Low screams and growls use more air and mastering good technique presents unique challenges and risk of injury.
Further, you've got to do some experimenting that really makes you feel and look ridiculous... YES... Even more so than you've experienced before while following my channel.
Let me walk you through three key exercises to help you develop the right and safe way to growl and access powerful low, brutal screams.
If you follow these easy, low impact exercises and do them mindfully, there's no reason you will not be able to inject these wonderful sounds into your voice!

Right... in like 3 or 4 days I've Def gotten more here than everywhere else combined. In the industry you get a budgeted arrangement agreed by how much faith is in your music as a buisness... you automatically assume most of this to no longer be your priority or is someone else's tasks... the reality is most those guys have little to no regards for your ass... it's just about the money.. kinda like lawyers.. you get what was payed for.. but to get so much logic and basic sense to just navigate your own choices is priceless vs just accepting what's handed back to you because you assumed it not to be your job or whatever . If that makes sense.. your better off staying out of the industry and in your garage by like 76 football fields... that's honest... I guess it's prob about your personal goals but.. they can have that bullshit in my opinion and I'm good d.i.y. maybe it's been there done that or age but I'd rather have junk shit equipment doing my thing my way than pekerheds with top shelf shit that totally scubs off all authentic soundscapes.

When I scream or sing now my voice just feels like one big mix. Your goal should always be to make everything your voice can do as natural and easy as possible!

Legit question: how long it took for you to enjoy your own screams? Cuz i'm trying to do this shit for near 3 years now and i'm still hate it, feels like a person who doesnt has any idea of what is doing when i hear it back🤣🤣🤣 i keep waiting for this "oh shit, i got it!" momment , for that sudden *click* in my head but till now... not even close

    • @Reds_not_dead
      @Reds_not_dead 7 місяців тому

@@hanzelvasconcelos7903well if you’re doing it right then straight up, you’re probably not gonna enjoy your own voice for a good while. More than likely you’re comparing yourself to other professional vocalists on professional tracks that have taken the best takes over multiple recordings. I struggle with this too, I always feel my screams are too low or too high pitched. The best piece of advice I can give is to try and stop comparing yourself to other vocals and experiment a lot with your voice by itself and find what sounds cool to you and what works well. You’re more than likely not gonna sound like vocalist xyz which is okay! It’s very important to just be you when you’re doing vocals

Thank you so much for speaking to how things are supposed to feel - that is so much easier to relate to when you’re just working on this stuff alone in your home office and don’t have all the technical knowledge. I have a fair amount of experience with my own voice and knowing where my limits are, but pushing those safely has been a trepidation for me until now. It’s so easy to fall into a physical workout mindset of working the muscles until they’re sore being a good thing and building up, when that is very much not the case for your vocal tools (except maybe your diaphragm…). Again, thank you for making all of this so accessible.

Great introduction to the low growl, I can tell you know precisely what you are doing. I did this work with a few tips on my own many years ago, now. It is just amazing the kind of sounds I can make. And when you are diligent about practicing, you can just slip in and out of the growl to clean, from chest to head voice, or vice versa, or anyway you want. 😊

Another great video. I've been a vocalist in bands for 20 years now, and while most people I know would say I have a great voice, it wasn't very consistent. Then, a few years ago I started watching your content and really started to understand why certain things I was doing worked, and what I was doing wrong. I became far more intentioned with my vocals, and just the last year or 2 I've done things with my voice I've never been able to achieve. And I'm 37! Chris, I just have to say: the way you describe what you want to feel when performing certain sounds, and how you display the process of learning ( no matter how goofy ) is truly inspiring.

I think it would be neat to see you do a vocal analysis of Randy Blythe from Lamb of God, his technique seems to have changed over the years but it usually sounds like that he’s doing the “compression fry” in a mid/lower register to the point where that distortion is able to completely mask out his actual voice, instead of using more airflow like what’s required typical low growls. It’s hard to do but sounds so metal.

Chris, thank you for this! I have been in a metal cover band “Metal cultures of various kinds”as the vocalist for close to 2 years. I tend to wear my voice out on my songs such as Bodies by drowning pool, Rob Zombie’s Superbeast, walk by Pantera among others. I realize from your video the reasoning is I’m using too much throat and too much diaphragm when these shown techniques not only protect that head voice and throat but even sound so much better once you tap into the combined tricks. Excellent job once again on explaining this!

I can already do growls just fine but you did it Chris, I am excited to say I just bought your course. This video reminded me of how much fun I had doing those stupid noises. I remember sqealling like a pig or barking as a dog as well and then somehow turning it into growl, haha.
A week ago I've been aggressively singing for 3 hours a day and on top of that I've worked quite a lot, which means I've been talking whole day. Turns out the next day I could still speak but my voice sounded trashed, I couldn't really sing high cleanly. I might have done a bit of damage and it scared me, now I feel like I am back in full force but it made me to reconsider my approach.
I was approaching my screams from a growl standpoint and maybe just pushing it higher wasn't the best idea as I found the transition from clean to scream impossible this way. I don't know why, it didn't really feel right but I kept doing it. On top of that I was trying to figure out more the scream singing which might have been more than my voice could handle at the same time. Weirdly enough, while my voice was trashed I could still sing in chest voice and growl fine, everything high was problematic.

Both of these songs I really feel show Kurt's vocal flip technique. Thank you for clarifying that the warmth is okay when practicing these things. I wasn't getting any tickling or pain but the warmth was worrying me a bit lol

Seen this thx to youtube algorithm. Used to front for a local band for 2 years. Couldn't do any distortions at the start, eventually got an _almost_ correct technique, but there was still just a little bit missing, I was eventually hitting that tickly state, although I think I never actually hurt my cords more than what could heal over a week or two. I'd say I hurt them way more by things not related to music at all. And while I've seen multiple good videos on how to scream, this one is probably the missing piece for me. The "bum-mo" combo is genius :D

I have been trying to engage my false chord, and tried with the "clear your throat" tip but I always ended up with the tickly sensation. This video might just be exactly the tip I was looking for! Thanks!

“bummm-oooh!” probably one of the first words made by early humans. Metal has been around far longer than its given credit 😎😂

Another great video, chris! I have already been playing around with the technique shown in the video for a long time, and managed to use it to place grit in lower notes (as opposed to the compression method shown in your other videos). Is there any way to bring this method up into higher register's, or is really limited to lower notes?
