honestly looking back all of the dragons attacks can be summed up as defensive maneuvers. the fire breath. sweeping the ground infront of stark. trying to swat stark away from making contact to only have his claw shattered. once stark gets on him the dragon flies up trying to fling stark off. the dragon wanted nothing to do with stark

@@saharudin3159 The problem is that it also doesn't want to give up it's nest/treasure, the dragon is smart enough to know not to mess with Stark, but it also instinctually can't just give away its stuff. Like imagine that Bruce Banner comes to your house and tells you to give up everything you own and leave, you're smart enough to know not to mess with the Hulk, but would you really want to at least not try to defend yourself when the person before is still just only Bruce Banner?

I love the way his introduction was presented. You first get introduced to Stark like he's some hero who fearlessly fought a dragon. Then it gets revealed that no he's a coward and a fraud, and THEN you get revealed HE is so strong even Eisen was fucking afraid of him, EISEN, the man who could jump 2000 feet off a mountain on a freefall, land on his head and be unscathed, is afraid of Stark. But the truth is he is STILL a coward, but he then eventually learned to overcome that cowardice nature and proved that his rumored unfathomable strength to be correct.
What a fucking rollarcoaster. And funny thing is the narrative never lied, only making vague enough statements to be bendable through context. Writing is superb. 🔥

I also like that every time warriors are involved, you hear that everyone of them was afraid at some point. this shows stark, that he doesn't need to be ashamed of his fear. realy a breath of fresh air from all those anime protagonists, who still visit school but have no trouble to face impossible odds all the time. usually the cowards in anime are here for comic relief or to show how amazing everyone else is compared to him. here we have someone, who is constantly afraid of his fights but by overcoming his fear, he is the most epic warrior ever

"A dragon is an intelligent creature, it won't pick a fight with a powerful opponent for no reason."
The thing Frieren says mirrors something that Stark said to her when she said why she wanted the grimoire.
"A Solar Dragon isn't something you pick a fight with 'for no particular reason!'"
Stark and the dragon are mirrors of each other. Two powerful beasts staring each-other down from their respective nests, each unwilling to engage in an unnecessary battle to the death.
    They're even both red.

It also shows that the dragon, a demon, values power and magic while humans value people, communities and life.
Despite the risk to it's life, it could not consider sacrificing it's nest ( a magical horde), just as straak chouldn't abandon the village. The dragon gained comfort and strength in it's treasures, just as our dear warrior did while living in the village.
Demons appear to be extremely individualistic, they'll work together but only in a magic, meritocracy forum that bars all none demons, like all the billionaires of our real world. While the humans are just us normal people, we excel through co-operation and are driven by forces beyond our own, personal, interests.
It's truly the difference between a sociopathic narcissists and an empathetic person

As someone pointed out in the comment section, Frieren told Stark to engage the dragon closely for 30 seconds to give her an opening. From the first time Stark makes contact with the dragon to the moment it is dead , only 30 seconds have passed in between. She gave him a time limit and he did the job within it . If not , Frieren or Fern would've certainly helped . I'm glad that Frieren usually doesn't just shove her students into the face of mortal danger to see their limit . She did the same thing with Fern and Qubal ; told Fern to give it her all to defend , it took a lot of effort but Frieren took down Qubal in a moment. Fern got a huge experience with being in mortal danger .

I adore the transition between the two songs here. We start with "Fear Brought me This Far", which is very much Stark's theme, a song about courage in the face of pissing-yourself fear, but the moment Stark starts *winning* , We switch to "Zoltraak", which is usually Frieren or Fern's theme for when they're kicking ass, but Stark gets to share it this time.
Both songs are absolutely incredible, but I love their use to change the emotion of the moment on a dime, from "This dragon is terrifying, but Stark is facing his fears anyway." to "Nah, ya boi's got this, he just doesn't know it yet."

When you watch other shonen anime like dragonball or one piece or maybe newer stuff like Demon Slayer, it always feels so hectic and fast, like you can't even follow what is happening, the exact opposite feeling I have with Frieren. @@hajkie I've read that. But there's a 2-3 year gap between first class mage exam and the present arc. He has faced foes like Revolte and Solitar since the exam arc. Stark might be able to do that in the present arc, but not at the time of First class mage exam.

It seems that while Eisen and Stark are both "warriors" Eisen is actually really very tank focused. He can just jump off cliffs no issue and was unharmed by a dragons tail. Stark on the other hand can't do those things but his axe swing is unimaginably strong. That's why Stark terrified Eisen: he realized his student is so strong that he could actually seriously damage even Eisen who's basically immortal and has directly faced unharmed basically every kind of monster. And we see that here with Stark just cutting down a literal dragon.
    (they're both really fast though)
