Believe it or not, Frank's family lived over the road from us in Aranda, Canberra, Australia. His bro' Nunzio was in my class at school; we were mates. I still remember with fondness and sheer bloody amazement, Nunz saying come over and have a listen to what Frank's doing now. He was 6 years old and played the Dead's 'Dark Star' with perfection. No surprises he's a global guitar alien; and god bless him that he nurtured the incredible gift he was born with.
that is pretty goddamn rippin...he's like, "I practiced this shit a long ass time, is why I'm so good...now go home and practice motherfucker...!!" is the vibe I'm getting from this..I fuckin love it
Vital Information at the IMAC theater in Huntington ... late 90s ... dont remember during which tune, but they did an extended blues solo section and Frank was literally making me feel like I was levitating out of my seat. It was unbelievable.
Frank is one of the greatest technicians to ever take up the instrument..yet such a nice, genuinely humble guy…that as much as anything makes him an inspiration…just awesome
This guy made sweep-picking an artform the same way Allan Holdsworth made legato an artform. I feel lucky that I shared this planet with people like this, for a little while.
That was ridiculous! What a legend. But more importantly, he doesn't lose the emotion, dynamics, or inflections, for the more bluesy parts. I need to practice more lol
The notes just flow from his body into the guitar. Even as a drummer I can really appreciate his musical talent just incredible. Thanks RB, this dude is a Legend
Met Frank at a guitar workshop at St Charles guitar exchange near st Louis ,what a humble legend he talked with us well after it was over ,he blew everyone's mind with his playing
I bet every guitarist saw that blues solo's and thought "Damn! How many great blues guitarists just dropped their jaws?" LOL Amazing playing! Saw him in lIsbon, on a masterclass sponsored by Ibanez and What I learned in about 1 and a half hours was priceless. Thank you, Mr Frank, and Thank you Rick for your video that reminded me that!
Love Frank. I met him at one of his many clinics, over the years. I worked at a music store in about 89 or 90 and we hosted a clinic, with Frank. He is an amazing player, and quite a personality. Thanks, Rick.
Oh hell yeah.... Thats is something heard from a true legend level guitarist. The thought of getting beyond our physical limitations.. A beast to be tamed. Genius.
"People say I should grimace more" LMAO!!!!!!!!!😆 Seriously, Frank's musicianship and versatility are second to none. And the sheer joy he plays with is contagious! BRAVO!
Frank Gambale is one of my favorite guitarists. I saw him in concert with Vital Information ( Tom Coster, Steve Smith and Baron Browne) and it was really revelatory. Check out Vital Information recordings particularly the double live album ( Tours around the World). A true masterpiece.
I bought one of Franks instructional video's way back, learned a lot. When people talk underrated guitarists Frank is in that category too. He is right about the blues, something I don't think I have ever seen him play but he clearly respects.
Frank continues and will continue to inspire the guitarists of history to be basically more "musical" to make music! It has a warmth and a great spirit, every time I listen to it, I have to run out to look for my guitar and it makes the inspiration flow, a total genius!
What an absolute beast, man knows his stuff inside out and plays with both chops and feel that come only from life. Mediocre player and haven't touched a bass in years but proud of myself for playing that entire set of blues turnarounds in my head without getting lost 😂
In addition, his video on modes is an eye-opening must have. Probably one of the simplest one on the subject, thus a revelation for the curious viewer.
Frank has been a huge influence on me. I first heard his playing on a Chick Corea record when I was eleven years old. I'd just starting playing and his style was so clean and musical. It blew my mind.
Frank is just something else and one the most unpredictable and exciting players still after all these years!!! I’ve never seen anyone else’s hands move like his, incredible!!!🙌🏽🤯🔥
At 5:07 - 5:10 lick? I’ve seen frank play this lick in full on another video. I have NO idea if it’s from one of his songs. I’ve searched through franks guitar tutorials, and tutorials from guys playing frank gambale licks. Nobody plays this lick, I’m aware of. Starting with up stroke sweep high to low. Sick
I had the honor of meeting Frank at Club Iridium in NYC (maybe about 15 years ago). I have met a fair number of musicians in my life and Frank, by far, was the nicest, most humble gentleman I ever met.
It’s been about 34 years since I first heard Frank’s solo to Please Don’t Feel Bad on the Vital Information, and I’m so close to being able to play it all the way through. The way he plays over chord changes is technically masterful but also musical. His playing on that solo is my favorite, but I also love his funk rhythm playing on Sunday Afternoon.
I have a book with various arpeggio licks from monster players. Gambale's section is one of the most eye-opening. So much leading with upstrokes and sweeping with an upward pick slant, totally alien to me but it's getting more fluid. To me having that facility of leading with downstrokes/DWPS and comfortably switching to UWPS feels similar in concept to comfortably switching between drum patterns leading with the right or left hand.
Ever since I heard a bootleg of him and Kai Akagi, I had to get speedpicking. I remember how sloppy my sixteenth were at 120. Now I just love my slop. Thank Frank, you are one of the best.
I was lucky enough to see him live a few years ago, in his mature stage, and it was a pleasure to see how the craft of years gives him enough freedom to play what he wants, and how he wants; It's not just about going fast, it's about playing it musically. Quietness and pauses are just as important as quick notes.
Music is truly the universal language. From Franks playing to Ricks total understanding of theory it was like a conversation was going on back and forward that didn’t even need words. Excellent content. 👍
Even though I was at G.I.T in 80s (when Frank was a teacher there) and was lucky enough to watch Frank every week up close (I started economy/speed picking and sweeping because of him) over time I still need to be occasionally reminded how truly amazing he is thanks for posting : )
So glad that the insipid third finger quick slide up and back on one fret has not crept into Frank's playing. But Frank is way beyond jumping onto the latest cliches, what a blend of musician and guitar player.
Al igual que Eddie Van halen, Frank se mueve en el mástil de arriba a abajo sin esfuerzos, pareciendo hacerlo sin el más mínimo esfuerzo. Talento de virtuosos🎸
Frank playing blues, what a revelation. For anyone lucky enough to have his album, 'Coming To Your Senses', there's a wonderful piece 'Up in Beechwood' that emphasises his really soulful touch.
What a gift 👍
Pro audio 🤭🤫
I always say playing NICE is a thing about talent.
Thanks for this. Could you please tell us something story more ?
Espectacular!
5:00 "I can play as fast as I want" - that's some end of level boss talk. And then he does it. Legend.
'It ain't bragging if you can back it up' - Jaco Pastorius.
You know your ego is healthy when it makes others smile.
After he made that remark he played the most meta human lick
that is pretty goddamn rippin...he's like, "I practiced this shit a long ass time, is why I'm so good...now go home and practice motherfucker...!!" is the vibe I'm getting from this..I fuckin love it
I found that quote really helpful and made some progress with my speed 👍😎
A guy that's honed his craft to perfection. He makes it look easy, because it IS easy...for him.
Frank's an icon!
I've known Gambale for 35 years, and I had never heard him play the blues. What a joy.
"Blue Miles" is my favorite blues tune. Check out Frank and the rest of Chick's Elektric Band playing it live. Great stuff!
I know Jesus... Clown
Frank's awesome at blues and I didn't realise. Such soul and feel.
Vital Information at the IMAC theater in Huntington ... late 90s ... dont remember during which tune, but they did an extended blues solo section and Frank was literally making me feel like I was levitating out of my seat. It was unbelievable.
@@DanielVerberne FG's first 10 years of guitar was all Blues. John Mayall he especially liked in the 60s growing up.
Frank is one of the greatest technicians to ever take up the instrument..yet such a nice, genuinely humble guy…that as much as anything makes him an inspiration…just awesome
So many of the greats are(were), i think it's no small part of what's required to achieve true mastery.
The way he scrambles up blues patterns with genius inversions, reminds me of no one so much as Scott Henderson. Brilliant.
This guy made sweep-picking an artform the same way Allan Holdsworth made legato an artform. I feel lucky that I shared this planet with people like this, for a little while.
And they make one album together
I was just thinking about early Van Halen and his infatuation with Holdsworth… Similar modal-style Virtuoso influence.
And they been playing the same brand guitar. Just two months before Allan passed away I met both of them at NAMM. 🙏🏻❤️🎸
...share...
What an amazing comment.
The guy doesn't even need harmonies in the background, the sound is already there! 👏💪🤘
That was ridiculous! What a legend. But more importantly, he doesn't lose the emotion, dynamics, or inflections, for the more bluesy parts. I need to practice more lol
Frank is the benchmark for musical knowledge and technical finesse that all guitarists should aim at achieving.
Not really, he's way passed the benchmark
@@dennoowhe pushed the benchmark past everyone else LOL.
Yeah his tutorial videos are400 500 dolar like he is the only teacher😂😂
Frank is INCREDIBLE. I could listen to him all day. What a creative musician.
FRANK is the Best! The thunder from down under, have gotten to see him live a few times. This interview is awesome! Thanks for your content Rick.
I love how he just can't resist going off the deep end for a little bit just playing blues and then reels it back in again. Top notch!
The notes just flow from his body into the guitar. Even as a drummer I can really appreciate his musical talent just incredible. Thanks RB, this dude is a Legend
Frank Gambale is a guitar god - he is a fantastic artist and has it
I love when Frank plays the blues. Wish he would do more of it.
All these years I've been digging Frank.... and he stills does it. A gift for us.
Frank has a very smooth & FAST style of playing the guitar 🎸 & one of the best I’ve ever seen ! 👍🏻
Frank Gambale is a virtuoso guitar player, no doubt about it. Hardly ever heard him play Blues and he sounds great here, too!!
Met Frank at a guitar workshop at St Charles guitar exchange near st Louis ,what a humble legend he talked with us well after it was over ,he blew everyone's mind with his playing
Holy crap! That is simply amazing. Regardless of the speed or technique it is so soulful!

This guy has always been one of my favourites. Very humble man as well.
The coordination between his left and right hand is insane.

Sir Beato, please make more video with mr. Gambale. Thanks 🙏🙏
Frank Gambale is one of my favorite guitarists. I saw him in concert with Vital Information ( Tom Coster, Steve Smith and Baron Browne) and it was really revelatory. Check out Vital Information recordings particularly the double live album ( Tours around the World). A true masterpiece.
This man knows his voice leading, it's so evident in how with no backing you hear the changes in that solo.
A guy who can play his part and your brain fills in the rest of the band because he created it. Very special
I bought one of Franks instructional video's way back, learned a lot. When people talk underrated guitarists Frank is in that category too. He is right about the blues, something I don't think I have ever seen him play but he clearly respects.
Wow! Never seen anything like that. He just let's it flow! One of the greatest guitarist ever!
no more comment about one of the best guitarist+one of the best gtr teacher ever exists on this planet, but, frank gambale is extremely amazing
I met him at Brecon Jazz many years ago with Vital Information. Lovely guy to chat with and an incredible musician.
Frank continues and will continue to inspire the guitarists of history to be basically more "musical" to make music! It has a warmth and a great spirit, every time I listen to it, I have to run out to look for my guitar and it makes the inspiration flow, a total genius!

Love Frank, one of the all time best! One of the ultimate personalities on guitar. You always know it's FG when you hear him.
His playing with Chicks Electrik band was an eye opener for me as a kid….MONSTER
In addition, his video on modes is an eye-opening must have. Probably one of the simplest one on the subject, thus a revelation for the curious viewer.

Anyone else just smiling and occassionally laughing at his shear talent ❤🤟
Yup
He is clean and precise
"Sheer", sorry :)
@DanielVerberne sorry. I'm gonna blame auto correct 😉
Smiling while SMH
That was just simply outstanding.
His sweep rythm is world class, dynamics are clean as hell as well, very nice.
Wow! King of fusion shred. Thanks for sharing Mr Beato.
Frank is amazing indeed!
Frank is just something else and one the most unpredictable and exciting players still after all these years!!! I’ve never seen anyone else’s hands move like his, incredible!!!🙌🏽🤯🔥
The flame on that top is something to behold ,,,

Probably the most musicality I have have ever seek Frank play in my life. He should play blues more often!
It’s been about 34 years since I first heard Frank’s solo to Please Don’t Feel Bad on the Vital Information, and I’m so close to being able to play it all the way through.

2:50 starts where most people mentally melt down and beat themselves with their own guitar! Frank is tooooo funny!!!!
Man, I was fortunate to have seen him play with Chick's Electric band back '86 when I was in College. Always been one of my favorite guitarists.
Just insane notes selection in the played phrases..not possible not to love it...
He is simply incredible. How I wish I could know exactly what notes I can play over any chord, and play them with even one quarter of his fluidity...

Frank has ALWAYS amazed me!!! Licks and TONE!!!
Rick is so happy in this video! Definitely the look of a guy meeting one of his guitar heroes.
Ever since I heard a bootleg of him and Kai Akagi, I had to get speedpicking. I remember how sloppy my sixteenth were at 120. Now I just love my slop. Thank Frank, you are one of the best.
Blues gets you beyond notes, scales, arrppegios you can find that soul and speak your heart.
'The string is a beast' well put and agreed. Amazing guitarist.
"this is a beast...to overcome"
He love’s throwing those 1/2 step up chromatic runs in the mix with blues giving an instant jazz feel…love that trick using it a lot
I was lucky enough to see him live a few years ago, in his mature stage, and it was a pleasure to see how the craft of years gives him enough freedom to play what he wants, and how he wants; It's not just about going fast, it's about playing it musically.

I love it when somebody can show you notes you didn't even know were there.
Holy fuck crazy to see you two on the same screen! Frank is a god.
Music is truly the universal language. From Franks playing to Ricks total understanding of theory it was like a conversation was going on back and forward that didn’t even need words. Excellent content. 👍
Wow! Amazing!!
It's not so much how difficult it is, but how amazing it is. FG never ceases to blow my mind.
Gosh I owe Frank so much since I started my journey! Thanx guys! ❤️
Frank Gambale is truly a treasure.
Even though I was at G.I.T in 80s (when Frank was a teacher there) and was lucky enough to watch Frank every week up close (I started economy/speed picking and sweeping because of him) over time I still need to be occasionally reminded how truly amazing he is thanks for posting : )
Rick, this was just killer!
The music world is way better when you come across an excellent Frank Cambale video!!!
Saw this guy play live with Return To Forever. Excellent!!!
This channel is a real fun one, Rick. Very cool segments. Keep 'em coming!
It’s crazy how smooth he is
Thanks Rick for this awesome content. Cant get enough of Gambale , and you ask him the questions ive always wondered about.
Just fabulous....wow listened to him for years...
So glad that the insipid third finger quick slide up and back on one fret has not crept into Frank's playing. But Frank is way beyond jumping onto the latest cliches, what a blend of musician and guitar player.
Frank is the best of the friggin' best😁
Always amazing !
Frank's always fantastic! Saw him with RTF4, Dweezil Zappa's band and Jean-luc Ponty, a few years ago, just incredible!
Such an incredible jazzer!
Guauuu! Qué maravilloso guitarrista es Frank, talento y feeling al interpretar. Gracias Rick por compartir. Saludos a ambos 👍🏿🇲🇽
The master FG!! "The living legend"!!🙏
I love the recognisable warmth of Frank's tone.
Frank is the only guitarist i can listen to all day everyday no problem.
Amazing. I don't think anybody has more control over the guitar than Frank G.
Fantastic. Frank is marvellous.
awesome touch !
Rick, you're sitting with the best of the best lately. What a great show it's become! Will you sit with Greg Howe one day, please?
Frank playing blues, what a revelation. For anyone lucky enough to have his album, 'Coming To Your Senses', there's a wonderful piece 'Up in Beechwood' that emphasises his really soulful touch.
“I can play as fast as I want”. It’s not even cocky coming from him…
Bcoz it's a f***ng true
I know! That’s why I find it funny, it’s just matter of fact
Love musicians who always play a melody even when practicing. You can hear the key changes in his solos.
"I'm not warmed up yet..." plays an amazing lick.
Love his mixes scales and sweep picking technnics !!!
His modes tutorial are the vest ive seen to date. Great teacher.
