if possible but i how much am i loosing in this.

Complicated motion graphics or effects compositing in After Effects can definitely be challenging on the MacBook Air. The same goes for complex timelines in Premiere that involve a lot of demanding footage and or effects.
agree, really hard not to recommend this beast. I've been using this for 3 years, waiting for the battery to drop to 80% to get free battery replacement, but it keeps standing at 84%. LOL
If it had HDMI and two or three USB 2.0/3.0 along with the two USB C; this would've been an 11/10. For now your typical storage-enjoying editor is going to find themselves weighed down by the dongle mess that comes with this model.
Great video! Thanks for making it so thorough and helpful how many GPU cores does the model you tested have, 7 or 8? Does that number even matter in actual performance?

very good and insightful video. thank you.
Finally got the M1 Macbook Air and I gotta say! It's blazing for all I need it to do. I was shocked!
This is me coming from a 2012 Intel MacBook Pro.
I think this MacBook Air is suited for videographers who shoot videos on iPhone. Airdrop and iCloud are the reason this MacBook lacks sd card reader
yeah and I never use the headphone jack as I use AirPods.
Thanks but can it Run after effects ? As I am planning to learn it and level up my editing with it. And is it worth it in 2024 or should I go with any windows laptop in the similar price range ? Thanks a ton for the video. Loved it
but you can work wound that i have a ubs port with 4 ubs sockets on my del gaming laptop
My problem is knowing how it performs in fusion, fusion humbles computers
Is it good for video editing in 4k?
nice video very detailed
Will the base model work for reviewing videos using Premier Pro?
Or will I still need 16GB RAM?
is davinci resole all free and if not u r using free or paid one ?? if anyone else know can tell..will be helpful.
there is a free and a paid version while downloading it
I hate that i want one so bad. I cant bring myself to buy a gaming laptop for editing. The 8gb of ram kills me for the price, but im very tempted still . Id love to have a lightweight system i can take with me to edit captured footage on the fly
Hi,
Shoul i get a USED 13 or 15 inch 16gb Air ? M1 from 2020 with 90 % Batterie? With 800 EURO
What you suggest?
Excellent video!
Can i ask,, where can i downlaod premiere installer ?
I have recently purchased MBA m1 but I am facing an issue that is it is not opening with one hand...I have to use two hands..one in base and one in the lid...is this really an issue?....because its my first mac and macbook are known to open with one hand out of the box
take back to apple, that is not supposed to happen and if its new then it might be covered under warranty
Great and informative videos, one question from me is, will it render 50 Raw Image (24MP) smoothly on Lightroom, planning to use it for photo editing. Thank you
Bought new for £830 in June…
It’s a great computer for the money
16GB/256 for future proofing is the best choice for yr budget
what do you mean by future proofing?
@@voidinsoundsThe ability to keep the device as current as possible.
I would argue 256 GB isn’t “futureproof” since thats not a lot of Storage by todays standards. 512 Gb is.
So if you are working only full hd for instagram and low buget youtube videos is great. :)
As you said video editing drastically downgrades my battery backup time in a day, i am confused i have two options either m1 air with gb ram or i9 specked up 16 inches, 16 inches screen estate is amazing because of the sheer size, m1 air base model is how much faster than this i9, how much performance am i gaining or loosing choosing either of these, main software i use is fcp, need to edit 4k iphone footages and occasional 10 bit footage from a camera but mostly 8 bit , m1 pros are beast i do agree, but in the second hand market i am getting these models in a similar price range,i do own a 13 inch macbook pro 2012 i edit my small instagram reel in 4k without any issue, but i would like more screen if possible but i how much am i loosing in this.
last year a friend had one, turn it on next day... DEAD....ssd´s are having issues.
I just picked up basically a brand new mbair with 0 battery cycles for $530
Would it be good for liking programming? Using Unity? Playing games?
mac is not gaming tool. if you need a game, buy window laptop or ps5
I heard that the macbook m1 air has problems with wifi connection and speed. Have these problems been resolved so far?
I never experienced any issues with internet speed or stability when making this video. Everything was always nice and quick, and my connection didn’t drop once.
No isu about wifi for my MBA M1
I just bought this MacBook on July 15, 2023 and I had no issues with my wifi connection. I have a very fast internet connection and haven't noticed any speed issues. Both laptops have no issues with speed whatsoever.
how can i get after effects in mac m1 ?
Less is More!
Fanless M1 MBA still have many Fans, Notch less too!🥰
I am a student (pursuing computer science)...I don't play any pc games or other stuff...just some web dev skills and other coding stuff, web browsing, xcel, word, ppt related stuffs
...just want to know is it good to buy MBA m1 8gb 255gb version...I am from India...and here with back to school offer I am getting at around 950 usd......Or I will go witha other windows laptop....Please tell.
Get 8gb 256gb and it will work just fine, 16gb 256gb is more future proof
is macbook air m1 good for video editing?
great video
all you talk is true, I can handle 4K in premier pro.
Out of curiosity, you said that you have this M1 Air and a 16-inch Pro. What do you do on your Pro that you wouldn’t want to do on this Air?
Complicated motion graphics or effects compositing in After Effects can definitely be challenging on the MacBook Air. The same goes for complex timelines in Premiere that involve a lot of demanding footage and or effects.
agree, really hard not to recommend this beast. I've been using this for 3 years, waiting for the battery to drop to 80% to get free battery replacement, but it keeps standing at 84%. LOL
Count of cycles?
What can you say about its color accuracy?
Is what you’re saying is that M1 MacBook Air gets great performance and excellent display, battery life and other features and optimization?
Yep! Almost everything on this laptop is really solid!
Which software should I use for this
is that macbook 8gb ram version?
Yes
If it had HDMI and two or three USB 2.0/3.0 along with the two USB C; this would've been an 11/10. For now your typical storage-enjoying editor is going to find themselves weighed down by the dongle mess that comes with this model.
Base model M1 is actually quicker than base model M2!!!
Bought M1 👌
Would you recommend base model for game editing ?
No
Still a good buy in 2023?
Yes absolutely, this thing will be running smooth for several years. V
Great video! Thanks for making it so thorough and helpful
how many GPU cores does the model you tested have, 7 or 8?
Does that number even matter in actual performance?
Also is this the 7 or 8 core version ?
The 7 core variant.
What app do u use to edit?
Adobe Premiere Pro
Equipping my entire staff with this in September 2024. Only Mailspring, LibreOffice and admin work. 256GB and 8GB still is overkill in a working environment. Life isn't a game. Lack of ports? Use a USB-C hub.
Dope Video
Not the best at anything, but great at everything. Seems a good deal.
Thank you for this review. However I've also got the same base model M1 Macbook Air. But each time I try to use after effects I always get this warning "Low memory warning, RAM has been extended for preview. Adjust RAM settings in preference". I don't what the problem is. I've even configured more RAM for aftereffects and I'm still getting the same warning. Please help.
Oh nice you use a Lumix
Bro I full on game on the m1 MBA
Is this now better than macbook pro early 2015 i7 16gb ram ?
I have the MacBook Air M1 with 512g and I use DiResolve. it works pretty well. I recommend the M1 over the M2 but get the 512g M1
8 GB enough for diresolve for normal editing works ?
Does it render smoothly in your experience???
