    He practically invented "sweep" picking. He perfected it for sure. He is so clean and so musical with his sweep choices, unlike a lot of other guitarists who used it after him. Also, I am kind of with you about straight jazz guitar, but Wes Montgomery and Pat Martino, especially Pat's East album, are really great to me.

      I'm not sure if he invented sweep picking - but I recall watching a video of him on economy picking when I was younger.
      He definitely popularised this school of picking.

    He rarely plays clean tone, almost always plays with a high gain setting. But, yeah it's Frank Freaking Gambale. As other commenters have pointed out, check out Truth In Shredding with Holdsworth. I also love Thunder From Down Under and Passages, Live!, A Present for the Future definitely worth checking out.

  • @YngtchieMusic

    Frank's music tends to be cheesy, bordering on smooth jazz, but his playing is always on point. Never had the best distorted tone, although I do like that dark bridge humbucker sound of his '80s live work (Ibanez, mostly), and it's not gotten better in recent years. Still, the playing always makes up for any other shortcomings.
    Me, I love his instructional work. There's a big clinic from the late '80s on UA-cam, where he does great lessons on modes, which was also turned into a video ("Modes No More Mystery"). His video on economy picking ("Monster Licks and Speed Picking") is a classic, and the final solo, "The Lick That Slurped L.A.", is one of the ultimate economy picking workouts. Great books, too, "The Frank Gambale Technique Book" is a splendid theory resource.
    I'm not super into his studio albums, but his 1988 live album is a classic (check out "Credit Reference Blues" for some ripping improv), and the albums The Great Explorers and Passages are more rock than light fusion. Here's a short medley of song snippets from his solo career: ua-cam.com/video/qIVFJdmQ9Xk/v-deo.html
    He's also worked with Chick Corea, replacing Scott Henderson in the Elektric Band, and has done loads of other stuff. In fact, listen to "Rocks" from the album Truth in Shredding, to hear Frank and Allan Holdsworth blow your mind on this Brecker Bros. classic.

    • @Wizardofgosz
      @Wizardofgosz 6 років тому +4

      It does? Man, for the first decades of his career he was playing solid body electrics all over the place shredding like a bastard. I've seen him twice with Vital Information, and he played his ass off with dirt all over the place. It's more recently that I've seen him playing hollow jazz boxes and doing this sort of thing.

      That '88 live album was my first exposure to him. I had never heard such ridiculous sweep picking like that before (or really since lol)! But yeah, I tend to prefer his live albums more than his studio work.

      I agree Lucas, Truth in Shredding is my top 1 favorite fusion album for many good reasons. I just can't Believe Anthony never heard Frank Gambale's name before. I suspect a kind of lessons & album marketing, but it's fair. Always good to grab some guitar legends Gambale, Holdsworth and put them in front of the UA-cam stage. Did you make a video 1st time listening to Allan Holdsworth with, let's say Spokes (synthaxe) or Peril Premonition? These guys changed music, not only guitar, and they have to be studied for sure. I've been listening to these last months to gambale and I learned many licks from him. I learn some chromatic right notes in jazz progression and (what I called) Short arpeggios (Parts of arpeggios that makes a large sound). Anyway you MUST listen his work with Allan Holdsworth on Mark Varneys Proyect(MVP) It's called Truth on Shredding and the amazing job with chick corea in the disc In the Eye of the Beholder. Check his video on the blue note about Got a match? with the electrick band too. Just amazing and I love his nasal Tone.

    I was lucky enough to meet FG in the late 80s in a London guitar clinic thingy. He was super enthusiastic and was just starting to promote his Techniques and ideas to to with pickslanting etcetera. I chatted to him afterwards and he was very friendly and signed the handout thing he gave out.
    Check out as much if his stuff as possible, you will be surprised at how useful it is, I suggest actually starting with his earlier videos from late 80s and the nineties as he explains his ideas in detail. He definitely influenced my "playing mechanics" ,
    him , along with Marshall Harrison's right hand ideas are 2 of the best guys to study for efficient ways to traverse the fretboard.
    Cheers. ;~)

I remember him from the heyday of the fusion, playing a solid body electric, and shredding..sweep picking and doing his share of face-melting all with a distorted tone ala Mahavishnu-like stuff. I think he's also played with Chick Corea...but who hasn't right?

    This was not the best illustration of what Frank can do, both compositionally and instrumentally. It sounded like a piece of West Coast light, commercial jazz. For the full Gambale effect, find the recording entitled The Mark Varney Project (the first of the three this producer, Varney, published in his name) and listen to "Humpty Dumpty by Chick Corea and "New Boots" by Gambale. Both feature Holdsworth as well since Allan had a lot of respect for Frank's blazing technique and musicianship.
