Me too! Hahaha. I am waiting for multiple mechanical and cosmetic components to break and fall off with this new Toyota Tacoma. Let them Rot on the Lot!
This may sound nit picky but I would not buy a vehicle that had a range that the Tacoma has, what you said 285 miles? That is crazy, my truck with a 36 gallon tank will go over 700 miles with regular driving, 800+ if I put an effort into it. Heck when my remaining range drops below 200 miles I typically fuel up, having put 500 miles on the tank already.
You could carry extra gas. Most serious off roaders/overlanders do but i do agree another 10 gallons added to the size would be nice. 300 miles of range is more than enough for most to do what they need to do before finding another gas station though
I love how you guys take these vehicles on real hard core off road trails to test them out. That’s why I always turn to TFL when shopping for vehicles or learning about vehicles just for fun. Thank you for all the real world information!
I just don't know how they put together a "trail hunter" rock crawler without a front diff lock, especially that all its midsize competition has them in the top spec offroad trims. Also I think the Toyota is overstyled. Way too many silly angles and shapes. The Raptor looks so much better.
Are you guys going to get that new Ford performance tune Ford released yesterday. It’s a Ford dealer installed performance tune that bumps the Ranger Raptor up 50Hp and 100 lbs of torque. Ranger Raptor: Torque jumps from 430 to 536 lb.-ft., while horsepower increases from 405 to 455. I think Ford is charging something like $800 for it. Would love to see a lot of the Ranger Raptor test or re-test with that performance tune. It’s already the power king in the class. This tune should really take it to yet another level.
Why a front locker isn't offered as a factory option for the Taco at this point is beyond me. Espeically in the TH model which is said to be showcasing Toyo's off-road capability. Both Ford and GMC/Chevy got it right there.
Raptor in a second. Costs less, front locker, fox shocks, 4 auto. Did all the Toyota did with ease, granted better tires but easily minus that advantage with damp/wet conditions for only the Ford. Bed side lights and power up tailgate is something I have NEVER needed or wished for on my truck.
Toyota built a cheaper truck and threw some bolt on parts and didn’t think we would notice all the epic failures they made with the New 2024 Toyota Tacoma. Screw you Toyota. Greedy bastards.
Both trucks being basically stock are impressive machines. We are going to get a 4Runner TrailHunter and it is cool to see essentially the same vehicle being used as a rock crawler. We will not be doing a lot of harder rocks, nice to know if we need the capability it is there. Our current 4Runner has a 3" lifted OME suspension and 33" Mickey Thompson Baja Boss A/T tires. Good to see real world driving and not just putting around in a parking lot.
100% Agree with your final assessment. The Raptor (minus the stupid camper and side steps)wins in my book. BTW, @22:00 minutes in, I was in a similar roll situation where I was so far over on the drivers side, I could literally and did, put my hand out the window and touch the ground.(1986.5 Nissan Hardbody SEV6 4x4) And that while fun, was very concerning. Unfortunately, that was back in the day when we did not have phone cameras and my back up rig was at the bottom of the V notch a good 4 hundred yards away. I don't know what kept it from rolling completely over, other than I had just the right amount of everything working in my favor. lol
I bought a Thor system after you advertised it. Best purchase ever! Only note, make sure the valve on the controller is open when in storage, otherwise the batteries will run down.
Normally I see a 20+ minutes video (let alone 36!) and pass… but Tommy and Case, you guys made one of the best TFL vids to date! Thoroughly enjoyed the whole thing! People keep talking about the price BUT Toyotas have always been high. All they did was give you the option to add everything you would do anyways. And it’s done from the factory so props to them for that.
Fantastic video guys. The TH trying to use CRAWL highlighted why it’s inferior to a locker. The torque sent to the front right when was minimal, and once you add some weight and larger tires it would be even less effective.
They aren't talking about the $10-15k Toyota Dealership markup on these Tacomas and the Trasmissions going bad already. I am a Tacoma Fan boy, but I have to say, for the money, with the Raptor HP/Torque factory tune, it has it beat.

TrailHunter...no front locker, has a 4 cylinder, comes with crappy tires and is almost $10k more than the Raptor. Who in the Hell would choose this junk over the Raptor? 🤣🤣🤣
I feel like a worthwhile comparison that is often missed is the equipped tire. Not even size, just talking make/ modle of tire. The wranglers Toyota puts on all their trucks is a glorified all season. The Ranger Raptor comes with KO3's. Massive plus for the Ford.
Thanks guys, this was an awesome video. You put those trucks through their paces, and that is what I was looking for - the defining factor that gives one an edge here or there. You guys did an amazing job of keeping those trucks looking nice through some rough terrain though. That has to be tough. If it's mine, I could live with a scrape here or there. But it's totally different when it's not yours LOL. My takeaway is this: Ranger Raptor. Two main factors. 1. Money. 2. While I like the look of the Trailhunter, I have sat in the new Tacoma. The combination of the super raked windshield combined with the super high dash plus overstyled interior makes for a very small cabin. The shame of it is, there's really no reason for it other than maybe a MPG bump for the angle of windshield.

I just put BFG KO3's on my 2018 Ford F150 (275x70r18) and am pretty happy with them so far.
The sway bar on the first obstacle didn’t disconnect. It doesn’t disconnect when you’re articulated.
Right? Its just the computer lying.
Of all the things Toyota gave the "Trail Hunter" they leave off a front locker...
New taco is a rippoff. Tis why I canceled my trd pro allocation and bought the raptor.
Smart man. Prices on the new Yotas are out of control!
@2011buddylee My RR is in the production line, so I hope to receive it very soon. I've never test drive zr2 or at4 and decided to go with RR. What made you to order RR instead of zr2 after test drive?
They act like it has a V6 with these prices
5:08 was waiting for that front diff to break! 😂
Me too! Hahaha. I am waiting for multiple mechanical and cosmetic components to break and fall off with this new Toyota Tacoma. Let them Rot on the Lot!
A $65k mid sized truck designed for rock crawling and it comes without a front locker standard? Damn.
Could he have said 250 miles? Even worse! Or perhaps I mis-heard.
Ranger raptor all the way.
the ranger also has a usable back seat
That back seat on the Tacoma is not usable and useless. Another epic fail by Toyota.
I just don't know how they put together a "trail hunter" rock crawler without a front diff lock, especially that all its midsize competition has them in the top spec offroad trims.
Also I think the Toyota is overstyled. Way too many silly angles and shapes. The Raptor looks so much better.
Personally I think the Raptor just looks like a plain old ford pickup. Not a bad thing, but not very distinctive.
Disagree hard, Toyota looks waaaayyy better than the raptor.
@@fritty9927Plain ages better I wish more companies made simpler designs. Now they just rip off looks from each other.

That’s a decent price for a warranty power bump
They've said in a new vid, they want to get the tune, then do before and after performance tests !!
Ford Raptor the between the two better package thanks Case and Tommy
Both truck are great! But in own class is Raptor and and everyone else.👍
Great video gents! I’m going with the Ranger as well.
Why a front locker isn't offered as a factory option for the Taco at this point is beyond me. Espeically in the TH model which is said to be showcasing Toyo's off-road capability. Both Ford and GMC/Chevy got it right there.
Ranger. No question.
Is Toyota serious with the price of this truck, over $60k??
You bet your ass their serious
More like $70k. Probably $75k out of the door.
Id rather buy gmc sierra with that price
Toyota built a cheaper truck and threw some bolt on parts and didn’t think we would notice all the epic failures they made with the New 2024 Toyota Tacoma. Screw you Toyota. Greedy bastards.
Another great video guys, very well done!
The articulation and locker test was impressive for a pair of showroom stock trucks.
Bro the toyota is not even near the raptor. The raptor is on another level lockers and more power and speed. Plus the raptor got a v6 😂
Yeah but it's a Ford V6. 😂
@@andyleo8418Good point
The off-road capability of the Ranger Raptor is understandable. The problem is that it has Ford QC. The industry leader in recalls 3 years in a row.
@@theaveragewoodsman6002 toyota should trounce that easily in the next qc. 110 engines and tacoma trannys failing like crazy.
Damn fords high speed Baja truck beat Toyotas “rock crawler” that’s saying something. Or at least it used to.
How did it beat it
@@flight2k5 did you not watch
@@paulwatson4189 yea the Tacoma went everywhere the raptor did 😂🤣
@@flight2k5 that’s what they said. But it beats it in price and powertrain 4Auto stuff like that

Very thorough and interesting review of both trucks! Tommy and Kase (And Alex) are definitely the future of TFL! Keep up the great work guys!
Never thought I'd say this about an Ecoboost engine but that Ranger sounds worlds better than the Taco.
The colorado I4 Turbo also sounds like a pile of crap. I test drove one and was actually semi concerned. It was very clattery, kinda like a diesel.
@@Jay-me7gwmight be the direct injection. I had a mazdaspeed 3 that clattery too but had no problems putting down 400whp for over 100k miles.
@@Ww8.3 I drove my direct injected 3.5L Ecoboost to the dealer for the test drive. DI def makes a ticking, but It wasn’t just that.
Glad to see some real wheeling these days on the channel!
So glad you did this comparo! Now i just need to convince the wife she needs a ranger raptor 😉
Toyota has no bump stops! They are blowing out the upper shock towers
I don't know what kept it from rolling completely over, other than I had just the right amount of everything working in my favor. lol
But did the front differential blow up on the Tacoma again?
It will and so with the Transfer Case, and transmission, and then the 4 cylinder turbo engine. What an absolute garbage cheap and overpriced truck.
I bought a Thor system after you advertised it. Best purchase ever! Only note, make sure the valve on the controller is open when in storage, otherwise the batteries will run down.
And you put the Ford at a disadvantage with the camper on it.
😂how
@@flight2k5 So much weight on the back axle lowers the rear breakover, and center breakover.
@@reaperofchaos87 🤣😂 ok. It o my weight 275 pounds
Another ford meathead.
I doubt anyone would be putting these trucks through anything close to what they did here so either one is fine.. lol
Normally I see a 20+ minutes video (let alone 36!) and pass… but Tommy and Case, you guys made one of the best TFL vids to date! Thoroughly enjoyed the whole thing!
For a future video idea it might be fun to have a “normal” truck along. This was like watching two olympians do battle, be interesting to see how a normal vehicle would compare.
People keep talking about the price BUT Toyotas have always been high. All they did was give you the option to add everything you would do anyways. And it’s done from the factory so props to them for that.
Nice job guys. It's always fun watching what these trucks can do. I would only do this in a new truck if it was a rental.
Raptor beats any TRD/Special Edition Taco on price and performance.
True. Here in Philippines no V6 only 2.0 Biturbo Diesel
Fantastic video guys. The TH trying to use CRAWL highlighted why it’s inferior to a locker. The torque sent to the front right when was minimal, and once you add some weight and larger tires it would be even less effective.
The Ford looks tough. But the plastic oil pan ruins the entire package!
They aren't talking about the $10-15k Toyota Dealership markup on these Tacomas and the Trasmissions going bad already. I am a Tacoma Fan boy, but I have to say, for the money, with the Raptor HP/Torque factory tune, it has it beat.
Very impressed by those BFGs. I think that was the big difference
I'm still in the middle on the k03s. I know they are better in the rain but I'm worried about offroad use.
@@adamsmiths3016 if I would be doing more mud, than I wouldn't use the all terrain. For general use, and crawling, I think its the right choice
@@adamsmiths3016 I have them on my 4th gen Taco and have done a few off road trips on them. I have absolutely zero issues with them.
@@n118nw not trying to discredit you but just trying to pick your brain. Have you used the k02s before you tried the k03s if so did you notice a big difference? I'm curious because my k02s are at the end of their life and I'm going to pick up the HD terrains or the k03s next.
@@adamsmiths3016 No OEM were BFG Trailterrains. Previous truck had Continental Terrain Contacts. This is the first time I've ever had BFG AT's
That Tocoma looks awesome
The Ford looks much better glad to hear it performs as well as it looks.
It’s nice to see you guys doing some harder trails and obstacles.
I am a toyota fan (97 4runner, 08 Tacoma, now 17 Tacoma) but I think I would choose the Ford. I like the styling of the ford better and twin turbo v6 (not fan of hybrids for potential failure point) Ford also has a better following for tuning and modification if you choose. 95% of my wheeling would probably not need a front locker but is nice to have. I am impressed toyota actually added a True frame slider plus for the compressor too. Good video thanks guys!
Im a Tacoma owner and driver, that Ford Ranger Raptor looks alright for sure. But we'll wait for the long term quality report on this truck a year or two from now.
Game Over … The Ranger Raptor absolutely destroys the Tacoma. Even the Chevy ZR2/GMC AT4X outperforms the Toyota.
🇺🇸👍🏻
Keep hating broke down on the side of the road.
Nice job on this video especially when you put them up to show the underbody Nick's and dings
Is the ford ranger the new mid size king ? It seems that of the off road version of the mid size trucks now the ford ranger raptor the best truck for the money and the most all around capable mid size truck .
No. The tacoma outsells the ranger 4 to 1
@@Enchanted3DPrints The new tacoma is not selling good at all
Nice video guys. I will say you took the Ranger in literally sandbagged. Then it walked through everything as good or better than a more expensive truck. Also all those branded accessories, are usually slightly less quality than the makers sell themselves.
When you disconnected the swaybar in the Tacoma, I couldn’t detect the slightest bit difference in the video. Are you sure it disconnected?
Another viewer commented that it won't disconnect when it is already articulated.
Tommy I'll 100% take my f150 down that trail. Watch me. Next time I'm in Colorado!
Now this is what we call offroading. Well done y'all 👏. Great trucks, great trails and awesome video. I'm a Tacoma guy but I do like both trucks. Again very well done. More videos like this please 🙏 😊
TrailHunter...no front locker, has a 4 cylinder, comes with crappy tires and is almost $10k more than the Raptor. Who in the Hell would choose this junk over the Raptor? 🤣🤣🤣
😂😂😂 So many Toyota Boot lickers will buy this overpriced and cheaply built Toyota Tacoma. Toyota fanboys are not the sharpest toolbags….LOL
Out standing! Top tier rd review Thank you Tommy and Kace you guys rock!! 👌👍🔥🔥🔥🔥
I feel like a worthwhile comparison that is often missed is the equipped tire. Not even size, just talking make/ modle of tire. The wranglers Toyota puts on all their trucks is a glorified all season. The Ranger Raptor comes with KO3's. Massive plus for the Ford.
Canyon AT4X ate up those razor rocks. One go, no slip and a crazy angle
When have we gotten so lazy we can not lift a tailgate 🤷♂️😂
Great Review Tommy & Kase! Goes to Show, no matter the price, Front Lockers are Key to Proper Offroading! The Toyota was making my heart sink. Why did they choose not to give it a front locker? Due to Cost saving. Toyota Cost Cuts whenever they can. I know I've owned several.
Ranger every day!!
