    The be quiet! Silent Base 601 is priced at around $130, landing it in a highly competitive realm of cases. At this price-point, be quiet! has to prove itself in multiple categories. We look at build quality, cable management, thermals, acoustics, and ease-of-installation in our Silent Base 601 case review.

      Gamers Nexus Steve you have got to address Intel’s recent Xeon CL presentation.
      What the hell is going on over there? They bash AMD for glueing, until they figure it out. Then they put together another pre-loaded comparison by disabling AMD’s SMT.. wtf? All before AMD’s Epyc pre-release conference, which seems to be a different beast all together.
      Is this computex/Principle Tech all over again?
      Is it possible to post record profits but still be in full blown panic mode?
      They went from leading the way to misleading away.

      If you are doing a open vs closed case noise comparison, you need to take into account that the human ear doesn't have a flat frequency sensitivity. We hear some frequencies better than others, and find some more annoying than others. You'll need to consider the frequency spectrum of the noise, not just the total power.

    • @PainterVierax
      @PainterVierax 5 років тому

      That's my conclusion too : In this kind of silent case market, the Fractal Define R line makes more sense with less airflow restriction in the front and a removable PSU shroud.
      As discussed in comments under previous videos, the noise suppression is more effective on high pitch noises, that can turn you mad like tinnitus. Also the pitch-changing and intermittent noises of bad PWM/DC fan controllers, coil-whine and HDD accesses are the most annoying sounds. This is the main purpose of those silent cases and can't be totally measured with a simple Db-meter (you have to analyze the frequency specter trough time).

      Steve / Patrick.. I think you missed a trick here. I think it's fair to say these types of silent cases would be best tested in a water cooled setup - there is a removable mount for a radiator. Surely the point is to have at least a cpu rad with some low rpm fans to mitigate the "issue" with cpu temps in a push config. These are nicely designed well thought out cases with decent build quality at a fair price, imo I'd like to hear your thoughts on cooling given the scenario I mentioned. I appreciate you must test against a standard - like for like, but there is an argument to be made that people going for quiet setups would be looking at better cooling solutions as well.

      For my DBP900, cutting it open made a huge difference in noise. The fan controller applied just 400rpm instead of 800rpm to the seven 140mm fans to maintain 40°C water temperature.

      Even testing at the same fan config with the same fan brand would be so helpful. I would like to see which case really performs best with the least variables possible. It could be that this case is superior to all the others, but the fans are garbage (very hypothetical but I hope it gets my point across).

      @@horstmeier2664 the fans are okay but not suitable for restrictive intake. there's not much airflow on DBP900 with stock fan. i even changed those fans with 2 deltas running at 1600 idle. they're noisier but still within my range thanks to the noise dampening.

  • @McMeowFace
    @McMeowFace 5 років тому +11

    More fans doesn't necessarily mean more noise, it's a similar tradeoff as open vs closed flow cases - the noise doesn't scale linearly as more fans are added. Adding a third 140mm fan might reduce the overall noise if it means fans spin slower under load. Additionally, would love to see analysis if high static pressure fans work better for cases with restricted flow front panels.

  • @jubuttib
    @jubuttib 5 років тому +35

    Apart from pure noise level, the noise quality is really important too, and the foam can, when done well, help with that immensely. When I added a foam + bitumen kit to my old Antec case I don't think the actual noise level went down by much, but it became a much less annoying "hum" than it used to be. Unfortunately the noise quality is very user specific and not easily quantifiable, so would be really hard for you to test terribly well.
    Oh well, I'll carry on with my Define R5 with a total of 7 Noctua fans, if you count the CPU ones, running at about 5-6V. =)

    Happy owner of not one, but two DarkBase 900s. Exceptional build quality, good features, nice design, and good noise suppression. I run the fans of a NH-D15 aggressively towards max and could go to sleep with greatly reduced noise. Of course the foam works. Goes without saying.

    This is the best review on the internet. I have a home studio and I make music, record YT videos, and want a really silent case. But based on some experiments I made with other PCs and by positioning fans inside the case, I always realized that air flowing from bottom to top is better. That's why I struck me that this case has that PSU case at the bottom. Anyway, I'll keep looking. I see I'm the right channel :)

      @McMeowFace 5 років тому +14

      +1 I get the desire to test cases in their "stock" mode for a better level playing field, but by doing that it misses the important detail of how good this case could actually be, which is a lot more interesting premise than stock performance. Perhaps there could be two sets of tests, first for stock, second that's a "GN Suggested Build" style test. For this particular scenario, I'd love to see comparison of low vs high static pressure fans in the front to get a sense if that would make any difference with the restrictive panels. Would be a good indicator in general for all cases that fall into that category.

    • @megapro125
      @megapro125 5 років тому

      @@McMeowFace In that scenario it's just hard to draw the line I mean if you compare a case that supports 6 fan slots with a case with 4 slots do you fill them with the maximum amount of Noctua A12x25 fans? Or if one case is clearly designed to be used with a CLC would you still compare it using air cooling entirely? It's hard to make a fair comparison with so many variables.

    • @McMeowFace

      @@megapro125 True, there are endless way to tweak things, but I would like to see a configuration that's closer to the case's full potential. The one thing I really like about be quiet! cases is their floating drive cages. My problem with the Fractal Design R6, which in my opinion is the main competitor to many cases in their lineup, is that if you want more than 2 hard drives you need to put this ugly great wall up, so that you have this lovely, large glass side panel yet with the PSU shroud and HDD shroud you can only see a 1/4 of the internals. Anyway, I bought the Fractal S2 for the third HDD bay, passing up on the be quiet cases due to them being a little too restrictive with regards to airflow.

    Tempered glass is actually a very good insulator. Quieter than that steel panel with foam on it. And adding fans does not necessarily mean that it raises sound levels. More fans can move the same amount of air at lower speeds, actually lowering sound levels. I love my be quiet! 120mm Silent Wings 3 PWM fans. Much quieter than the Corsair and Cooler Master fans that the case and AIO came with.

    This is why PWM fans are better than manual controls. Fans adjust to the heat output, which can be lowered via power settings. It's not overly complicated.

    GN, does it make sense to place 3 more fans also on the top where the AIO cooler rack is? I ordered the 700 version and I was wondering if does make sens to pay for 3 more fans + 1 additional to the front, I don't care about noise. Thanks for the nice review!

    Own it. It's amazingly quiet, thermals are OK. I installed 3 extra 140mm PWM controlled fans PWM controlled in the front and moved the original front fan to the top back corner.

    This review's from a few years ago now, but the price of the case has come down and I must say, it's now pretty tempting. My rig's currently in a Meshify C which is a good case, except my GPU fans cannot be slowed down enough to be inaudible in this case. Would have to give up the window which means I'd have to pop the side off to see the diagnostic readout, but if I'm troubleshooting, I'd probably have the side popped off anyway.
    Anyway, thanks for keeping the review up as a reference.

    The question about silent cases with poor airflow, vs high airflow cases with low RPM fans is exactly the question I've been looking for for years now that no one seems to really want to answer. Really looking forward to that (hopefully before I buy my next case before Christmas).

    It would have been nice if he did a comparison with the 801 which does have an extra intake fan at the front. I wonder if it makes a difference and if so, how much? I also wonder if placing an additional intake fan on the PSU shroud to pull in air from below would help with the thermals.

    One little point of crticism, installing an extra fan could be a solution (no compromise noise level for idle loads) if you use one with PWM and only turn it on for heavy loads. So it still can be useful if the thermals suffer a bit too much to make it less noisy. People who spend that much on a case probably have a PWM header om the motherboard for the case fans.

    I imagine that the main benefits of sound dampening have to be noisy components unrelated to cooling. Things like hard drives, pump noise, coil whine, blown VRMs, etc
    Looking forward to the comparison video though

  • @NielsHeusinkveld

    Does this case indeed dampen high pitched coil whine type noises better?
    When you compare it to a more open case with matching sound levels, how about putting in a coil whine heavy graphics card and see if the sound 'signature' is any different, i.e. if the foam actually cuts down the more annoying high frequency parts of the sound.

    i would love to see your case reviews ALSO include 'ideal' fan setup. in the instance of the 601, after stock tests, put in 2 or 3 more of the silent wing fans and test again. more fans could allow for lower RPM with similar sound/performance. would be nice tests for all case comparisons.

    • @bengrogan9710
      @bengrogan9710 5 років тому

      The only reason they don't is that "ideal" is variable.
      For example full fan population for to exhaust and front intake often results in hot air re circulation.
      Claiming "Ideal" with GN's attention to detail would mandate benching all possible fan configs, easily tripling the number of tests they would need.

      @@trek1016 They've mentioned it in a few AskGn's in the past -
      General gist seems to be a few points -
      1. 360mm or 420mm top rads are a bad plan, the top front fan will often recirculate hot air
      2. PSU shrouds, regardless of bottom case fans choke GPU's
      3. If the PSU intakes from inside the case it punishes the GPU by robbing it of airflow
      4. "Chimney effect" as an idea is bullshit, you will never have natural heat rising with even a single case fan.
      5. Many cases vary: Some do very well in negative pressure, even if the suck as positive pressure
      6. Try your case without front filters, Especially with a restrictive front like of this case
      7. Vertical GPU: KILL IT WITH FIRE

    7:26 - Not bothering to put in the IO shield, eh? That's ok, I completely understand you :D
    Speaking of cases, on a different note, let me just vent here - I just finished building a new PC in a Dark Base Pro 900 rev.2 case and I can freely say, without any exaggeration, I haven't worked with a less user-friendly case in my whole life! Dealing with that PSU shroud (and the PSU mounting) has to be one of the most frustrating experiences I've ever had in more than 2 decades of PC building, not to mention that it's probably like an oven for the PSU down there. There are plenty of thumbscrews all over the place that will still require a screwdriver and the threading is done badly (large angle variance) while the material is so soft that I managed to actually strip two PCI screw holes (the holes, not the screws!) - they could take a lesson from CM from 10 years ago on how to do proper thumbscrews (and screws in general). The cable management is also annoying as there is very little room at the back so the ticker cables will end up pressed against the back cover transmitting case vibrations to it anyway, making all those screw dampeners pointless...
    All of this in a 230€ case! Sure, it looks great and has a solid airflow for a 'silent' case, but it's less user-friendly than most sub-100€ cases. Unless you *REALLY* need its features, so much so to endure viscerally hating it during the build, stay away from it! You have been warned.

  • @fishlexic

    Hey steve, I have an idea for a video based selfishly on an interest of my own but one that others may find useful as well. I have a particular use case in which i need a quiet pc for mixing audio which is not overly taxing on computer resources but the need for silence is definitely there. I am also a gamer so i want to be able to push my system for maximum frames.
    So my idea is doing a video on a system that is very quiet under lower loads but can push enough air for gaming. Obviously id prefer the computer to be quiet whilst gaming but am ok to sacrifice noise whilst pushing the system as i know you cant have your cake and eat it too.
    I know this can be achieved somewhat with custom fan curves but where the idea has merit for a video i think is modifying existing cases (such as one of be quiet's) with extra fans or cooling which is different than your normal case reviews for obvious reasons. Im ok with buying a case and removing all the fans and replacing them with better fans such as noctua versions etc if it can achieve my goal or adding close loop coolers etc.
    Love your content and reviews, best on you tube for sure
    PS 8700k v's 9700k gaming and workload benchmarks/reviews coming?
