If you've missed the last few episodes, we decided to buy a cabin, move into it and get comfortable for the winter. It has been a LONG 4 years of self building our home and it's time we start living again. Now that it's been a few weeks, this cozy cottage is exactly what our souls needed!

How did we end up here?
It all began with a year of full-time travel, embracing the van life until the world shifted, and we had to adjust accordingly. With travel no longer an option but determined to stay productive, we transformed our compact mobile abode into a self-sufficient off-grid dwelling that fulfilled all our needs. Recognizing the uncertainty of the current tiny home, we quickly realized a permanent residence was the most sensible choice. Over the past three years, we have meticulously overseen every aspect of the project ourselves, planning the construction while simultaneously setting up the off-grid property to sustain our future food requirements. For the last two years we've lived in a Geodesic Dome, which has allowed us to be comfortable (expect for the winter months), while we realize our shipping container home dream. However, this will mark our 4th winter with stable electricity, running water, or a flushing toilet and time has come to come up with a new plan going forward.

I can't wait to hear what ya'll think about this renovation, we were a super nervous that it wouldn't turn out! I know there's probably going to be a lot of people who think this won't last (we were one of them) but so far so good! We'll keep you posted on how it does long term but for now we're super impressed...also, how cute were the boys during that sunset swim?? Can't wait for next Sunday 😘

The two of you never cease to amaze me. You are so resilient and determined and, no matter what comes your way, you move forward and overcome! It has been so inspiring to watch you work your magic on your RV's, the land, the dome, the container home and, now, your cabin. It's all a testament to your relationship which is also delightful to see. It's always fun to catch up on your latest projects.....And Charlie and Eddie are just a huge bonus! Squirrel, too. Oh my goodness! That bathroom floor looked just plain white until you put the stencils down! What a difference! Great idea!! In addition to carpenter, plumber, gardener, & everything else you guys get into, you can add interior designer to your resumé!
Just a tip (been painting for 40yrs.) use a broom handle on your roller and buy paint with the blue dye for the ceilings. That way you can see what you are rolling. It dries white within 30 min.
BTW it all looks really nice and updated!!

Looks awesome! I also second the suggestion of the broom handle and blue dye paint. One thing that was not said was to roll at a 35 - 45 dègree angle when using the broom handle as it makes it easier on the shoulders and neck
What is the blue dye stuff? I’m sorry I am not an expert in any way but very curious and I’ve never heard of this?
@@kathythompson9931 when you buy ceiling paint it can already have a blue pigment in it or a small packet of blue dye that makes rolling more visible as you are usually painting white over white for ceilings so the blue really helps show where you are painting. after it dries the blue fades away and leaves you with nice crisp white ceiling.
Wow painting those ceilings without even using an extension pole for the roller… absolutely savage move right there.

I was in the " path of totality," but we were also 100% overcast. With the Sun's corona, backlighting the clouds , it never got darker than twilight. On the plus side, you could stare directly at the sun for the whole 4 minutes without protective eyewear!

I'm with Todd. I thought the pattern on the tile would look cheap and tacky but it really looks great. I'm very impressed.
The very first time you let us see the cabin. The one thing stuck in my mind was the gold fixtures in that bathroom.
And, I knew they were not going to stay.
Being that you gentlemen are sensibly, frugal, I’ve been waiting for this room redo from the very beginning.
Gentlemen, you both blew my mind. What you did with the counter/ sink, the floor, the walls, and all that horrendous gold, is just spectacular.
You took that room from garish to classic .

I love how the floor came out. Adding the stencils with the brighter color made such a dramatic change and pulled everything together! Nice work!
I love how the boys go on alert, protective dogs! Some broom handles fit into the end of your roller so you can roll without hurting your neck. Love the updated bathroom!
Word of advice, use an extension pole on the roller when painting the ceiling. It’ll save the strain on your arms and neck. Using the extension pole is also mighty handy painting the walls as well, if space permits.

Todd, they make extension poles that screw into the end of your paint roller handle. It'll save your neck. You guys did an awesome job on the bathroom. The stencil made the background color magically change!

Guys. I love everything except the sink. That makes me nervous. My favourite is the tile. That looks amazing. I would have painted the vanity white - I feel that there is too much wood. But - it is a cabin. Its looks way better than before. ❤
Eclipse "my soul is darker than this" 🤭 I couldn't stop laughing , I saw total eclipse when I was 11yrs old many many years ago yeah im that old it went really dark could hardly see any sun something I doubt I'll ever witness again 🇬🇧 btw love the end results guys you worked your butt's off 😊
Ok ok 😂 in Toronto it got dark LIKE NIGHT! Not kidding, I wasn’t fussed about it all, but when the time came I was like “oh cool! It’s so dark like a REALLY heavy thunderstorm….. WELL!…. Then it got darker, and darker, and darker…. I wasn’t fussed about going out to look, but how dark it got LIKE MIDNIGHT! at 3pm was SUPER SUPER cool 😂❤😂❤
A recent lesson in the project triangle. I think it goes, Cost -> Time -> Scope determines quality. I received my bathroom Reno quote last week. I need it done a.s.a.p. and was prepared to pay. Still stung. 😂

Years ago, I had an older friend who went to the hardware store and asked where he could find the LSD. He of course meant TSP, but the salespeople never forgot him and would always smile and politely ask he needed another box of acid whenever he came in The bathroom looks great, and I had my doubts about the floor, but you nailed it. We had the full eclipse experience here in Dallas, and it definitely lived up to all the ballyhoo. The streetlights came on and my dog wanted dinner at 1:45. No sale. Glad you got to see some of it.

Your bathroom looks wonderful! The black fittings and the grey counter tops are a wonderful foil for the orangey woodwork. But the piece de resistance is the floor ... a stroke of genius! Well done! And the loo seat , beieve it or not, is quite charming. Never thought I would ever say that about a bloody LOO!! Congratulations!
WOW!! THE BATHROOM!!! That is such a huge improvement!! Honestly I didn't expect it to look so much better, but it sure does!! I always enjoy Todd's projects, the entire journey, but this time Tyler really nailed it. If watching the two of you change something so-so, into a really beautiful and functional space, doesn't inspire someone to take a 2nd look at their own space and what they might be able to do themselves (ok, the bathroom flooring, as lovely as that turned out, was a lot of work), than nothing is going to motivate them!! My son's bathroom downstairs has been a green color that matched his "forest" theme when we did it, is now just a green color that I've given up on matching with anything. TOMORROW......I'M BUYING PAINT!!

The mirror is tucked under the diagonal timber frame piece. a black frame would be awkward, IMHO.

I used that paint in my guest bathroom in December last year…and it worked really well!!! I got mine tinted…but kept it fairly light. The key is to let it fully cure.
Great job you two. You both have such a flair for decorating etc. Just look at how much you saved as well. The bathroom looks absolutely stunning! And, the spare bedroom looks so much brighter and bigger with the white paint. I was 8 yrs old when I saw the total solar eclipse in Dartmouth, Nova, Scotia. (1972) It went midnight black . The birds stopped chirping and it went super quiet. As if everyone collectively held their breath. This time NS wasn't in the perfect position to get the full affect. To see the skies go completely dark you would have had to be in Quebec or the Magdalene islands.

Hahaha another epic moment, actually two (about the eclipse). First I laughed when the dogs jumped up when they heard ‘who’s over there’?. No chemical pro house cleaner here (retired) - Dawn dishwashing liquid will clean any grease , soap scum(soap is made from oils) , etc from any surface. Easy to rinse off . Hey , if it's good enough to clean all the critters after an oil spill....

Hello, when painting, use a broom or a painter's handle. It's so much easier, especially on walls, big floors, and ceilings.
The bathroom turned out fantastic! I can't believe you got the "crack" sink! It's pretty cool but I need something bigger. lol
The last eclipse in 2017 it went totally dark. All the insects and birds went silent. It got colder by a noticeable amount . It was a memorable event.

Could not recommend it more...be prepared for a LOT of work but I think it was worth it!
Former painting contractor here. I can’t imagine painting with just the roller handle, that is excruciating for ceilings and walls always use an extension pole. You can get a 4 foot one and a 2 foot one. Having a counterbalance on the roller handle will take so much pressure off your forearms and your neck. I’m sure you’ve got more things to paint. If you don’t wanna buy a roller handle just use the handle off pushbroom that has threads on it. It is a little lightweight for ceilings, but you will feel 1000% better. Good luck, boys.
