GAMBALE TUNING EXPLAINED
“Firstly, it’s called “GAMBALE TUNING” :o).
The open strings are the same pitch as a 5th fret capo with strings 1 & 2 an octave lower.
6 - A ( same as regular 5th string but it now the lowest string (6th).
5 - D ( same as regular 4th string but it now the 5th string.
4 - G ( same as regular 3rd string but it now the 4th string.
3 - C ( same as regular 2nd string but it now the 3rd string tuned up a half step.
2 - E ( same pitch as 2nd fret on a D string in standard tuning. It’s a wound D string from a lighter gauge set tuned up a whole step D to E )
1 - A ( same pitch as 2nd fret on a G string in standard tuning. It’s a wound G string from a lighter gauge set tuned up a whole step G to A )
There’s transcriptions on my website available for songs from the album Raison D’Etre recorded in 2004 where I first introduced this GAMBALE TUNING invention.
The song I played on Rick Beato’s interview was called “Table For One” from Raison D’Etre.
The Gambale Tuning allows you to be able to be comfortable and play with it right away without thinking because it’s essentially a modified standard tuning, but because two pitches are an octave lower, it open up endless new voicings that were previously only possible on keyboard. It’s VERY liberating!.
Suggested strings;
Use strings from two different gauge sets, for example, Light and Extra Light gauge sets as follows;
6th - A string from Light gauge set
5th - D string from Light gauge set
4th - G string from Light gauge set
3rd - B string from Light gauge set tuned up a half step
2nd - D string from Extra Light gauge set tuned up a whole step
1st - G string from Extra Light gauge set tuned up a whole step
Enjoy,
FG
Guys, so the tuning is:
6th string = A ( usually the 5th string )
5th string = D ( usually the 4th string )
4th string = G ( usually the 3rd string )
3rd string = C ( usually the 2nd string but up a half step )
2nd string = E ( same pitch as 2nd fret on a D string on a regularly tuned guitar )
1st string = A ( same pitch as 2nd fret on a G string on a regularly tuned guitar )
Thanks Frank!! Amazing tuning!
Can this tuning be done on a nylon string Classical??
Am I missing something here? Because it's pretty much like a capo on the 5th fret...
Oh, wait... So after a more attentive look I got the point of this tuning!
@@MisterA1002 Yes. You need two string sets to do it though. Essentially, you don't use the low E and high E of the first set. You switch the remaining strings up and tune them as if you had a capo on the 5th fret in a regular strung guitar. Then, you take the D and G strings from another set and put them where the B and high E would be and tune then one step up.
@@viniciusbertucci The same, but way different ... : )
This man is an absolute beast of a musician … spent a weekend at a master class … utterly amazing player
I wrote this poem during listening to your tune frank. Beautiful tune :)
Table for one.
He sat alone at his table,
Mesmerised and unable,
The candle lite room,
Filled the vacuum,
His heart skipped a beat
as his eyes met her,
He held her hand,
Words not uttered or exchanged,
They danced to the flutter of light,
Illuminated by the orchestra,
Lost in each other's gaze,
Her heart lost in an emotional maze,
Slipped from his pocket a ring,
Knelt on one leg and showed her the bling,
Rosy cheeks, their audience held their breath,
Anticipation held she wept,
She shook her head not in discord,
With excitement, yes! Yes! she roared,
As they resumed the floor,
Seized a perfect moment as their waiter entered the room door,
Though thirty years went by so fast,
When their eyes met across a room love held it's grasp,
Who can say when or why,
Together forever until either die,
Though he is not long gone,
Fond memories feel forlorn,
Scented flowers fill the air,
An aroma so fair,
Table for one,
The emptiness is never fun,
Tears fall like a roaring ocean,
Our hearts are lost in emotion.

First stanza was all you needed...😊
Just sent this to a buddy of mine that is having trouble writing right now...I have a feeling he will be sending me 2 new songs before midnight. Thanks Frank!
I first saw Frank Gambale over 25 years ago with Chick Corea. I thought he was a restless innovator at the time. Glad to see that he hasn't changed, at least as far as being an innovator....... Innovation being the essence of change, or maybe it's the other way around.
I dont mean to be so off topic but does someone know of a tool to log back into an Instagram account??
I was dumb forgot the login password. I would love any help you can give me
@Skyler Beau instablaster =)

*FOR ME ONE OF THE MOST BRILLIANT MUSICIAN IN THIS WORD, HE COME FROM ANOTHER GALAXY*
Frank, you are awesome, sweep picking, & Gambale tuning, and your skill, technical knowledge, creativity beyond, and most of all , - what comes from the guitar when you play.
All the best to you. You make the world a better place, you contribute living , emotions, from your music.
I have never been into alt tunings for the reasons stated and re-entrant tunings even more so. But this allows tone clusters to be played on guitar, amazing!
This is basically Nashville Tuning transposed Down a Perfect fifth
"what ive found is that all the cool shi..." HAHAHAHAHAA go Frank! :D
+mphillips0052 ........"SHAPES"..........not what you're thinking.....
Such beautiful harmonization my god
One of the best things that ever happened to me.. I can do a lot of the Bill Evans/ Tyner stuff, plus early 70s Carole King/ Rundgren style stuff.. Really beautiful, like a whole new instrument! THANK YOU, Frank!!! Ear Candy. If you have a spare guitar sitting around - try it!
I have fifty spare guitares. I'm gonna go nuts with tunings now.
OMG, as a pianist as well as a guitarist, I feel this tuning is brilliant. I am definitely going to try it.
Wonderful Musician
Awesome! Thanks for explaining/demonstrating this. Great idea. Can't wait to try it.
Mr Gambale , in Japanese gambare/gambale , it means Do your best .
It suits you well .
Yet more astounding sounds from Frank Gambale!
This is my favorite song.Thank you Frank!
Superb...thanks for sharing Frank!

Awesome, thanks for sharing! I always heard about this tuning and wondered how it worked. It's brilliant, very inspiring!
Amazing! Can't belive I never heard about it before. Frank Gambale always humble and stunning musician
Simply amazing how amazingly simple it seems
I am definitely re-tuning one of my guitars to this.. Thanks for tabbing out the songs as well. that should get people started using this brilliant tuning..
Great idea! Great musicality comes out of this out of the box thinking! Definitely worth checking out, the great Frank Gambale!
Merci beaucoup Mr GAMBALE de nous avoir fait partager cet accordage, très inspirant.
OMG this composition is so f***in' hypnotizing...
Qué bonito Frank! Se escuchan maravillosas esas armonías. Gracias por compartir 👍🏿🇲🇽
Frank looks great here. He's lost a lot of weight. And, of course, more importantly, he shows once again why he is one of the world's greatest guitarists.
Pra mim o melhor do mundo em musicalidade técnica e teorias esse cara é monstro.
Amazing how dropping two strings an octave changes the whole sound !
Es como abrir una caja musical ... Bella obra
Beautiful tune, Frank.
Frank... you are off your head mate. Oh well, I'll give it a go seeing as it's raining. Ha Ha!! Love it!! Now all the '4 note standard, closed, jazz chords' I know sound brilliant. Just need a doubleneck now so that I can put both tunings on one instrument. Inspired!!!!
This is amazing stuff Frank. Great seeing you at MI today. Always a pleasure and your vacation chops are still better than anyone else's regular chops haha :D
Thanks for sharing! It's really nice!
Franco, you're always the Best! This tuning, in the way you're using it, reminds me the difference between a standard keyboard player chords and Tony Banks's ones... Thank you for your great support to guitar player's world!
Oh my! Clusters available finally. Guess I need to dedicate one guitar just for that. Thank you, Frank!
Always a pioneer
Frank Gambale é genial.....
Wonderful.
Thank you Sir Frank..!!
wow i always wondered what that song was...heard it live and loved it
Impressive and beautiful
Amazing, you make it sound so simple, but I'm convinced you're from a different planet ;-)
Thanks Frank for this fantastic video, and for that amazing innovative idea of yours which brings oneself to another dimension in guitar composition.
All the best!
Ruben
+rubendiazguitar I agree, Maestro! :) It reminds me of the amazing stuff you played on a left-handed guitar. I'm tempted to try this with nylon strings, but I'd be too worried about freaking out the guitar neck. I could almost see buying a guitar just for this tuning, and then I'd be back to steel strings for the first time in years. :)
have you experimented with this tuning on flamenco guitar maestro? is it simikar too flamenco Rondeña tuning
Ruben Diaz Flamenco Guitar Saludos maestro
At 6.30, after monster ultra-sonic arpeggio: "Just different, you know!"
wow, awesome idea!!!!
It's kind of like a Tres Cubano but in a different way: But so many different options and opportunities. Thank you for posting ...

Awesome!
6:54 "It's just different, ya know?" "Yeah, amazing" LOL
Very interesting tuning! Would love to hear a jazz standard chord melody for comparison.
thank you frank
Is that a CPX900 Yamaha beautiful music. What a inspiring way to live through music.
oh Gambale, you've done it again!
A GENIUS!!!!
That's a Musician...Frank🔥❤🎸
tremendo!!!
Been a fan of frank for35 years
Hi Frank, you may not need to learn new fingerings with this ingenious tuning, but it does turn the guitar into a transposing instrument, so there is that. If you are looking at, say, A on a lead sheet you've got to play an E, so there are some mental gymnastics involved. (Dont get me wrong. Big fan here. You're a MONSTER!)
Gambale learns his songs in two keys on his double neck. Gavin thank you for your comment. Show your support for Frank and Subscribe and Share this awesome video. Thank you. FG Admin
beautiful playing !
Brilliant. Love your playing and interpretations. Would you mind telling me the gauges you're using per string to make this kind of tuning possible? Who is supplying your strings?
Genius!
6 un poeta Franck!
FrankGambaleTV If the lowest 4 strings are A, D, G, C..... that's a 4th above regular tuning, not a 5th. A 5th above would leave the lowest string tuned to B. Just wanted to make that clear... I'm sure it was just an oversight or slip of the tongue by Frank Gambale. Great tuning idea which I will definitely give a try. Nashville tuning is nice as a 2nd guitar to sparkle things up (a little like a manual chorus...). Whereas the Gambale tuning can be used as the 1st guitar, or even the only guitar. I'm anxious to try this out with a female vocalist I've been playing with. Close voicings here we come! :0)
Wonderful. Love it
I am curious as to what gauge strings to use if raising to an A? Use an a string as the E string???? a g string for the B????
Met Frank at two of his shows, (Chick Corea and Vital Information) fabulous musician and extremely nice guy.
So this is basically Nashville tuning down a perfect 5th... Very nice. I was using a tuning ripped off from Pat Metheney's recent acoustic albums dropping the 6, 5, 2 and 1 strings down a whole step, then replacing the 4 and 3 with gauges to tune them up an octave, so you still get a "bass section, with the middle strings up and octave...not sure that all made sense. So the tuning would be standard down a whole step, middle strings up an octave.
Doug Dunbar Very interesting, Doug. I enjoy Pat's stuff with that. HIs approach gets a beautiful deep bass In contrast to the Frank tuning. I'll have to admit, though, that Frank's idea is easier to get my head around. :)
+Doug Dunbar - I'm not clear about the 4th & 3rd strings... I understand you put lighter strings, but is it tuned an octave above concert pitch or are they also transposed down a full tone then up an octave. IOW are they D & G or
C & F? Thanks (if you get to read this).
geniale
thats amazing how he re-wrote the intro to Hotel California in a different tuning!
What a talented musician. I would be interested in knowing what is the ideal gauge for each of these strings.
@@FrankGambaleTV Excellent! Thank you!
Light and extra light strings sound bad for me id just use normal 0.10+
respect
Pure Genius
Clever boy
Now I need to buy another acoustic and try this. I see many "AH HA" moments in my future. :)
I wish i someday was at least half talented and skilled as Frank is :3
just practice all day everyday and you will get closer and closer
Bartosz Baz0k Zelek stop wishing and start practicing. you will come into your own!
It is not clear because he did not simply played the open strings but as far as I understood it goes like (bottom up): ADGCEA.
Is that right?
Badass!!!! ;)
Wow! It's not amazing...it deserves another word. And "table for one" is really really beautiful, fantastic....
So the tuning would be: A D G C E A?
Although there is no economic picking, the video is absolutely amazing
I think I understand this - except for the last 2 strings -
6th would be the A string
5th would be the D string
4th would be the G string
3rd would be the B string tuned to C?
2nd - Is this what would be the big E string tuned to E?
1st - What happens here? A?
So does this tuning take 2 "A" strings? Since the low E is the last one left - it can't be tuned a 5th up.
6th- A2
5th- D2
4th- G3
3th- C4
2th- E3
1th- A3
Ok do I tune my 6th string UP to A ? That sounds extreme.
Or restring to put the A string as the sixth string?
Who does this affect the tension on the neck? Does the guitar need any alteration?
Have you changed the string gauges for that tuning?
Can this tuning be done on a nylon string Classical??
String Gauges?
is that a yamaha compass guitar?
Any recommendable gauges for this?
There you BEAT Tony MaCalpine :)
This is COOL Frank Gambale
THANKS :)
it's not the fifth above the normal tuning actually it's fourth above. E to A you see.
Barış Ertürk Yes, 4th above, 5th below. :) I had all kinds of fun trying to get guitar students to understand that.
I have a question Frank. Why tune to A? Doesn't that pull the tension on the neck? Even with the high E & B strings an octave lower it seems like its about to pull everything up. Would tuning to G be slightly less tense?
sorry to reply for Frank, but if I may be so bold, the tension is the same, he is using the "A" string on top, tuned to "A".
well, at least that is how I took it.....
How does one go about choosing gauges for the strings? I did this with a Strat copy, carefully picking gauges that I thought were appropriate for the note I intended to tune it to, and the intonation is awful at the first few frets (yes I have adjusted intonation at the bridge).
And what is specifically meant by "light gauge set" and "extra light gauge set"? D'Addario must make 50 different combinations of gauges sold as sets...
Fretlessman Frank uses the following for electric guitar
1st string 0.17 ( G string from Extra Light gauge standard set tuned up a whole step to A )
2nd string 0.24 ( D string from Extra Light gauge standard set tuned up a whole step to E )
3rd string 0.13 ( B string from Light gauge standard set tuned up a half step to C )
4th string 0.17 ( G string from Light gauge standard set tuned to G)
5th string 0.26 ( D string from Light gauge standard set tuned to D)
6th string 0.36 ( A string from Light gauge standard set tuned to A)
Hope this helps.
