Put a deposit on my Trailhunter yesterday and CAN'T wait. I've told my wife that when I pick it up I'm driving to the dealership with all my gear, loading it up and driving straight to the mountains with it!
What is the current lead-time? Did you have to pay a markup?
@@hoch_und_runter The lead time is whatever Toyota and the Gods deem it to be! LOL... they can't even really tell me. My dealer said it's currently in an inspection hold at port; so at least I know it made it across the ocean without falling off a container ship to the bottom of the sea. Rumor has it the inspection hold is so they can replace seals on the snorkels that weren't properly seated at the factory; but I haven't had anyone else confirm that. I've heard of a few starting to be released from the hold, so I'm hoping by the middle of September I'll have mine...

That deflator is cool. I bet you could use a 4-tire inflator like a morrflate and it would air them all down at the same time. It might need an adaptor.

As you break things in and the computer learns, it will be interesting to see where your MPG's end up. My last trip to Colorado from Kansas I got 17mpg on the computer going up and 19 coming back with my 20 year old WJ! The computer isn't compensating for the larger than stock tire diameter either so it was even better. I never did manually calculate it, although I should have!

I appreciate the fact that you are running it stock to measure its capabilities. I was surprised how capable my FJ was stock. I found it's issues with no upgrades, and that set my upgrade priorities. For the trails I was doing, I found that I needed sliders to protect the rockers. Then after a good rain I found that I needed better tires, and so on. I know a lot of people think upgrades right away, but these vehicles are pretty capable in their stock configuration.
I agree, it’s part of the reason I wanted the Trailhunter. There aren’t as many after market options out for these trucks yet, so I wanted a turn key setup.
I did order some Rago shock skids. I’ll do a video on that later, but the truck has some pretty exposed components that could use beefed up a bit.
Nice to see that someone will use this as intended. Nice video. Personally, I will wait about 5 years, and let them perfect the truck.

Do you know if it’s possible for the single piston compressor to have a quad hose setup to air up and down 4 at a time? I run the dual ARB compressor on my jeep and this is super convenient.
Has anyone yet seen real-world feedback as to if any issues with water crossings, in standing water for any period of time and the hybrid batteries/system? I would imagine zero issues especially given Toyota's long history with hybrid however the trail can be a wonderfully brutal place to learn! Nice overview and thanks...looking forward to more of your build and outdoor adventures.
That is still up in the air unfortunately. I’m gonna wait and see what Expedition Overland does with it, as far as deep crossings. Toyota will never admit to the public that you could submerge it for X amount of time, but behind closed doors I know those guys have to be having conversations about things like that. Toyota doesn’t want a huge channel focused on Toyotas failing in the middle of a trip. So time will tell, but until then I feel okay with going to 30 inches deep or so.
The batteries are in the cab, unless you sink your Taco, shouldn't even factor
Ouch on the wheel rash. Definitely sticks out. I get some wheel rash with each offroad trip. Keep touching it up with some Rustoleum Satin Black paint in a pint can, covers it up okay. Aluminum gouges pretty easily on rocks.
Great video and narrating!.. But why pay a premium for this Trail Hunter edition if you plan on changing most of the accessories it comes with?
Seems like a TRD Offroad with the same engine would be the way to go if you're going to customize with aftermarket accessories. Just my opinion.

Me too! I did find a way to turn a lot of it off.
Nice truck! I’m going to stick with my 2024 Bronco Raptor at 1,300 miles. Have my Trailrax roof rack to install and my rear seat delete with storage drawer and ICECO APL55. Then add a couple of A-pillar lights and two front bumper lights. Will spend summer deciding what to do for a winch.
I think you have to stick with 18 inch wheels because the front brake calipers are larger on the hybrids.
You must be happy that it’s a four-cylinder and not the V6 that is having all the issues from Toyota.
I’d rather a manual transmission any day but then I’m old school and used to driving hundreds of thousands of miles (kilometres in my case) all over the world.
One thing I’ve noticed in this video is that the FJ stands up so much better in the off-road scenes, are you thinking of wrapping it in a brighter colour?
The new model land cruiser 70 series is going to be available with a manual transmission with a 2.8 diesel in the coming months down under.
I’ll stick with my V8 diesel though, despite all the electronics .

It will be interesting to see what you come up with... And fully agree on the front bumper. They aren't just for winches.... Hahaha, and the power tailgate! Ya Krystal made fun of them the first time she saw one "sissy!" Hee hee It would be cool to leave it for a while, see how it performs right out of the box. Ya, the camping stuff and a good set of tires and that's it ... Then just go. Though you might have to, till the aftermarket catches up.
Yes, people complain about the big screen but using it with maps makes it worth it. It's breeze using it in the city.

Yeah, it’s gonna be a real expensive build. Luckily the channel funds the hobby, and my day job pays for everything else.

People whined about the V6 powertrain not having enough juice with the 5 spd and now they want to sing sounds about reliability. The 2.4 hybrid is great, test drove a Land Cruiser and I was literally surprised on its power delivery.

But would you say the trailhunter is worth the $62,000+ price tag? I honestly don't think it is.. and i even question if the i-force max off-road Tacoma is worth the 42k they want for it... especially with what Toyota financial is offering for a financed option of 8%?? its over $1000/month... ridiculous for a mid- sized truck.. I'm thinking I'll stick with my 2016 TRD OR... at least for a bit... I was tempted.. but that price tag.. and the rates they are offering is ridiculous... I mean I get that its kind of on par with the loaded gladiator rubicon as far as price... but a rubicon is far more capable out of the box... and this is an unproven platform... I dunno.. waiting for some longer "realistic use" cases...

I’m curious why you went with the Trailhunter over the TRD Pro? Not saying one is better than the other, just curious what your thought process was.
Great videos. You mentioned bigger tires on smaller wheels (I'm not sure it was this video). What size wheels will you go to and how small CAN you go without hitting the discs? Thanks.
Method has 17s on a Land Cruiser which has the same brake setup, so it will fit them. But that’s as small as you can go.
Love seeing the Trailhunter on the channel! Excited to see more videos with it where I'll wonder whether I made the right choice going with the 3rd gen haha. One question (maybe I missed it in the video) ... will the bed outlet charge a power station at a reasonable rate? That was one of the biggest questions I had when I was planning on a TH and never could find a good answer.

I do have one question.
You stated that the Toyota engineers said that if you were to add a front locker. That you would need to add an additional compressor on top of the one that you already have with your Toyota. Then you stated that the Toyota compressor, according to the engineers, was about the same as the dual ARB compressor. That one is actually rated to run both front and rear lockers. My understanding without any reservoir tank. Would you have any idea why that there would be a difference? I would be willing to guess that the Toyota compressor may be able to hold up with front and rear lockers.
Maybe before you add another one, if you are considering putting a front locker on. Try using the factory compressor to run both.
The compressor could do it, but you would have to do some wiring for it. If memory serves form my Fj locker install, ARB has harnesses with their compressors specifically for lockers. And the little reservoir on the ARB compressor has threaded fittings where the solenoid plugs in as well. Not sure that the Toyota compressor has anything like that pre drilled. For me personally, its already got a rear electronic locker so I will just do an electronic front locker on it at some point in the future.

Looking good! Just added the Trailhunter front skid plate to our Off-Road. I like the balance of protection and weight there. I was really upset when Toyota marketing got it wrong and stated that the compressor came with the OR premium package at launch and then didn't, but I have really come to love the Thor's Lightning compressor and 4 tire kit I picked up from them. What size fuse is in that area with the hybrid, mine is a 7.5A and I have blown it once already with the USB/CD plugs. Great job on the content as usual!
Beautiful truck I want the 6 foot bed but they’re hard to come by and everybody wants your first born plus MSRP. So airing up & down multiple tires at a time is out I take it.
Yeah the 6 foot is a LONG wheelbase. I wanted one, but the 4th Gen is too much longer of a WB than the 3rd Gen.
Airing up multiple tires will just require a different hose kit. I have a Morrflate for mine already to do just that!

What does the door sticker say the payload is?
1215. That’s with steel skids, rock rails, bumper, racks. So a better payload than the 3rd Gen with steel already on it.
@@IndependenceOverland I’m a bit confused with your answer. During the announcement they said the payload was approx 1700 pounds on the Trailhunter. But if all of your skids are standard to the Trailhunter and 1215 is on your sticker, I don’t understand how they could say the payload is 1700. Is there an aspect to all of this that I’m missing or something that I’m just not understanding? Thank you for any clarification you can provide.
@@Corsair8X Yeah typical cooperate sales stuff. Like Gladiator has a "maximum payload of 1700 pounds" but really that is only a manual transmission, very basic trim of the Gladiator. So in this instance, they were talking generally about the I-Force Max equipped truck. So the very most basic form of the truck can have a 1715 pound payload. So yes, its still a bit of a let down but still much better than the 3rd gen.
I should also note that the rear bed bar probably weighs 60 pounds. So as soon as you remove that you get some more payload back!

I guess my problem with Toyota was they were specific in their announcement that Trailhunter would also have 1700 which I thought was incredible but appears to be a miscommunication on their part during the actual announcement. I am looking at getting a Trailhunter in the future and I also want to go with larger tires. I like that Toyota is putting 33's on this truck out of the factory, but I'm curious what you want to change to? You mentioned going with a smaller wheel and larger tire...so what is your plan? Thanks
The most important feature that I'm curious about is how long does it take for the seat belt beeper to go away? My 2nd Gen is about a mile.
I don’t think it does at all. You have to modify it with a Carista device, and then it goes away entirely. I checked and this does not work on the older trucks though.

Did toyota do anything about the taco curse of feeling like your sitting on the floor? Every taco I drive at work feels super uncomfortable like im sitting at the kids table
Yes they absolutely did. I never owned a 3rd gen so I don’t feel I am one to comment on that, but pretty much any Tacoma channel or auto journalists (TFL) have mentioned that it finally feels like sitting in a truck. It was one of Toyotas top complaints about the Tacoma.
Use cruise control to speed it up? When using crawl control.

Yes it does. My v6 in the Fj sounds cool but the snorkel too, but it’s not as intense.

Even if the suspensions were the same stiffness the Trailhunter will ride smoother because of the longer wheelbase
Not all Trailhunters are 6ft beds.

@Independence Overland Has your Trailhunter's engine gotten louder? I have about 500 miles on mine and the engine has gotten incredibly clacky and loud compared to how it was in the first 150 miles. Taking it in thursday morning. That and there's a leaking strut and the tailgate latch broke after going over some mild washboard roads. 😂💀
haha no, I have had nothing like that yet. Though hearing about it scares me....

Hard no once you said hybrid they are too heavy and just cause more expensive problems if anything goes wrong on trail.
Single piston air compressor is mediocre at best. A dual piston compressor can air up much quicker and less down time.
Did you already rash up your front end on that passenger side plastic?!
I think the reason the battery doesn’t add much other than acceleration it’s so tiny, 1.9 kw from what I see published. Given that, not much more it could do with
It’s definitely small, but it seems like I can drive 10 blocks through town without the engine kicking on. I would think that in demanding situations, such as going up a hill on a highway, that it would do more at least in eco mode. But it does absolutely nothing if you don’t lay into it.

Did your trim come with the 2000 watt inverter in the truck bed? And is it a pure sine wave inverter?
What size of wheel do you think you'll be able to go to with the brake rotors being bigger compared to the non-hybrid? How about tire size?

The 1GRFE is tried and true, but this 2.4 has exceptional power.

No shit Sherlock, I even mentioned that in the video 🤦🏼♂️. And people want the alarm off because doing trails and having to get out constantly, you don’t want a seat belt on. I love when people who don’t off road come to off road videos.
@@IndependenceOverland i've done Kebler pass in said Equinox. I drive probably 100 miles a day on what you would call "off road" trails 300 plus days a yr. But yes getting out of your overland vehicle every 10 miles to grab your go pro must suck. because of that seat belt chime.

What coil springs did you add? nice video....
I haven’t added anything yet, it’s stock. On my Fj I added some heavier duty Dobinson springs.
Why did you get a Trailhunter and not an Off-road?
I thought that ppl who like to build their trucks would go for the OR instead.
On 3rd gen’s that made a little more sense than it does now. I did a video on that previously, but I am working on another one currently that will cover more of that decision.
Cool truck but way too expensive for what you get
MPG will get better after first oil change.
I haven’t been driving it much since changing the oil, but hopefully I will be soon!

No, with the new MASSIVE wheelbase of the long bed, I couldn’t do it. If the wheelbase stayed the same as the 3rd gen I would have. Trail capability is too important to me so I made the sacrifice.

Seat belt alarms are extremely annoying. Best thing to do is to buckle the seat belt, then get in.

I explained that in eco mode it doesn’t do anything. In other modes it gives more power. But it rarely seems to come on, so I would think eco mode could capitalize on the stored energy more. But it doesn’t. Hopefully seeing it in writing helped you understand my perspective.

If inflation keeps at the rate it’s at, it’s likley. It’s like when you go to Vietnam and you pay like 500,000D for a meal. Money over time becomes less valuable.

Really, a 2.4 L 4 cylinder engine, not buying one. Put in a V6 or V8.
Yea put the V6 form the Gen 3 with less power and less torque that needs 5.29 gears just to install 35’s. No one needs a V8 in a Tacoma. You guys need to understand that with time comes innovation. If you don’t like it just buy an older Tacoma. Period.

V6 turbo /super charger and this thing would sell like hotcakes. Hybrid is garbage and the 4cyl is rated for 100k miles only . So good luck . Clock is ticking .
