He practically invented "sweep" picking. He perfected it for sure. He is so clean and so musical with his sweep choices, unlike a lot of other guitarists who used it after him. Also, I am kind of with you about straight jazz guitar, but Wes Montgomery and Pat Martino, especially Pat's East album, are really great to me.
I'm not sure if he invented sweep picking - but I recall watching a video of him on economy picking when I was younger. He definitely popularised this school of picking.
Gambale with the Chick Corea fusion group for many years ...plenty I'm shred with phenomenal ensembles (Weckl drums , Vinnie Colaiuta , Gary Novak & John Patatucci bass ) .
He rarely plays clean tone, almost always plays with a high gain setting. But, yeah it's Frank Freaking Gambale. As other commenters have pointed out, check out Truth In Shredding with Holdsworth. I also love Thunder From Down Under and Passages, Live!, A Present for the Future definitely worth checking out.
Check out "show me what you can do" album and all his stuff with Smith and Hamm: there you'll find top notch fusion shredding. You can find also an incredible live performance from that era on the tube.
@@ACMusic the tune called Astral Traveller by Gambale/Hamm/Smith or plain GHS really freaks me out. Check it out on UA-cam, you won´t regret it. Thanks for your shared discoveries here, Anthony.
I still have that reaction when I hear him! He is SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO AMAZING! Been a huge influence in my playing since the 90's.... If you haven't heard Scott Henderson, you need too ;)
Frank's music tends to be cheesy, bordering on smooth jazz, but his playing is always on point. Never had the best distorted tone, although I do like that dark bridge humbucker sound of his '80s live work (Ibanez, mostly), and it's not gotten better in recent years. Still, the playing always makes up for any other shortcomings. Me, I love his instructional work. There's a big clinic from the late '80s on UA-cam, where he does great lessons on modes, which was also turned into a video ("Modes No More Mystery"). His video on economy picking ("Monster Licks and Speed Picking") is a classic, and the final solo, "The Lick That Slurped L.A.", is one of the ultimate economy picking workouts. Great books, too, "The Frank Gambale Technique Book" is a splendid theory resource. I'm not super into his studio albums, but his 1988 live album is a classic (check out "Credit Reference Blues" for some ripping improv), and the albums The Great Explorers and Passages are more rock than light fusion. Here's a short medley of song snippets from his solo career: ua-cam.com/video/qIVFJdmQ9Xk/v-deo.html He's also worked with Chick Corea, replacing Scott Henderson in the Elektric Band, and has done loads of other stuff. In fact, listen to "Rocks" from the album Truth in Shredding, to hear Frank and Allan Holdsworth blow your mind on this Brecker Bros. classic.
It does? Man, for the first decades of his career he was playing solid body electrics all over the place shredding like a bastard. I've seen him twice with Vital Information, and he played his ass off with dirt all over the place. It's more recently that I've seen him playing hollow jazz boxes and doing this sort of thing.
That '88 live album was my first exposure to him. I had never heard such ridiculous sweep picking like that before (or really since lol)! But yeah, I tend to prefer his live albums more than his studio work.
I love having such knowledgeable subs! I learn so much! I really need to see his instructional stuff, especially since my economy picking is not my strongest area!! Thanks!! 👍👍👍😁😁
Anthony Couch Check out Swybryd Picking by Marshall Harrison, he also transcribes music for guitar from composers such a Rachmaninoff, Alkin, Paganini and tons of other composers with names that are really hard to spell !! His live streams as fun ;●) Hampshire
This is such a trip lol My favorite thing about your videos is when you guess the improv. Frank brings such entertainment and life to music and performance.
Ah yes, I remember learning about this guy recently too. I watched his Sweep Harmonics video. His tone and note choices reminded me of Chris Poland (at least on that video).
Album is called "Truth in shredding", check out the songs: "not ethiopia" and "new boots" from it, amazing stuff, their styles and tones are so different that they complement eachother beautifully.
Also there is an album with the most amazing, craziest guitar shredding ever that is called "Centrifugal funk", its Shawn Lane, Brett Garsed and Frank Gambale, i listen to fusion for more than 20 years now and i have never heard anything like this, for example the great tune from this album: "hey tee bone". To this day it blows my mind, just orgasmic soloing (@_@)
I agree Lucas, Truth in Shredding is my top 1 favorite fusion album for many good reasons. I just can't Believe Anthony never heard Frank Gambale's name before. I suspect a kind of lessons & album marketing, but it's fair. Always good to grab some guitar legends Gambale, Holdsworth and put them in front of the UA-cam stage. Did you make a video 1st time listening to Allan Holdsworth with, let's say Spokes (synthaxe) or Peril Premonition? These guys changed music, not only guitar, and they have to be studied for sure. Peace
@@ACMusic I came here just to say the same: the album with Gambale and Holdsworth. But my favorite from FG is "Live!". AH has so many great records. You can see there is some AH influence in FG too.
Hey man! Nice video. I've been listening to these last months to gambale and I learned many licks from him. I learn some chromatic right notes in jazz progression and (what I called) Short arpeggios (Parts of arpeggios that makes a large sound). Anyway you MUST listen his work with Allan Holdsworth on Mark Varneys Proyect(MVP) It's called Truth on Shredding and the amazing job with chick corea in the disc In the Eye of the Beholder. Check his video on the blue note about Got a match? with the electrick band too. Just amazing and I love his nasal Tone.
I was lucky enough to meet FG in the late 80s in a London guitar clinic thingy. He was super enthusiastic and was just starting to promote his Techniques and ideas to to with pickslanting etcetera. I chatted to him afterwards and he was very friendly and signed the handout thing he gave out. Check out as much if his stuff as possible, you will be surprised at how useful it is, I suggest actually starting with his earlier videos from late 80s and the nineties as he explains his ideas in detail. He definitely influenced my "playing mechanics" , him , along with Marshall Harrison's right hand ideas are 2 of the best guys to study for efficient ways to traverse the fretboard. Cheers. ;~)
First time I've heard him play like this. I remember him from the heyday of the fusion, playing a solid body electric, and shredding..sweep picking and doing his share of face-melting all with a distorted tone ala Mahavishnu-like stuff. I think he's also played with Chick Corea...but who hasn't right?
Look at these jazz guitarists for your reaction videos: Julian Lage, Kurt Rosenwinckel, Tim Miller, John Scofield, Matteo Mancuso. If you are a rock guitar fan, I would recommend look at Nick Reinhardt, guitarist of the math-rock/noise rock band Tera Melos (to me, the most interesting rock guitarist nowadays). Greetings from Bogotá, Colombia. Great channel and video.
PS: since you love (some) jazz, check out these guys (at least for your own indulgence): ua-cam.com/video/yKjICNdWamk/v-deo.html Pats music has accompanied my life for a long time. he is special. thank you for your passionate and genuine reaction.
Check out FB performing his older tune “ 6 / 8 Shaker” It’s a fusion masterpiece with funk and the right amount of edge that makes it more interesting to me. I think you’ll like it.
Never been a big fan of Frank, but there is no denying he’s a world class musician. After listening to this I think maybe my taste has changed and I want to hear more of Frank. You should give a listen to Eric Johnson , Cliffs of Dover.
Frank Gambale's 1987 album "Live" is probably his most horn-like and incendiary playing. Here's a link to one of the tracks ua-cam.com/video/SC8G02rIRIs/v-deo.html I think you would really like that one.
It is amazing how Frank continues with his amazing technique Do you guys know what happened with Mark Whitfield? He used to have an amazing technique and today he plays with a horrible technique? I started listening to Mark when I was probably 14 now I am 41 and today in the years of the internet, I thought I will have some nice concerts and see how the guy plays but unfortunately today he does not sound good as in his early years.
Guitar nut since the 80s,sick to death of shred, really tried hard to get into jazz and fusion but while i know that these guys are monster players, so much of it just sounds like well played elevator music.

Frank's concert at the Musician's Institute is a good place to see what he's all about - ua-cam.com/video/vx_wiyQmzDY/v-deo.html
Frank does clean and distorted. He kind of started the whole economy picking thing and as you already witnessed takes no prisoners when sweeping either. Check out this showcase: ua-cam.com/video/qIVFJdmQ9Xk/v-deo.html As I'm into heavy metal and hard rock more than into fusion, I lament him playing the style that he does but even.then is he on my.shortlist of favourite guitarists ever. Well done this vid!
This was not the best illustration of what Frank can do, both compositionally and instrumentally. It sounded like a piece of West Coast light, commercial jazz. For the full Gambale effect, find the recording entitled The Mark Varney Project (the first of the three this producer, Varney, published in his name) and listen to "Humpty Dumpty by Chick Corea and "New Boots" by Gambale. Both feature Holdsworth as well since Allan had a lot of respect for Frank's blazing technique and musicianship.
This is honestly my first time hearing him as well.... Those sweeps are inspiring. All in all, I don't understand why people enjoy Jazz. To me the whole genre is just a fantastic musical exercise and nothing else. I do have to say though, I'm blown away by his talent, but I just don't see myself putting on his record to listen to.
You should check ALL his work. Gambale is not just one of the, or maybe the best jazz/fusion guitarists in the world, but the amazing melodies and songs he wrote are just incomprehensable. Like this song, check it out. ua-cam.com/video/Cc4dJsJE2no/v-deo.html

For a great, hip, modern jazz guitarist with out of this world playing, check out Kurt Rosenwinkel. You can thank me later.
If you play guitar and you haven't listened about Frank Gambale then you haven't listened none good guitarist.
I think the guitar is a Gibson Barney Kessell.
Gibson Trini Lopez
Really? He is choosing the right notes?
Try Joe Pass
gambale the legend, everyone raved about malmsteen when hes just a overrated hack compared to frank. but his style of music isnt everyones cup of tea. I really enjoy his phrasing.
A little lesser known guitarist from a similar period from australia is Brett Garsed, who is more legato -- if you ever listen to 'Your the Voice' by John Farnham, he is ripping a barely audible guitar solo with sweeps and everything at the end.
Plenty of shred ...should read .
jesus man
really?
what DO you listen too?
