      No, actually a film critic at the New York Times actually already responded to criticism that she can't act by saying she's always been a great actress except her films are 4 minutes long

      This is why she was so good in Evita because it was essentially a two hour long music video! Haha 😂😂 Seriously though she was outstanding in the movie because she can demonstrate emotions through music. Anyone who says that she can't act only need to see "Lament" from Evita which is sung live as Eva delivers her last words while lying on her death bed. I swear a few people in the cinema started sobbing. She should have at least been nominated for an Academy award, especially after winning the Golden Globe. ❤️❤️

      @Pink Panther Actually she’s a great actress in the right directing hands. One of M’s biggest issues is that she’s a control freak and acting in movies is giving up control which she has admitted is one of the hardest things for her to do. But she’s done very well in certain roles like “A League Of Their Own”, “Dangerous Game”, “Dick Tracy” and “Evita”. Quentin Tarantino has even said he wants to put her in a movie of his when he has the right vehicle for her. He loves her as an actress

      Her videos are always amazing. About her vocals - hats off to Whitney, Mariah, Celine, etc. But there's a certain vulnerability in Madonna's voice that makes her unique and grounded. I'll take her style over other singers' vocal aerobics, anytime.

    A masterpiece! It's so sad that this song couldn't be a real single due to some copyright issues. It would've been a huge hit with a properly release. Anyway, this is still a gem.

      I remember in the UK BBC radio one used to play this as a promo for the album. The fact it was Massive Attack meant that Pete Tong played it on his Friday night dance show. One Friday at the start of the show he played MA, Protection, Safe from harm and then this. I remember he said that he was starting the show with three from Massive Attack. ❤️❤️

    Madonna+Massive Attack+Marvin Gaye=pure gold, what else?!
    I dont know if Madonna has ever explain anything about the video, but for me is inspired in Jean Cocteau theater play: "La voix humaine", a monologue of a women in love, sinking in pain and despair because she is waiting the last call of her lover, the good bye call...and well, at the end, maybe she doesn't answer because she prefer to avoid the reality, that is over...or maybe because after to go through all the pain and suffering she got over the relation and the call arrive too late...

    In this era I was obsessed with all that came out if England like Massive, Tricky, Bjork, William Orbit, Portishead….When Madonna picked up on it, these bands were already ‘known’ in Europe and defined their sounds. I always thought this song is the essence of this ‘genre’ and then turned pop

    a small thing and maybe it's just a crazy thought, but this was the first time I watched the video and noticed she held her belly in the bathroom... could she be pregnant by the man she's broken up with? Might have just been a small moment where she feels a physical pain from the emotional turmoil she's in, but it adds another dimension to her desperation if she's also pregnant. Agree she's a good actress in her videos... I think it's because she has final creative control over them with the director, so she can make sure the final version is excellent, and she probably feels freer to act with abandon and naturalness. Didn't always translate in films, but to a degree you have to blame the directors for that as well. Great song, elegant video in its simplicity. Definitely deserved more airplay and acclaim.

    i do like how much this contrasts the original. It goes from quite an optimistic song, like someone at the start of a relationship, new love if you will, trying to tell her how much he loves her and hoping she loves him as much as he loves her. Whereas the Madonna version comes across more like a breakup. It's full of heartbreak and turmoil. She's very much still in love with someone who doesn't seem to be in love with her anymore (if ever), and she's trying to process that.

    I love this cover and video!!! This video shows she can be an awesome actress but the problem with her as an actress is no one, her, the director of any film, any co-stars no the audience can divorce Madonna the persona from her so unless she's doing herself no one believes the acting. Nelle Hooper asked her to do this cover and the Marvin Gaye estate was against issuing it as a single to promote the Marvin Gaye tribute that had come out so she put on Something to Remember as well so she could release it. This song and the album something to remember made me realize something, non of Madonna's ballads are love songs, they are all about loss or some sort of trauma or a breakup. She emotes pathos and loss like no other artist. Also I think that's part of why the critics dont like her. Aside from the dance songs and the self empowerment anthems the sense of sadness and melancholy of her songs is too much for most. But I think this sense of loss comes from the loss of her mother at the age of 5. I hope one day she gets the recognition for superb presentation of such feelings. And like I've said before every video and four needs to be seen, she is a performance artist

    • @bridgethegapreactions
      @bridgethegapreactions  Рік тому +2

      Absolutely! I call it "the Madonna sadness" for short. She deals with melancholy in such an effective way. I actually think it may have put me off her in the 90s. I liked some of her upbeat classic singles, but I remember thinking This Used To Be My Playground and Don't Cry For Me Argentina were interminable (saw those two movies, didn't like then either). That was then - I'm sure I'll be more ready to deal with that now.

    I adore this song and video. Not much to say that you didn't already say (great visual actress, beautiful arrangement and video). I love Massive Attack but feel you on how it can feel like a bit too much - I'm sure you've heard their first album, BLUE LINES, but I think it's my favorite because it's not as heavy/dark. So while I prefer the music/beats of the later albums, their first two albums have more of a lighter R&B feel. Check them out if you haven't already... Oh, and side note, after she did this song she really wanted to sing on an instrumental Massive Attack track that would become "Teardrop." Apparently not everyone in the group agreed so she didn't end up doing it but I think it inspired some of the sound/beats on Ray Of Light.
