If you've missed the last few episodes, we decided to buy a cabin, move into it and get comfortable for the winter. It has been a LONG 4 years of self building our home and it's time we start living again. Now that it's been a few weeks, this cozy cottage is exactly what our souls needed!

How did we end up here?
It all began with a year of full-time travel, embracing the van life until the world shifted, and we had to adjust accordingly. With travel no longer an option but determined to stay productive, we transformed our compact mobile abode into a self-sufficient off-grid dwelling that fulfilled all our needs. Recognizing the uncertainty of the current tiny home, we quickly realized a permanent residence was the most sensible choice. Over the past three years, we have meticulously overseen every aspect of the project ourselves, planning the construction while simultaneously setting up the off-grid property to sustain our future food requirements. For the last two years we've lived in a Geodesic Dome, which has allowed us to be comfortable (expect for the winter months), while we realize our shipping container home dream. However, this will mark our 4th winter with stable electricity, running water, or a flushing toilet and time has come to come up with a new plan going forward.

Honestly, at this point we’re somewhere between not at all surprised and having a full breakdown😂…it just HAD to be the stair issue again, didn’t it? We laughed to ourselves when we found out and said “omg just wait until they hear about this one”...”they” being you all. How shocked are you that after all this time we’re still being with this sort of BS?! One thing we know for sure is how grateful we are that we made the decision to find a new place to live for the winter. Seeing how happy the dogs are makes all these moments of stress worth it!
Don't sweat the time it takes to get it right. Better a headache now than a nightmare scenario sometime in the future.
The husband and I have been working on our total gut house renovation for 7 years. We're glad some of the problems didn't surface for a couple of years. It saved us 10X as much work if we had been finished after a couple of years.
Yeah, we're slow, but we're over twice your age.

If it was me, with these issues, I’d be hoping for an insurance claim to an unoccupied residence. My nerves would have me committed or highly medicated, more than likely both.

Who knew that a simple set of stairs could cause so much trouble. I am glad that you have a decent contractor now.
It is great to see you both smiling again and enjoying life at the lake house with a new beach and titivated gardens.
It was a great tip off about the stone worktop place and having them do all the fitting. Are you going to put the loo on a raised pedestal so that you have to climb up to it instead of sitting with your knees around your neck lol?

There is one thing you all really need: A Lawyer.
I don't know what kind of contract you had with the container work, but I would document everything and file suit. They will probably settle or you will drive them out of business and save someone else from the heartbreak you are going through.
Unfortunately, all the contractor has to do is shut his business down and open a new one under a new name. The industry is very poorly regulated. Mike Holmes talks about this a lot. Really difficult to get the contractor to pay.
I know the Container Home is your dream, but honestly, you are living the dream at the Lake Cabin. I love seeing how relaxed and happy your family is there even through renovations.
As someone with contractors in the family...you guys have a heck of a lawsuit especially with those stairs. I'm so glad you now have someone you can fully trust.

Before you go ripping out another set of stairs you must realize, if you haven't already purchased finished flooring the top and bottom step will be 2" different in height. The top step will grow one inch and the bottom will shrink one inch once the finished flooring is installed. More so if its full dimension hardwood flooring less if its a laminate or vinyl product.

Wow, the bathroom is unfinished and it already looks 100% better. I'm so happy you finally have a competent contractor, with you for the container house. Now, at least you know what needs to be fixed and you can finally plan according to it.
Having someone you trust on your side is key to moving forward on the container house and having your lake home is key to keeping you sane and happy while you figure out the next steps. Loved seeing you relaxing on the deck at the lake house and the boys swimming in the lake.
It saddens me that there are contractors around who give less than their best. But good people are out there.
The beach, that house, it's truly a piece of heaven on earth.
When all is said and done the container house will be finished, and I am sure it will be a masterpiece! Through it all you both have learned so much and taught all of us so much. Have you ever thought of writing a book to help others build their dream container homes. Your insight would be invaluable! Loving the new vibe and pace. Looking forward to summer on the lake.

I was sitting here watching your latest post when it struck me. No matter how bad things seem, both with the place you're now in, and the container home, you've got Charlie and Eddie to put smiles on your faces and to lighten the load you two carry. Other than that, I love the color of the counter tops you chose, Tyler , for the guest bathroom, and the white for the walls Todd. While you two may not be the first to put up a container home, you are still pioneers in that regard. There will be mistakes, but you've caught them early enough that it won't cost an arm and a leg to get them fixed. Tyler, I love your attitude about that. I promise, the both of you will get through this and have some great stories when you're old and gray, like I am.
Although the video is 24+minutes I feel you showed so much of what is happening. I could watch you two for hours. It is always delightful to spend time catching up. Big hugs!
Led Zeppelin had a"Stairway to Heaven." Tyler and Todd have the stairway from hell. Love the new beach and that sink is incredible! Having a plan (and a good contractor) is half the battle, guys. No doubt in my mind that you will ultimately triumph!

It's quartz, not granite. Less porous, even without a protective coating, less in demand, so generally less expensive and less radioactive, which no one ever wants to bring up because it's so ubiquitous in our modern life.
Hi Guys, So good to see the land again. Todd did so well to not panic at the container house but as you both say, now you have a trusted expert on board you can get the problems sorted and move forward. So good to see how mobile Charlie is, he will be able to enjoy the river again this summer. I see Todd got on board with the fancy basin.
Love what you are doing with the lake cabin. The previous owners might have been colour blind, or they made the same mistake I made with my first house. I decorated each room separately without having a whole house theme. You guys clearly know what you are doing.
YES!! That's the thing, it all needs to feel cohesive. I'm a big believe in 1 type of tile, 1 countertop, 1 type of light fixture...it makes everything feel so intentional!

I so enjoy your family and your energy. So heartwarming and motivating. Watching Charlie and Eddie always makes me smile. Their excitement hearing “beach” and “swimming” brought happy tears to my
eyes. They’ve obviously been raised in a loving home. Squirrel too. She just saunters around like she is the queen of everything. Not surprising. She is a cat after all.
I nearly had a panic attack just seeing how how high and tense Todds shoulders were and the fact he was stifling tears and screams. OMG that tower contractor needs a big telling off absoulutly atrocious work.
The bathroom dresser is way too large for this small bathroom.

I bought one of the tape dispensers at the dollar store one day. I thought another dollar was wasted, NOPE! I went back and bought my family more for Christmas stocking stuffers and love love love them. I am now a tape master and now so are you!!!!! As for the wine in the bathroom....sip and Sh**

OMG you guys don´t let up for a moment, I thought when you guys travelled back home you would take a few days to chill out after all that packing up.. but have to say the bathroom will look great and your little beach is great...
I was shocked by the amount off poor workmanship on the container house, I know you try so hard to find good tradesmen, they must be in short supply but at least you have a guy that you know and trust so hopefully things will start to turn around and progress on the land now..
love the way you try to protect and support eachother and despite everything you can still laugh and keep positive although I am sure there were a few tears along the way over the past few weeks.

I’m so angry on your behalf. Engineering problems or not, do these people not own any kind of tape measure? There is no excuse for the stairs being all different heights! And to have no support under the staircase addition. It truly boggles the mind. Do you have any kind of legal recourse for negligence and shoddy workmanship? I’m honestly amazed that you’re handling this as well as you are. You two are absolute rock stars!
Listen you two don’t you dare give up on this project.To many of us believe in you,not just for ourself but cause you are doing things we wish we could do. Build that container home.

Todd, the wood in that bathroom is gorgeous. And I love the wood in your bedroom. Honestly, the wood throughout your home is beautiful. I love wood but don’t like that cabiney feel with wood everywhere. You and Tyler’s home has a nice balance between wood and painted walls. I got to give it you both, you really put the work in when doing your projects.

I can completely sympathize with you on the stair issue. My Mom's stairs in her house is a bit jacked up. I don't know how they (the builders) hid it, but when we took the carpets out to put in hardwood floors, we discovered the top step is almost a full inch taller than the rest of the stairs.
Just know that when the container house is done, it will be done the right way and you will enjoy the fruits of your labor for decades to come!
Tyler & Todd, I just want to say we love & support all that you do. I for one have been going thru alot of grief, as my Mom passed at end of 2023. When Todd was struggling after his Grandfather passed; I totally understood! Now, for the past 3wks you've posted & truthfully I cant tell you both how much that has meant to me! I love you guys & I'm so grateful yr Lake property has been ALL that you both deserve, after being on the LAND for 4 winters & no heat,running water. I'm happy to see yr update about the container home&that you have a Contractor you can fully trust! I am sad that previously yr contractors didn’t stand "true", for lack of better word. I am very sorry to hear of the water damage in the container home; I pray this Contractor can rectify the prob immediately & YES oc, I have total faith in him. I don't know how those contractors sleep at night knowing the shoddy job they did. The siding blew my mind when I first saw it. I mean, how could they look at that and think it was okay? It seems you are both dealing with these setbacks a lot better, and I bet a lot of that has to do with the fact you have a nice place to go back to and relax in. Hang in there guys!!

So amazing to see you so happy in your house - regardless of the setbacks in the container house! The countertop is amazing and that flat-sink is awesome! My dream is to have a kitchen with similar flat surface and also hidden hobs (probably induction) on the surface also, they look so awesome and futuristic.
I bet it's still a big relief to have someone you trust building your amazing home! One thing at a time, big picture is overwhelming especially for us with adhd
Ok, I feel you SO HARD on being overwhelmed by shitty trades. We didn’t even realize all the mistakes on the tiny, and we still find things and cry about it. It can absolutely CRUSH your hopes and dreams - I’m so glad you have the cabin to rest and recharge ❤ I’m can say I’m not jealous, as we live in the war zone 😂 I know we’ll both get through this!

Finally you’re back on Sunday! Not a good Sunday without some Tyler and Todd! I would be so on that “contractor !” My Sunday is complete!
I'm positive that the person that did your stairway was the double of the person who built a shed for me from a kit.
This was a simple 14x16 shed, I found so many things that were wrong, and we got into it. I called the state inspector, and they don't inspect sheds. He said he would look at it anyway. He was shocked, and he found things I didn't realize. So, with the nightmare, I ended up in court, and I lost the case due to a subpoena not being honored by the inspector.
I had a neighbor take the shed down, and thank God I told him the major issue. I came home as the rafters were being removed. The last one in the corner where the MAJOR problem had just been taken off when I came up. I was told by the person doing the demo that had he not known about the corner, he very well could have fallen and been seriously hurt or killed. What you ask was wrong? In the north west corner of this 14x16 shed that was a kit, built by a person with twenty years of experience, there was no, nails, screws, glue, staples, bolts, NOTHING HOLDING IT TOGETHER and no floor that I ask for only gravel. There was about a 10x10 section of siding holding the corner together.
Well, I hope your project is fixed and you can move on from the nightmare.
You know guys, the best thing about being a couple is how you solve problems, you support each other. and this time at the container home, you had a great builder with you , who you both trust. I could see how much more you were relaxed about things. then back with the boys, relaxed and love your beach too. We just had our bathroom remodeled and it's amazing how many things you can do with it! And really, ours was simple (ha!), just removing the tub and putting in a full standup shower. It's been more problem painting but the final product will be worth it!
