This is the first video from Madonna I saw as a 4 year old kid with my elder brother. He's a huge fan of her music. I remember him explaining to me about the graphics of the video, different interpretations and all that I can remember is being scared lol. Then he showed me lucky star mv to calm me down. English isn't our first language so we used to pause and listen to the words many times. Hah. I had no choice but to stan since I was a kid . After many years now I truly admire and understand the meaning behind this masterpiece ❤️

It's not just about the "marketing", it's mainly about HER SONGWRITING and PRODUCING, and of course the inimitable haunting SINGING. No one else in the pop world did what she did, no amount of professional vocal training could ever emulate the splendid beauty of her mystical hummings. The 90s was made ugly by many other less talented artists with those cheesy, over-the-top screaming sappy ballads while Madonna did an exact opposite thing with this song. If anything she took the risk to sell something completely unusual. I am a fan because of her talent as an artist, not because she's a businesswoman. I have no interest in her "marketing", it's her artistry that matters at the end of the day, not her income.

Madonna was inspired by the movie 'The Sheltering Sky' where a couple goes to Morocco to try to salvage their marriage but end up falling prey to the dangers surrounding them that turn catastrophic - Frozen was filmed in the Californian Desert - reporters asked her why a song called Frozen was filmed in the desert? - The desert represents the frozen ice where there is no visible life and is visually barren - also at night deserts become freezing cold - she uses influences from Moroccan and Indian culture along with her practice of yoga (hence the henna on her hands and on her palm the Hindu symbol 'Om' and her yoga movements). Madonna in the music video seems she's aligning herself with the Greek Goddess, Hecate - which happens to be the goddess of witchcraft, crossroads, the moon and dogs -bitches to be exact. There are three apparitions of Madonna - Hecate is known to be a triple goddess, and she is often portrayed in her triple form. Hecate is also the goddess of black female dogs, and Madonna does shape-shift into a black bitch -as well as black ravens. Madonna was in her prime during this time - Early to late 90s she had the full package - the looks, the body and the voice with the Midas touch in the music she produced when everything she released was perfect. Looking back at it now I didn't realise I was witnessing the pinnacle of her career - I still recall dancing to all the ray of light songs at nightclubs..... I was working in London in 1998 mmm the memories lol - it goes so fast.

The ultimate Madonna ballad. I don’t think she’s ever done another before or since that’s this masterful and many of her ballads are phenomenal. The strings, the synths, the flute (?!?), those delicate vocals with almost tremulous vibrato… and of course, the hmmmmmms!!!! Then add that the video adds some epic visuals. Wow. Pure art.
I read an article about the symbolism of this video. I forget the Greek goddess this represents, but I remember that she has three forms and the animal that is associated with her is a male dog. The ravens/crows must also symbolize something. I forget. I think the henna symbol on her hand is ‘om’. It’s also cool that the director filmed her in a desert, which we normally associate with heat, but at night can actually be very cold… it’s also very dry, dead and isolated… devoid of most life forms.
Looked it up, the goddess is Hecate.

Madonna's most prolific era was the 90's IMO, from "Erotica" to "Ray Of Light", yes she could push sexual boundaries, but she also had a more spiritual side, you couldn't just put a label on her as an artist, except maybe one: Queen Of Pop. She rocked that decade, that's for damn sure.

@Bridge The Gap Reactions…The power and genius of Madonna’s artistic vision like in this mv is that it draws differing reactions from viewers much like what art painting masterpieces do. For me, it evokes a dreamlike, mystical expression of a female angst, melancholy over the object of her unrequited love-so much so that she appears to be casting a spell -“if I could melt your heart…give yourself to me..”
This Ray of Light era in her life and career show the deep influence of her spiritual journey into Eastern mysticism (Hinduism, Buddhism, Judaism/Kabbalah, Ashtanga yoga) in search of answers that changed her perspective on life and career.
Really appreciate your insightful reaction and for covering the artistry of Madonna.

Frozen was written by Madonna and Patrick Leonard and produced by M, Pat and William Orbit. Patrick Leonard began in a band that went nowhere and session musician, eventually he began touring keyboardist with The Jacksons on their post Motown tours taking over as their musical director for their 1980 Triumph (Post MJ's Off the Wall) and 84 Victory(Post Thriller and first and only your with all 6 brothers and Michael's last with his brothers) Tours. Because Madonna had gotten Freddy Demann who was MJ's first manager post Joseph Jackson to be her manager, Freddy asked the band that toured on the Victory Tour to be Madonna's band on her 1985 Virgin Tour. Pat did keys and was musical director. On tour Pat and Madonna began writing together, he worked as a co-writer and co-producer on her 1986 True Blue album, 1987 Who's That Girl Soundtrack, tour keyboardist and musical director of the 1987 Who's That Girl Tour, the 1989 Like A Prayer album and the 1990 I'm Breathless soundtrack with their most known collaborations being Live To Tell, Papa Don't Preach, Open Your Heart, La Isla Bonita, Who's That Girl, Like A Prayer, Oh Father, Cherish, Hanky Panky and Something to Remember. Pat and her are still extremely close and they write an occasional song like Frozen together from time to time. I think this was Madonna talking to herself to let go of the pain of the death of her mother as she moves into being a mother. I love her performance of this song on The Sticky and Sweet 2009 leg and on the Madame X Tour

In ancient Greek religion and mythology, the Moirai (/ˈmɔɪraɪ, -riː/, also spelled Moirae or Mœræ; Ancient Greek: Μοῖραι, "lots, destinies, apportioners"), often known in English as the Fates (Latin: Fata), were the personifications of fate; their Roman equivalent was the Parcae (euphemistically the "sparing ones"), and there are other equivalents in cultures that descend from the Proto-Indo-European culture. Their number became fixed at three: Clotho ("spinner"), Lachesis ("allotter") and Atropos ("the unturnable", a metaphor for death

To understand the video, one must know that it represents the myth of the Greek goddess Hecate, mistress of magic, a triple divinity made up of Demeter, Persephone and Hecate. Demeter is "the huntress", the female equivalent of Orion, whose constellation appears in the video and to which she ascends together with the moon, a symbol of Persephone, who represents protection for wounded women. The cult of Hecate was prohibited in Christian times and she was considered a witch. In the 90s, she herself was called a witch on several occasions and compared to the devil by the Vatican, in response she decides to create the album "right of Life", with a strong spiritual charge of ancient beliefs, she is linked to Hecate for that reason, and the theme frozen is a direct message to the Vatican. I am Hecate, not what you say I am. It is a masterfully executed work of art.

Hi Jonny, I’ve just discovered your channel and am really enjoying your Madonna reactions. I recently went to a ‘Pitchblack Playback’ listening of the Ray Of Light album which was absolutely fantastic and has made me appreciate the album and it’s production even more than before.
Frozen is an absolute classic and Orbit’s expert production is so sensitively employed: changing up the rhythms as the song progresses; subtly adding extra layers throughout (e.g. the wonderful backing vocals only appearing on the final chorus).
You may already know this but the strings were arranged by Craig Armstrong who, as well as composing various film scores has also worked with Massive Attack, U2, Suede, Tina Turner. He also arranged the strings for Madonna’s Marvin Gaye cover ‘I Want You’ which I saw you also appreciated. He has a great album ‘The Space Between Us’ which I think you would enjoy.
Incidentally, I didn’t see the album version of ‘Drowned World/Substitute For Love’ among your reactions, but did see that a number of Madonna videos had received the dreaded UA-cam strike so maybe I missed it. This is my favourite on the album and probably my favourite Madonna song of all so would be interested to see your reaction to that too.
Anyway, I’ve rambled long enough… Looking forward to exploring your channel further.

The symbolism of three Madonna's speaks to the ancient concept of the Triple Goddess which is present in many cultures. In this video, Madonna is playing on the image of herself as the Cosmic Mother (which makes sense given the name Madonna) which is also related to the symbolism of the Dark Goddess. Google these concepts for more information. Madonna as Cosmic Mother/Dark Goddess is most evident during the instrumental bridge where she is literally superimposed against the night sky with wandering moon. The moon is another ancient symbol of the Goddess, especially in her Dark form. The Dark Goddess in Hindu religion is Kali. The theme of darkness also speaks to the inner/unconscious realm and going within to find freedom and truth. Madonna is not only speaking as a lover in this song, inviting the listener to open their hearts, she is speaking as the inner, unconscious, dark realm itself (which is where these messages ultimately originate). It's a brilliant and deeply profound and beautiful song.

In the song, Madonna is lamenting about a cold man(?) whose ego and obsession with consumption is preventing happiness and how she wishes she could melt his heart and break his ego/fixation on consumption so happiness could occur. The symbol on her palm is Hindu for OM, meaning she holds the power of the highest spiritual being. Her henna and six arms hint that she has the power of Shiva, Goddess of destruction and war, in order to break his ego/fixation on consumption and free his spirit to find happiness by connecting with the whole (of the universe). Madonna studied Kabbalah, in which one of the demons / unbalanced forces translates as the dispersals of ravens (which occurs in the video). Her meditating hand symbols suggest meditation can help fight the unbalanced forces.

To me this song was always about a 1998, post Lourdes Madonna, talking to her earlier, self-obsessed, harder self. It's more subtle than say the obvious references in "Drowned World/ Substitute for Love", but that's what I got from it. "You're so consumed with how much you get/ You waste your time with hate and regret/ You're broken when your heart's not open" to me say "you can't give or receive true love until you're open to it". Having Lourdes taught her to love unconditionally. Ultimately "you hold the key", which is similar to the "happiness lies in your own hands" line from "Secret".

I think the movement and maybe the drapery is inspired by the work of the dancer Martha Graham. Partially anyways.
The tripling of her body was the idea of the director who did Aphex Twin, and Portishead videos and other artists.

Yes, she admired and met Marta Graham and in 1994 Madonna did for Harper's Baazar a photo shooting in hommage to Marta Graham where you can see already Frozen movements, playing with drapery, with the hands etc you could see already the future Frozen choreo there...very beautiful pictures...

I just filmed a reaction to the Rain video and commented on her hand movements in that being similar to Frozen and I thought I remembered a comment saying that, but I think it was this comment. Anyway, that photo you posted has her with dark her so it must have been around that time? (EDIT- the Rain video was filmed in May 93 so maybe she was already expressing that stuff in the year before that photoshoot?)

I think it's her best song.
She has some slow songs I love but this sounded like nothing on the radio at the time It was revolutionary and very brave.
Ray of light was the first album that received critical acclaim and awards It didn't last but she stopped being about shock, awe and hypersexualized.
I put in three requests for music on Patreon and I felt like you shot me down a little bit.
If I had a Madonna song I'd like to see reviewed it would be You must love me from Evita

Ah sorry, I was just explaining why I don't do many celine reactions, no offence intended! I'll get to your requests definitely. Evita will be an interesting one because I saw the movie when it came out and, at that age, it didn't really make an impression on me. I'm interested to hear those songs now especially as I've heard that that is a great period for her vocals
