A few years ago, after living the full-time Van Life, we put our keys in the drawer and set out on a new adventure…building a cabin in the middle of the woods. Well, a cabin WAS the plan…until we saw the cost of lumber. At that time, lumber was at an all time high so we got a wild idea to build a shipping container home instead of the cabin we planned. We’ve had a lot of wild ideas over the years but this one definitely took the cake! Join us every Sunday as we continue to create off the grid homestead vlogs, sharing our adventures as we build our own alternative lifestyle of living off the land and building a home out of shipping containers!

How did we get here?
We're Tyler and Todd and after a year of full time travel living the van life, we had to adapt when the world changed. To keep busy we’ve converted our tiny house on wheels into a fully functioning off grid home that has everything we need. Realizing that none of us know how long this new normal will stick around, we made the decision that building a home here was the best decision we could make. We've spent the last year doing EVERYTHING involved with coordinating and planning the build ourselves as well as setting up this off grid property to be able to provide us with the the food we'll need in the future. That led us to needing a place to live while we realized our dream of building a shipping container home. After lots of searching we finally discovered Geodesic Dome's and it was the perfect fit for us while we took our time with the container home.

Turning the setback with the insulators into finally being able to spend time with family was really a silver lining if I’ve ever seen one! It was so nice to be able to getaway but we were gone for 48 hours and it honestly felt like we needed a vacation from our vacation 😂…Unfortunately for us, it is still very much a tradespeople’s market right now. If, by some chance, you’re able to find someone to help with your build you really have to give up control of your schedule. We didn’t mention it in the video but if we didn’t take that rescheduled insulating appointment, we’d be waiting until SEPTEMBER! I genuinely don't mean this to come across complain-y but we want to be able to open up and real with you all on what this experience has been like. It's been a struggle lately and we're really hoping that the next few months things come together and the exterior can get wrapped up (fingers crossed for us?)

I think you hit the nail on the head...every project I'm like ugh, what is going to happen now? I know construction that always happens but I have PTSD from the stairs lol
During that conversation I was thinking of all of what they have done! This is actually their second home build. For a lot of people the dome would have been exhausting...they deserve to be tired because they have done so much. I've built a couple of homes, while living in trailers. It is fun, but there are days...

It's good that you're honest about how it feels to be sort of half way through the build. Everyone can conjure up a dream home in their head, but the process isn't for the faint of heart. And doing it under a public lens, not to mention the invisible WHOLE SECOND JOB of vlogging, burns your candles at both ends. You're doing all your fans a great service.

Seeing pup dogs in the river is just what this Texan girl with 100+ degrees weather on the horizon needed to see. I loved watching them in the escapades. Oh, and you two, haha. Everything is looking so good.

Our golden, Layla, was obsessed with fetching rocks under the water. We had never heard of another dog doing that. So funny to see Eddie's head under the water and coming up with a rock. I love watching your pups. Brings back so many wonderful memories of Layla.

Our first dog did the rock gathering thing too. We spent summers at my Uncles cabin on a lake. After many years we built a rock wall out of the rocks he had gathered. He was obsessed!
We're all so lucky to have Goldens...they really are such a joy!

We are doing an unplanned kitchen remodel and it’s maddening, it feels like I’m getting the tiniest taste of what you all have been dealing with for years!

Plumbing got moved today,
Flooring got picked out Monday and will be 3 weeks till it’s installed… no sink or countertop, ordering take out 3-5 nights a week 😭🤦♀️🤷♀️ doing dishes in the bathroom 😂

Watching Charlie and Eddie swimming brings me joy!
When I was watching this video, the thing that popped up the most for me was the love between the both of you, the silliness of the boys (Eddie and Charlie) and the friendship between you and the people working with you. I'm sure there were some frustrations but with the stress, tireness and the hot weather it is just normal. You've accomplish a lot this week and it is a step closer to your dream. Please take some time every day, even only half an hour just to do silly things of play with the babies. Take care of yourselves and stay safe. Hugs to you both and the babies💛🧡

Progress you can actually see is so rewarding, but many steps to building a home. You guys are doing it right for the long term and that's special. Everything is looking really good. Yes do take those boys to the river for a swim more often.
You two:
- Remodeled/decorated & completed your mobile home.
- Built a beautiful outdoor shower & completed it
- Same for your charming bathroom,
- Created & completed a massive working solar system.
- Dug, designed & completed a charming big garden pond.
- Built & completed your beautiful screened in “gazebo”.
- Built, decorated & completed your gorgeous dome home with water & electric.
- And, geez, built & completed with irrigation that big,
productive gorgeous vegetable & herb garden(s).
- To not forget the BIG YT following you achieved & all the filming & editing to put out your great videos,
...... And MORE ... and sooner than later your container home will also be completed & look stunning like everything you two do. Down time is needed .., you have achieved SO MUCH in the time you have been living there. Sorry for being so long winded but wanted you two to know we are ALL aware of your awesome productivity & achievement .... kick back & get some rest!

It looks like Charlie knows how to really enjoy the river. I loved the dog -cam shots as he was running to it , cuz he knows the river means fun on a hot summer day.
The river trip with the boys to let them swim looked very cool. Charlie swimming excursions, pretty smart. Eddy with his search for clams, using rocks, hilarious. Pets do like veggies. Our cats like fresh spinach and my nephew's dog like broccoli.
Patience and perseverance is the long game. Someday in the future, you'll both be sitting back on the deck, laughing about the silly details that seemed to go on and on. Have a great week.

Seeing the flopping ears shots of Charlie was just so beautiful and the two puppies playing in the water was bliss. Nature is beautiful and watching you great guys and your work ethics and ingenuity is fun but the thing I miss most was my little buddy Bill The Kid a Maltese with Attitude. A project like this is an enormous undertaking. There are going to be setbacks and oops moments. Quite honestly, you are both able to handle these so well. (I probably would be a blubbering idiot by now! 🤣). Keep up the great work!

My son and I usually watch your videos together. He wants to build a multi-level shipping container home some day. We would appreciate your take on the advantages and disadvantages of using these metal containers in a cold climate. Maybe a video someday when your lives have slowed down a bit? Sometimes this project must seem like such hard work - and then you make a big step forward and you feel encouraged! You've been working on the property, so hard, for such a long time now; you're bound to have times when you feel burnt out. You're doing marvelously! The results are beginning to show........ you've accomplished so much, and you're definitely much further forward today than you were last year!

My dudes, time is the only thing that is truly valuable. Don't squander it is my motto. Listened to a radio article years ago on "perceived lifetime". You know how summers seemed endless when young? According to the study, by 20 years old you've lived 50% of your "perceived lifetime". By 40 years of age that figure jumps to 75%. That's a good arguement for stopping to smell the flowers.
You'll get there, you really will. My only contribution would be to remind you that dogs have very short lives. Charlie and Eddie won't be with you long, in the grand scheme of things. So....don't miss time with them. Take every adventure, take every nap with them, throw every stick and rub every ear. Everything else you can make up.

I never get my videos, edited and uploaded because I’m too busy watching all of my favorite UA-camrs on Sundays.😂😂 You want to know how hot it is here in Moapa Nevada which is about 45 minutes north of Las Vegas??? It’s 119° here today.🔥🔥🔥 I can imagine how you’re getting burned out on building. But it’s going to be so worth it. We’re in the middle of searching for our dream home in Vegas. And we feel so defeated with all these crazy prices and not wanting to live in houses where everybody has the same exact house and trying to find a little bit of land that doesn’t cost $1 million dollars! Im so ready to throw my hands up in the air and give up. It’s going to be worth in the end when we finally find that perfect house.

I thought of Mamma Mia right away when I heard Slipping through our fingers. Ha!! Love the videos and the dogs are hilarious.
My home was hit by hurricane Ian sept 28, 2022 rendering it uninhabitable. We’ve been building it back living in a small trailer in our driveway until 16 days ago. I’m old, we have a beautiful golden retriever but it’s been cramped. Mostly, we’ve been brought to our knees with this build back. I’ve been sick much of the time. Sometimes I didn’t think I’d survive, but I have. Now look, you need to know that it gets easier as you put things behind you and you, too, will find yourselves in your new home. Roofs are tough. Walls , water 💦 plumbing…and electric. But THEN …it gets hopeful. And yes, I need a break. Living here taking 5 days off doing nothing . If I can do this in my 70’s, you can too ❤ I’m rooting for you, cheering for you and praying for you as well. Thank you for all your efforts.
