"This wire is among the strongest of demonkind's spells." The wooden boards on the ceiling of the prison cell: Look what they need to mimic a fraction of our power.
For what we see with other offensive spells such as "Zoltraak" and "Balterie" the minimal strength of the spell is completely set in stone but the maximum strength is dependant on the caster: if i remember correctly we can see 2 demons using Balterie and the one Fern killed showed just how powerful it could be; since it almost overwhelmed Fern the fastest magic caster in history, while the other was easily dispose off by Frieren before it could finish casting it. On the other hand, when Frieren freed Zoltraak we where able to see just how absolutely monstrous that simple spell could be; literally destroying mountains. So Draht saying that the wire spell is the strongest in demon history means that is has a high minimal damage, coupled with the fact that it is indestructible (confirmed by Frieren herself), so imagine just how devastating Draht could be, if used by a capable caster.
@@ardentpixel2361 The one in the flashback, the one that said "mama, it hurts" so the humans would take pity on him (her? It? Imma use it), we can see that it was casting Balterie before Himmel cuts it down and it tries to do so again before Frieren delivers the killing blow.
If you noticed, she could've decapitated him on the first strike, but she went and chopped off his arms, strangled him, and blew his neck off just because she felt like it lol
The thing that bogles my mind is the fact that Frieren apparently got the nickname "Frieren the Slayer" because she is the individual that has killed the most demons in HISTORY, and she did that during a 10 year period, seeing as Aura states demons have only really known of her existence for the last 80 years when she "appeared". Frieren should be seen as an outright fking calamity among demons. There shouldn't be a demon that doesn't know her face or at least her name, and the fact they don't because they perceive her as having "little" mana just shows how stupid and short sighted they are as a species
They know her name and her face but may be there are elfs similars to her appearances. Also demons just gauge the strength by mana level that mean even if she looks like the Frieren they just don't think she is the real one because of concealed mana.
Or maybe she killed so many that there's no-one left to know about her. Consider how the most lethal diseases aren't good at spreading, because they kill their hosts.
To be fair, the Japanese title (of the anime, and of Frieren the character) has a different, and double-entendre-d meaning.葬送のフリーレン (Sousou no Frieren) being her title: 葬送 is 'funeral', but it more literally a funeral/grievous send-off. The double entendre here (for us viewers) is that she lives long enough to send off everyone she loves, but also straight up buries her enemies.
Little detail at 2:06 , Frieren says "mazu ha ippiki", using the counting word "hiki" to refer to Draht. This is the counting word used typically for small animals, so she really didn't think much of him here lol.
Apparently in frieren's world humans elves dwarfs and if any other race that exist all are collectively called humanoids and humanity is a collective term for all of them like Eisen being called humanity's strongest warrior while he is a dwarf
Its not outside the realm of possibility that human magic is superior to anything prior to Flamme's time when most magic users were elves. Its been repeated multiple times how humans develop skills quickly. Plus we know that the once ultra-powerful spell zoltraak became just ordinary offensive magic within just 100 years of when it was created. Humans were able to study it so quickly that it just became a basic spell to them, despite how overwhelmingly powerful it was considered when Quaal developed it.
As a German, Frieren was interesting to watch, since the name of many things revealed what they will do. "I am Draht" (Draht = Wire) "They call me Stark" (Stark = Strong) "This is Eisen" (Eisen = Iron) "I leave this one to you Denken" (Denken = Thinking) "This is one of the peace envoys: Lügner" (Lügner = Liar) And there are so many more. Lawine (Avalance), Kanne (Watering Can), Übel (bad / evil), Laufen (Walking), Sense (Scythe), Genau (Precise), Lernen (Learning), Qual (Suffering), Heiter (Merry / Cheerful), Himmel (Heaven), Fern (Far away) and ofcourse: Frieren (being cold / shivering / freeze). Same with locations: Ende ( End ), Äußerst (Bordering), Bohne Village (Bean Village), Eisenberg (Iron Mountain), Hören (Hearing / Listening), Farbe (Colour), Aufgabe (Task), Wissen (Knowledge), Nachricht Region (Message Region), Sanft Forrest (Soft Forrest). Or Monsters: Stille (Sielence), Geisel (Hostage), Spiegel (Mirror), Einsam (Alone)
so the german experience would be like an english speaker watching a series where one guy suspected of a murder is called Innocent and the other suspect is named Guilty and watching everyone be shocked when Guilty is found guilty.
For a spell so simple, probably. I mean, it only took a month to analyze and learn the far more complex “gold transmutation” spell from Midas the gold demon.
Also, Demon magic/ curse is very difficult to decipher. Like flying for example, while human and elf can emulate it, they're not fully comprehend the principle, and can only emulate a portion of it
@@hafirenggayuda In terms of pure science, one demon spell is easily more advanced then anything humans/elves/any other species can learn, because they are so individual and carried on for centuries potentially. However, what they have in complexity typically lacks in simplicity, as Fern’s fight shows. Simple speed and force of attack was enough to overwhelm a fairly older demon.
I don't think she tried to analyze it at all, the conversation in this scene straight up told you she knows, and she said it (iirc) that the spell is exclusive to demon, she just prolong the killing out of spite is my guess, let him know how big of a mistake he did before he die
@@endyender1703Dude, she spent a century dispelling her arm which was goldified. A month analyzing Macht memory was to perfecting the dispelling. She won't stand a chance without prior encounter with Macht 6 centuries ago.
You do know the beg for his life was merely a ploy to lower Frieren's guard right? He would try and kill her immediately afterwards. It wasn't him trying to save his skin, it was just another tactic as a "good/kind" person would have spared him to turn him over to the authorities.
@@vestige2540 Ah yes, there's always ppl like you on the internet acting like a smartA--, do tell me this, if he wasnt trying to save his own skin, why would he panic huh!? Even with his hands amputated, there is no reason for him to panic, a demon like him would still remain calm but he is not.
@@danniton9831 Wasn't trying to be a smartass. Early in the episode the human lord aimed his sword at the demon group stating that demons killed his son to which the demon retorts that humans killed his father defusing the situation allowing the demons to leave. Seconds later the female demon asks "what is a father?" for leader to retort that he doesn't know. Throughout the whole series it is explicitly stated that demons don't feel human emotion and as Frieren herself says "They use language and emotion to manipulate and trick humans into lowering there guard". They are monsters who learnt language to kill humans more effectively, even the demons themselves agree to this statement. It wasn't a plee for Draht's life it was trick so he could backstab Frieren for lowering her guard.
Another scene of this is the demon child who killed the village chief's child. She was initially spared by the hero as she pleaded mercy for her being a child and the good, kind hero did hoping for redemption. She then killed another child to replace the chief's, when questioned why she said that pleading that she was a child seemed to cause the humans to spare her.
@@vestige2540 In those 2 scenes, those demons did not panic. You can literally see their expression and they are confident they will get away scott free. Here you see Dhrat's confidence quickly changes to panic. If he is trying to play with Frieren's emotion in that last moment, he would have the exact same expression as he did when he first walked into her cell, instead he was in a state of panic. Aura before she off herself also shows her expression changes to a state of panic. So Dhrat in that instance is literally him begging for his life. That demon child in his last moment, knowing that he's gonna die is still showing his poker face while trying to play with Frieren's emphathy. You can see the difference between that demon child and Dhrat.
Tbf she probably was likely wanting to instantly murder him the moment he stepped into the cell, w.o him even saying a word. He's not a person, he's just a monster afterall
What I love about this show is slowly showing how powerful Freiren really is. Like this is one of the first times I remember when she sort of lets loose, and she’s bare lay trying. Then with Aura, and then with the mage trials, concluding so far with the battle against her copy where she was throwing around black holes and golems
It was interesting to see Freiren use maybe 2-3 low-level spells throughout the series and in all of her battles and situations. She like: used Zoltrakk, flew, made flowers, and floated objects but nothing of too insane a magnitude. (granted her zolraak is like level 99 lmao) But, then her copy was just like: "Yeah, anyway, I cast Dark hole, gravity distortion, Annihilating death beams, level 500 eldritch golem, Black Zoltraak (ver. made to kil humans), and almighty push."
She could've just killed him outright with her first strike, but instead chose to cut him into 4 parts. This is because loot is dropped based on the number of body parts. Truly a gamer move.
@@gilgameshkingofheroes9466 He's a bad match-up because not even Serie can undo his curse, and she had to lose an entire spell just to defend against him. However, he would lose against Aura, ironically, as his mana is lower than her so her scale would work on him.
@@longps9528 not a bad match-up for serie. She can deflect his magic. She lost the spell when she gave it to that beard guy. Regarding his mana, Iam not aware whether it is higher or lower than aura.
Usually the only plot device to make OP characters interesting is to introduce more and more OP opponents. This series so far is using Frieren's untouchable status to reinforce her disconnected aloofness and the emotional problems that this causes for her. It's facinating that the actual battles that count in this show are taking place in Frieren's heart.
Well she and the past hero party already defeated the demon king/lord; so unless the author introduces a new demon regime leader, it seems unlikely that there will be more op characters introduced
Its not a show about the fighting. Its about the story. There is no need for Frieren to ever be challenged in a fight. The only challenges she faces are life's challenges
She is not OP in some boring Saitama way. She isn't invincible and was defeated 11 times by weaker enemies. She is just strong and experienced but not some imbalance stupid character bored of her own strength. The series showed us she is just always prepared for battle and know weak spots of her enemies. She don't just one-punched everyone to death with stupid face and go, she is smart warrior and she don't underestimate her rivals. As you can see I hate Onepunchman. Saitama is the worst part of his own show. Frieren is more complicated and realistic.
I cannot express how satisfying it is to see her immediately go *SPLAT* as soon as he tries the "Let's talk it out" route. A lot of "good guys" would hesitate, or maybe strike a dialogue, explaining why they won't listen to their enemies' lies... Frieren just goes: _No. No, we ain't talking out sh**. Not now, nor ever._ It's such an absolute and complete rejection of everything he is, since his entire existence is based on deceiving others. And it's not like she's afraid of what he has to say... She knows she wouldn't believe any of his lies anyway - she just sees the act of listening to him as completely worthless, right from the get go.
Spoiler This scene has even more impact after it’s explained that Demons wouldn’t even consider Frieren constantly masks her mana: to Draht she probably does look very weak.
It's amazing when they explained that she does the same thing that demons do to humans in a different way. Demons use speech to fool humans that rely on speech to understand eachother. Frieren uses mana to fool demons that rely on mana to understand others. It's a masterful narrative hit.
Frieren isn't merely NG+. The quest to defeat the Demon King took about 10 years. Frieren is 1000 years old at the minimum and has spent almost all of it learning and developing even more magic and becoming stronger. This means Frieren at this point is like a NG+100 character.
She spent most of those 1000 years just hidden in the forest, focused on suppressing her mana (which increased its total and her control), as her teacher told her to keep a low profile. It's only with the Hero's Party and afterwards that she started to travel the world again and learning new magic (like keeping up to date with human magic development).
Draht: "This is the strongest Magic Demonkind has EVER created..." Frieren: "But can you cast it if I sever your hands? Speaking of hands. CATCH THESE YOU CHILD."
When she killed him, she said to herself 先ずは一匹 (Mazu ha ippiki) which translates to (one down) but in Japanese context, "ippiki" is the way to count animals, shows that Frieren considers them truly as beasts
I love how she doesn't lie to him and is straight forward. Tells dude, "Not only am I strong, but I'm stronger than your boss." But arrogance just had dude like "Nah."
She just straight up killed him like it was tuesday. No angry spiel about how she hates demons and she's gonna eradicate every last one of them, she just does it like she's throwing out the trash.
Draht is a demon and even with his dying breath, was trying to trick Frieren into giving him a moment to strike. But Frieren is having none of his demon BS lol
this show is genuinely phenomenal. i dont think an anime has ever made me cry before but I was a mess after over half of the episodes. not to mention the animation, world building, and character development.. 100% a must watch
I like how he walks in, declares his intention to kill her, attempts twice to actually kill her, and the moment he's out of options, he suddenly wants killing off the table. I love when hypocrites get bodied.
“When I am Weaker Than You, I ask you for Freedom because that is according to your principles; when I am Stronger than you, I take away your Freedom Because that is according to my principles.” -Frank Herbert, Children of Dune
When you think about what she’s doing and saying, it looks like she’s trying to be cool and all, but she’s really goading Draht into attacking her and revealing his hidden trump cards. Not that she needed to do that, but it’s an extra precaution, I suppose. Frieren here isn’t telling Draht the truth. She’s saying she’s stronger than Aura. She said Aura on purpose. But while she’s saying that, she’s concealing her mana so that to Draht it would look like some mewling pathetic prey trying to puff itself up but is really, “obviously” weak. Frieren knows that he would judge her by the amount of mana she is showing. If she really wanted to intimidate him into submission, she would have released her mana. So she was intending to kill him the moment he stepped into the cell. She was just being a little extra cautious. Probably got surprised that it was as easy as it was, even after she said “Demons these days have no battle experience tsk.” Truly deserves her fearsome title of “The Slayer.”
Tanjiro goes over the line giving demons a therapy session so they can go into the afterlife with a semblancd of tranquility. Frieren goes out of her way to humilliate them and prolong their suffering. You're the man, Frieren.
I noticed how in all scenes where Friren kills demons we always see it from their eyes. Qual looking up to see Zoltraak, Draht looking into her eyes, and Aura watching at her back as she walks away.
Also, have you noticed that her method of killing them almost always mirrors their own technique? Qual killed with his signature spell, Draht beheaded, Aura controlled with her own spell, then beheaded with her own sword. I'd have to reread the Manga to confirm if that pattern holds, but it's clearly there in the early series.
When your name was well known, you probably let some of your enemies survive. The fact that not many (or almost not a single one) modern demons know about Frieren means that she never left any demon survive. That's a horror beyond imagination when you find out that your enemy is not well known because no one survived to tell the tales.

Elder mage: There is this one elf mage who killed the most Demons in history, Frieren. Younger mage: She's really that good at fighting them? Elder mage: Hmm? There is no fight...
She uses the counting word “ippiki” when she says “That’s one down.” This word is not used for people, and generally used for things like animals and beasts. I thought that was a good touch.
You know when I first watched this I thought she was taking needless risks Now I know more about Frieren I just assume with her battle experience, mana and hugh skill set she was ready for anything before he even entered the corridor.
"Demons these days lack battle experience" Hmm, I wonder why that is, Frieren the Slayer? What could possibly be killing the demons that do get to face combat?
On that note, if the stated goal was extinction, points must be deducted. When reducing the population of a pest to absolute zero, one must be the very epitome of thorough, and she clearly missed a few.
@@Blyndirthe main goal was to kill the Demon lord in 10 years. It's probably natural they would miss a few since they were taking the whole demon civilization from the roots first. Also apparently some demons are more scary than others that they intentionally avoided.
@@Blyndirshe missed a lot of them. She is aware of that. Its just that she doesnt run around killing demons. It seems more like she just kills all that come near her
She has complete use of her arms and voice (the two main components in most of fantasy needed to use magic) and appears to be perfectly calm while not struggling with maintaining a magic shield to block your wire. Clearly this is the perfect time to stand completely still and monologue about how you've already won.
This is legit one of the best scenes in the entire season. It's that perfectly needed example of Frierens experience in fighting demon, showing the viewer actively how good she is at what she does, and counter to that the lack of experience on the other side.
For what it's worth, Frieren could have broken those strings easily, but chose to humble Draht the most humiliating way possible. Taking his hands and make him feel as helpless as possible. Let the dread loom over him before ending his life.
@@bobbobson6290 do remember Frieren was suppressing her Mana, and has yet to even cast named spells. She may have been just letting the demon brag about it.
@@bobbobson6290nope. She even says when the demon starts to brag that he clearly lacks experience, this was a leason, not a desperate escape. Furthermore, her mana is enough to stop a 500 years old demon, i think its fair to say that she con ld have broken free from the string easily
3 points she gave that she really is strong: 1. She said she's stronger than his master 2. Didn't kill her on his first strike 3. She's calm af Dude should have run
Running wont work, his fate was sealed the moment she revealed the first information. I dont think Frieren is just gonna let him walk out of there with that knowledge.
Demonic pride meant he wasn't walking out of that room without someone dying. Even his plea for mercy was a ploy to get Frieren to give him a chance at a death blow. Sadly for him, she'd heard that song and dance before and wasn't about to fall for such a pathetic attempt.
I wonder how many times she has seen these demons pretend to be scared and ask for forgiveness just to survive,I don’t think it would ever not be annoying whenever they do it. It also probably fuels her with more resolve to exterminate them
The moment he couldn't snap Frieren's neck, was already a sign how strong Frieren is. But as usual demons only base their perception of power thru gauging mana over their own, so Draht was just smugly blabbing around to his doom.
This is war long periods of boredom mixed with short bursts of extreme violence. Frieren was criticizing Drahr's lack of combat experience because no warrior would turn his back on his enemy even if he thinks the enemy in capacitated. Draht literally did that and stayed within strike range of Frieren.
Him not restraining her limbs to ensure she couldn't fight is another sign how he never been in a real fight, probably coasted on his one easy trick for decades and never thought about what if someone were to survive and striked back.
This shows the usefulness of Frieren hiding her mana. Draht was so sure of himself till his last moments and couldn't even imagine losing to her even after she easily neutralized his attack. I think he kept thinking that it took everything she got just to defend her neck and didn't even consider the possibility of her counter attacking.
I love how the show communicates that they didn't actually learn to talk, they learned to lie. Whatever a demon says it is it is still a soulless monster who cares about exactly one thing: eating people.
@storietellermusic Spoilers for later: We see later when Frieren "fights" (again, wasn't even really a fight) Draht's boss, Aura, that she is much stronger than Aura as well. Which, considering that Draht was merely Aura's subordinate, means that the power difference between him and Frieren must have been MASSIVE. However, Frieren hid her mana so well that Drah was full convinced that she was weaker than him.
In Japanese, she said "one down" as "ippiki" rather than "hitori". This has significant point how she categorize the demon as beast/creature not human-being.
Well it seemed like one of the demons (weirdly enough) agreed with her that they're more like wild beasts then humans. I find it weird that with such a level of introspective ability they're still so arrogant lol.
I think THIS was the moment for me. The show was already really interesting and of course i liked the main cast, but when "The Slayer" came out the series just got me giddy with anticipation at the possibilities! So i binged the manga, and i gotta say it has not disappointed.
This fight actually led me to a suspicion or a scenario of someone using their mana as defensive shield, besides those hexagon projections they showed so far. I was right about this being a foreshadowing when that girl who can cut with her magic had her backstory on her first exam was revealed.
This is one of rhe only times we hear Frieren talk about her relative strength. She did give him a chance to back out, but I'm sure she also knew a demon would never walk away.
Something that goes unnoticed in the translation is the sheer disrespect she shows the demon kind right after she kills him "Mazu wa ippiki" is translated to "That's one down." "ippiki" is a counter word for small animals (cats, dogs, rabbits and so on). So a literal translation of the meaning would be something like "That's one *small* animal" or in this case probably the meaning that she wants to conveys is "That is one creature dead".
one thing lost in translation is when she said “That’s one down”. In Japanese, you need to use a quantifier to describe the things you’re giving a quantity of like “one cup of coffee” where the “cup of” is the quantifier. She used a quantifier in Japanese that is normally used on animals. She doesn’t see demons equally as human. What a savage!
My impression is that the blades and guard she uses in this scene are, like "The pinnacle of magic" non-spells. Rather, they're raw mana constructs, and it might be that they're usable primarily due to her training with mana suppression.
There would be even more terrifying usage of pure raw mana later on. This is pinnacle for humanity rn bcs most mage needed medium to make their mana be destructive. It's basically like psychic to normal people
Demons as depicted in Frieren are honestly fascinating. They really don't have many feelings or thoughts behind them. Like she said, they evolved from a species that used to prey on humans by acting like they're in distress like crying, calling out for help etc. So to them, acting distressed and begging for help might just be a 'defense mechanism' rather than actual genuine emotions. Like that demon kid who the villagers took pity on and tried to raise. But then Aura cries too when she's cutting her own throat. So maybe they do feel things but only when they're in personal danger. Their species are very self centered after all and doesn't feel anything about their own dying.

so the german experience would be like an english speaker watching a series where one guy suspected of a murder is called Innocent and the other suspect is named Guilty and watching everyone be shocked when Guilty is found guilty.
I like to believe she only waited this long to kill him cause she wanted to analyze and learn his spell
For a spell so simple, probably. I mean, it only took a month to analyze and learn the far more complex “gold transmutation” spell from Midas the gold demon.
Also, Demon magic/ curse is very difficult to decipher. Like flying for example, while human and elf can emulate it, they're not fully comprehend the principle, and can only emulate a portion of it
@@hafirenggayuda
In terms of pure science, one demon spell is easily more advanced then anything humans/elves/any other species can learn, because they are so individual and carried on for centuries potentially.
Draht went from being overconfident to panic then finally begging for his life in just mere seconds.
Love that Frieren didn't hesitate to kill him when he tried to trick her by begging for his life like a human.
Tbf she probably was likely wanting to instantly murder him the moment he stepped into the cell, w.o him even saying a word. He's not a person, he's just a monster afterall
She knows that trick. She hates it as much as demons hate her hiding her mana.
Yeah she isn't going to do that mistake again, the Hero Party did that in the past and thing didn't end well, not doing that one again.
Demon’s words are completely useless. It’s a mockery of speech.
(granted her zolraak is like level 99 lmao)
But, then her copy was just like: "Yeah, anyway, I cast Dark hole, gravity distortion, Annihilating death beams, level 500 eldritch golem, Black Zoltraak (ver. made to kil humans), and almighty push."

love how when he realizes he's done for, he still begs to talk. Frieren was really right about demons and their use of speech.
Macht came pretty close to that
@@rhapzodyk541 I’m not sure if Macht has made an appearance yet. Then again, I haven’t watched todays new episode.
Frieren just goes:
_No. No, we ain't talking out sh**. Not now, nor ever._
It's such an absolute and complete rejection of everything he is, since his entire existence is based on deceiving others.
And it's not like she's afraid of what he has to say... She knows she wouldn't believe any of his lies anyway - she just sees the act of listening to him as completely worthless, right from the get go.
She has been fighting demons for a very long time, probably has heard better pleas from other demons as well.

This scene has even more impact after it’s explained that Demons wouldn’t even consider Frieren constantly masks her mana: to Draht she probably does look very weak.

Frieren was going to kill them all the moment she saw them. She has no chill when it comes to demons.
The scene that made me fall in love with Frieren. Was invested from ep 1 but this moment solidied the series

Frieren goes out of her way to humilliate them and prolong their suffering.

Draht: "That's not fair. She's smurfing!"
Perfectly balanced, one moment Frieren would hit and the next Drath would catch
I noticed how in all scenes where Friren kills demons we always see it from their eyes. Qual looking up to see Zoltraak, Draht looking into her eyes, and Aura watching at her back as she walks away.
Also, have you noticed that her method of killing them almost always mirrors their own technique?
Qual killed with his signature spell, Draht beheaded, Aura controlled with her own spell, then beheaded with her own sword.
I'd have to reread the Manga to confirm if that pattern holds, but it's clearly there in the early series.

This is probably the most impressive fight in the series so far, despite how short it is.
@storietellermusic Spoilers for later:
We see later when Frieren "fights" (again, wasn't even really a fight) Draht's boss, Aura, that she is much stronger than Aura as well.

I was right about this being a foreshadowing when that girl who can cut with her magic had her backstory on her first exam was revealed.

That’s because draht is an idiot. Why did lady aura ever let him be part of the diplomatic convoy

Her cold look to Draht before killing him is satisfying.
one thing lost in translation is when she said “That’s one down”. In Japanese, you need to use a quantifier to describe the things you’re giving a quantity of like “one cup of coffee” where the “cup of” is the quantifier. She used a quantifier in Japanese that is normally used on animals. She doesn’t see demons equally as human. What a savage!
"I always do demons dirty; in front of their moms, if I can." -Frieren
My impression is that the blades and guard she uses in this scene are, like "The pinnacle of magic" non-spells. Rather, they're raw mana constructs, and it might be that they're usable primarily due to her training with mana suppression.
There would be even more terrifying usage of pure raw mana later on. This is pinnacle for humanity rn bcs most mage needed medium to make their mana be destructive. It's basically like psychic to normal people

Yup, Draht, you're right... just not in the way you thought.
Draht: "Why do I hear boss music"
