    I did the white rim on a mountain bike. It was the hardest and most incredible thing I’ve done in my life. Hard to convey the beauty, the vastness and grandeur of the landscape you experience on that trail. Camping 50 miles in was so peaceful and grounding. You realize that what you see around you took 200 million years to create and our time in this planet is just a micro second in the grand scheme of things. That is humbling in and of itself. We should appreciate what has been provided for us on our short journey in this world and protect it.

    Part two looks fun. I got stuck in quicksand at Great Dunes once - looks like you get to have a similar 'adventure' digging someone out ;) Although from experience I think the suction on mud is a bit less than quicksand, so maybe it will not be as bad as it looks from the teaser at the end... ;) Took a winch + a full (F150 raptor) and a midsize truck to drag my Ranger out of quicksand. No bueno.

    • @IndependenceOverland
      @IndependenceOverland  3 місяці тому +1

      @@Jareddonvito So its on all the time now I believe. You now have a button you can turn it off, its the little icon with the curvy lines behind it. The MTS modes are pretty much a fancier version of ATRAC.

    • @Jareddonvito
      @Jareddonvito 3 місяці тому

      @IndependenceOverland I think the button you mentioned may be traction control, if it's the button on the left side of the steering wheel, on that panel. I noticed that symbol was flashing on the dash when I lost traction in loose dirt. When I clicked it to turn it off, traction control wouldn't kick on and it would just spend the tires. I think you may be right about it being on all the time (when in 4 lo).

    It is possible to get a day pass for the White Rim Trail for the day or a day or two ahead of time. Just get to the visitor center early. Also, the camping permits are taken 6 months ahead of time, but you can check for cancellations. I was there with a friend in September, good timing, we were able to get either. We were heading to the San Rafael Swell afterwards, so we just opted for the day pass. As for Lathrop Canyon trail, I'm not sure why On X gave it a green rating. It was the most difficult part of the White Rim that we travelled, although we didn't go all the way out to the Green River. Thanks for the video! It brought back good memories.

      I have looked into various flatbed setups, but the main thing is I want a little camper on the back. The Australian style ute setups dont allow for that. Theres one company out of Germany that does it, but its like 60k for just the flatbed and canopy 😬. I have the bed rack and tent on just so I could get out and use the truck for the season, but by Spring it will be fully sealed off and dust proof. I have something cool in the works!

I will say, you did miss the best view, White Crack campsite has an incredible overlook of the confluence of the Green and Colorado, you see so much, feel so small, and the quiet you experience is incredible and the sunset there is impeccable. I've got to ask though, where did you camp the night before? That seemed like a really sweet spot outside Island in the Sky.

      This one was about 350gb of footage total. I don’t waste much space because I know what I use and won’t use so I’m efficient to some extent.my clips are rarely longer than a minute each, and I get 300-400 clips typically. This was probably 4 hours of total footage, and I’ll get 45-55 minutes of total watch time out of it.
      On a week or 2 week trip I get into the terabyte range. 😁

    Just did this late October.. I can assure Lathrop is not a 'green' trail. Maybe at one time it was, but not late October of 2024. This was after pretty good rain events, so maybe I was in the aftermath of that. To compare, there were sections of Lathrop right out of the gate that were quite a bit more sketchy than Hardscrabble Hill, and Hardscrabble is puckery.

    • @IndependenceOverland
      @IndependenceOverland  Місяць тому +1

      Yes sir, his is a naturally aspirated 4 cylinder. It doesn’t go fast up hills on the highway, but it sure does good off road and he gets surprisingly good fuel economy. Jesse has owned that truck for over 10 years now and he beats the tar out of it. Yes he’s regeared, on 35s, and I’ve even seen that engine sucking in a whole lot of dirt and it just keeps on ticking.
      Regear your truck, have a tune done, and it will do fine. My Fj is at 245,000 miles now and it did this kind of stuff most of the 15 years I’ve had it.

    It’s a great trail. I’ve been to Canyonlands 5 times. Of the 63 Nationalparks, I’ve been to 53. Canyonlands is my favourite.
    Unless it’s changed in the last 2 years, I think you got your permit info wrong. You need a permit to camp along the trail, and that’s difficult to get. You can do the trail in one day without camping with no permit. All you need is to chat with a ranger and have a “don’t be a dumbass” and a vehicle check conversation.

    • @andyorr1597
      @andyorr1597 2 місяці тому

      No - 17x veteran of the WRR here. I’ve done it on bikes unsupported and over a dozen times with sag wagons. You definitely need a Backcountry Day Permit to do a day trip. The NPS maintains strict control on the number of people / vehicles in the back country. There is a sign at the Potash Rd junction, “Permits Only Beyond This Point”. Be warned, if you drive it in a day, it’s usually 8-11 hours of drive time under good conditions. If the Ranger allowed you to go without a formal permit, I’m certain they probably did the paperwork for you.

    Contextually, its neither 70 nor 100 miles long. Reason being is that entire loop (and this is a loop) is much longer. Mileage from 191 to Shaefer trail. Then Shaefer then white rim then up the mineral creek and then via gravel road back to park roads then to 191. If one was to do all that... it is well in excess of 200 miles. Alternatively, people come up potash road or exit out via potash road. Either way there are absolutely no gas stations anywhere in well let's be honest... middle of nowhere so those of you thinking about adventure like this should ABSOLUTELY have fuel with you. Prepare for 7-11mpg fuel economy. Closest gas station is either in moab itself or at corner of dinosaur museum (right off 191).
    FYI lathrop canyon is a VERY spicy trail going down into the canyon and coming back up. Rest is a sand drive to river. It has like 30 degree climb with switchbacks coming out or going down into it and its covered in loose gravel.

      17s bolt right up! Go for it man! The TH wheels will hit rocks, the spoke design protrudes and invites rock. If you dont bash your OEM wheels like I did, you can sell for them a pretty penny to go toward the Methods as well. I already scratched my Methods as well, but not nearly as bad and I was doing actual off roading when it happened. I vot for after market wheels. +35mm off set will put them perfect inside the fender, +25 will poke them out just a little.

    How did you keep the bed scene lights from coming on when you opened the tailgate and back door?

      Just turn the bed light switch off that’s right under the aux switches near the steering wheel 👍

      Yeah, most of the national parks don't allow dogs in the back country. We had some really long days on this trip though, it would have been hard on her anyway.

    I’m confused how it took so long to get a permit? You can go on the website and generally get one one or two weeks in advance. Almost always.

    • @IndependenceOverland
      @IndependenceOverland  3 місяці тому

      For camping 2 weeks in advance? Not in our experience, it literally sells out for the season within like 30 minutes. Thats why we couldnt get a second group of trucks, it sold out as we were planning all of this, and we did it 3 months in advance.
      I haven't tried every year, I also wasn't staring at my computer for 10 years straight, there is more in the world than this trail so it was just when we tried, we couldn't seem to get a permit. The point is I really wanted to do this 10 years ago, and life happened and it took 10 years to finally do it.
