The idea to build a shipping container home was definitely one of the wildest ones we've had and if you've been joining our weekly videos for any amount of time you know that's saying something. Without question, it's a project that is much more difficult than we thought it would be but we're having fun along the way and that's what counts. How did we get here?
After a year of full time travel living the van life, we had to adapt when the world changed. To keep busy we’ve converted our tiny house on wheels into a fully functioning off grid home that has everything we need. Realizing that none of us know how long this new normal will stick around, we made the decision that building a home here was the best decision we could make. We've spent the last year doing EVERYTHING involved with coordinating and planning the build ourselves as well as setting up this off grid property to be able to provide us with the the food we'll need in the future. That led us to needing a place to live while we realized our dream of building a shipping container home. After lots of searching we finally discovered Geodesic Dome's and it was the perfect fit for us while we took our time with the container home.

An incredible amount of work but dreaming about how tasty all the apple pies, crisps, and cherry tarts are going to be was enough to keep us going...it's been a really enjoyable few weeks focusing on the projects that we're really wanting to work on. Todd has been talking about doing this for YEARS and I can't believe we finally have our very own orchard!!! P.S. Having planted over 30 trees these past few years, I've learned one thing: you have to water new transplants in. The first couple of weeks, it's watering every day. Because you're doing a fall planting, you might seek some advice for frequency and amount of water. I've had great success with fall plantings (cedar and spruce trees), and consistent watering those first two weeks was key to my success. Best wishes to you both as you anticipate fruit gathering in your future.
So, we planted a 6 gallon cherry blossom last season, did all that watering daily, and it lost one branch this season but seems rather unhappy. No blossoms but we kept the leaves alive. Any suggestion? I swear, upstate NY, near the finger lakes too, has the worst soil. At least our home's acreage. Every hydrangea we tried died. We do, however, have some nice volunteer white birch doing nicely.

Long, slow waterings versus lots of short frequent waterings will promote strong, healthy root development.
Keep adding compost to your soil to slowly amend it. Compost is the miracle additive. If your soil is too sandy and drains to quickly it will retain moisture. If your soil is to clay (as mine is) and drains to slowly, it will help the soil drain better. Use composted organic materials to top dress every season and it will change your soil for the better.@@lynnees9828
I like planting in the fall, less time to water and less stress on new plantings during the heat of summer.
"Planting a tree is planning for the future" as my grandmother used to say. Every time one of us grandchildren bought a house with a yard, she brought a tree to plant for the housewarming gift. You've planted the future you a nice gift. 💝
Important abt Woodchips! Do not put the chips right against the bark of trees, rake away from the tree at least a foot away around, otherwise the chips will rot the new bark at the bottom of the tree and create "girdeling affect" and then the tree will die, because it won't be able to send water and nutrients up to the tree because the tree bark will be broken.❤❤❤ I can't wait to see all the deer on your property!!! May want to do a nice fence around❤

You should get a beehive next spring. Great for pollination, honey to make meade, and they are so interesting to learn about!
One of them are allergic to bee so it is not possible.
Right after my parents moved into our house they planted a pear tree, an apple tree, a cherry tree, a damson plum tree and 2 peach trees. Also a huge strawberry patch, 2 kinds of grapes, a dewberry bush,a red raspberry bush, and black raspberry bush.

So excited for you guys! Some orchard tips -- (I'm sure you guys probably already did a mountain of research but just in case!): Make sure to prune your fruit trees in late February or March every year! It's important to get fruit trees branching the right way while they're still young, and once they are older, the pruning will help increase fruit size. The best tree form for fruit trees is short, wide, open topped trees. It's important for maximizing light penetration into the tree canopy, and thus, your fruit harvest as well. At the same time, keeping those trees low will also make it much easier to pick all your fruit during harvest! Picking all the fruit as soon as possible will also boost your harvest for the following season (strange I know. It has to do with the hormones released back into the tree buds by developed fruit seeds which signal to the tree that it successfully reproduced and won't need to reproduce, aka create fruit, as much next year). Anyways, hope this helps :)

I live in fruit orchard country (rural Washington state) and have never seen wood chips, only grass or dirt. But our orchards are thousands of acres, so maybe that's why. Your orchard will be beautiful, especially when the trees have their first bloom. Also--be careful when you light that huge pile of brush. You could scorch your tender new trees.

If you have deer, I would recommend a protective fence around each of your young trees. It's not permanent, just a year or two. 6' field fencing (2x4 rectangles) with 1 T-post to anchor it to, 3'-4' diameter circle of fencing is small enough they can't jump in!
I've done this with my orchards & not lost a tree yet.
Once the trees are larger, some predation of lower branches wont be too harmful to them, and the protective fencing won't be necessary.

You guys really step things up a notch when you do a project! Once the trees get established, it will be a wonderful orchard! The wood chips most definitely the best choice. Grass would be pretty, but very labor intensive trying to keep it looking that way.
I’m recently finding that doing certain projects around my place has become more enjoyable due to how you guys approach your projects. Can’t wait to see what’s next! ❤❤
“The biggest mistake people make planting fruit trees is to plant them too deep. Make sure you plant them on top of a mound”. The guys proceed to plant them in nice deep troughs. I hope they’re okay, or that it was just a bad shot.
When I'm in my garden, I'm reminded that, "We learn from our gardens to deal with the most urgent question of the time, How much is enough?”
Not all fruit trees need a different pollinator. Some trees, like cherries are self pollinating. You should strip most of the fruit on their first year as it stresses the tree if they have too much fruit and the weight of the fruit can break the branches as they are still slim and need to get stronger. Small fruit like cherries are ok though.
Or you can thin the fruit and leave a few……..from California central valley , land of fruit and nut trees for most of the nation. Living here 66 years you learn things. Lol. Love you allways , Hygirl

I just want to make sure you’re being safe. I used to work in a lot of restaurants please don’t shovel ice cubes with a glass because if a piece of your class breaks off you’ll never find the chip glass in the ice so if you could please purchase metal or heavy plastic ice shovel Love your videos.✨
or they could just keep a plastic cup in the ice drawer for that same purpose
My husband and I planted a mini orchard when we moved into our house. We’ve been here almost 5 years and we finally got fruit this year! we have plums, apples, and pears. The plums we get are so sweet they are like candy!
Guys, don't forget to water these new trees regularly. Without sufficient water they will take ages to establish. Best of luck xx

Not sure if it's possible, but could you get a wood chipper and turn a lot of the wood debris into mulch for the trees and garden to replenish what you had delivered??😊

I was going to say this too, That pile would make great wood chips for everywhere on their land - paths, new gardens, etc. Chipping that pile would be a much better (and safer?) use of found material. Why waste is with a risky bigger burn?
Just a tip to pass along. Make sure you have fine mesh guards (such as hardware cloth) around the bottom portions of the trees. This winter, when you have lots of snow, mice will be tunneling through that snow but will not be able to get to your tree trucks. Because that bark is very tender right now and very tasty to them. Also have it extend a few inches above the snow line, so that rabbits also don’t nibble on your trees. Your Orchard is looking absolutely lovely with those hemlock chips!
When I lived in Vermont, I ran into the same issues: mice and voles tunneling under the snow and in Spring so many trees were ringed they never grew back.
My solution was cheaper and lazier than the wire mesh guards: Bag Balm, the ubiquitous fix-all every country dweller keeps on hand (along with Duct Tape). Bag Balm is smelly, natural, water proof, and at least in New England, easily found.
In the autumn, I smeared the tree trunks with Bag Balm extending from soil line upwards about 18". Any left on my hands worked in well as a hand cream. Seriously, best applicator is an un-gloved hand.
No damage after that. I mean, what rodent would want a mouthful of that?

The wood chips was an excellent suggestion for so many reasons. You can also add fresh chips year after year or every 2-3 years. Builds nutrition into the soil, looks attractive and walking on it is nice and cushioneeee. lol You guys are fun to watch and building such a nice place for yourselves.
Keeping a garden journal is great and you can add a drawing of hte trees with their names as things happen to markers but your garden journal is a living journal of your planting life and cycles etc that work in your environment.
The hard work you guys do is amazing. I could be a supervisor. I'm really good at standing and staring. Maybe even pointing. Thanks for sharing your journey!💗💗

HInt: put down landscaping cloth prior to wood chips. The chips will degrade over time and eventually will promote weeds/grass, but with the landscaping cloth the time it takes to degrade into soil nearly triples and makes easy work when replacing the chips. Just something I learned in my 68 years of gardening.
In 5 years they will wish they put 30 y fabric down. Lol.
I have wood chips throughout my whole yard, no cloth, but I just keep adding chips every year or so. I learned from the previous owners that all the plastic and cloth they put down just gets covered by blown in dirt. 10 inches down I still find plastic. Adding chips every year or two has worked wonderfully with the bonus of being able to dig up composted soil when I need it.

Hi Tyler and Todd! Love your videos! Advice from personal orchard experience…. Pull the chips away from the base so you have room to add fertilizer and compost. You’ll need both treatments to the soil throughout the year at specific times to get fruit.

This is great. My mouth is watering thinking of all the fruit you will have from those trees. BTW, I once put down wood chips in my yard. It didn’t last because the cats in the area (I live in the city) used it in place of their kitty litter! You only have one cat, and you have plenty of soil she can dig in, so you probably won’t have the same problem. Something to think about, though.
I’m always amazed about all you guys accomplish…but I must say I’m crazy impressed by the guy who dumped the wood chips!

I wish I had you two for just one day. My yard and plants are decimated from the long long unbearably hot summer in south Texas. I know you could rejuvenate it in a blink of an eye. I’m amazed at your creativity and enthusiasm in all you do. Well done!
